Dr Chan is currently the Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at The University of Hong Kong and Honorary Consultant in Queen Mary Hospital. He is specialized in living donor liver transplantation with special interests in transplant oncology.He graduated from King’s College London Medical School, University of London in 2001 and attained his fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 2008, and Master of Surgery in 2019. He joined HKU as Clinical Assistant Professor in 2009 and became tenured Clinical Associate Professor in 2015.His research interests focus on multidisciplinary management of hepatocellular carcinoma such as downstaging treatment for locally advanced disease. He is the pioneer for an innovative liver augmentation surgery namely Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy (ALPPS) and has acquired one of the largest single-center experience in ALPPS for hepatocellular carcinoma. He also performed the world-first ALPPS in a child with hepatoblastoma on 24 October 2013 (Chan et al. World J Gastroenterol 2014. 20(29): 10208-10211). Moreover, he advocated the use of 3-dimensional (3D) laparoscopy for major hepatectomy which is now being adopted as the standard visualization technology for laparoscopic liver resection in Queen Mary Hospital. Dr. Chan was also one of the chief surgeons for the first auxiliary living donor liver transplantation, the first dual graft and the first donor interchange liver transplantation and the first right posterior section graft with right hepatic vein reconstruction in Hong KongDr Chan is the Immediate Past chairman of the Vanguard Committee in International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS). He was the Past President of the Asian Surgical Association (2015-2017). He also holds several academic positions in various international professional bodies including Scientific Committee Member of the International Hepatopancreatobiliary Association (IHPBA); Scientific Committee Member of Asia Pacific Primary Liver Cancer Expert (APPLE) Association; Councilor, Asian Surgical Association, Council member of Hong Kong Society of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, and Hong Kong Society of Transplantation, as well as Principal Investigator of the State Key Laboratory for Liver Research in the University of Hong KongIn terms of scholarly achievements, Dr Chan was selected by the American College of Surgeons to be the Dr. Abdol and Mrs. Joan Islami International Guest Scholars in year 2018. He was also previously awarded the GB Ong Travelling Fellowship in 2014 for his visit to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in USA, and achieved the Best Research Output in the Department of Surgery for two consecutive years from 2013-14. He has completed 6 book chapters and published over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals including Annals of Surgery, Lancet Oncology and JAMA Surgery, and delivered numerous invited and plenary lectures in various locoregional and international meetings. He was the Associate Editor for Transplantation and is a member of the editorial board for HBSN and World Journal of Surgery.

Dr. Tan To Cheung is Chief of Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital, and Vice President of Hong Kong Society of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, as well as a council member of The Hong Kong Liver Foundation. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor of The University of Hong Kong. Dr. Cheung is a world-renowned leading expert in the field of laparoscopic liver resection for primary liver cancer. He has performed the most laparoscopic liver hepatectomies in Hong Kong with good outcomes and zero mortality. He has published the results of laparoscopic hepatectomies at Queen Mary Hospital in various journals, including in Annals of Surgery twice. He presented his work on laparoscopic liver resection in patients with cirrhosis at the 135th American Surgical Association annual meeting. The papers he published have been highly cited (>200 citations since 2013 and >80 citations since 2016). He completed the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 2018 with the thesis “Application of Minimally Invasive Hepatectomy for Liver Cancer”. Dr. Cheung is very active and outspoken in this field internationally. He is the founding member of International Laparoscopic Liver Surgery Society and was elected as an advisory board member in 2019. Currently he is Vice Chair of Radiology Committee of International Liver Transplant Society. Dr. Cheung is an active researcher with successful grant records. He has been Principle Investigator and Co-investigator of various studies with grants from UGC HK and Mainland China totaling more than 42 million dollars. Dr. Cheung was a recipient of G.B. Ong Visiting Fellowship in Surgery 2013 and James IV Traveling Fellowship 2017. He has coauthored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and other publications, and is frequently invited to lecture internationally and present at plenary sessions. He has mentored a large number of trainees, including postgraduates and overseas academics.

Dr. Jiahong Dong is Professor, Dean of the School of Clinical Medicine, President of Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, Tsinghua University. He is a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as the President of Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA).

Dr. Dong has made remarkable achievements in hepatobiliary surgery, especially in the management of complex biliary diseases. He was the first to propose the concept of “precision surgery” worldwide and has been endeavored in establishing the surgical paradigm and technological system ever since. The proposal of “precision liver surgery” in 2006 ushered a paradigm shift from conventional experience-based surgery to modern precision surgery. Dr. Dong innovatively applied the precision surgery to intrahepatic bile duct diseases and successfully changed the treatment paradigm from symptom alleviation to complete cure. He refined the strategy of liver transplantation using the paradigm of precision surgery and largely improved the treatment of the end-stage hepatobiliary diseases, and also achieved a great success in the extracorporeal liver resection and auto-transplantation, which successfully avoided the allograft transplantation and life-long immunosuppressant therapy. For his outstanding contribution in hepatobiliary surgery, Dong was awarded the 2nd class prize of the National Award of Science and Technology Progress as the first contributor and the 1st class prize of the National Award of Science and Technology Progress as co-director.

