Assemblyman Honors Local Vets

Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel this week honored four valley veterans, saying “Many of these veterans continued to serve after they hung up the uniform—as first responders, educators, volunteers, and active members of our community. We owe them a great debt of gratitude for everything they have done—and continue to do—for the San Fernando Valley and our nation.” Above, Gabriel honors Dr. Daniel Stepenosky, of Calabasas, who served four and a half years in the United States Navy, where he was engaged in counter narcotics operations off the coast of South America and in Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf. He received the Naval Achievement Medal, National Defense Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Navy Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal. Since 2012, Stepenosky has served as Superintendent of Schools for the Las Virgenes Unified School District.

At left Gabriel honors Ethel Margolin of Canoga Park, who served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Margolin was stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, where she worked with B-24 and B-25 bomber aircraft, and also at the Air Transport Command of the 8th Air Force in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is an active member of “Wings Over Wendy’s”—a camaraderie group for veterans that meets regularly at a Wendy’s Restaurant in Woodland Hills.

At right, WWII veteran Barney Leone, a Wings Over Wendy’s member, addresses the audience. Also honored were Roscoe Frazier of Winnetka, who served in the U.S. Army for over 20 years, where he earned five bronze stars, two purple hearts, and several other awards and decorations, and Robert “Chef Bob” Gale of Canoga Park, who served in the U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret) from 1967 to 1970 and was deployed to Vietnam and Cambodia. In November 1970, Gale joined the LAPD, where he served in the elite Metropolitan Division and was promoted to the rank of Captain. Mr. Gale retired from the LAPD in 1999, and currently serves as a board member of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and as a volunteer at New Friends Homeless Center.

By Miri Rossitto Did you know that the month

of August is filled with so many fantastic reasons to support your local small businesses?

National days give us cause to celebrate everything from the meaningful to the amusing to the absurd. Not many people know that January 2 is National Cream Puff Day. Nor are most aware that October 24 is National Bologna Day? And does anyone still eat bologna?! Anyway, August has some great National Days and if we truly took them to heart, they could positively benefit some of our local entrepreneurs.

August 3rd • National Beer Day - Of COURSE there is a national day for beer! And there is no shortage of incredible places to quench your thirst. The patios at Sagebrush Cantina, Blue Dog Tavern or The Local Peasant are perfect places to throw back a cold one. Fancy a craft experience? Malibu Wines and Beer Garden is lovely while HQ Gastropub will rock you!

August 6th • National Fresh Breath Day - Dentists are some of the hardest working entrepreneurs that we know. They often handle emergencies during off hours, there are plenty of options therefore they must work hard to grow a strong business and let’s be honest, a great healthy smile goes a long way. Some of our

Reasons to Support Small Biz in August favorite dentists are Dr. Susan Fredericks, Dr. Gabe Adjoran, Dr. Ali Saeghi, pediatric dentist Dr. Joe Sciarra, and Dr Dan Hilton in Woodland Hills. (He specializes in sedation dentistry. Yes please!)

August 17th • National Non-Profit Day - Our community is very lucky to have so many life changing and impactful non-profit organizations all around us. We could never

pick a favorite, but here are some honorable mentions: The Valley Cultural Foundation provides vital arts programs and events to our community. Child Development Institute offers an interdisciplinary intervention program as well as having a free community play and learning space. One Generation procures programs and services to seniors and their caregivers. From support to management to meals, One Generation is helping someone every minute of every day.

August 26th • National Dog Day - Dogs make everything better. They are our best friends, our adventure partners and our comfort companions. Want to pamper your pooch with best-in-class products? Visit Healthy

Spot at The Village for an incredible shopping experience. Need your beloved pup to smell like a rose? Paradise Pets Grooming and Daycare has got you covered. (They have FIVE STARS on Yelp!!) Need a doggy daycare? Dioji is a luxury oasis that humans would do anything to luxuriate there. So much fun!

August 30th • National Grief Awareness Day - Death is a part of life however we all react and process it differently. Mental health support and care is one of the most important things that we can do for ourselves, especially in regards to grief. Our House Grief Support offers services and education as well as valuable healing tools and resources. Their children’s grief groups are transformative for kids who need this specialized support.

There are millions of good reasons to shop small and keep it local. National Days, as silly as some can be, do shine a light onto little known industries and businesses. So next time that you hear it’s another National Day, whether it’s National Chopsticks Day or National Cherry Pie Day, consider the businesses, the stories and the hard-working people that are behind the day. Cheers to you!

