1. Sudbury residents who are 60 and older or under 60 and have a disability are eligible for van rides. You must preregister with the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority (MWRTA) to schedule a ride. Applications are available from Van Drivers, the Senior Center or the MWRTA.

2. To pay for rides, please send a check or money order to the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority (checks payable to MWRTA) at 15 Blandin Ave., Framingham, MA 01702. Your account will be debited when you take a ride on the van.

3. Once the account is set up, call the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority Central Reservation phone line at 508-820-4650 to request a ride by the Senior Center van at least 48 hours in advance of the ride.

The Skeptic’s Guide to American History—DVD Series September 9—December 9, no class November 25

Wednesdays, 9:30-11:30 AM

Everyone recognizes as myths the idea that Columbus was the first to discover America or the story that George Washington admitted cutting down a cherry tree. But very few realize how much of what we think we know about American history is also mythical and mistaken. Historians recognize that many popular beliefs about history in general -and about U.S. history in particular-are myths, either totally false or, at best, only half true.

This lecture series from The Teaching Company features Professor Mark A. Stoler, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Vermont. Each lecture will be augmented by a volunteer moderator who will provide additional information and lead discussion on the topic of the day. Please call the Senior Center at (978) 443-3055 to sign up. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–————————————————————-———-

Perhaps the greatest of all is HMW Turner whose art greatly influenced the impressionists. Note: A visit to the Museum of British Art at Yale University may occur in early 2016. Those taking the course will have preference if the museum reopens on schedule.

Volunteering Makes You Happy! One wonderful benefit to volunteering is that it can make you happy! Research shows volunteers are healthier and happier than others who don’t volunteer. What opportunities are available here at the Sudbury Senior Center? Our F.I.S.H. (Friends in Service Helping) program has been a success for 45 years now (!) due to the generosity of people like you. People whose family or friends are unable to drive them to medical appointments can call the FISH line to request a ride. Our FISH Coordinators then find an available FISH volunteer driver to bring them to the appointment. Many a friendship has been created this way. Neighbors meet neighbors! To find out more and to learn about all of the volunteer opportunities through the Sudbury Senior Center, please leave your name and number for Ed Gottmann, Sudbury Senior Center Volunteer Coordinator at (978) 443-3055. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Mercury Collection Saturdays, October 3 and 17 11:00 AM-1:00 PM

Mercury is a highly toxic compound that needs to be removed from the home. It should not be included in your weekly trash, as this may cause it to be released into the environment.

Bring your mercury containing items to the Senior Center and we will make sure they are safely and properly disposed of. This includes items such as old mercury thermometers or thermostats, small fluorescent lightbulbs, and other small mercury containing items. While supplies last, you will receive one mercury-free digital thermometer for your contribution. For information, please call the Senior Center at (978) 443-3055.

What is a Lockbox and why would I want one?

A lockbox is a small keysafe that can be attached to your home. Your house key is kept locked inside and is accessible only to the Sudbury Fire Department during an emergency. This is helpful to the Fire Department should they need to respond to your home and find that your door is locked. If you have questions or would like a lockbox, please leave a message for Volunteer Coordinator Ed Gottmann. Those who can afford to, pay $60 toward the cost of the next lockbox.
