MOOTZMy orders are to return you where you’re from.

FRENCH WOMANThe Nazi SS kidnapped us from our homes in France. I am about to break water.

MOOTZUh-oh! Ladies, have a rear seat in my jeep vehicle; let’s find a midwife.

MCNULTY and DOCTOR ADOLF BLAUBLÖT approach RUSHER, as MILITARY POLICE, INFANTRY RIFLEMEN and ANTI-TANK UNITS deploy.

MCNULTYMajor, the chief honcho here turned off electric power that runs all the lights and elevators.

DOCTOR ADOLF BLAUBLÖTHerr Major, I am Doctor Adolf Blaublöt, chief executive officer of the Merkers Graphite Mine Corporation. I shut down my power to prevent sabotage.

RUSHERAdolf, your near future looks negative.

COMBAT ENGINEER(sledgehammers lock)

There's no use to whacking and re-whacking this un-whackable steel. Half-a-stick of dynamite on the wall would blow a crawl-through hole.

Fire in the hole!

.5

BLAUBLÖT (CONT'D)

A modest explosion blows a crawl-through hole in wall.

INT. - SPACIOUS CAVERN

Many hundreds of gold-filled canvas sacks are aligned in rows along ground on stage left of track, 15 sacks wide, 10 deep and two or three sacks high. Hundreds of crates, trunks and suitcases are stacked in far corner on opposite side of track.

MAJOR GENERAL MANTON EDDY(arrives; astounded)

What in tarnation did we stumble onto?

RUSHERGeneral Eddy, it looks like trillions of dollars in gold and silver bricks, rare coins, cash of various countries, stacks of suitcases and trunks filled with gemstones and jewelry, enough artworks to fill several large museums; and we found two emaciated, Austrian Jews, jewelers by trade, prisoners of the Nazis since nineteen thirty-nine.

EDDYHoly Mary mother of God! News hounds are swarming topside, hungry for confirmation of Nazi loot. We’ll feed them the gold; everything else is top secret.

RUSHERSir, may I suggest a press release? "GENERAL PATTON CAPTURES THIRD REICH GOLD HOARD."

EDDYThat'll do her! Major Rusher, have the Jews delivered to our medics.

YOUTH ODILO GLOBOCNIK(Cuddles up to ANNA)

Momma, I was playing by myself. Four Italian kikes took my football, so I kicked the shit out of them.

ANNA(Affectionately)

My foul-mouthed warrior! Scrub yourself and change clothes for dinner.

Youth Odilo Globocnik disappears into small bed room.

FRANZThe boy needs strict discipline.

.7

EDDY (CONT'D)

FRANZ Anna, we received an emergency announcement. Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand was murdered in Serbia.

ANNA Too bad for the aristocracy!

FRANZ The Imperial Postal Service ordered our withdrawal from Trieste without delay. I have been transferred to Klagenfurt in Carinthia.

OTTO BÜCHNER, wearing military school uniform, anxiously seeks Teenaged Odilo Globocnik, who stands apart from scores of similarly uniformed, LOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS, visibly in a state of shock, bewilderment and despair.

.9

OTTO BUCHNER(pushes through crowd)

Odilo! A Socialist government took power in Vienna. They asked America for an armistice.

TEENAGED ODILO GLOBOCNIKOw! Otto, if Austria-Hungary is finished, Germany will surrender any minute.

BÜCHNERIf the Saint Polten Academy goes out of business, I don't know what my parents will do with me.

TEENAGED ODILO GLOBOCNIKI am done for here anyhow. My father’s military death benefit ran out. I have no more tuition money.

ANNAThree long years ago, pieces of your father bounced home from the Great War on a freight train. We will soon bounce into the poorhouse!

TEENAGED ODILO GLOBOCNIKMomma, instead of my learning how to kill and destroy in a military academy, I want to work in the construction field.

ANNAThe Saint Polten school gave you high grades in every subject: Religion, German Language, History, all very good.

.10

The academy says You are talented, cheerful, willing; all glowing reports!

Much PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC comes and goes as Carinthian Home Defense Force captain HUBERT KLAUSNER, protected by a dozen meagerly armed UNIFORMED FIGHTERS, rants to a moderate audience of curious LISTENERS.