Bullets on the Boulevard? An early morning alert walker found what appeared to be ammo

lying on the sidewalk in front of the Goodwill store at 21840 Ventura Blvd. She called the LAPD’s non-emergency line and waited until police arrived. They investigated and determined they were actually toy bullets - that looked like the real thing!

August has some great national days. If we took them to heart they could positively benefit small biz.

Metro Debuts Zero-Emission Electric Bus on Orange Line

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has taken delivery of its first zero emission electric bus that will be deployed on the Metro Orange Line later this year after testing is completed.

The 60-foot articulated bus is manufactured by New Flyer and uses state-of-the-art technologies. It is the first of 40 electric buses from New Flyer that will be arriving over the next year.

“Metro continues to seek ways to reduce emissions and help improve our region’s air quality. These zero-emission buses that will provide reliable service while also reducing the agency’s carbon footprint,” said James Butts, the Mayor of Inglewood and the Chair of the Metro Board of Directors. “This is a win-win for our riders, our communities and the environment.”

The Orange Line will be the first line to receive these electric buses with a total of 40 buses to be delivered to the agency and deployed on the Orange Line by the fall of 2020.

The electric buses cost $1.15 million each in a contract valued at $80,003,282. This contract includes the deployment of the

electric buses and associated charging infrastructure.

The new buses will be capable of being recharged at various points along the Orange Line to support its 24/7 operation.

“We are excited to begin operating electric buses as part of Metro’s bus fleet and look forward to achieving our goal of converting the Orange Line to all electric buses in 2020,” said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. “As we continue our transportation revolution, we must continue to make sustainable practices the norm.”

The Metro Board in 2017 unanimously adopted a motion endorsing a comprehensive plan to transition the agency to a 100 percent zero emission bus fleet by 2030. The plan is contingent upon two primary factors: continuous advancements in electric bus technology – which includes an increase in range, reduction of charging times and extension of battery life cycles – as well as a drop in price as the technology develops.

Metro is the largest American transportation agency to endorse such a goal.

Old OSH West Hills to Become Halloween

Super StoreThe old Orchard Supply

Hardware (OSH) at Fallbrook and Victory has been vacant for over two years.

The building, which shares a parking lot with the relatively new Chick fil A, has been fenced off and vacant.

A new sign is announcing that a temporary tenant will be moving in, and the almost 36,000-square-foot building will be a Halloween superstore.

82-Year-Old Beatenand Carjacked

in WinnetkaAn 82-year-old man was

beaten and carjacked earlier this week in Winnetka.

Three African American teens approached him at the parking lot of the Orange Line Metro Station at Winnetka and Victory, where he had parked his car to take the bus downtown.

The elderly man, who still works part time as a jeweler, emerged scratched and bruised from the ordeal. No video surveillance of the incident was available to help identify the perpetrators, as cameras are only focused on the Metro stop, not the parking lot.

United Chambers Votes to Join

Make Privacy WorkIn a unanimous vote, United

Chambers of Commerce has decided to join the Make Privacy Work Coalition which looks to help both businesses and consumers in regards to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) which will take effect January 1, 2020.

In its simplest form, the CCPA is a bill that enhances privacy rights and consumer protection for residents of California. A businesses falls under the CCPA if they have over 50,000 data points that have been collected over a year. These data points can consist of a combination of credit cards, I.P addresses, or online visitors.

According to United Chambers, the problem with the CCPA is the clarity in which it is written allows for many unintended rules that both businesses and consumers have to oblige by. As it is written, if someone were to rob a store and then request that store and any other business nearby delete all footage of them, then the business must comply or they would be fined. The Make Privacy Work Coalition looks to prevent these gray areas by voting on other bills and amendments to the CCPA.

Word on the Street------------------------------------------------------From Kathleen Sterling

We get a lot of interesting calls at the paper. People think that because we print the news we are the absolute authority on almost anything and everything.

First off, we’re flattered. Second, we really try and help find the answers for our callers.

Where can I rent reindeer? Got it. What’s the name of the vet on Topanga? One second. What was the name of the Chinese restaurant at Winnetka and Ventura 30 years ago? House of Kwong.

