Preface

Rapid population growth and continued economic developmenthave caused serious environmental damage in the Asia Pacificregion. However, the recent experience is that the pace ofenvironmental degradation is faster in developing countries thanin developed countries. These countries have faced manychallenges in recent decades, including low levels of education,poor health standards, poverty, scarce housing, natural resourcedepletion, terrorism, and economic and political domination byother countries. To this end, the study seeks to assess the impactof population pressure on India’s environment, with particularreference to the degradation of natural endowments like land andwater resources and the resultant environmental pollution.

However, this volume is an outcome of intense academicdiscussion and debate held on the topic Population, economicgrowth and its inter-linkages to Environmental pollution issuesespecially in context of India and its sub continental realm. Thecontributors have made an effort to understand the differentgeographical phenomenon related to development and its linkagesto environmental pollution at micro level in form of case studieswidely across the India. These case studies will also be helpful tounderstand the same phenomenon in another regions but havingsimilar geographical setups. This volume contains fourteen papersdivided into six sections and that exploring the relationship amongthe three mentioned dimensions, i.e. population, economic growthand environmental pollution. First section presents a theoreticalframework and the basic understanding of population setting inIndia specific under ageing population, development andenvironment in Indian contexts; second section revolves roundPopulation Pressure and its impact of environmental changes;
