ENASIANS will now have the option of going to a public clinic, to private doctors, or the newly launched Lenasia Health Care.

The much anticipated Lenasia Health Care, situated at 74 Gemsbok Street, in Lenasia Ext 1, was officially launched on February 4.

Members of the community agreed that it will ease the burden on public clinics.

A doctor and dedicated staff members will be available seven days a week to take care of the public.

This is one of the milestone achievements in the area.

The idea of the clinic was mooted by two gentlemen, Paul Reddy and Zuned Shaik.

In 2016, Zunaid Shaik was walking in the same street where the centre is today, when he came across a senior citizen who looked depressed.

He asked her what was wrong with her, and she told him she was returning home after visiting the doctor, who she said, couldn’t help her because she couldn’t afford the consulation fee, which was a bit more than the money she had.

Shaik said his heart was broken, and he told himself that he had to do something about the situation.

Paul Reddy said a project of this nature was a culmination of hard work.

He said the project was not about the money, but to give back to the community.

“We have tried our best to get more doctors on a volunteer basis. However, we received negative feedback. We approached many doctors but no one was willing to come on board. We, however, are still calling on doctors to join in and take this project forward, for the benefit of the community,”

said Mr Reddy. At the moment the centre has one

full time doctor. However, the directors have bigger plans for the centre.

Juwairiya Shaik said, “My father always envisioned helping the Lenasia community at large, and after much hard work, tiresome days and support, we are all finally here. At this clinic we aim to provide the best and most affordable health care. Together we can uplift the community.”

Patients will pay a maximum of R200 for consultation and basic medications, something which was commended by the public.

The directors also conveyed their gratitude to the donors and all volunteers for making the centre a reality. For more informa-tion contact Paul Reddy on 082 341 1257 or Zuned Shaik on084 786 0292.

ON February 1, two women, believed to be in their 20s, were seriously injured when their light motor vehicle rammed into a streetlight on theR42 Barrage Road in Vanderbijlpark.

ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, said, “Our

paramedics attended to the incident at 03h25. A light motor vehicle was stationary on the centre median. One woman was seated inside the vehicle while the second woman was found near the vehicle. Parammedics assessed

ON January 28, the Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Cllr Geoff Makhubo, Memberof the Mayoral Committee Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhuba, and the Johannesburg Roads Agency launched the city's “War on Potholes” campaign.

The 60 day action plan started on January 28, and will be completed by March 28, if conditions allow.

The current status of the city’s road network is very poor.

This can be attributed to various factors such as age, traffic growth, poor drainage, and the intense rainfall experienced in the past months. The campaign is aimed at addressing the pothole repair backlog in the city.

The executive mayor said that the “War on Potholes” would take place throughout the regions.

“The city belongs to everyone who dwells in it and as a result, this is a joint effort incorporating the JRA, the Citizen Relationship Urban Management, urban inspectors and local communities. Without the involvement of our communities it will not be easy to achieve much, thus we believe in active citizenry,”said Mayor Makhubo

WHILE it is true that learning new things can be a burden on those that embark on this quest, one does not have to break their back to gain an excellent education. Given the recent medical problems arising from children lugging around heavy schoolbags in order to be prepared for each class, Park Primary has adopted a novel way to lessen the burden on the body while strengthening the mind.

The school has purchased textbooks for each class in every subject so that their learners need not have to carry heavy textbooks back and forth.

Park Primary’s principal Mr Khan said that, “The school has been doing this for years.” He added that, “Even in particular subjects where there are more than one textbook that is used, the school has taken the expenses on themselves to ensure teachers have all the relevant learning material so that the textbook given to the child can be left at home to complete their homework.”Mr Khan has further stressed that, “This information was relayed to parents during the school’s

orientation week.” He thus encourages parents to attend such meetings, which are especially beneficial for the health of their children.

To date, a number of schools have adopted this same strategy. However, there are still many school children still shuffling around trying to fit all the relevant textbooks in an oversized bag.

This is while Park Primary leads the way for excellent solutions to back-breaking problems, thus ensuring that this school remains at for forefront of primary education in Lenasia.

“I felt like a kid with no bur-den out there.”

Temba Bavuma certainly backed up those words with a serene,

match-winning 98 in the Proteas’ seven-wicket victory over England at Newlands on Tuesday, Feburary 4.

The diminutive right-hander was an outstanding foil for skipper Quinton de Kock, with whom he shared a record 173-run second wicket partnership.

Yet even though Bavuma looked at ease, he admitted the past month has been difficult for him after an injury and then being dropped for the Test series, which led to an explosion of debate over race and transformation in local cricket.

“Yes, I am black, that’s my skin. But I play cricket because I love it. I’d like to think the reason I am in the team is because of performances I have put forward in my franchise side, and also for the national team, when-ever I have been able to,” he said.

“It has been hard. It’s not so much the dropping part, all players get dropped, everyone goes through slumps of not scoring well. The awkwardness and uncomfortability from my side is when you are thrown into talks of transformation.”

Indeed, Bavuma feels that the debate over transformation in South African cricket remains skewed.

“The one thing that irks me is when you are seen through the eyes of transformation,” he said.

“When you do well, transformation is not spoken about but when you do badly, transformation is thrown at the top of the agenda. I have a serious problem with that. We’ve got to be able to take the good with the bad. If transforma-tion is bad when black African play-ers are not doing well, then when we are doing well, let’s also recognise transformation for what it’s done.”

While he played himself back into the South African side by making a career-best 180 for the Highveld Lions a few weeks back, Bavuma also cred-ited the influence of national bat-ting consultant Jacques Kallis.

“Jacques has been hands-on with most of the batters. He has been very open to sharing his knowledge and his expertise in batting. It’s been a breath of fresh air working with him. Technically, there’s no-one who knows better than him. It’s been wonderful working with him.”