Part of it is Google savvy. Part of it is just having been in the community for so long that we have, or know where to dig up, the answers. We also have archives of stories and photos and news stretching back to the 80’s - and amazing people we can call who have instant recall of historical events and places.

We did get a disturbing call this week. A reader called in to say a neighbor who lives on De Mina Street in Woodland Hills actually feels sorry for the coyotes and is feeding them - leaving raw chicken and bowls of water in front of her house. Neighborhood pleas to stop this - as it brings in packs of coyotes - have gone nowhere. Last week a coyote jumped a fence on Dumetz and killed two small dogs - in front of their family.

I told the woman we can’t print the name of the offender, but hopefully more readers will see this and put pressure on her.

We also suggested calling Animal Control and got her the local number.

I know how serious leaving food out can be. I live in the mountains of Agoura and just two weeks ago was having dinner on the patio when I got the call that my mother was being rushed by ambulance to the ER. We jumped up and left everything as is to go to her. I finally had to leave the hospital at 1 am to go home and clean up - or I would have had a very scary scene of animals sitting around the table chowing down - and I have everything from coyotes to bobcats and mountain lions roaming my yard!

I also have amazing neighbors and we all look out for each other and have similar sentiments about the wildlife surrounding us. They were here first, but we are

cautious and careful. Hopefully the De Mina

neighbor will read this. Or Animal Control will have a chat with her. Hopefully we will have helped in some way.

Over the years we’ve gotten stop signs installed, trees trimmed, beauty pageants cancelled - all through the pages of the paper. The old adage, “The pen is mightier than the sword” has certainly been true in our case.

We’re here to inform, educate, incentivise, and always offer help.

The Garry Marshall Theatre in Burbank presents the off Broadway musical “The Spitfire Grill,” one of the most popular recent musicals, with over 600 productions worldwide including in Germany, South Korea, Japan, Australia and London.

“The Spitfire Grill” takes place in Gilead, Wisconsin – a bucolic place for those who have dreamed of a town so small they roll the sidewalk up at night; a place where you can walk a hundred miles and see the trees. At least that is how it seems when Percy, a feisty parolee following her dreams, arrives. She based her living there on a page from an old travel book, as she stumbled into Hannah’s Spitfire Grill.

The Grill, the only eatery in this quiet town, is for sale but there are no takers; so newcomer Percy suggests to Hannah that she raffle it off. Entry fees are $100 and the best essay on why you want the grill wins. Soon, mail is arriving by the wheelbarrow full and things are definitely cookin’ at the Spitfire Grill.

This stirring musical erupts when Hannah’s troubled past is confronted with Percy’s struggle to start again, making everyone’s life in this small town anything but quiet. A searching wife, a

mysterious vagrant, a gentle sheriff, a brutish husband, and an irritatingly irresistible busybody collide in a musical that bubbles over with toe-tapping fun and soaring, heartfelt melodies accompanied by mandolin, accordion, guitar, violin, and cello – and the musicians step forward to play many of the characters.

Broadway’s Linda Kerns has joined the cast as Effy. She appeared on Broadway in the original productions of “Big River” and as Heidi von Sturm in “Nine,” and off Broadway in “Smoke on the Mountain.” Kerns replaces the previously announced Diane King Vann.

The winner of the 2001 Richard Rodgers Production Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (Stephen Sondheim, chair), it also received Best Musical nominations from the New York Outer Critics Circle and Drama League as well as two Drama Desk nominations.

There are 25 performances only, July 10 to August 11.) For tickets and information, please visit www.garrymarshalltheatre.org or call (818) 955-8101. The theatre is located at 4252 W Riverside Drive, Burbank.

By Theda Kleinhans ReichmanDC Comics first introduced

the world to a young teenager with super powers back in the late 1930s. He is now back in Warner Bros. fun-filled screen adventure “Shazam!”

Billy Batson (Asher Angel of TV’s “Andi Mack) is a street smart 14 year-old who has been in many foster homes. The latest is run by a caring couple (Marta Milans of TV’s “Killer Women” and Cooper Andrews of TV’s “The Walking Dead”) who have five other kids in their care. Soon Billy is befriended by Freddie (Jack Dylan Grazer of “It”) who is obsessed with superheroes.

But before the main story begins there is a prologue where we meet two youngsters. One is a boy who desperately wants to be as special to his dad as his big brother is. Instead he’s belittled by both of them. When he matures the boy becomes Dr. Thaddeus Sivanna (Mark Strong of the “Kingsman” movies), who is the villain of the piece.

