Drilling Motors | Oil Sealed Bearing Assemblies

Wenzel oil sealed bearing assemblies are built for ease of use and maintenance, lower service costs and reliable performance in low-to-moderate temperature wells. A tried and true workhorseCustomers around the world have entrusted Wenzel oil sealed bearing assemblies with their high-performance drilling needs for decades. These sturdy beasts have set a new standard for capable and reliable drilling, regularly outperforming when combined with even-wall and hard-rubber power section technology.

Modern, optimized designThe oil-sealed bearing packs are isolated from drilling fluid, keeping the internal components guarded against debris. This design – coupled with high strength, low-alloy steel and tungsten carbide coated parts – makes our motor resistant to corrosion and extends the life of seals and bearings. It also allows more fluid to be directed to the bit for maximized hydraulic efficiency, improved bottom-hole cleaning, better ROP and increased bit life.

Other features such as an optimized balance piston design, high WOB thrust bearing capacity and an adjustable load-bearing shoulder give operators confidence and flexibility to chase a higher ROP.

FlexibilityWenzel oil sealed motors are designed to drill any conventional hole size, and the screw-on stabilizer feature enables the use of a wide variety of stabilizers with multiple gauge outside diameters. We also offer custom screw-on stabilizer designs to meet the needs of your unique application. These motors can be equipped with our our fixed bend or 0 – 3º adjustable bend for directional drilling, or straight housing for rotary steerable applications.

Optimization for rotary steerable systemsFit your oil sealed motor with our pin-down mandrel and straight housing options to achieve high downhole RPM with rotary steerable systems (RSS). Restricted bypass plugs can also be installed to give you full control over the amount of fluid flowing to your rotary steerable system and bit. Read more about restricted bypass motors on page 17.

Drilling Motors | M9 Zero Bypass Rotary Steerable System Assist Motor

Adding a power section to your rotary steerable system (RSS) tool can provide significant RPM and torque gains with precise control. When it comes to RSS applications, Wenzel offers a number of drilling motor solutions including the M9 zero bypass motor.

Optimized flow for optimal lubrication and controlWhile our other mud lubricated and oil sealed (restricted bypass) drilling motors can be used in RSS applications, our M9 zero-bypass oil sealed bearing assembly was designed specifically with RSS applications in mind.

The M9 design incorporates a secondary oil sealed isolation chamber that separates bore pressure from annular pressure. This allows the main bearing assembly oil seal chamber to be balanced with annular presser, greatly increasing downhole reliability.

Meanwhile, 100% of the drilling fluid that flows through the M9 is sent through the drill bit without loss, providing maximized bit hydraulics and cleaning.

Restricted flow motors for RSS applications If the M9 zero bypass motor does not fit your RSS needs, consider our oil sealed drilling motors. The restricted bypass feature of our M5 and M6 oil sealed drilling motors gives you full control over the amount of fluid flowing to your rotary steerable system and bit.

Bypassed mud flow can be limited with the use of specially designed jetted plugs, which reduce the restricted flow area of the piston housing ports. This allows optimal fluid to flow to the RSS and prevents wash within the assembly due to increased flow velocity.

Drilling Jars | Double Acting Hydraulic Jar (HJDA)

For reliable defense against stuck drillstrings in highly deviated or high-friction wells, the Wenzel HJDA offers sturdy and powerful hydraulic, bidirectional action.

Twin metering valvesThe Wenzel HJDA is a purely hydraulic bidirectional drilling jar that allows the operator to apply variable impact in both the up and down directions – unaffected by left or right hand torque.

Variable, operator-controlled impact is acheived thanks to a pair of hydraulic metering valves that feature high level flow restriction with large passage. The metering device (Visco Jet) ensures consistent delay times over a full range of operating temperatures and delay can be changed by swapping jets. These high performance valves have been used successfully in the aerospace industry, where precision and reliability is paramount.

Because of the HJDA’s latch-free design, the range of jar placement options increases significantly. The HJDA can be used in tension or compression, and is an excellent option when available force is not sufficient to jar down with conventional HMJ drilling jars.

Simpler, smaller and cost effective The minimalist design of our HJDA makes it the shortest drilling jar on the market. Fewer oil seal chambers and parts keeps costs down and maintenance simple. By shortening the length of the HJDA, longer flex collars can be used to reduce bending stress across the jar.

To further increase its durability, we coat all external sealing surfaces with wear and corrosion resistant tungsten carbide.

Twin metering valves

Expand your options with convertible jars Keep both hydraulic and mechanical jar options on hand with a single asset and minimal inventory thanks to Wenzel’s convertible jar system. The HJDA can be easily converted to both a Hydraulic Mechanical Double-Acting drilling jar (HMDA) or a Hydraulic Mechanical Single-Acting jar (HMSA). In addition to giving you options with a single asset and reducing inventory, the convertability of our HJDA gives you flexibility to move these assets into any region for any application.