Dr. Jiahong Dong’s respected and active roles in the academic community include the standing committee member of the Chinese Medical Association (CMA) Surgery Branch and the Chinese Society of Organ Transplantation, Chief of the CMA Biliary Surgery Branch, Chairman of the Liver Tumor Branch of China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health care (CPAM), and the editor-in-chief of the Chinese Journal of Digestive Surgery. He has been awarded the honorary foreign academician of French National Academy of Surgery (FAS), honorary fellow of American Surgical Association (ASA), honorary fellow of European Surgical Association (ESA), and the Surgical Section Chairman of the International Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists (IASGO).

Tsann-Long Hwang is an attending faculty and surgeon in general surgery in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan, where he is also the director of the Pancreatic Cancer Team, and Chairman of the Committee of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition and Committee of Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering Research. He is also a professor of surgery in the Chang Gung University, College of Medicine, in Taiwan.

Professor Hwang received his medical degree in 1977 from the National Taiwan University, College of Medicine, Taipei, Taiwan. He completed residency training in surgery at the National Taiwan University Hospital and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and completed a research fellowship in the Department of Surgery in Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, from 1985 to 1986. In 1993, he was accepted as FACS. In 1994, he was appointed as professor of surgery in Chang Gung University College of Medicine. From 2000 to 2008, he was dean of the School of Medicine in Chang Gung University, Linkou, Taiwan, and vice President of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. He was also the past President of Taiwan Pancreatic Society from 2006 to 2009, and the past President of Taiwan Surgical Society of Gastroenterology from 2012 to 2014. He is the current President of Taiwan Neuroendocrine tumor Society since 2019.

Professor Hwang was the past President of International College of Surgery, Taiwan section from 2013 to 2015. He was also ever elected as the previous vice President and Governor of World ICS in 2016 and 2017. He participated many affairs of ICS in the past years and hope to promote the international collaborations ICS in the future. Professor Hwang got International Visiting Professorship Award of the Association of Academic Surgery in 2009. He has published more than 350 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has contributed extensively in professional activities in his areas of expertise. He was the chairman of the Pancreatic Cancer Group of the Taiwan Cooperative Oncology Group. He is also the editor of the Journal of Hepato-Biliary Pancreatic Sciences, World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology, Asian Journal of Surgery, and Formosan Journal of Surgery, etc.

Professor Jin-Young Jang graduated from Seoul National University, and he continued his resident and fellowship training in biliary tract and pancreas surgery at Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH). He is currently the professor in the Department of Surgery at Seoul National University College of Medicine. He is one of world famous pancreas and biliary surgeon focusing on evidence based surgery. He has released over 450 SCI(E) scientific papers and is actively working as a member of many clinical guidelines and global studies for pancreas and biliary disease including IPMN, pancreatic cancer and GB cancer. He is an expert surgeon in minimally invasive surgery such as laparoscopic and robotic surgery. His center has performed over 400 robotic assisted PPPD and 1000 advanced robotic biliary-pancreatic surgery.

Educational BackgroundJong Man Kim received his MD from the Korea University in 2000, and trained in the Department of Surgery, Korea University Medical Center until 2005. From 2008 to 2011, he worked as fellow in the Transplantation Division, Department of Surgery, Samsung Medical Center, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine at Seoul, Korea. He studied solid organ transplantation and HCC in those periods.

He completed his PhD (Korea University, 2009), which subject was immunotherapy using 4-1BB antibody against cancer. His carrier has continued in the Department of Surgery, Samsung Medical Center, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine until now (2021) as associate professor.

Professional ExperiencesHe operated laparoscopic liver resection in liver malignancy and living liver donor and has studied for HCC hepatectomy patients, so published many papers. In addition, he has operated living donor liver transplantation. His focusing projects were ABO-incompatibility, HCC, and immunosuppression in liver transplantation. He published approximately 310 articles related liver transplantation and/or HCC in the Journal of Hepatology, Hepatology, Annals of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery, Liver Transplantation, and Transplantation.

