1. REPORTS 1.1 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Fellow Members, In my second year as President I should have known the dream ending to 2017 (with our
Premiership) wouldn’t last forever. As always, our aim at Port Melbourne Football Club is to be the best and most successful football club in the Victorian Football League. The 2017 Premiership was clearly testimony to that and despite some hiccups in 2018, on the field we still performed admirably, the men losing to the eventual Premiers in the Elimination Final in extra time, and the inaugural women’s team ending the season with a significant number of victories. This reflects the pride and passion of the players, coaches, football and administration departments and of course, our members and sponsors.
Our on-field success was to an extent stifled by the playing surface issues encountered, which saw us lose 3 home games at the start of the season which was not only a disruption to the football teams, but of course, to our revenue (including game day income and membership sales). The Board continues to place a great emphasis on financial stability and to improving the player, member and sponsor experience.
Following long and often feisty discussions with the Port Phillip City Council, it was very pleasing that they confirmed redevelopment of the North Port playing surface (at a cost of some $1.95 million) which has commenced. I’m pleased to say that our lobbying has also brought about further potential capital improvements to the ground including new lights of broadcast quality, new changing rooms for women, potentially a player gymnasium, and the list goes on (at an estimated cost in excess of $3 million to occur in 2019/20). That is, we will be seeing over $5 million of improvements to our ground in the next 2 years which will benefit the Club, the teams, members, sponsors and the community. I sincerely thank Mayor Bernadene Voss and the Council, the Honourable Mr Martin Foley and Mr Josh Burns for their remarkable commitment to our cause which will make our ground a showpiece for years to come.
Club Achievements As a Club our achievements in 2018 included:
The strong performances of both our men’s and women’s teams. With some excellent recruiting since the end of the playing seasons, 2019 offers much promise We continued to invest in football with spending on players, coaching and support staff. Acceleration Melbourne and Dr Rob Nicholson supervised and provided fitness services to our men’s and women’s teams respectively. The outcome was apparent Sponsorship value, taking into account cash and in-kind exceeded last year’s record levels and almost reached $300,000 excluding in-kind sponsorships, with a value of a further $60,000. We thank all sponsors including our Platinum Sponsors Fortburn Pty Ltd, Mischel and Co Accountants and Advisors, Beck Property Group, Stannards Accountants and Advisors, Pro Build, Hutchinson Builders, Beastwear and South Pacific Health Clubs. I also personally thank Mr Steve Long for his great support of our Club We maintained membership at over 1200 members North Port Reserve (Stannards Stadium) remains the ground of choice for finals football for the VFL and VFL broadcaster Channel 7. We put on a great show for the finals and have confirmed ongoing support of the broadcaster for 2019

of increasing revenue/reducing operating costs and we thank them for their ongoing efforts and support.
The Social and Administration building has provided solid revenue this year and we have
employed an Events Manager, Ms Nicole Bates to assist. To date, the efforts of Nicole and her team have been excellent and we look forward to growing this source of income by 50% in 2019.
Under the tenancy agreement with Council for the Events Centre we are required to provide
for community use and we have exceeded the minimum requirement in 2018. Overall, our surplus in 2018 is $31,913 (2017 - $56,501). We are satisfied with this result, given
various issues such as the ground condition impacting revenue. We are seeking to double our surplus in 2019.
Fishermans Bend Taskforce We have met with and discussed the plans of the Taskforce in conjunction with the
redevelopment of our facility. This is ongoing and we shall report to you as and when significant events occur.
Recognition What is very apparent, as always, is that our Club cannot survive without the continuing support
of many people. In no particular order, I thank: Our players; The Football Department, including Senior Coaches Gary Ayres and Andrew Calleja and Development Coach Trent McMicking and all of their assistants; Our fitness, training, medical teams and support staff; The Team Managers and assistants and match day runners who support our coaches and players; Joan Round, Maragaret Addicoat and Di Perazzo who work tirelessly in the kiosk at every game played at North Port Oval. They are very much part of our heart and soul; The merchandise group, including Jenny Tserkezidis and Brad Mullen who open the merchandise booth at every home game and keep us in the red and the blue; The Past Players and Officials Association and its committee lead by Graeme Clark and Gary Brice and the work they do to support our Club and the players. The Association continues to grow in number, which reflects the contribution they make to the Club and the community; Our sponsors and other strategic partners; The match day support staff of time keepers, scorers, gate keepers, time clock operators, statisticians, cooks, waiters, master of ceremonies, ground announcers, bar staff and support people; Our Club patron Martin Foley MP, as well as Mr Michael Danby MP, Mr Josh Burns and Mayor Bernadene Voss for their continuing support and as needs be, advice; Our Number 1 Ticket Holder, Bruce Mathieson and his company ALH for their support; Anthony Traill and the Recreating Unit from Port Phillip City Council for their support and advocacy of the Club during 2018; AFL Victoria, including Mr John Hook and Mr Ricky Bell for their contributions to our Club; and
We continued to assist in various community programs throughout the Port Phillip region, an area we shall continue to expand. This year we assisted with such causes as MS, the Alannah and Madeleine Foundation, Port Phillip Special School as well as undertaking a large school visitation program.
