Christopher.Wood "Musical air stations" will be the tune for VMFA -235 this month, as the Death Angels prepare to move to NAS Barbers Point and the Western Pacific. Since Kaneohe's runway will close for resurfacing Feb. 19, the Death Angels - along with VMFA-212 and ele- ments of H&MS-24 - will temporarily move to Barbers Point. Approximately one month later, the Death Angels will relieve VMFA-232 from its WestPac deployment, mark- ing the second time in a month that the squadron will pack its equipment and embark for duty elsewhere. Maj. Tom Moore, VMFA- 235's operations officer, has helped coordinate the moves and foresees no special problems. `"I'liere - Will be minimum impact on the operations of the squadron," he remarked. "It'll require some extra hours, make no mistake about it. But that's just the way it is." That extra effort is further complicated by a Marine Corps Combat Readiness Evaluation Systems test, being conducted now; three of the squadron's aircraft on temporary duty in California; - and a Commanding Gener- al's inspection scheduled for a week after the squadron moves to Barbers Point. "Our three aircraft in California will join the squadron at Barbers Point," Moore said, "as will the CG's inspection team. The only problems will be for the inspectors who have to go across the island. "It's all been planned so that it will have the least impact on the squadron," he continued. "None of the activities will interfere with our combat readiness or pre- deployment planning for our move to Japan." According to Moore, the move to Barbers Point will improve combat efficiency. "It's going to increase our combat readiness three or four percentage points," Moore remarked. "We have some really good air/ ground missions scheduled, and we'll be using some ordnance that we don't normally get to use. Our air crews and ordnance personnel are very excited about that." A closer working relation- ship with the Navy's VC-1 squadron from Barbers Point will be another plus. VC-1 is a Fleet Composite Squadron that operates A-4s and helicopters. "We look forward to working with another adversary squadron, espe- cially since we'll have more training assets available to us," Moore said. "Most notably, we'll have more than one runway to work with." VMFA-235 is expected to return here in nine months. "We'll come back to a good, resurfaced runway," Moore said. "And that's the greatest benefit of all." Marine Barracks celebrates birthday Marine Barracks Hawaii, Pearl Harbor, will celebrate up its 81st anniversary Saturday. Fred Carr Washington (MCNews) - Marines developed the tactics of vertical assault in Korea in the 1950s, and for three decades the concept has proven to be a natural complement to the Corps' amphibious warfare. It will remain so, but with a different look. Assault Marines of the future will run from the cargo ramp of a unique looking aircraft. One which will be able to take off and land like a helicopter, but while in the air fly at low speed like a helicopter or at high speed like an airplane by tilting its proprotors upward - like a helicopter - or forward - like a turboprop airplane. With the joint services development of a 'tilt-rotor aircraft, known as the "Osprey," plans are being readied to retire one of the Corps' most venerable troop carriers, the CH-46 Sea. Knight. Fielded in the mid-60s, this helicopter has provided medium assault lift capabili- ties for generations of Marines serving around the world. Its successor, say Marine aviation experts, is an aircraft whose time has come. According to LtCol. Daniel Moseler, Marine Corps JVX Requirements Coordinator at HQMC, a new era of aviation is on the way with the advent of tilt-rotor technology. Among its biggest virtues are worldwide self-deployability to contingency areas; greater crash and combat survivabil- ity; and a design created with ease of maintenance in mind. Development and testing of the "Osprey" is the result of a 1981 decision by the Secretary of Defense for a joint services development of a multi-mission, advanced vertical lift aircraft for the 1990s. It was a logical consideration for the Marine Corps which was already looking for a replacement for its aging fleet of CH-46 helicopters. Today, the "Osprey" remains a joint program, benefitting from input on its development from all services. The production models, when fielded in 1991, will provide a basic aircraft common to all services but uniquely tailored to the specific mission require- ments of each. "One of the biggest advantages of the tilt-rotor is its capability to deploy without strategic air or sealift," Moseler explained. "One of the aircraft's design requirements is the capabili- ty to fly 2,100 nautical miles without aerial refueling support. That's a distance roughly equal to that from the West Coast to Hawaii. "Everything we're seeing right now says we're going to meet that requirement," Moseler said. "Another way of looking at it is that, in 14 hours flying time, we could fly a squardon from MCAS New River to Norway in a contingency type operation. By not tying up a C-5 fleet to transport a squadron of helicopters, you give the national commander quite a bit of flexibility in moving assets around." The aircraft's potential performance in support of amphibious assaults is 'equally impressive. The "Osprey" will have two-wave capability, allowing it to make two separate payload deliveries of 24 combat- equipped Marines from the ship to a landing zone 50 nautical miles away without refueling. Should the mission demand inland assault, the "Osprey" could carry 24 combat troops a distance of 200 nautical miles and return. That, according to Moseler, provides much needed flexibility to move around weather, terrain and enemy concentrations, as well as giving commanders a tremendous means of providing lateral reinforce- ments. At sea, the "Osprey" will be carried aboard LHA and LHD type ships. Though actual dimensions of the aircraft may vary slightly as it goes through developmen- tal stages, it will require a shipboard storage space somewhat larger than the CH-46, but smaller than that required for the CH-53E helicopter. Of particular importance, according to Moseler, is the combat survivability and crash worthiness of the tilt- rotor. "You'll see this as a very survivable aircraft, both from a passenger standpoint and component design." Part of the technology making this possible is a compressible fuselage floor. As the floor compresses to absorb the impact, passenger seats will simultaneously "stroke" on load attenuating supports. Combined with these features are break- away wings, which will prevent them from crushing the cabin of the aircraft. While these designs may sound revolutionary, most of them are already proven technology, Moseler points out. Only the collapsible wing feature is truly unique to the "Osprey." Ease of maintenance and repair is another area where engineers are making no compromises. Each part is screened before its final design by a reliability and maintainability working group, to ensure that it can withstand extended opera- tions without major mainten- ance. Initial designs are then tested before they go into production by Marines drawn from the fleet. Among the things they look for are how easy the parts are to get to and what kind of training, tools and maintenance facilities will be needed to make the repairs. Test pilots who have flown the XV-15 test version of the tilt-rotor aircraft are confident of the Osprey's ability to live up to expectations. Moseler, whose career has included piloting the UH-1, CH-46 and CH-53, says the craft handles like a very stable helicopter in a hover and a highly maneu- verable fixed-wing aircraft in forward flight. A National Prayer Beak- fast was held at the Enlisted Club here,,1 an. :t I, with 5:S5 in attendance, the largest number of participants in several years, according to Col. C.D. Robinson, com- manding officer of the Air Sta Lion.