HUBERT KLAUSNERFellow Carinthians, join the Home Defense Force. Our mission— our obligation— is to expel the evils of Communism from our precious land.

Klausner’s ranting continues in background, as Teenaged Odilo Globocnik delivers several pieces of luggage from inside bahnhof to waiting taxicab, receives gratuity from ARRIVING PASSENGER, and is drawn towards demonstration.

Teenaged Odilo Globocnik notices uniformed Otto Buchner among Carinthian Fighters; approaches HIM.

TEENAGED ODILO GLOBOCNIKBuchner!

BUCHNERGlobocnik! Comrade, how goes it?

GLOBOCNIKNot too bad. Otto, I need to join the Carinthian defense army and kill Slovene-Jew communists.

BUCHNERWe are too young to go into battle. But, they give military training and assignments to do useful things.

.11

ANNA (CONT'D)

TEENAGED ODILO GLOBOCNIKI'll lie and say I am two years older than you, and my birth certificate got lost. Back me up.

BÜCHNERI tried to lie about my age. Our leader, Captain Klausner, saw right through me.

EXT. MUNICH - FEBRUARY 24, 1920 - TUESDAY EVENING

Buchner and Teenaged Odilo Globocnik, BOTH in Carinthian Home Defense Force uniform, roam wide-eyed through city ringed by encampments of free corps military units and impoverished ex-soldiers. Most obvious are mass uncleanliness and the absence of light. A poorly-attired general populace and signs of unrest are evident amid minimal small-scale reconstruction projects.

BUCHNEROdilo, Munich is a filthy city. All I see are encampments of defeated soldiers, wearing different, dirty uniforms.

BOTH pause to peruse a printed poster in bright red letters, among many posted on nearby walls.

TUESDAY, 22 FEBRUARY, 1921, 9:00 P.M HOFBRäUHAUS BANQUET HALL; ADOLF HITLER WILL PRESENT 25-POINT POLITICAL PROGRAM OF THE GERMAN WORKERS PARTY.

ADOLF HITLER stands at podium on platform.

HEINRICH HIMMLER(to YOUNG GLOBOCNIK)

YOUNG GLOBOCNIKIt was a privilege, sir.

YOUNG GLOBOCNIKThe Carinthian Home Defense militia.

HIMMLERSo, you are Austrian.

YOUNG GLOBOCNIKNo, sir. My four grandparents were Aryan.

.13

HIMMLERYou share that same distinction with Herr Hitler. Your parents can be proud of you.

YOUNG GLOBOCNIKI wish! My father was a cavalry officer in the Great War, killed by Italian artillery while leading a heroic charge.

HIMMLERFascinating! What is your name?

GLOBOCNIKMein Herr, I am Odilo LotharLudovicus Globocnik.

HIMMLERI am Heinrich Himmler. Join me for food and beverages.

YOUNG GLOBOCNIKI would be glad to, but my mother is a worrier. I am ordered to catch the last train home to Klagenfurt, or else.

A 24-man contingent of uniformed, helmeted, HITLER SA TROOPS armed with automatic pistols stream into beer hall as bewildered MUNICH MUNICIPAL POLICE observe and do nothing.

HITLER (CONT’D)(shouts)

With fire in HIS eyes, HE scrambles across table tops to speaker’s platform.

HITLER (CONT'D)(commands von Lossow, Von Seisser and vin Khar)

AUSTRIAN SA SERGEANTYes, Captain!

HITLER(rises)

No, General von Ludendorff, I spared you the burden of withholding my plans from your staff. Accompany me to persuade the triumvirate to issue my army adequate weapons.

LUDENDORFFI gave Kahr permission to issue routine orders from his office. Lossow and Seisser felt duty-bound to go with their superior.

HITLER(astounded)

You aided and abetted their escape!

LUDENDORFFI had each of them, individually, swear their allegiance to you.

HITLER(incredulous)

They will destroy me!

LUDENDORFFA German officer does not break his sworn oath.

Excitement and exaltation subside throughout smoke-filled hall filled with 2,000 depressed HITLER PUTSCHISTS nibbling bread and cheese, sipping coffee, snoozing, grumbling as Messenger hastens to Hitler.