Dr. Ki-Hun Kim is currently a professor of division of Hepatobiliary surgery and Liver transplantation and Director of Asan Liver Center at Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea. He graduated from Korea University College of Medicine in 1992 where he earned PhD degree in 2003 and completed a surgical resident training in Korea University hospital in 1998. He completed a fellowship training of Hepatobiliary surgery and Liver transplantation at Asan Medical Center in 2000. He was an instructor of Surgery at Seoul Baik Hospital, University of Inje, Korea in 2001, a visiting professor of Surgery at Kobe University Hospital, Kobe, Japan in 2006, and participated in the Multivisceral Transplantation Program as a visiting professor at Miami Transplant Institute, University of Miami, USA in 2007. He has been a faculty member of Surgery at Asan Medical Center since 2002. He is currently a council member of APHPBA, ISLS, and ILLS. He was a secretary general in the international meeting for HCC 2008, IHPBA 2014, ELSA 2015, ELSA visionary summit 2017, and ISLS 2018. He is a member of ILTS, ILLS, IHPBA, APHPBA, IASGO, ELSA, EAES, KMS, KAHPBS, KSOT, KASL, KSELS, and KLTSG. He performed the first successful pure laparoscopic living donor hepatectomy in 2008, Asia-Pacific region and multivisceral transplantation with a pediatric surgeon in 2011, Korea. Dr. Kim has more than 3,000 open hepatectomies and more than 1,000 laparoscopic hepatectomies including living donor hepatectomies and was the operator at live demonstration of open and laparoscopic liver resection in the international meeting for HCC 2008, IASGO 2009, 2011, 2015, ILDLT 2015, ILTS 2016, ELSA visionary summit 2017, ISLS 2017, ISLS 2018, ISLS 2019, and HBP surgery week 2021. He performed LDLT with his colleagues in France 2004, Turkey 2006, and India 2008, and open hepatectomy in USA 2007, and laparoscopic hepatectomy in India 2011, Russia 2014, Singapore 2015, Qatar 2017, and Bulgaria 2019. Especially, He enjoyed riding a motorbike, Harley-Davidson, but stops for family peace now. He published more than 300 scientific articles.

From the start of his surgical career he was very involved in the field of organ transplantation and HBP surgery. This interest resulted in a two years hepatobiliary and transplantation NATO-fellowship at the University Paris-Sud Centre Hépatobiliaire under the lead of Prof. BISMUTH and at the University Pittsburgh Medical Centre under the lead of Prof. STARZL. He was director of the abdominal transplant program at the Inselspital University Bern (CH) from 1987 to 1991 (under the lead of Prof.BLUMGART). From 1991 to 2016 he was Director of the Starzl Abdominal Transplant Unit, University Hospitals Saint Luc and Director of the UCL Transplant Center in Brussels.His surgical and professional career is particular because having taken place in 7 different linguistic and cultural environments (Dutch, French, German, English, Italian, Polish and Chinese speaking countries), a condition which allowed him to have a good insight in the evolution and perception of surgery worldwide.He worked actively at bringing together Eastern Western liver transplantation (LT) worlds. Many invited lectures and study visits in China, Hong Kong, Japan, South-Korea and Taiwan led to scientifically very successful collaborative East-West and European Hepatocellular cancer- Liver transplantation (EURHeCaLT) efforts.He has served as president of the Belgian Society of Transplantation (BST), the Royal Belgian Society of Surgery (RBSS), the Eurotransplant Liver Allocation Committee (ET-ELIAC), the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT),the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS). He is vice-chair of the UEMS European Board of Transplantation Surgery (EBTS) and member of the Belgian Superior Health Council.He has published 370 peer-reviewed articles (H-index 53), he authored 28 books chapters and 24 scientific films. He organized 51 surgical and transplantation meetings. He made 760 communications on national and international congresses, merely devoted to liver surgery and transplantation. He received the ILTS and ELITA distinguished service awards as well as the TTS “Best investigator driven study” and “Mentorship, Education and Training in Transplantation” awards. He is member the French Academy of Surgery.He has been visiting professor at many renowned institutions such as Mayo Clinic Foundation, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, the medical faculties of Tokyo University, Universidade da Sao Paolo, La Cattolica University Santiago de Chili, La Calle University, Cali, Warsaw Medical University and of the Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Working in the front line of the clinical and scientific research for 36years, up to now, more than 5000 cases of robotic HPB surgery had been performed by his team, ranking the first in terms of the total number in the world. Prof. Liu established the integrated hepato-pancreato-biliary minimally invasive surgical system, and realized the evolution of surgery from giant invasive to minimally invasive, from regional minimally invasive to whole-length minimally invasive. By the introduction of cybernetics and artificial intelligence and other theories and technologies, Prof. Liu established “Intelligent Medicine”. He also led the development of five domestic and international guidelines and expert consensus. Prof. Liu held 21 consecutive sessions of “Beijing International Minimally Invasive Surgery Forum” and 3 consecutive sessions of “Chinese Medical Intelligent Equipment and Technology Conference”, which attracted experts from various developed countries and regions to visit and learn. Prof. Liu has made great contributions to the advancement of discipline, technology promotion and intelligent development of HPB surgery.