Deliver the ULTIMATE punchThe Wenzel HJDA is available in our proprietary Ultimate configuration, which gives operators the highest overpull capacity on the market. Learn more about our Ultimate jar configurations on page 23.

Drilling Jars | Double Acting Hydraulic Mechanical Drilling Jar (HMDA)

For safe handling and predictable jarring action during operation, the Wenzel HMDA jar provides effective jarring action in both directions.

Latched for safety and predictabilityThe Wenzel HMDA is a double-acting hydraulic jar designed to deliver a hydraulic delay when jarring in both the up and down directions. What makes the HMDA different is the mechanical latch that keeps the jar locked in the neutral position. This latch eliminates unexpected jarring during operation and handling – and keeps people safe.

Simple operationLike our HJDA, the HMDA jar incorporates a Visco Jet metering device that ensures consistent delay times over a full range of operating temperatures, up to 250°F (120ºC) with standard seals or 450ºF (230ºC) with the addition of heat- resistant seals. Delayed jar firing allows the driller to control loads.

The HMDA can be run in tension or in compression within the preset latch setting, and operates via a simple up and down motion that is unaffected by right or left hand torque.

Built to lastThe HMDA, like all other Wenzel jars, is designed without any housing ports to the annulus. Such ports can restrict jar stroke, impact strength and seal integrity. The spline drive and latch mechanism are enclosed in a single oil chamber and the double-acting hydraulic valves in a second oil chamber. Minimizing the number of oil chambers reduces the seals required, increasing jar reliability.

All external sealing surfaces are coated with wear and corrosion resistant tungsten carbide.

Mechanical latch

Expand your options with convertible jars The Wenzel HMDA can be easily converted to a Double-Acting Hydraulic Jar (HJDA) or a Hydraulic Mechanical Single-Acting jar (HMSA). The HMSA conversion is done with the simple removal of the down-firing hydraulic valve. In addition to giving you options with a single asset and reducing inventory, the convertability of our HMDA gives you flexibility to move these assets into any region for any application.

Drilling Jars | Hydraulic Mechanical Jar (HMJ)

Spline driveThe HMJ spline drive carries torsional forces between the housing and mandrel. It is sealed and lubricated, minimizing friction and increasing component life.

Fewer oil chambersThe Wenzel HMJ has just two oil chambers – one combined chamber for the spline drive and mechanical latch, and a second for hydraulic jarring. Fewer oil chambers means fewer seals and greater reliability.

Fixed pistonLike all Wenzel drilling jars, the HMJ has no free-moving balance piston or ports through the housing to the annulus. This keeps fluid and drill cuttings out of the tool, preventing additional wear on seals.

Latch sectionThe built-in mechanical latch keeps the jar locked in a neutral position, which prevents stroking of the jar downhole and unintentional firing of the jar while drilling or tripping. When latched, the mandrel and housing act integrally, eliminating seal and inner-tool wear. The latch eliminates the need for a safety collar and special handling/precautions on the rig floor.

Hydraulic valveThe HMJ hydraulic valve provides delay when jarring up, allowing drillers to vary overpull and control impact force. The valve resides in its own oil seal chamber for increased reliability, and a robust metering device controls delay times across operating temperatures.

HMJ hydraulic valve

Expand your options with convertible jarsFor added flexibility, consider our HJDA or HMDA drilling jars, which can be converted to a Hydraulic Mechanical Single-Acting (HMSA) jar. The HMSA is similar in function to the conventional HMJ, but with a longer stroke adopted from the base HJDA/HMDA design. Contact a WZL representative for details.

Deliver the ULTIMATE punchThe Wenzel HMJ is also available in Enhanced or our proprietary Ultimate configurations. Our Ultimate jars give operators the highest overpull capacity on the market. Learn more about our Ultimate jar configurations on page 23.

29

The jar that started it all... Our conventional HMJ delivers hydraulic operation when jarring upward, and mechanical operation down-ward. A time delay allows load variance prior to jarring up, and a safety latch mechanism to prevent unexpected jarring.

Drilling Jars | Hydraulic Fishing Jar (HJ)

The LiberatorThe Wenzel HJ is a single acting, upward firing jar designed primarily to free your assets from tight jams. The HJ is smaller and lighter than our line of drilling jars, and can be positioned in conjunction with accelerators to provide optimal jarring action. Additionally, the HJ can be configured in our Ultimate set up, giving you the highest overpull on the market.

The HJ is hydraulically activated in the up direction with impact force controlled by the operator. The Visco Jet metering device ensures consistent delay times over a full range of operating temperatures.

