Parents and Teachers AgreeBack To School Night Is A Fun Place To Be

Back to school night gives par-

ents the opportunity to become

students once again. Parents

enjoy meeting the teachers that

they've heard so much about.

Teachers try to guess which

parents match up with which

students. Back to school night

is a great night for everyone.

— THE STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS —HARD AT WORK TO PROMOTE SCHOOL SPIRIT

This year the Student Council revitalized Dayton spirit by

bringing back the cherished November Fall Festival. During

this fun-filled week, the Student Council sponsored a very

successful hall decorating contest and pep rally. In February,

the Student Council also ran a Valentine's Day/Lip-Synch

Dance. In addition, the Student Council also brought a proposal

before the Board of Education calling for reinstatement of

senior exemptions from final exams, and spearheaded a pro-

gram which would provide photo identification cards for all

students of the regional district. The Student Council is also

planning to hold a talent show for its spring function.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY DEMONSTRATESEXCELLENCE

m

The National Honor Society is an academic organization honoring Dayton's finest

students. In order to be a member of this distinguished group, students mustachieve at least a 3.5 grade point average, and must demonstrate leadrship,

character, scholarship, and service to others. Under the leadership of President

Nathaniel Zoneraich, Vice-President Janet Wilson, Secretary Gregory Saliceti,

and Treasurer Monica Magee, the club works to uphold the tradition of academicexcellence. Ms. Anita Tedesco and Mrs. (Jna Mellon aid in the selection of the

students and serve as advisors for the club.

WHAT IS MELOPOEIA? STUDENT WRITERS HAVETHE ANSWER!

Each year a select group of interested students produce

Dayton's annual literary magazine, Melopoeia. The staff

opens its doors to any submissions that students wish to

contribute to Dayton's most prestigious literary journal.

Careful consideration is taken in the evaluation of student

writings. All genres are usually represented in the myriad

of submissions the magazine staffers are compelled to

review. Ultimately, a literary masterpiece of student writ-

ings is completed — and another Melopoeia hits the

KEY CLUB PROMOTES STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

The Key Club is an organization dedicated to serve the community. This

year's officers were: President Charlotte Jaffe; Vice President Preeti Singh;

Treasurer Jason Poindexter; and Secretary Richard Hausman. The club

participated in many activities to benefit others. Such activities included

Food Banks, a Bowl-a-Thon for Leukemia, library clean-ups, and volleyball

games to raise money for a girl dying of a liver disorder. All Key Club

members should be proud of their success in aiding the community and

proving true this year's theme "For Friendship's Sake."

33

EXECUTIVE SEARCH CLUB SHARPENSSTUDENTS FOR BUSINESS

Mr. Rossi's Executive Search Club is composed of students from the Accounting II

class. During the year, the club takes field trips to observe financial operations of

businesses. The activities include visits to the New York Stock Exchange, com-

munity services, fund raisers, and school displays. The course enables students to

learn about successful and effective business techniques and, at the same time,

have fun.

The Dayton Journal celebrates its 50th

anniversary this year along with the

school. Things have changed, but the

Journal still puts out informative, en-

tertaining articles, photos, editorials and

surveys. The Supreme Court decision to

allow administrative monitoring and

editing of possibly harmful material did

not put a damper on the Journal's pro-

duction. Under the direction of Mrs.

Kendler, chief editor Eric Weinstein and

other editors Matt Zucker, Andrea Stein,

Jeff Sumner, Matt Swarts, Thorn

Karamus, Greg Saliciti, Carl-Christian

Jackson, Lynne Dahmen and Business

manager Josh Brinen, the Journal has

produced many interesting articles this

year. Hurray for freedom of the press!

DAYTON ARTISTS CULTIVATE TALENT

The Art Club is made up of Dayton

students who enjoy expressing

themselves through their artistic

talents. On Wednesdays after

school in GR$, interested artists

meet and cultivate their talents in

drawing and painting. Many of the

art club members desire to con-

tinue on with their talents and ma-

jor in some aspect of art in college.

Through the club, students, along

with their advisor, Mr. Brodman,

discuss each others works and

supply constructive criticism. All

artists and students who are in-

terested in Art are invited to at-

tend the meetings and improve on

their artistic abilities.

SCIENCE LEAGUE EXPLORES NEW HORIZONS

The science league, one of the most

academic and challenging activities at

Dayton, is a very popular activity. Theleague is comprised of students in Bi-

ology, Chemistry and Physics classes

who all compete in area science tests.