Longevity is a key measure of success and we can be very proud of the fact that our Club has
just completed its 143rd year and is the number one stand-alone team in the competition. Finances Our three operating divisions are shown in the following table:
Revenue Revenue from match day takings held up well this year (albeit the impact of losing 3 home
games was some $40,000). The contribution from the kiosk operated by our Ladies Committee played a significant part, as did the sale of merchandise.
Sponsorship has continued to grow and membership revenue was solid. Having said this, both
sources of income need to grow again next year to ensure we remain financially viable (target growth is 25%).
The Rex offers a strong revenue stream, albeit such revenue has fallen in recent years reflecting
the turbulent and complex gaming environment, and consumer preferences to online gaming. ALH, the operators of The Rex are continually reviewing operations with our Club with a view

1.2 SENIOR COACH 2018 was not without its challenges, with the loss of experience after the 2017 Flag including
Brody Mihocek being drafted – and wasn’t it great to see Brodie have such a fine debut season? Recruiting was difficult and once again we had ground issues but now that has been addressed I am sure we are looking forward to a brand new surface/surrounds at Stannards Stadium for season 2019.
We played inconsistently in quarters in games, evidenced by the fact that we only won 3 games
in a row once in 2018, otherwise it was win one or two games, then drop one or two games. Perhaps it can be explained partially by the fact that we played 11 debutants in 2018, our average age was 22, some important players played very little football because of injury and we played 43 out of a possible 45 of our list.
We won enough games to participate in the 2018 finals; our 10th finals series out of the last 11
years, which is incredible when you think of it. The Elimination Final was another classic played out against Box Hill. I was so proud of how we played, 6 players in their first ever VFL final while Box Hill had 17 Hawthorn players, and we went into extra time.
Box Hill would go on and win the 2018 Premiership. Sometimes you can think you are a long
way off, but in reality you are not. I would like to think that the Elimination Final loss burns deep in all of us and can use it as
motivation for another tilt at success – remember the 2010 Semi Final loss and what that prompted from the playing ground in 2011!
We will be better in 2019, because of the exposure that our younger players had in 2018. There
will be more coaching resources – what’s not to love about the coaching group we have assembled in Premiership players Robin Nahas, Shane Valenti and Sam Dwyer? They are all great Port people and we will be complemented by Head of Development in Trent McMicking with Peter Keenan helping out our young ruckmen.
Another great appointment for our women’s team is ex-Port Captain Harold Hetherton. He has
already got our women in full swing to build on their first ever year at Port. At the time of writing, we have been very aggressive in recruiting and have secured 6 new
players in Tom Goodwin, Pat Veszpremi, Perry Lewis Smith, Harry Pearce, Ben Giobbi and Geordie Nagle, who will blend into our ruck division, midfield, forward and defence.
To all of our Sponsors, Members, to the Board, support staff, Sam Wharton and supporters, a
big thank you. A special mention to Glenn Robertson and Anthony Piccolo for their dedication,
professionalism, work ethic and support to me in their time at Port. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and safe New Year. Gary Ayres Senor Coach
Mr Sam Wharton, Mr Anthony Piccolo and Mr Glenn Robertson who certainly made administration of a very complex Club quite seamless this year.
I would like to also thank all Board colleagues for their efforts this year, which have effectively
allowed us to continue to achieve our strategic objectives. Your Board has a broad range of skills and knowledge that they bring to the management of
your Club. Whilst everyone may not agree with some Board strategies, I would like to think we are all operating for one reason and one reason only; that is, to maintain and grow our Club for all of you.