The prologue then cuts to a small boy at a carnival with his teenage mother. When they become separated she never tries to find him so young Billy is placed in foster care. At this point the main story begins.

At school Freddie, who walks with a crutch, is bullied by two brothers. When Billy tries to rescue Freddie he is quickly pursued by the two older boys. To escape them he jumps into a subway car that takes him to the realm of an old wizard who is looking for a pure spirit so he can transfer his powers to him. With the magic word “SHAZAM!” the wizard transforms Billy into a man (Zachary Levi of TV’s “Chuck” and Disney’s “Tangled.”) Levi is able to give the adult superhero the innocence and sensibilities of a kid whenever Billy shouts out “Shazam.”

Billy reveals his superhero side to Freddie who is delighted. At this point the two boys try to discover what powers Billy actually has. This is where the real fun begins. Levi is adorable as he discovers he can fly and shoot lightning bolts from his fingertips. He also becomes famous when Freddie puts his actions on Facebook and YouTube. This alerts doctor Sivanna who wants these powers for himself alone.

Levi as the manly hero who

For Film Fun Say “Shazam!”really is a kid inside, literally steals the movie which is a good thing. However the film, directed by David F. Sanderg, with a screenplay by Henry Gayden, could have been even better if some of the lengthy battle scenes were shorter in duration. But overall “Shazam!” is loads of fun for adults and kids.

“Shazam!” has a running time of 132 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and language.

“Shazam!” is now available on Blu-ray and DVD and contains more than 90 minutes of super charged special features. They include an exclusive motion comic: “Superhero Hooky” as well as an alternate opening and ending plus deleted scenes. And that’s not all. There’s a gag reel, audition footage, “Shazam’s” backstory and an on set feature with Zachary Levi.

Hollywood Pantages Theatre is proud to announce that the L.A. premiere of “The Simon & Garfunkel Story,” the internationally-acclaimed hit show, will play a five-performance engagement from February 21 to 23, 2020. The immersive concert-style theater show chronicles the amazing journey shared by the folk-rock duo, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

“The Simon & Garfunkel Story” tells the story from their humble beginnings as Tom & Jerry to their incredible success as one of the best-selling music groups of the ‘60s to their dramatic split in 1970. It culminates with the famous “The Concert in Central Park” reunion in 1981 with more than half a million fans in attendance. Using huge projection photos and original film footage, the show also features a full live band performing all of their hits, including “Mrs. Robinson,” “Cecilia,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Homeward Bound” and many more.

Tickets are available now exclusively to 2019-20 Pantages season ticket holders. Information and ticketing can be found at: www.thesimonandgarfunkelstory.com.

Pacific Lodge in Woodland Hills has served as a haven for boys who need the opportunity and support to turn their lives around. On Thursday, August 1, that comes to an end as the last boys on the campus leave to join other boys at an Optimist Youth Home. But it isn’t the end of Pacific Lodge.

arrive buildings will be renovated and redecorated to give them a fresh look and feel. Sheets, décor, bathroom accoutrements, healthcare items, hygiene – you name it, it is part of the change-over.

Optimists Clubs, Woodland Hills Rotary and individual members of the community have been dropping off donations for weeks to help with the renovation. Now it is time for more of us to help out.

The Optimists have established a registry at Walmart to help guide us as to what is needed. You can go to www.walmart.com/lists/view-events-registry-items?id=1cc098627-9ebf-41f8-8eb5-44667447fe1a.

The registry is in the name of Optimist. The Lodge would appreciate receiving the donations a few days before the girls arrive.

This is a pilot program and Pacific Lodge was asked to take it on. These girls have been through so much in their young lives. It will take the support of the entire community to make it work and serve the girls in the best way possible.

If I told you that you have the power to change multiple lives for the better, would you do it? Of course you would. So, this is your chance. You can make life better for these girls. It doesn’t cost a lot, but it will make a huge difference to them.

In the long tradition of Pacific Lodge receiving support from the community, let’s show these girls that this community cares about them and their futures.

On August 4 the first group of girls moves into the Lodge to take their turn at creating new lives. Up to 18 girls who are victims of sexual exploitation will move in to the Lodge.

