Linda

Do you know that if you forget to pick up your gun bag at the range, you may be confronted by the president? I understand that she is pretty scary. It may be that we will require some kind of fine in the future. Maybe a donation to her “Joy” drive.

Anyway, November is here and the days are shorter. I’m sure we are looking forward to seeing the end of 2020. We hope to see some sort of normalcy in the near future.

We are starting to open most events, members and invited guests only still. Unfortunately no junior events yet. Maybe soon.

On a brighter note, we are enjoying good weather which makes it easier to hold our meetings outside. If you don’t see us in the clubhouse, look on the trap range. Where there is a will, there is a way. And we will work out the way.

We are collecting toys, gift cards, money and diapers for Camp Pendelton. The “Joy” drive is ongoing and you can donate until December 10th. We will have a Joy caravan again this year. The Chaplain’s office is excited about our donations so be generous. Our servicemen and servicewomen do so much for us and we try to do a little something to say thank you.

Please have a safe and happy thanksgiving. See you soon.

I Election Day (11/3/2020)Every year around Halloween my wife and I sit down and go through the election sample ballot and figure out how we want to vote on not only the big ticket items (President, Congressman, etc…) but also the smaller, less glamorous

items like propositions, measures, city council, and judges. This is a tedious process but I consider it to be a very important discipline. If I don’t research a ballot item and I blindly cast a vote, then I am being negligent with the power of my vote. That is irresponsible and dangerous. I also do not rely on advertising alone to decide how I will vote. I usually go to the web sites for the candidates or propositions (for and against) to get more of the story.

This all sounds like a lot of work, and it is. However, I refuse to squander the power of the legacy that our forefathers fought so hard for. With great power comes great responsibility. The great power of your vote comes with the great responsibility to know what you are doing when you vote.

I would not be arrogant enough to tell you how to vote but I do want to passionately implore you all to participate in our Constitutional Republic and make your voice heard at the ballot box. Remember that the wrong people are elected when the right people don’t bother to vote.

I Make Time to Attend a General MeetingAt the last General Meeting, the new Board of Directors were sworn into office. Once again we had a pleasant outdoor meeting with social distancing and a raffle after the meeting. We are working on a plan for the November meeting that will combine comfort with COVID compliance so it should be very interesting. Be there or be square!

I Be a Raffle DonorYour donations help support our monthly General Meeting Raffle. Our entertainment Chairman is Bud Smith. If you have items you would like to donate to our monthly General meeting raffle, please contact Smoldering Bud at [email protected]. Please consider new or used items in working order. Thanks for your support.

I Members & IGMany of our events are now open to Members and Invited Guests. This means that any non-member that wants to participate in an event that is in [Members & IG] status will need to have an EF&GA Member sponsor their admission to the event. Just like Casual Shooting, there is a limit of two (2) invited guests per EF&GA Member. Also like Casual Shooting, the EF&GA Member is responsible for his/her Invited Guest(s)

including getting them through the gate. If you plan to sponsor a guest or two, please help your event Shoot Chair by emailing him/her the name(s) of your Invited Guest(s) so that the Shoot Chair will have an idea of how many total participants will be at the event. This information will help the event run more smoothly.

I Change in CultureThe State of California is forcing us to change how we operate again. We are moving to a ‘Pack-Your-Trash’ model where you will be required to take home any waste that could be contaminated by heavy metals (lead, copper, antimony, zinc, and a bunch of others like Beryllium, Molybdenum and some others that probably don’t apply). Even though we are a private Association, we are classified as a commercial range. This means that we need to follow new restrictions from the State of California or face heavy fines, penalties, and even closure.

If you know people who work in construction, they can tell you horror stories about having a construction site shut down by a County inspector because pressure-treated lumber scraps have been dropped in a dumpster instead of being sent out in a special hazmat container. Commercial ranges are now subject to similar inspections and penalties. Conversely, if you dispose of your range waste in your residential trash or recycling at home, this is not an issue for pressure-treated lumber or range waste. What is considered Range Waste? According to the County of San Diego, any refuse that could be contaminated by heavy metals is range waste that could be in violation. The examples that the County gave were used cleaning wipes, used targets, empty shotgun hulls, etc. There is a specific exemption for scrap metal recycling so we are in compliance as long as we maintain documentation of lead and brass that is sold to scrap metal recyclers. This exemption is only for scrap metals. Plastic (shotgun hulls) and paper (targets) are not part of the exemption for a commercial range.

I Health Monitors NeededIf you need volunteer hours, you can fulfill part or all of your time by serving EF&GA as a Health Monitor. We can train you quickly and you will not need to lift anything heavier than an electronic thermometer. If you want to volunteer, contact the shoot chair for the event that you want to help out. Contact information for the Shoot Chairs is available in any newsletter or the web site. This is a necessary job that lightens the burdens of the Shoot Chairs and makes the events possible. So, the job is very much appreciated by all in attendance.

