The 2019 Northwest Fly Tier & Fly Fishing ExpoWelcomes
Maxine McCormick & Chris Korich
It is a great honor to welcome 2 World Casting Champions, Maxine McCormick and U.S. Team coach Chris Korich, as our guest speakers at the Banquet on Friday, March 8th at 5pm.
Maxine is a 15-year-old champion and fly fisher, already known worldwide. In 2018, Maxine earned women’s division GOLD medals in 2 separate events and SILVER in another at the WC in England:
GOLDTrout Accuracy - Finals score of 52 points (21 pts ahead of next closest women)Salmon Distance – 2 hand winning cast of 189 feet!
SILVERSea Trout Distance - 1 hand new long cast World Record (in prelim round) of 161 feet!
Maxine also made finals in the popular 5wt Trout Distance event with a long cast of 123 feet!
At only 12 years old (three years ago at the 2016 WC in Estonia), Maxine became the youngest adult division World Champion in sports history, outscoring every women and MAN in Trout accuracy!
Most importantly, Maxine loves being outdoors, camping and fishing with her dad, little brother, cousins and close friends. While she loves dry fly fishing for trout, swinging flies for steelhead and sight casting for bass and bluegill, she really looks forward to getting into salt-water fly-fishing and traveling to new destinations, where she can use her pin-point accuracy and distance skills to the fullest.
Saturday, March 9th - 2 separate fly casting demonstration times!Be sure to attend Maxine’s demos at the Expo casting area by the boats on Saturday at 11:15-11:45 am and again at 1:15-1:45 pm. Then join Maxine and coach Chris Korich immediately after, at exhibit booth #17 for a meet and greet Q&A autograph session.
Come ready with your questions to ‘Learn The Secrets of E-FISH-ent Fly Casters!’

The Oregon Fly FisherthE hArElinE - dubbin StorY
“The Nor-vise history”By Tim O’Neil
TheNor-visewasdevelopedbyprofessionalresearchengineerandfly-tyerNormNorlander.Unsatisfiedwiththe current state of hook-holding in the world of fly tying, Normsetouttodevelopabetter,faster,easiersystem.Fastforward30yearslater,andtheNor-viseistrulyoneofthemost innovative tools in the fly tying industry.
TheNor-viseisdesignedto“spin”thehooktoapplymaterial. With the hook shank held in perfect alignment with the axis of rotation (on centerline or zero axis) this allows us to spin the hook rather than just rotate it, a huge advantagewhentyingafly!“Spinning”thehookshankoncenter provides for better thread tension control and more precise material placement.
Normknewthatspinningthehookwouldprovidesomany advantages over the current method of tying. Think about it…90% of what we do while tying a fly involves wrapping some type of material over the hook shank. Whether you are dubbing, wrapping a lead underbody, windinghackle, orfinishingathreadhead,Norm’sinvention allows us to perform all of these tasks more efficiently. Speaking of dubbing…you should see us dub on theNor-vise!
The second part of our system, and possibly more of a revelationthantheviseitself-istheNor-viseAutomatic
Bobbin. The Automatic Bobbin solves the problem of getting the bobbin out of the way, yet instantly having it right back to where it is needed by winding the slack thread up automatically. The thread on the thread post is in perfect alignment with the hook shank, and from here the vise may be rotated or spun to wrap on materials without adding additional thread to the hook.
Like any new technology it takes a bit of practice to master, but when you do, you will wonder how you ever lived withoutit!TheNor-viseFlyTyingViseandAutomaticBobbinwillindeedhelpyou“TieBetterFliesFaster”.