The prayer breakfast originated in Washington, D.C., in 1943 when two members of the House of Representatives got together to discuss mutual concerns and joined in prayer at the end of the discussion.

Soon other members of the House followed this act and discovered that members of the Senate also prayed after meetings. When Dwight D. Eisenhower became presi- dent, he sanctioned this practice, developing it into the National 'Prayer Break- fast.

The guest speaker at the breakfast here was Army LtGen. W,11. Schneider, Deputy Commander in chief, and. Chief of Staff, U.S.

At dawn, the battalion marched eastward, making their way to the airfield.

The facility was or Marine' Amphibious Force objective to be secured by the remainder of Regimental Landing Team-3.

As the exercise came to a close, the Marines from 1/3 marched back to the PTA base camp and prepared to return to Kaneohe Bay.

Much was learned and many skills were practiced, but the final verdict, however, would be determined by the evaluators who accompa- nied 1/3.

"The evaluation was conducted by the 3d Marine Regiment to determine if the last several months of company training has paid off," said Maj. John McGuire, senior evaluator. "After testing the units with various problems, such as night and day attacks, coordinating fire support and a battalion defense, we found that they meet or better any standards HQMC has set for an infantry company or battalion.

"Considering they spent 10 days in this harsh environment prior to the test," McGuire continued, "they stayed very motivated and desired to get the most out of this training. They battled both the enemy and the elements, and won."

Activities slated for Black History Month "The Afro-American

Family: Historical Strengths for the New Century" is the theme for Black History Month.

The original observance Of black history actually began in 1926 by Dr. Carter B. Woodson, scholar and founder of the Association 14 the Study of Afro-American Life and History.

Woodson was convinced that a public celebration would help all Americans become conscious of their

Ct own ethnic heritage andthat ?such an awareness would assist in developing an understanding and a mutual respect for one another's background.

He chose a week in February in which the birthdays of Frederick Douglass (Feb. 7) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12) were celebrated and intro- duced the concept of a Black History Week.

The special observance of black history has spanned the month of February since 1976 to provide more time for programs, observances and celebrations.