It sounds simple: the boys leave and the girls arrive – never the twain shall meet. Simple it is not. For its entire existence the Lodge has housed boys. They’ve slept there, learned there, changed their lives there. The campus is geared toward serving boys. Right down to the curtains on the dorm windows.

So how do we make the girls feel welcome when everything around them is about boys? It is quick change time. From when the boys leave until the girls

By: Janey M. RifkinBusy lives, and less time

to spend in the kitchen? There are many options from

which to choose and still provide delicious and nutritious meals for the family. Thankfully, these days there are quick-fix meals and ordering in which is similar to eating out.

Any meal that does not require silverware for the main course falls into the easy category. Most everyone loves sandwiches, but they’re missing more than a fork and knife and easily overrun with calories, salt, and fat. Starting with whole grain bread, the fiber you get is good for your heart and will help the meal feel more satisfying. And hey, don’t just add lettuce to the meat within. Try sliced cucumber, sliced peppers, shredded carrots, and spinach, all will work well within two slices of bread.

Get creative by upgrading your condiment from mayo which adds calories and fat but little nutrients to mashed avocado or hummus. Both add flavor and texture along with nutrients like fiber and potassium.

By now chances are we’ve all tried frozen dinners. They are incredibly convenient and surprisingly tasty. But, they also can be a minefield of calories, salt, and fat. Look for meals that have between 300 to 500 calories, less than 4 grams of saturated fat, and no more than 600 mg of sodium. Now comes the embellishment. Add your own cooked veggies to the store-bought dinner entrée, serve with a salad and finish the meal with some fruit such as orange slices or a wedge of watermelon or pineapple.

The most convenient to the easy-meal preparer is to open a can of soup but the sodium content is a major stopping point, Low or lower sodium soup is a place to start. And you can turn a can of soup into a more nourishing and presentable main meal by adding a bag of microwave-steamed frozen vegetables, such as cauliflower, peas and carrots or spinach. Mixing in a can of low-sodium beans like chickpeas or kidney beans, for fiber and

protein. Many folks dilute the sodium by adding one cup of water.

Last resort, cold cereal, is actually the perfect meal for healthy, fast food. Cereal is a grain so to make it a complete meal, add protein, and fruits or veggies. Start by choosing whole-grain cereal with little, if any, added sugars. Then try adding in some fruit like blueberries (frozen, defrost if fresh out of season) or a sliced banana. Now sprinkle it with nuts

or seeds (almonds or pumpkin seeds) for crunch or protein. For a parfait-presentation – top cold cereal with yogurt, berries, and flax seeds.

Using CBDfor Pain

Any meal that does not required silverware falls into the easy category.

Rotary “Freezes” to Feed HungryOn the hottest day of this week members of the Rotary Club of

Woodland Hills took to the freezer at the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission to prepare meals for the families there trying to get back on their feet. Shown above from left are Sheri Polak, Eva Hainer, Harvinder Singh, Mark Stewart, Bob Reeves; in the front, Betty West and Pami Kauhr. Not shown but also volunteering was Jeff Stern.

Weekend warrior? Injured? Just old?

If you suffer from chronic pain or pain from an injury, illness or aging, CBD can help alleviate suffering. There are a variety of options available at Remedista - the “essential CBD resource” in Woodland Hills.

Owner Marina Krigman consults with her clients to find out exactly what ails them - and what she can offer to help ease the pain.

“My goal is to help people out of pain,” she told Valley News Group. That includes joint pain, arthritis, inflammation, back, neck and knee pain, muscle pain and more.

The store offers both topical solutions and tinctures. There are coffees, teas and juices with CBD. “Bath salts for soaking are also good for join pain,” counsels Krigman.

Her clients include amateur and professional athletes, executives who sit at a desk all day, and older residents suffering from stiffness and pain. “Actually, my mother used CBD for knee pain for two months, and the pressure in her eyes from glaucoma went down,” said Krigman. “I can’t prove CBD was what helped, but there was a direct correlation.”

This Saturday the vegan food truck “Fancy Taco” will be at the store from 3 to 7 pm. Weekends Kligman hosts events and food trucks at 22831 Ventura. Store hours are 11 am to 7 pm every day. Call (818) 400-3297 or email [email protected] with questions.

By Katie SterlingCancer is no laughing matter,

and yet, Justin Sandler proves that a little levity during such an arduous journey may be the best medicine after all.