I 2020 Scholarship Award WinnersCongratulations to this year’s four EF&GA Scholarship Award recipients: Justin Rader Austin Ellerby Christopher Alessio Drianna Brinkmeier

I Protest Planned (11/29/2020)Because COVID-19 does not spread at peaceful protests, we are having a protest against messy ranges. We plan to eradicate messes and vegetation waste that could become brushfire fuel using ‘shovels, rakes, and implements of destruction’ (Arlo Guthrie references are important around Thanksgiving.) There are many tasks that need to be done and all that you need to bring is yourself. If you want to bring more protesters, everyone is welcome to participate. Just to be safe, we will continue to practice social distancing and/or wearing of masks to properly comply with the COVID protocols of San Diego County. Lunchis always great at these events and the no-cost raffle after lunch has been a long-standing tradition that is alwaysgreat fun. If you need volunteer hours, this is a perfect opportunity get it done in cooler weather.

I National Bison Day (11/7/2020)You see them everywhere — on coins, on sports team logos, and a couple of state flags. No, we’re not talking aboutthe bald eagle. This honor is reserved for North American bison. On National Bison Day, an annual event that falls on the first Saturday in November, all Americans should reflect on the impact bison have as a part of our environmentaland cultural heritage. The purpose of National Bison Dayis to encourage celebration of the American Bison, also commonly known as the American buffalo.

If you want to learn more about the American Bison, spend some quality time with Ray Bucholz. I would be willing to bet a buffalo nickel that he would happily give you plenty of history, trivia, and general information about the Bison and how it has impacted American culture. He might put you to work tending to our roses but you will definitely be enriched by the experience.

TRAP CORNERWednesday Night LightsThe lights are back on Wednesday nights at Escondido Fish and Game. We opened for two nights in October as a trial run to get our team up and running. Now were ready for Members and Invited Guests! We still need a few more volunteers. So, if you need to work off some volunteer hours or just want to help out please give me a call or text (858-204-4705). I’m excited and impressed with the amount of enthusiasm and cooperation we have had in getting Wednesday Trap operational. I have a million people to thank! Our goal is to make Wednesday nights a Safe and Fun time for the entire family. You will see some familiar friendly faces and we’re looking forward to seeing you’re your friendly faces again. In November we will have Trap, Trap doubles and a 5-Stand course set up on the 4th and the 18th. On the 11th and the 25th, in addition to Trap and Doubles we will have something a little different. On Trap Field 3 we’re going to have Shotgun Games available including Buddy Shoots, Chip Shoots, and Annie Oakleys with prizes awarded to the winners. Break out the shotguns, and load everyone up in the family bus and head to the range for a little Covid-19 relief in November. I’m Dan Dorman for Escondido Fish and Game, and we’ll leave the lights on for you!

Turkey Shoot (11/21/2020)No, we do not encourage people to shoot at live turkeys on our range, the turkeys are frozen. It’s not easy getting them to fit in the target launching machines, but it’s worth it. Actually, we shoot regular Trap with a twist. There are 10 people on the line and the top score (out of 10 clay targets) wins a frozen turkey. If there is a tie, then there is a shoot-off for the bird. Second place wins a box of stuffing or some cranberry sauce. This annual event is always a lot of great family friendly fun. The shoot will take place starting at 8:00 AM and will continue until the turkeys are all gone. Compete to win a frozen turkey or stuffing from 3 different disciplines – 16-yard trap, 20-yard wobble, and 25-yard handicap. Tickets are $5 per round or 5 tickets for $20.

This year there will also be a lunch available for $10 that includes soup and a sandwich with the proceeds going to the Holiday Joy Drive to benefit families of our military serving on Camp Pendleton.

Winter Saturday Schedule for Trap Because the sun sets earlier and the weather is colder at night, we are going to change Saturday Trap to begin at 2:00 instead of 4:00 PM. This will only be until Daylight Saving Time returns (3/14/2021). The good news is that we all get to shoot while it is still warm. Under this schedule, the Punch Card Shoot and the Century Shoot will be suspended. This will NOT affect the Pot Shoot, only 16-Yard Trap.

Pack Your HullsBecause the State of California changed the rules again, we need to change how we handle any waste materials at the Range. We are moving to a ‘pack-your-trash’ model where you will be required to take your used hulls home with you rather than leaving them in the buckets or trash cans. Used hulls consist of plastic and mostly steel so you should be able to dispose of them them in your home recycling but we cannot put them in our commercial recycling at the Range because they contain minute amounts of lead, zinc, antimony, or copper. According to the State of California, you cannot dispose of this type of waste in a commercial environment. Residential waste has a different set of rules.