Throughout the month, military installations participate in, and support command and community programs, activities and exhibits by emphasizing pride, spirit and teamwork.

The 1985 Bach History Month and Week scheduled activities are: Feb. 7 - "All Hands" formation

at Camp KM. Smith, with the Commanding General and Deputy Com- manding General as guest speakers.

Feb. 8 - Cultural night featuring Reggae band at the com- missioned officers open mess, Lockwood Sub Bane, Pearl Harbor, at 7 p.m.

Wait. Now you can get

an IRA Loan for only $68 a month.

Marine aircraft fly n ground support

by Cpl. Pat Lewandowski The life of a Marine,

whether in training or combat, is the most important resource the Marine Corps has. But to sustain that Marine with food, ammunition, medical services and other needs, other Marines and sailors are behind the scenes, cooking, driving and flying.

MABS-24 had the task of supporting both air and ground units when they set up a forward detachment at Pohakuloa Training Area on the island of Hawaii.

The detachment of 30 Marines provided additional crash crew and refueling capabilities, as well as communications, supply, motor transport and dining facility equipment.

gik Although primarily 1111, responsible for supporting

aviation assets at PTA, MABS-24 Marines did not hesitate to lend a hand to other units training in this desolate region of Hawaii.

A Huey gets refueled at PTA with the help of MABS-24 Marines.

MABS personnel were involved with refueling helicopters from HMM-165 and HMH-463, using the Helicopter Expedient Refueling System. Accord- ing to SSgt. William Wilson, NCOIC of the refuelers, the HERS was designed for small operations on the forward edge of a battle area, close to enemy lines.

"This is a very flexible asset to the aviation community," said Wilson.

"It's modular and can be adapted to any situation. The basic unit has a 50 gallon-per-minute pump, and several fuel pods. The pods hold 500 gallons of jet fuel, which is gravity-fed into a filter. The unit also comes with two refueling points which can be expanded, if necessary.

"In a combat situation, we would be located with a small group of helicopters or

MABS-24 Marines fill fuel pods used in the Helicopter Expedient Refueling System.

DoD eyes cost of spare parts Spare parts for weapons

and equipment are vital to Marine Corps readiness. They are also under the keen eye of Congress and an interested American public.

Challenging suspected overpricing of spare parts is actively encouraged as a duty responsibility. ALMAR 250/84 (CMC Message 261501Z Nov 84) reiterates .policy from the Secretary of Defense that prices paid for spare parts be fair and reasonable.

Servicemembers and civilian employees who identify and report cases of overpricing and who are responsible for actual or future cost savings can receive special recognition, to include a monetary. award.

Overpricing of parts purchased from local sources .should be reported to the Station contracting officer. In the case of spare parts managed by MCLB Albany, -Ga., information should be passed to the Competition Advocate at AUTOVON 460 - :5648 or by correspondence addressed to the Command- ing General, Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Ga. -31704-5000.

If the spare parts in question were purchased by another agency for the Marine Corps, the DoD Hotline should be contacted at Toll Free (800) 424-9098; FTS 693-5080; or AUTOVON 223-5080.

More than 23,400 contacts have been received since the program went into effect in June 1981. Of those, 7,635 resulted in substantive inquiries and have led to cost ,reductions, improved man- agement procedures and increased credibility for DoD.

Statistics. from 1984- are even more encouraging for supporters of the hotline; nearly one third of all calls now lead to inquiries, compared to a previous 20 percent inquiry-to-call rate.

Pledging to support the continued use of this valuable tool, Secretary Weinberger said it has taught Doll to listen carefully, to proceed cautiously and, if warranted, to act firmly.

Telephone numbers for the Defense. Hotline are: Toll free (800) 424-9098; AUTOVON 223-5080; and FTS 693-5080. Or write to: Defense Hotline,. The Pentagon, Washington, D.C. 20301-1900.

Harriers just behind the FEBA," Wilson continued. "When the battle moves forward, we move with it to support the aircraft."

In addition to supplement- ing Bradshaw Army Air Field with fuel and crash vehicles, MABS-24 person- nel also supported ground units with transportation, mechanics and logistical support. Along with a BSSG detachment, MABS pro- vided the various units with everything they needed to train.

"Although our primary job here (Pohakuloa) is to provide crash crews and refueling personnel, we have helped everyone in some way," said CWO-3 Melvin Thomas, of MABS-24. "We not only operated as a forward detachment, but also trained other personnel in the operation of the HERS and other equipment. The mission has been fulfilled beyond our expectations."