In his one-man show entitled “Embrace. Love. Free Cancer,” Sandler presents a multi-media look at his personal story in discovering his diagnosis, fighting cancer’s curveballs and ultimately, discovering what truly matters in life.

Unbeknownst to him, Sandler had a massive growth in the center of his chest that was not only cancerous, but also one that was aggressively pushing on both his lungs and heart. Needless to say, the day he got that phone call was life changing. While blindsided by the news, it seems as if Sandler knew one thing without hesitation; he would be documenting every step of his cancer journey. After all, as a filmmaker (photographer, actor, drummer extraordinaire, etc.), it seemed only natural to take to the camera to share the good, the bad and the ugly. Through this compilation, intercut with reenactments, poetry, music and anthropomorphic discussions, Sandler holds nothing back.

Both heartbreaking and at times hilarious, Sandler doesn’t shy away from sharing how much a toll cancer took on him both physically and mentally. In the aforementioned video diaries, Sandler truly brings the audience into his journey almost as if it’s real time updates, not looking back at videos long since recorded. They serve to highlight the bitter truth of what cancer looks like and yet, no matter how dire the circumstances were, Sandler never shied away

from updating his followers. At the time, with no real knowing of how his journey would end, Sandler’s spirit is nothing short of impressive as he fights to maintain a positive outlook.

Peppered into the show are conversations Sandler holds

with various organs in his body, including the tumor itself, to not only bring a bit of laughter but actually help the audience understand the scientific nature of it all. It’s also through these conversations that Sandler expresses his internal struggles. After all, cancer may be physically changing his body but it also seriously affects the mind and one’s outlook on life. Struggling with self-realization of what’s truly worth it, Sandler opens his heart in more ways than one.

Condensing one’s cancer experience into a 90-minute show isn’t a small feat and yet, Sandler is able to touch on every nuance that made up his story in the hopes of inspiring others. “Embrace. Love. Free Cancer,” reflects that while cancer is devastating and at times, hard to wrap your head around, it’s also a reminder that it is possible to be fierce in the face of what scares you.

While his retelling of his journey is a one-man show, it serves the message that it’s also not a one-man journey to healing. It takes a village of professionals and an assortment of loved

ones to rally alongside oneself affirming positivity every step of the way. It’s clear how gracious Sandler is and how passion leads every step…in his journey, in his sharing of his story and in his final embracing his cancer.

Since its construction in 1994, the Rancho Las Virgenes Composting Facility (Rancho) in Calabasas has turned biosolids separated from wastewater into class A – Exceptional Quality garden compost. This compost is then given away, free of charge on Saturdays, to the public as part of the Las Virgenes Triunfo Joint Powers Authority (JPA) Community Compost program.

Unfortunately, due to unexpected damage from the Woolsey Fire, compost has been unavailable to the public since June 15th.

During the Woolsey Fire, the fierce Santa Ana winds pushed the flames toward Rancho ultimately surrounding the structure. The facility sustained damage to the Amendment Building, Reactor Building, and Control Building. Unfortunately, the most significant damage was sustained at the Amendment Building where sawdust, also referred to as amendment, is initially introduced to the composting process in the Amendment Bin. Additional damage was sustained to the amendment loading area and the dust collector associated with the amendment feed process.

Normally, the amendment is then added to the dewatered biosolids obtained from the

wastewater treatment process produced by the Tapia Water Reclamation Facility. The resulting mixture traverses its way through a complex blending method, including stringent testing to ensure quality and public safety, for over 45 days.

The damage to the Amendment Bin has resulted in an extended shutdown.

Currently, the old Amendment Bin been has been removed and the new Amendment Bin is being constructed. Once on-line, the composting process could be restarted, but with significant operator intervention due to a lack of functioning conveyance equipment.

Under normal circumstances, Rancho composts year round, even though the demand for the exceptional quality compost rises and falls with the planting seasons. Despite being off-line since November of last year, there was enough product on hand to continue the Community

Compost program through the first half of 2019.

“Composting using the biosolid waste from Tapia helps to minimize our carbon footprint because we have removed the need to haul away the material,” said Janna Orkney, JPA Board President. “Closing the sustainability loop with all of our JPA services, including composting, highlights our commitment to environmental stewardship and the community.”

The plant hopes to be back on-line in early 2020.

Firefighters fight the blaze at the compost facility during the Woolsey Fire.

Compost Facility Damaged in Fire Offline Until 2020