Mrs. Shanahan, Science supervisor, is

the advisor of the club and is responsible

for arranging the different competitions

and tests. Every month Dayton students

get together with other schools and

compete in their specific area of sci-

ence. In this league, students are able to

sharpen their skills and apply their in-

terests and abilities. The members of

the Science League have proven them-

selves to be Daytons top students.

40

DAYTON STUDENTS STAR ON TELEVISION

Traditionally, interested Dayton students have participated in the

TV-3 affiliated Challenge contest — and traditionally, Dayton

Challenge teams have done exceptionally well in the heat of

competition. This year, however, the trivia wheel took a turn in the

opposite direction, as Dayton was chosen to compete in the select

New Jersey Rutgers Bowl — an elite contest for educated youths.

Dayton 'Bowlers' Greg Saliceti, Mike VonDerLinn, Ted Roth, Scott

Oliver, and Richard Houseman fared well for our grand old school.

In the preliminary round of competition, our enthusiastic squad

beat fiercesome Whippany Park by a margin of 505 to 285. In the

next round, Dayton proved itself again, romping obviously-inferior

Point Pleasant Beach with a fortuitous final score of 540-150.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end — and our

Bowlers proved no exception. They were eliminated by a very

lucky but motley crew from Scotch Plains in the quarterfinals of

the State Championship. Mr. Fox, the faculty-advisor and skipper

of the Dayton crew, nonetheless, was extremely pleased with this

year's fine minds.

LE CERCLE FRANCAIS: UNE BONNE ANNEE!

This year's French Club is a whirlwind of activity. Starting off

with a French cooking activity, the club has put a large

emphasis on French culture. They took a trip to Rahway

Theater th see a production of Mollier's "L'Avare" in early

December and a few of the members went to hew York City to

see the Broadway production of "Les Miserables." Fundrasers

this year include, Crossant and O.J. sales and a Chocolate sale.

In the spirit of Foriegn Language Week, The club put up French

room signs, Sold croissants, and held a button contest. The

winner recieved free passage when the club planned it's trip

N.Y.C. this spring. Despite the long absense of the club's

advisor, Miss Carloyn Fahrmann, officers Matt Zucker, Preeti

Singh, Stephanie Raulke, and Anne Holester, under the tem-

porary direction of Mrs. Tedesco, have kept the club active and

"vivant" all year!

"SHALOM" FROM THE HEBREW CLUB!

The 1987-1988 Hebrew Club had an invigorating year. Officers Beth

Manes and Robin Mishkin planned a trip to New York to see the

acclaimed Off-Broadway presentation, "A Shayna-Meklel", with Me-

lissa Gilbert. The Hebrew Club also conducted several excellent

discussion groups dealing with U.S. & Israeli relations and the current

situation in the West Bank. Our Hebrew teacher, Mrs. Eckman has

also been able to teach Hebrew 3 for the first time in five years.

Congratulations to Mrs. Eckman and the rest of the Hebrew Club.

EL CLUB DE ESPANOL SAYS "HOLA"The '87-88 Spanish Club had a very

active and exciting year. In the be-

ginning of this school season, manyof the club members took a trip to

the New York City Town Hall to view

a Spanish Flamenco Concert. Thestudents then ate at the authentic

Spanish restaurant Meson Botin. Theclub also visited Brearly High School

for a performance by the Spanish

musical group Las Tunas. Daytonwas represented by the Spanish Club

President Pamela Nadzan who acted

as "madrina." Pamela presented the

singer with ribbons of orange and

blue. The final trip for the club mem-bers who were the top candy sellers

of the Spanish Club Gertrude HawkeCandy Sale was to the United Na-

tions. This trip took many of the

students to New York for a unique

opportunity to view the inside of the

CJ.N. As an addition to the club ac-

tivities, the Trivia Bowl was the mostexciting and successful activity of

the year. The game was conducted

by Senor Farrell, Senor Ortiz, andMrs. Levy. The trivia game was spo-

ken in Spanish in which two teams of

twelve attempted to answer ques-

tions pertaining to Spanish history,

culture, vocabulary, grammar, geog-

raphy, and food. Each of the twenty-

four participants received Spanish

notecards and an invitation to a cat-

ered reception which was the grande

finale of the competition. This has

been one of the most entertaining

and eventful years for the Dayton

Spanish Club. Thanks given to Pres-

ident Pamela Nadzen, Vice-President

Steven Dorlen, Treasurer Mark Ben-

jamin, and Secretary DaylaRubanenko.

