IAAF President’s MessageDear members of the media,

With the creation of the IAAF Diamond League, which was first announced on the 2 March 2009, we set out to reinvent the one-day meeting structure of our sport, to bring clarity to the elite international athletics competition, which takes place outside the IAAF World Championships and Olympic Games.

Therefore we were delighted than within a few weeks of the inaugural season opening in 2010 that the attraction of our concept was enthusiastically supported by Samsung who joined us as a committed title sponsor for the series. At the end of first year the success of the Samsung Diamond League was further endorsed by extremely encouraging TV figures.

While there remain many challenges ahead if we are to make further advances and cement the Samsung Diamond League’s position as one of the world’s major sports series, we have made an exceptionally good start and, with the strong support of our partners, we eagerly look forward to the 2011 season.

Replacing the Europe-based Golden League in 2010, with 14 international meets across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States, creating the Diamond League was a calculated gamble aimed to heighten the profile of world-class athletes and the rewards for the forward-thinking move of the IAAF have been substantial.

One thing I can guarantee though, is that the world’s best athletes – in all events – will certainly be present and in peak form on the Samsung Diamond League circuit. With regards to international TV ratings, the 14 meetings of the Samsung Diamond League have seen world audience totals nearly triple in 2010, when compared with 2009, with the hours of coverage dramatically increasing, too, to fully justify the expansion of the one-day diary.

According to TV figures released by Samsung Diamond League’s broadcasting partner, IMG Media, around 252 million people watched the series this year, a 188-per-cent increase on the 87.7 million who followed the old Golden League 12 months earlier.

Hours of TV coverage have also generated impressive figures too, which can only have a positive spin-off for this summer’s IAAF World Championships in Daegu, Korea, and in London, England as the build up to the 2012 Olympics continues to gather pace. 3,425 hours were shown across the globe, 154 per cent up on the previous year.

As witnessed by these TV figures the general public’s huge take-up shows an understanding of what we are trying to achieve and is a ringing endorsement that the Samsung Diamond League is on the right track.

The 2011 Samsung Diamond League calendar of 14 meetings, which begins in Doha on 6 May and concludes in the two finals, Zürich on 8 September and Brussels on 16 September, showcases the stars of 32 track and field event disciplines as they compete for 8 Million USD in prize money. Their season’s goal is to win their event’s sparkling Diamond Race Trophy with its accompanying cash prize of 40,000 USD. It is an intense season long battle for honours that offers the world’s sports fans the very best of the best of invitational track and field competition.

Creation Of Diamond LeagueIAAF Diamond League was launched in March 2009, as a replacement for the IAAF Golden League, to enhance the worldwide appeal of athletics, by going outside Europe for the first time. The 2010 IAAF Diamond League was the first edition of the Diamond League, an annual series of fourteen one-day track and field meetings. The series began on 14 May in Doha and ended on 27 August in Brussels, Belgium.

The SAMSUNG Diamond League is one of the international 1-day competitions which IAAF organises besides the IAAF World Challenge.

The Samsung Diamond League is composed of 14 of the best invitational track and field meetings in the world. The meetings are spread across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA, and compose the top tier of the IAAF’s global one-day meeting competition structure.

This series of 14 meetings showcases 32 event disciplines that are carefully distributed amongst the meetings. In each of the 32 event disciplines there is a “Diamond Race” with points available throughout the 14-meeting season. Winners of each Diamond Race receive a 40,000 USD cash prize and a spectacular Diamond Trophy but more importantly, they will have shown season long consistency to earn the unchallenged honour of being the World Number 1.

Points Points per event discipline at each meeting 1st place 4 points (Final: 8 points) 2nd place 2 points (Final: 4 points) 3rd place 1 point (Final: 2 points) The athlete with the highest number of points in each event discipline at the end of the Samsung Diamond League season wins the “Diamond Race”. In case of equality on points, the number of victories decides, if there still is a tie, the better result at the Final decides. For an athlete to win a Diamond Race and its associated prize, and/or to be ranked in the final points standings, he / she must compete in the final (Zürich or Brussels) of their event discipline.

(source IAAF)

The Vision of the IAAF PresidentUnder the IAAF President’s leadership and based on his vision, all the meetings included at the IAAF Diamond League Calendar have some common goals:

• To build the worldwide appeal of athletics by including meetings outside of Europe in a series of the world‘s best 1Day-Athletics events

• To allow the comeback of “classic athletics” showing all the facets and versatility of the sport and readjusting some of the unfortunate developments of the past years, which focused more and more just on a few events

• To lay a worldwide foundation for a new meeting system, providing each Area with an opportunity to build its own meeting series and develop great events in each Area

• To provide an easily understandable series that connects the meetings with each other

• To provide world class entertainment through outstanding TV images

• To support the Major Championships by building-up stars in many different countries that will be followed by national media wherever they compete

• To allow top athletes to compete at personal record level, which championships are often not ideal for

• To give a fair chance of top athletes of all disciplines to get media exposure, earn their living and have their success in Major Championships being honoured

• To be based on a solid financial basis• To provide the best possible organisational level• To promote and develop athletics

SAMSUNG Diamond League Trophy

Designed exclusively by the Swiss firm Beyer Chronometrie AG for the Samsung Diamond League, the Diamond Race Trophy has a classic cup design topped with a large glass diamond with a traditional brilliant cut. Sitting on a black polished granite base, the 4.8 kilogram and 35 cm high Trophy features steel supports in the shape of a stadium track, perfectly fusing the sport of athletics with the diamond it carries.