Practicing good gun range safety etiquette isn’t just good manners—it’s

good sense! Gun range etiquette is a blend of common sense, courtesy, and safety.

It’s important, though, to learn proper gun range safety before you step foot in the facility. It’s easy to spot shooters who are under-educated about safe and considerate practices. They’re often disruptive, risky to be near and can cause a lot of stress for others using the range.

Not only will learning gun safety etiquette prevent you from looking out of place, but it will also keep you and everyone else safe. With knowledge of the right precautions and procedures, you’ll earn the respect of others and feel more confident during your practice.

There are a few universal etiquette rules every shooter should follow:

• Direction: Regardless of whether or not your firearm is loaded, you should always keep the muzzle pointed downrange. If you need to place the gun down on your bench, it should be unloaded and facing the targets. Once you are ready to start shooting, only direct the muzzle at items you intend to hit. • Surroundings: Always be aware of your surroundings. You should pay attention to your actions and the actions of other shooters on the range. If someone calls for a cease-fire, you need to be able to hear it. Also, know your target and what’s beyond it. Even if your range has a reliable backstop in place, it’s good practice to gain a clear understanding of your surroundings, especially when shooting at outdoor targets.

• Intention: When you’re in between rounds, your finger should be OFF the trigger until you intend to shoot. This may be one of the best ways to prevent mistakes. If you keep your finger out of the trigger guard, there’s much less of a chance of an accidental discharge. • Treatment: As a base rule, treat every firearm as if it is loaded at all times. Even if you’ve double checked the chamber, it’s best to continue handling it with the same regard you would a loaded firearm. Not only will it help you form good habits, but it will also ensure you never make the wrong assumption accidentally.

Even those with years of experience can get overly comfortable and make a misstep now and again. That doesn’t mean it’s acceptable behavior or that you should be negligent when it comes to following accepted practices. You should make it a routine to be a representative of good conduct.

Remember, safety is everyone’s job. You are responsible for your own safety, the safety of others and for the behavior of your guests. If you see that someone else isn’t following the rules, you should report the situations soon as possible to the proper range or club officials.

Common courtesies will get you far at the range. Just as you should anywhere else, be sure to clean up after yourself when you’ve finished using a facility. Pick up any brass, ammo boxes, target frames or miscellaneous trash before leaving the range.

Spam Phone Calls: If, like me, you have been getting a metric ton of “Political Survey” calls on your home phone at all hours of the day or night, try this. Tell them you’re a professional You Tube “Influencer”. Tell them you charge $250/hr for the first hour, and $200/hr for every hour, or fraction there of, thereafter. Ask them how they would like to pay for that. While they sputter an answer, set the phone down and walk off. Congratulations. You just tied up a Spam caller for several minutes, cut down their productivity, and made their job harder. Considering the current divisive political climate in the US, I would vote for any political party that would make Spam calling a capital crime.

Covid-19 Update: We are still operating under Covid restrictions as published in the July Newsletter. Tables are separated under the ramada, and the firing line is moved 8 yards forward outside of the ramada, etc. These rules have been amended to allow Invited Guests to shoot the contest with you. Up to 2 guests per member are allowed. They will be your responsibility to admit to the range, and your responsibility to monitor during the contest. Masks are required inside of the control zone, (150 ramada). Masks may be removed to make your shot from the firing line, and then immediately placed back on your face.

Next ML Silhouette Contest: Is scheduled for Nov 22nd, This will be a Super Short Range contest with targets at 25, 50, and 75 yds. (Note: No Pistol reloading tables for this one. Load at your assigned bench)

November is National Bison Month: If you enter this contest, you get a ticket. A Grand Prize worth an estimated $500 will be awarded by a blind drawing of all contest entrants. Ray will not say what the prize is going to be, so you will need to show up to find out. Ray is also working on special event shoot to follow the regular match. Bring a stapler...

Next BullsEye Contest: The November Rile Fest will run on Nov 1st. This will start with a 150 yd Benchrest contest for Muzzle Loaders, firing a patched round ball only. No conical projectiles allowed. You get 13 shots and your best 10 count. Following the Benchrest event we will start the Seneca Run. Start under the 150 ramada and run to the first firing line. Shoot, run back to an orange cone and then back to the next firing line for the next target. After firing at multiple steel silhouettes, you need to “stick” a Tomahawk and run back to the house. Lowest time wins, and there is a penalty for missing targets. Referred to as the “Shuffle, Stumble,

How to place a classified ad in the newsletter Please help to keep the classified section easy to read and well organized. There is no cost as long as you are an EF&GA member in good standing. Classified ads run for ONE newsletter (one month). If you want to repeat an ad for another month (with price adjustments, etc…) simply re-submit the ad request via e-mail.