Tributes I extend my condolences to all members and their families who have lost love ones (Port
Melbourne players, members, associates). Having lost my mother in February this year, following the deaths of my father and my wife in 2015, I understand just how difficult it can be and hope we, as a Club can continue to offer you support in your time of need.
I look forward to the commencement of the 2019 season and seeing our teams being power
houses in the competition. There is much to do in this regard, and rest assured, this is probably the busiest time of the year for the Board and the Football Department.
Thank you everyone for your support. It has again been an honour to serve the Club and I look
forward to what we can all collectively achieve in the coming months/years. The redevelopment of the oval, the recent appointment of Harold Hetherton and the re-appointment of Gary Ayres are very good reasons to get excited.

1.4 PORT MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB PAST PLAYERS & OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION
Once again it is with great pleasure to present this report at the 2018 AGM of the mighty Port
Melbourne Football Club. Our 2018 Committee of Past Players and Officials have completed another very active season. The Committee met regularly during the year and arranged various functions to encourage former players and officials to reconnect with the Club.
It has always been our intention to raise much needed funds for the Club. We were able to
offer our members the opportunity of special membership categories: $20 standard membership (19 members); $40 season ticket membership (34 members); $200 membership, which included all previous benefits plus a ticket to the annual luncheon (44 members). The support we received for the $200 membership was fantastic. We want to increase the numbers in all categories next year. Our total membership for 2018 was 97.
During or regular meetings in 2018 we discussed and planned a number of activities for the
year. The Committee aim to provide 2/3 functions per year for members and encourage them to attend Club matches as well. The Committee understands that we all have other commitment and may not be able to attend every match, however by providing the opportunity to attend any or all of the functions, we believe that it can only promote, strengthen and enhance the great history and tradition of our Club.
We started the year off with our Annual Golf Day which was held at the end of February at
Patterson River Golf Club with 24 players. As usual, a great day was had by all. The social function was followed by our Annual Bowls Day at the Port Melbourne Bowling Club in March with approximately 30 in attendance. The addition of lawn bowls to our social calendar has proven to be a successful day and our thanks go to the Port Melbourne Bowls Club for allowing us to enjoy this special day. Thanks to Jim Christou for this concept. We are coming back in 2019.
A special day during the season was the second ‘Frank Johnson Round 11 Tribute’ game to our
Club Legend and Team of the Century Captain. It was a great occasion to honour a Champion of our Club. It was extra special to have the VFL support for this game, even though we were forced to move the game away from our ground because of its condition. It was rescheduled for our home game against Williamstown. Maybe the VFL will allow the Port v Willy game to be Round 11 each year. The Frank Johnson Medal for our best player was awarded to Mack Rivett. It was presented in the presence of the Johnson family.
During the season we aim to support the Club in a number of ways. One major area of financial
support was the Club’s 2018 Best & Fairest winners. At the Club’s Presentation Night we presented awards for $500 for first, $300 for second and $200 for third, a total of $1000. In addition, we supported the players’ end of season function with a donation of $1000.
Our Annual Luncheon was held on Friday 1st September. Our special guest speakers this year
were AFL Legend, Hawthorn’s Robert Dipierdomenico and comedian Des Dowling. 153 guests attended the social club and thoroughly enjoyed the presentations. This day plays a major part in our fundraising efforts for the Club. We will hold this function again in 2019 on the Friday before the VFL Final Series commences. The luncheon this year was our 15th annual lunceon. It was fantastic to host this event again in the Club’s function room. It was clearly one of our best.
1.3 WOMEN’S COACH 2018 saw Port Melbourne field a women’s team for the first time with the side competing in
Division 1 of the South East Women’s Football League. 38 players pulled on the Borough jumper for the first time, with the team winning four games and showing significant improvement as the season progressed. The demographics of the playing list ensured that several women new to the game were given the opportunity to play and under the circumstances the team performed creditably.
Congratulations to Captain Paige Holt on being the inaugural Best & Fairest winner and well
done to the other players that received awards at the Best & Fairest evening. Women’s football is more than a financial investment and as a contact sport, continues to
challenge long held gender stereotypes. The development of the women’s game may yet be one of the more significant social movements of the 21st century and that shouldn’t be lost of participants on both sides of the playing fence.