The Trophy was designed by Carlo Mutschler, the Head Designer & Goldsmith at Beyer, a company founded in 1760 and currently the oldest watch and jewellery shop in Switzerland. A family-operated business for eight generations, Beyer owns and operates its own jewellery design atelier and a gold and silversmith workshop.

The first 16 winners will be honoured at a ceremony at the Weltklasse in Zurich immediately following the action, on Thursday 8 September. The remaining 16 Diamond Race winners will be crowned at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, the final meeting of the inaugural Samsung Diamond League series, on Friday 16 September. In addition to the trophy, winners will also receive a $ US 40,000 cash prize.

Host CountryQatar in BriefOfficial name: State of QatarCapital City: DohaMain Towns: A l Wakra, Al Rayyan, Al Khor, Dukhan, Mesaieed, Ras Laffan, Industrial City, Al Shamal, Umm SalalNational Day: 18 December

Qatar is one of the most dynamic economies in the Middle East. It has undergone remarkable economic and social development over the last 20 years. With an attractive business environment and a progressive national leadership, the country continues to be one of the fastest growing economies of the region. Having hosted numerous sporting events for over two decades, Qatar has become a major leader of sporting organisation and has helped accelerating the evolution of grassroots athlete development in Asia and the region. Since hosting the Asian Games in 2006 and the AFC Asian Cup 2011, Doha has hosted major sporting events and consistently invested in expanding its national athletes development program, which is supported by the global sports training expertise of the Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence.

With an economic growth rate of 19% in 2010, Qatar has a stable economic situation. The newly formed partnership between Qatar Exchange and the NYSE’s Euronext -20% share ($200 million) represents the largest investment in a foreign exchange.

Home to the third-largest natural gas reserves in the world, in 1997 the country became the biggest LNG producer in the world with 31 million tons. In 2010, the total production will reach 77 million tons. Qatar is constructing the largest European LNG terminal in Wales and the first floating terminal in the world, located in Italy.

Qatar is managing its resources, using oil and gas revenues to implement comprehensive reforms that help transform Qatar’s economy from one that depends largely on oil and gas exports to a diversified economy that depends on knowledge and focuses on high-tech industrial activities and services.

Despite the global financial challenges Qatar’s real estate growth shows little sign of slowing down as most projects in both the public and the private sector are going ahead as planned. The new real estate and urban developments revive heritage and embrace modernity: the redevelopment of the centre of Doha will involve the construction of 750,000 m² of mixed-use space that combines ancient culture with modern technology. The Pearl-Qatar, a multi-billion dollar 4 million square meter reclaimed island, by 2013 will provide upscale housing and amenities for more than 41,000 people, creating 32 km of new coastline. It is the first urban development in Qatar to allow international freehold ownership. Another new district, Lusail, will accommodate 200,000 people on over 35km². It will include an Entertainment district and Energy city.

The country is constantly adapting its infrastructures to new challenges: plans are underway to build a metro rail network to complement the transport infrastructure covering over 140 km when completed, in 5 years. Qatar is also on track to open its new airport with a capacity for 24 million passengers and cargo of 1.4 million tons a year. This corresponds to the demand for additional international passengers’ capacity and will allow Doha to service two A380-800 super jumbos at the same time and 48,000 m² of cargo terminals.

ClimateQatar experiences very hot summers and pleasantly cool winters. In March the average daytime temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius and at night about 17 degrees Celsius, with the pleasant weather extending into April.

Code Of ConductQatar is an Islamic country and as a courtesy, visitors should dress modestly. Swimwear is acceptable on private beaches or by private pools but should not be worn around town. Public displays of affection between men and women are discouraged, and if deemed to infringe on moral values, can be a punishable offence.

Alcohol may be purchased and consumed only on licensed premises. Drinking and driving is a serious offence and the country has zero tolerance towards drugs.

ShoppingIn addition to the ‘Souqs’ where visitors can shop for traditional handicrafts, the city of Doha has a variety of modern shopping malls that offer a wide range of stores selling everything from tourist favorites such as gold ornaments to international brands and consumable.

Shopping hours are generally Saturday to Thursday from 9:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 or later, with the malls open until 10:00. Most shops close on Friday, the traditional day off for most establishments.

Getting AroundTaxis are widely available, and can be clearly distinguished by their ocean-like turquoise paint. In addition, all the city’s top hotels are serviced by an additional fleet of unmarked sedans.

While they often tend to run at prearranged rates, many of them have taxi-meters too, which are hidden discreetly in the driver’s rear-view mirror.