Built to lastThough our HJ is designed to be rugged enough for drilling applications, it is intended for fishing, coring and milling applications. A long, splined mandrel ensures the HJ is not affected by torsional forces and splines are sealed and lubricated to minimize friction and reduce wear.

Standard seals are effective to 250ºF (120ºC), and the HJ can be dressed with seals effective to 400ºF (200ºC) for hot hole environments.

All external sealing surfaces are coated with wear and corrosion resistant tungsten carbide.

Drilling Jars | Hydraulic Jar AcceleratorsOptimize your jarring stroke with a Wenzel jar accelerator. Our accelerators ensure smooth impactful jarring strokes regardless of well depth and deviation. Ensure adequate jarring wherever you areWenzel jar accelerators are hydraulic springs that store energy in order to intensify jarring impact. When overpull is applied to the drilling jar, the accelerator extends via tension and stores energy in the hydraulic chamber. When the jar fires, stored energy is instantly released, accelerating drill collars above the jar.

Accelerators supplement insufficient drill pipe stretch during jarring operations, which can occur in very shallow holes. They are also recommended for use in extended reach or deviated wells where jar performace could suffer due to hold drag. Wenzel accelerators can also prevent shock waves and other vibrations from travelling up the drill string, protecting your assets in a way similar to that of our shock tool. The operation of our accelerators is independent of fluid circulation, and full torque can be transmitted through the tools.

Built to lastWenzel jar accelerators are built to last through repeated use in the harshest conditions. Featuring a sealed and lubricated spline drive, our accelerators provide long service life under high torque and stroking applications. Standard seals in the tool are effective to 250º F (120º C) but can be dressed with seals effective to 400º F (200º C). The tools can also be sealed externally with a specialized tungsten carbide coating to enhance wear and corrosion resistance.

Double upIf you’re using a Wenzel HJDA or HMDA, make sure you take advantage of our double-acting accelerator. Double-acting accelerators work with double-acting jars and store energy through both tension and compression.

Drilling Jars | Jar Placement Application

Our Jar Placement Utility desktop application was developed to help you get the most from your HMJ, HMDA, HJDA and fishing jars.

Above: Screenshots of the Jar Placement Utility application showing ideal placement from jar to bit.

Don’t roll the dice

Take the guesswork out of jar placements with the help of our in-house developed jar placement application. Calculate impact and impulse relative to jar-to-bit length using variables specific to your run and identify your optimal jar placement.

The application can be used for vertical, directional and horizontal drilling. It can also calculate accelerator placement.

39

To keep every run as smooth and predictable as possible, we offer a number of robust drilling tools that work in tandem with our motors to give you more accurate and reliable runs, and help protect your assets. The result is longer, uninterrupted run times and lower cost-per-distance of hole.

We continue to engineer new drilling solutions and improve existing designs. Our tools are offered in an industry-leading number of outside and inside diameters, ensuring you always have the right tool for the job.

• Shock Tool• Bumper Sub

Drilling Tools

40

Anti-friction toolsWhen used in tandem with axial anti-friction tools, our shock tool can help spread axial vibrations further along the drill string.

By smoothing out and lengthening these vibrations, axial shock loads can be reduced by up to 20% while drilling power increases.

MWD protectionProtect and ensure accuracy from your high-value and carefully calibrated mea-surement-while-drilling (MWD) tool by reducing axial vibration through the simple addition of a cost-effective Wenzel shock tool.

Drilling Tools | Wenzel Shock Tool

The Wenzel shock tool does more than reduce bit vibration in hard formations. And thanks to its simple design, it is the most durable and cost-effective shock tool on the market. We also offer our shock tool in a wider array of sizes than anyone else.

Bit vibrationWhen drilling through tough, hard rock formations and/or using aggressive hammer drilling tools, additional vibration can occur and cause excessive stress to drill bits.

The Wenzel shock tool helps reduce bit vibration without lifting the bit from its point of contact. Results include better boreholes, increased ROP and extended life of BHA equipment.

Our simple design and quality materials ensure our tool is built to withstand incredible forces and is easy to maintain.

Drilling Tools | Bumper Sub

This traditional downhole tool has numerous applications during fishing, coring and workover operations.

The Wenzel bumper sub is a tried-and-true downhole tool that has for years been trusted to complete fishing, testing and plug-and-abandonment jobs around the world. Its versatility allows operators to engage and release various fishing or testing tools, or apply constant and precise weight to sensitive milling and cutting tools.

As the name suggests, the bumper sub is built to jar or “bump” upward or downward to dislodge stuck equipment or clear debris.

Like other Wenzel jarring tools, our bumper sub features a sealed and lubricated spline drive that provides long service life under high torque and stroking applications. External sealing surfaces are tungsten carbide coated to enhance wear and corrosion resistance, and standard seals are effective to 250°F (120°C). For hot hole environments, the sub can be dressed with seals effective to 400°F (200°C).