As an oncological surgeon-scientist, I was trained in Cancer Biology for studying pancreatic cancer and translational medicine. Based on more than 15 years of clinical experience in treating HBP cancer patients, now I am developing molecular diagnostics which is clinically usable to identify distinct prognostic and predictive subgroups to particular treatment within the identical clinical stage. The overarching goal of my research is to identify potential diagnostic and therapeutic targets and to develop clinical relevant prognostic or predictive markers as well as valid targets for novel therapeutics. To this end, I have been collaborating with a number of researchers in diverse discipline: cell biology, molecular biology, pathology and engineering etc. This trans-disciplinary approach utilizes patient-derived resources to accurately model human cancer molecular pathophysiology to bridge the preclinical and the clinic. To clinical tumor repository, we have established Patient-Derived tumor xenograft (PDX) and Organic models. Based on these platforms, I orchestrate novel cancer therapeutics development specially for therapy refractory pancreatic cancers.

Dr. Reber is Distinguished Professor of Surgery Emeritus and Emeritus Chief of the Gastrointestinal and Pancreatic Surgery section at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received his undergraduate medical education at Temple University, went to Medical School at the University of Pennsylvania, and remained at the same institution for his surgical training, which he completed in 1970. During that time he was selected nationally by the NIH for a 4-year basic science and clinical program to train academic physicians. This began a stellar academic career that has culminated in his current national and international reputation as a multifaceted academic pancreatic surgeon. To date, his principal research accomplishments all involve basic and translational studies in pancreatic physiology and disease. He was the first to apply micropuncture methodology to the study of pancreatic electrolyte secretion. He developed a model for the study of pancreatic duct permeability and defined the role of the main duct in acute pancreatitis. More recently, he demonstrated that chronic pancreatitis is associated with a severe reduction of blood flow to the pancreas, which is a major cause of the pain that afflicts these patients.

In 1995, he established the Ronald S. Hirshberg Pancreatic Cancer Research Laboratory at UCLA. This laboratory pursues basic and translational pancreatic cancer research, and has focused on the creation of an animal model of pancreatic cancer for investigating the mechanisms of inflammatory process, angiogenesis, and cell signaling. His laboratory has become a key resource for training young investigators and pioneering research work on the effect of polyphenols and omega-3 fatty acids in pancreatic proliferative and inflammatory processes. In 2006, under his leadership, he founded and until recently was the Director of the UCLA Center for Pancreatic Diseases, a key multidisciplinary clinical center for coordinated management of patients with pancreatic diseases and which serves as a resource for translational research and clinical trials. He currently serves as Emeritus Director of the UCLA Agi Hirshberg Center for Pancreatic Diseases.

Dr. Reber has had an important international leadership role in surgery. He is a member of all the major learned surgical societies. He has served as the President and, for nearly 20 years, Secretary-Treasurer of the American Pancreatic Association. He was Vice President of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract and was a member of its Board of Trustees.

Dr. Reber has established a world renowned surgical practice focused on pancreatic diseases and has accumulated a vast experience with the entire breadth and depth of the discipline. Clearly recognized as one of the top five pancreatic surgeons in the world, he has lectured throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. He is the author of more than 250 scientific manuscripts and 100 book chapters and the editor of 8 books. He serves on the editorial board of 6 medical journals. He was awarded the Vay W. Liang and Frisca Go Award for Lifetime Achievement by the American Pancreatic Association in 2007. In 2012 he was the designated honoree for lifetime achievement as a pancreatic surgeon and scientist by the Pancreas Club.

Brief Description Dr. Shin-E Wang was graduated from National Yang Ming University in 2002, and completed her surgical residency at Taipei Veterans General Hospital from 2002 to 2007. Her major interests include minimal invasive surgery including robotic and laparoscopic surgery, pancreas surgery and pancreas transplant. Her team is very actively involved in minimal invasive surgery, especially robotic Whipple operation (more than 385 RPD cases) and pancreas transplant (more than 165 cases). She was the experts committee member in International Evidence-Based Guidelines for Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Resection, held at Miami.

BRIEF DESCRIPTIONDr. Yoo-Seok Yoon graduated from the Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1997. After that, he completed his surgical residency and fellowship training at the Seoul National University Hospital from 1998 to 2004. He is currently working as a professor in the department of surgery, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. His primary clinical interests include pancreatobiliary surgery, with a special interest in laparoscopic surgery including pancreatoduodenectomy, distal pancreatectomy, and various kinds of biliary surgery. His team is actively performing the laparoscopic HBP surgery and is known as one of leading groups in this field. He published approximately 200 articles related to HBP surgery in highly ranked international medical journals.