HITLER(shrieks)

I knew it!

LUDENDORFFI believed the sky would fall before the Bavarian army would ever turn against me.

GÖRINGMy Führer, at Rosenheim where I was born, on our border with Austria, we would find popular support to wage guerrilla warfare.

.21

LUDENDORFF(asserts)

The movement cannot end in a ditch on some obscure country lane. We must gather our forces and charge into battle.

HITLER(decides)

We will march to the heart of Munich and win the population to our side. Watch the triumvirate's reaction to popular opinion.

KURTMishoogenah! A monster came in before, I should custom-make him a swastika lapel pin. I politely declined. He introduced himself as Odilo Globocnik, and warned me: I made a deadly enemy.

MARTINGlobocnik leads the Vienna Nazi party.

KURTLet them all rot in hell! Martin, in an emergency, you'll find in my upstairs wall safe two, twenty-five calibre Frantisek Dusek pistols with six bullets in each magazine. It's called a Hitler gun, because he wouldn't be caught dead without one. Don't laugh! I'll teach you to shoot and how to clean them. In the meantime, bathe yourself and dress formally. We have a dinner appointment with my accountant and his zoftig wife.

MARTINI prefer to stay home and reconstruct my school notes.

KURTMy son the intellectual! More sophistication is gained in cafes than in college.

.32

WEBER(parks truck)

This used to be Lublin airport. That pack of a few thousand Jew prisoners are waiting for paid jobs on good be behavior in those three hangars.

MARTINWhat sort of work and pay do they get?

WEBBERThat is none of our business. All I know is, we let them socialize here and they stay out of trouble.

MARTINThere are so more women than men.

WEBERFewer Jew men stay alive. Zaine, I am glad to see how good you drive the truck.

MARTINMaster Sergeant Becker, today, on my collection run, my bodyguard. Corporal Webber, was sick and asked me to do the run myself. I felt terrified. I need a small handgun-- not so much to kill anyone, but to defend myself against a thief-- preferably a Frantisek Dusiek with several magazines and sufficient twenty-five caliber bullets.

BECKER(enjoys a bellylaugh)

You want a Führer gun. He would not be caught dead without one. Zaine, I have one with a fine leather holster to hide on your body. Pick it up when you deliver my Rolex.

GLOBOCNIK(paws her body during following)

Of course!

IRMAWhen will that be?

GLOBOCNIKWhen your racial background application is approved.

IRMAYou submitted it eighteen months ago.

GLOBOCNIKIrma, when the Reichsführer'sadvance bomb detection squad gets here, movement in and out of the mansion is strictly forbidden-- even my own. Go shopping now, and buy what you want.

INT. - GLOBOCNIK'S SMALL OFFICE

Himmler studies wall maps, as Globocnik proudly stands by.

HIMMLERGlobus, your maps are outdated.

GLOBOCNIKReichsführer, it is impossible to keep up with the Führer's expansion of the Reich.

HIMMLEROur primary concern must be the annihilation of every communist, Gypsy and Jew in the east.

GLOBOCNIKReichsführer, I am committed to the task.

HIMMLERAbove all, liquidate the Jews.

A soft knocking on office door.

GLOBOCNIKReichsführer, with your permission?

HIMMLERI prefer to not be disturbed.

Globocnik opens office door; Irma steps in, wearing horseback riding attire.

IRMABrigade-Leader, may I ask what time to have dinner served?

HIMMLER(indirectly; coldly)

Fraulein.

(to Globocnik)Globus, my schedule excludes dining with you. I would enjoy a fresh carrot.

GLOBOCNIKFraulein Heimlich, a fresh carrot for the Reichsführer-SS at once.

IRMAYes, Brigade-leader.

(she quickly departs)

GLOBOCNIK(shuts door)

Reichsführer, may I raise the matter of my fiancée's racial background application?

HIMMLERHer mother’s fourth generation ancestry includes the name, Rebecca; suspiciously Jewish! Your aide, Captain Lerch, introduced the girl to you, during your New Year’s Eve celebration.

GLOBOCNIKTrue, Reichsführer.

HIMMLERThat same night, she entertained an SS-cavalry sub-lieutenant for five hours in her Winjawski Street six residence.