Missile exercises test fighter pilots by Sgt. Christopher Wood

A missile exercise took VMFA-235 to new heights of efficiency, Jan. 15 and 16, during training at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai.

"Death Angel" pilots guided their F-4 Phantoms in for landings at Barking Sands, loaded their missiles, took off and fired at drones launched by the range facility.

"In the past, we either loaded the missiles at Kaneohe Bay or deployed the entire squadron to Barking Sands," explained Maj. Tom Moore, Death Angels' operations officer. "But, this time, we decided to deploy to a forward controlled site in the way we would have to do it in combat."

The squadron was able to take off from here, land at Barking Sands and take off again despite possible mechanical difficulties. "It says something for our aircraft and radar reliability that we could complete that extra sortie," Moore remarked.

Reliability of equipment enabled the Death Angels to fire seven radar-guided

missiles, and seven Sidewinder missiles, in two days even though they had five days to do it in.

Extra days were provided in their schedule in case of equipment malfunction or bad weather. "Weather prevented us from starting the operation on Jan. 14," Moore said, "and if we had any radar or aircraft problems, we wanted the extra time to correct them."

Besides providing training for radar and aircraft technicians, the missile exercise gave experience to the pilots themselves. "We have nine pilots in the command who had never shot a missile," Moore remarked. "This exercise got them combat- qualified.

"Credit for the success of the exercise goes to the ground crews," Moore said. "It's a direct result of the enlisted Marine who is willing to work 12 to 14 extra hours to get the equipment up and maintain it. Thanks to Marines like these, the probability of a kill with the Sparrow missile is quite high in all of MAG-24's fighter attack squadrons."

BGen. O.K. Steele, Commanding General, 1st Marine Brigade, stands with the Intramural Pistol Team first place winners after they received their award. From left to right are: Capt. J.C. Mordue, MAG-24; SSgt. B.A. Freetage, BSSG; LCpL D.A. Hautala, H&MS-24; Capt. R.J. Barlow, BSSG; and SSgt. S.D. Strebel, 3/3.

Rifle and Pistol Match for the second quarter of FY-85 concluded Jan. 25 with an awards ceremony at the Camp H.M. Smith Training Facility.

Col. M.J. Dube, command- ing officer, Marine Barracks Hawaii, presented the awards, many of which went to his Marines.

The No. 1 team from 1st Marine Brigade handily won the rifle team match with a 26-point margin over the MCAS Kaneohe Bay team. In the pistol team event, however, it was a much closer match as the Brigade team squeaked by the Marine Barracks Hawaii team by only one point.

A new record was set in the individual pistol match as Cpl. M.A. Blackson, Marine Barracks, shot a 291-10X out of 300 possible points. Barracks Marines also swept the General McGee Corn- bined Aggregate awards, which is the total of each individual's rifle and pistol scores.

SSgt. A.R. Square, 3/3, won the individual rifle match with a two-day aggregate score of 479 out of 500 possible. Cpl. S.J. Dooley, HqCo Bde, and Cpl. R.D. Triplett, Marine Barracks, were each two points behind Square and finished second and third, respectively.

When you die you must leave behind everything for which you have worked and saved. The question is, "TO WHOM?" If you have a will, you have already instructed the state, attorneys and judges to act according to YOUR wishes

but It you don't have a will the state wilt simply distribute your estate according to law.

Without a will you let the state determine the disposition of your asset, the welfare of your spouse and the guardianship of your children. Probate costs. taxes and fees increase. What's worse, you rob yourself of the privilege of continuing stewardship through designated gilts. DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF THINKING:

only wealthy people need a will that drawing a will is too complicated or that it is too expensive.

Take the first step toward doing something about that which you own fur you own peace of mind and the benefit of those you hold dear, FOR A FREE INFORMATIVE BOOKLET ABOUT "WILLS" SEND COUPON BELOW.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS FROM FRIENDS TO FRIENDS. I'm perfectly fine. I can drive with my eyes closed. There's nothing wrong with me: Are you joking-I feel great. What am I-a wimp? I'm in great shape to drive. You're not serious are you? What's a couple of beers? Nobody drives 'my car but me. I've never felt better. I can drink with the best of them. But I only had a few. So I had a couple. I can drive rings around anybody. I can drive my own car, thank you. I'm not drunk. I drive better