Lastly, I would like to thank the Port Melbourne Football Club for the opportunity to coach the
side in 2018 and all those who assisted along the way; your work was greatly appreciated. All the best for the Port Melbourne Football Club going forward. Andrew Calleja Women’s Coach

1.5 FOOTBALL OPERATIONS Coming off our remarkable 17th Premiership in 2017, anticipation was high leading into 2018.
Unfortunately following our Flag success, we said goodbye to 7 Premiership players including Champions of our Club in Captain Toby Pinwill, Chris Cain, Sam Dwyer, Hugh Sandilands, Brody Mihocek, Brodie Murdoch and Scott Clarke. A big congratulations to Brody Mihocek on his outstanding debut AFL season and recently penning a thoroughly deserved new 2 year contract.
It’s interesting when you come off success that it can look less attractive for players as a
destination during the recruiting period. This was the case last year as players contemplate the need to fight their way into the team. Unfortunately we just missed out on a few big fish and weren’t able to replace the major losses. It was extremely positive to see players that came off disappointing 2017 seasons to be major contributors in Daniel Beddison, Isaac Conway, Matt Arnot, Dylan Van Unen and Mack Rivett, who was a well deserved winner of the Jack McFarlane Medal at the ripe age of 22. The enthusiasm of the young brigade of Ethan Phillips, Cal Searle, Matt King, Tom Jnr O’Sullivan, Jake O’Brien, Campbell Walker and Billy Lloyd shows the future is bright with this crop coming through.
Throughout the duration of the season we were faced with the challenge of the poor condition
of the centre square of North Port Oval. Initially we were hit with the venue change of a practice game, the significant Round 1 Premiership Flag unfurling game, Round 2 and a later home game meant we gave up our esteemed home ground advantage. We were also greatly restricted at training only being allowed to train through the centre square a handful of times for the entire season which impacted our players’ confidence to move the ball and affected running patterns.
Throughout the year there were frustrations with key injuries to Damien Mascitti (5 games),
Lachlan waddell (8), Kieran Strachan (2), Isaac Conway (ACL) and Dillon Viojo-Rainbow (10). The heart-breaking elimination result in overtime ended our season abruptly after another fighting Borough display. We all know what Box Hill went on to achieve which show we were right up there with the best in the league when we played our best footy.
2018 will be remembered as a significant year; being the inaugural season of our women’s
team. Although there were challenges with recruiting and a tough draw, the improvement within the group and the team was encouraging and further improvement beckons in 2019. The Borough spirit and fantastic culture at the Club was immediately set within the women’s group. The 4 wins from the tough draw could easily have been 6 after agonising defeats by 1 and 4 points against quality opponents. A big thank you goes out to the entire coaching, support staff and volunteers of the team in making it a success as well as the Women’s Working Committee group.
The appreciation to all wonderful support is extended to the entire staff of the Football
Department, coaches, staff and Board that make the Club. I won’t name individuals as all the names are listed in this Annual Report and each plays a significant and important role. The Club wouldn’t be the same without the generous time and effort contributed which is greatly appreciated.
Lastly, this will be my last report after having the privilege of being the Football Manager for
the past 5 seasons. This great Club is made up of special people and I leave with great
As a stand-alone Club we constantly face some big hurdles. However, under the leadership of Gary Ayres and his coaching staff the players provided our supporters with another season that saw us compete in the VFL Finals. The enjoyment and pleasure the team provided for our loyal supporters during the season was something very special. On behalf of our members, we extend our congratulations to Gary Ayres, his staff and all of the players on their achievements in 2018.
We know that next year will be another interesting year. Now we also have our first ever team
in the women’s competition who will be fronting up for their second year. The PP&O Committee is looking forward to season 2019. Our major aim is for our Committee
to continue to drive to increase membership and database details. Season 2019 will see the PP&O Committee maintain its strong links with the Club and continue to work hard to ensure its success. On behalf of the Committee we congratulate and thank President Michael Shulman and the Board who have supported our Committee all year.
It was with great pleasure that we presented a cheque to the Club for $20,000 at the
Presentation Night in October. The Past Players & Officials Committee members for 2018 were Graeme Clark (President), Gary Brice (Secretary), Frank Johnson (Treasurer), Peter Wilkinson, Bill Swan, Kevin Goss, Darren Freyer, Glenn Robertson, Jim Christou, Greg Ryan, Adrian Bonaddio and Tristan Francis. I thank and congratulate all Committee members for their outstanding efforts this year. We have worked so well together in another rewarding and enjoyable year. The teamwork and mateship from years gone by continues. Nowadays we do this as spectators at matches, on the golf course and of late, on the bowling green.
Go the Borough! Graeme Clark President Past Players & Officials Association