GLOBOCNIKNo!

HIMMLERYes! That very morning, I had him transferred to the Eastern front where he quickly died in glory. Globus, send the tramp packing and focus on our task. You will construct and administrate a camp outside the town of Belzec with suitable living quarters for five hundred SS personnel; minimal barracks for one thousand work Jews; and a facility to exterminate five thousand Jews per day. Facilitate the same at Sobibor and Treblinka.

.73

HIMMLER (CONT'D)

Reichsführer, a snack especially for you.

HIMMLER(scolds)

I wished to enjoy a carrot, not some shredded substance.

GLOBOCNIK(coldly)

Fraulein Heimlich, get rid of that shredded substance. Pack your belongings at once. I will notify you of your transportation schedule to Berlin.

IRMABut--

GLOBOCNIKNo ifs, ands, or buts! You deceived me with an SS-cavalry officer. You are no longer welcome here.

GLOBOCNIKForgive my tab before I box your ears and make your eyeballs pop. I permit you to wed your Jewess flute player, Saturday afternoon.

ZIMAGroup-Leader, we are not engaged to marry.

On either side of them are best man, Winklermann in tuxedo and white yarmulke, and MAID OF HONOR in pink gown and raised veil.

RABBI(proclaims)

On the seventh day of the week, the fourth day of the month Tishri, in the year five thousand seven hundred and four since the creation of the world, in the city of Lublin, Poland, Zalek son of Mordicai said to this maiden Lila daughter of Jakow, "Be my wife according to the laws of Moses and Israel." And the maiden Lila consented and became his wife. According to the institutions of our sages of blessed memory all is valid and binding.

Zima places wine glass on floor, smashes it.

SS POLICE OFFICERS(ALL rise, glass in hand; toast)

Mazeltov!

I stood proudly and said: "My Führer, I wish we could place bronze plaques, to tell the world that we had the courage to get rid of two million Jew-parasites." He applauded me. Now, I need to walk home by myself, and think of a way to hang up my hat and retire.

MARTIN(his hands quivering, puts weapon on safety, pockets it; nears GLOBOCNIK)

Group Leader, I am Israel Zaine, your loot-Jew general.

MARTINThat is a unique way of remembering me. Where are you going?

KATERINETo my home away from home.

MARTINPermit me to drive you there.

KATERINEThank you, no, I live close by.

MARTINWhat brought you to Gestapo Headquarters?

KATERINEMy mother‘s important military contacts gained me employment there. Why are you wearing an odd uniform and driving an SS truck?

MARTINI could explain if you join me for dinner. There must be so much to learn about one another.

KATERINEPossibly. I am under observation every moment. They watch me sleep and do my toilet.

MARTINI am transferring to Trieste tomorrow.

KATERINEMartin, are you? The best of luck.

GLOBOCNIKReichsführer, please, you were away from Lublin on my departure. I replaced forty smaller trunks with twenty much larger ones. Sixty percent is yours, eight trunks are mine. I only await your instructions.

RUSHERSirs, what's to be done with Jewish civilians who slaved in this mine for the SS?

BRADLEYGeorge, back in the old free- booting days, a soldier kept his loot. What would you do with it all?

PATTONWell, General Bradley, a generous part of me would fashion the gold into LUCKY medallions-- one for every sonofabitch in Third Army. My practical side wants to hide it until peacetime, when Congress cracks down on military appropriations. Then, Army can reach into our treasure chest for money to buy new weaponry.

Years of deliberate neglect weigh heavily on Jewish section of cemetery, where Martin appears at LOTTA ZAINE's grave. Cleanly dressed, but soiled, wearing a cool weather cap, he holds a spade in HIS hands and appears burdened.

MARTINMother, I salvaged wealth from father's salon and upstairs wall safe. Most of it is buried beside you. I held a leadership position in Poland and Italy. In the name of self-survival, I gave myself excuses to overlook brutality and cruelty. My guilty conscience challenges me to dedicate my life in search of God. In respect for millions of Nazi victims, I pray:

(adjusts cap, prays aloud)Yiskadal v'yiskadash sh'may ra bo b'ol-mo dee-v'ro. . . . .