Please submit requests for classified ads via email to [email protected] and be sure to double-check for spelling and grammar errors.

Members Only are allowed to submit Classified advertisements. Your Membership Number must be included with any advertisement request so that we can properly vet the submission before it is published. The Membership Number will NOT appear in the advertisement. Your Membership Number is on your membership badge on the same side as your photo.

No Illegal Transactions may be advertised in this newsletter. It is now illegal to sell ammunition in California without either going through an FFL or a licensed ammunition reseller. EF&GA cannot facilitate any illegal commerce of a state regulated commodity. This is also why firearm sales should include a phrase similar to Buyer pays DROS when advertising the sale of a firearm.

It may sound obvious but requests for classifieds are frequently received with not enough information to be useful to a reader. There are 5 main components of a classified ad:

Category – Most classifieds fall into one of 3 categories, ‘For Sale’, ‘Wanted’, or ‘Lost & Found’.

Subject/Title – This will appear in bold in the advertisement. This should be short (2 or 3 words) and concise.

Description – This is the body of the advertisement and can be a few sentences but not more than a paragraph. Abbreviations appear cryptic and are not recommended unless they are well known acronyms.

Price – A specific dollar amount as well as qualifiers give the reader important information. For example, “$600 or Best Offer, Buyer pays DROS, Will consider trades”

Contact Info – This should be a name AND a phone number (including area code) and/or an e-mail address.

JUNIOR CORNERby Patrick Russ

About five years ago, Darrin Eaton and I were trying to figure out different ways to make some money for the Junior Marksmanship Program. We tried collecting brass and that has brought in a few hundred dollars every year, but we knew that we could do better. We knew that the backstop on the pistol range was full of lead and that the lead needed to be cleaned up for many reasons. So, we started a lead remediation program to clean up the hillside. It started small but after a few years and the help of Dave Robertson, we were able to clean up the hillside. In the process we also created a big hole in the backstop, we also unearthed some huge rocks that need to be covered for safety reasons. So, we decided that the hillside needed to be fixed. We started off by filling over 1500 sandbags and we purchased over 100 cubic yards of decomposed granite (DG). We laid in rows of sandbags to help support the hillside until the DG gets settled in. Then on October 11th, we were able to lay in the re-maining sandbags and move the DG up on the hill. I am happy to say that it worked better than planned. Not only were we able to fill in the hole but we were able to bring the hillside out enough to line up with the rest of the ranges. I believe that this makes the range look that much better.

This was a huge project. Many people got their hands dirty with this project but none more than Chris and Austin Cote. As many of you know, Chris is a newly re-elected member of the Board of Directors at the Escondido Fish and Game Association. Chris has worked tirelessly with this project. He spearheaded the filling of the 1500 sand-bags. He was the first one to step up for the big push to finish the lead mitigation. He worked long, dirty hours to get everything done before winter. This is just one of many projects that Chris is currently working on. I am sure many of you recognize his son Austin Cote. This young man is one of our top Junior Shooters and the Senior Junior Coach. Austin was there during most, if not all the hours that Chris worked, and he was there because he wanted to help.

I would like to thank everyone that helped with this project. In no particular order, Dave Robertson, Rick Baugh, Gary Fukuda, Tim Petrachek, Tim Hoy, Ed Migdal and Darrin Eaton. These guys stepped up in a big way to help the association. These are the guys that make things happen. Thanks Gents!

The Junior Marksmanship program would like to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and safe Thanksgiving. This has been a crazy year, but I know that we all have many things to be thankful for. Don’t forget that we are only allowed to have 6 people over for Thanksgiving, but we can have 30 people over for a funeral. So, I will be having a funeral for my pet turkey that will pass away on Nov.26th. Food and refreshments will be provided. I am sure there will be many turkey funerals going on about the same time.

The Junior Marksmanship Program would also like to wish all our veterans and very Happy Veteran’s Day. This is a day that is set aside to honor and thank all the men and women that have served in the armed services of the United States.

Last, but sure as heck not least, I would like to wish all the Marines out there a very Happy and healthy 245th Birthday. From Marine Corps History website, On Novem-

ber 10th 1775 the Second Continental Congress established the Continen-tal Marines with the decree:That two battalions of Marines be raised consisting of one Colonel, two lieutenant-colonels, two majors and other officers, as usual in other regiments; that they consist of an equal number of privates as with other battalions, that particular care be taken that no persons be appointed to offices, or enlisted into said battalions, but such as are good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve for and during the present war with Great Britain and the Colonies; unless dismissed by Congress; that they be distinguished by the names of the First and Second Battalions of Marines.

This was the start of the greatest fighting force that world had ever known. 245 years later we are still the greatest fighting force the world has ever known. Semper Fidelis, Marines!