ACTORS TAKE THE STAGE BY STORM

The Drama Club had a very exciting and sucessful

year. This year's members tried out and showed their

wonderful acting abilities for the school's play "Enter

Laughing" and musical "Once Gpon A Mattress."

Many members of the club became involved in the

play by either performing or helping backstage with

scenery, lighting, and many other jobs. The best actors

and actresses became elegible for membership in the

National Thespian Society, with recommendations

from Mr. Trinity, the club's advisor. President Robby

Hilliard, Vice President Jay Jellinek, and Secretary

Lauren Sueskind, wish continued success with the

future Drama Clubs. Good Luck to the Drama Club of

'89.

one can hear as one walks past a marching band

the band once again enjoyed a successful year. Gnder

the direction of Mr. Martin Friedman, the Bulldog band

triumphed over obstacles of a large freshman pop-

ulation and a small band front — boasting five girls —to compete in many competitions around New Jersey.

For Halloween, the band got into the spirit by dressing

as Bulldog football players. They also performed for

the Thanksgiving/ Fall Festival pep rally and bonfire.

Officers this year include: Robin Goodman, Drum Ma-

jorette; Irina Shlafman, Guard Captain; Stephanie

Ruelke, Guard Co-Captain; Suzanne Vadas and Rachel

Cutler, Wind Leaders; and Tom Balke, Percussion Cap-

tain. Soloists are Steve Dorlen and Mike Shapiro.

CONCERT BAND TUNED IN TO MUSIC

1987-88 is another busy year for Dayton's

concert band. Cinder the direction of Mr. Mar-

tin Friedman, the band has a full schedule of

performances, including concerts in Halsey

Hall in February and May, and a competition

during the spring trip to Maryland. In addition,

the concert band is providing the music for

Dayton's fiftieth anniversary celebration. The

band is also involved with the two junior

highs, traveling to both of them to give dem-

onstration performances and offering eigth

grade musicians the opportunity to learn

about the band by participating in the winter

concert. Besides a wide selection of different

types of music, the band's concert program

also features several chamber ensembles of

brass, flutes, and saxophones. In spite of its

small size, Dayton's concert band is deter-

mined to make music together.

56

JAZZ BAND GETS DOWN!

This year the Dayton Jazz Band is getting down to the business

of playing lots and lots of jazz. In addition to performing at the

annual winter and spring concerts in the school auditorium, the

jazz band is scheduled to compete in Maryland on the spring

trip, as well as in several local competitions. This year the jazz

band is continuing the popular tradition that began last year, by

losting another jazz exposition at Dayton, featuring bands from

the four regional schools and from the Manhattan School of

Music. The Dayton jazz band is directed by Mr. Martin

Friedman, and this year's soloists are Rachel Cutler, Mike

Shapiro, Gwen Thompson, and Suzanne Vadas. With a full

schedule of performances, the band is always kept busy playing

wing, blues, and all that jazz!

Burn, Baby, Burn!November 25th, 1987 — DAYTON'S FIRST BONFIRE. The scene started on the back

end of the front soccer field at seven o'clock. Hundreds of students and the band gathered

the crowd as they lit the fire. In no time the flames danced high in the air as everyone

DAYTON CHEERLEADERS BRING BACK SCHOOLSPIRIT

We are the mighty Varsity ELITE cheerleaders! The 1987 Cheerleaders brought back a

great deal of Dayton spirit this year! The Pep Rally was wild and the first Bonfire ever

was so successful; thanks to our cheerleaders! The Fall squad was led by captains Beth

Manes and Staci Clchitel, while the Winter squad was led by captains Christina

Graziano and Stephanie Schlosser. Attending Summer Cheerleading Camp, planning

the Mr. Regional Dance, going to football breakfasts, decorating football, soccer,

basketball and wrestling lockers, going to away games and other fun activities have

made this year a giant success. The support from our coaches; Miss Duke, Miss

Rosania, Mrs. Verschuren and the newest member of our coaching staff, Mrs.

McCullough have helped lead us to the end of the best year ever. Thanks for

everything!

DAWGS ON THE GRIDIRONHIT EM HARD!!!

The 1987 DAWGS were faced with a tough task even before the season began. Anytime a team must play under a new head coach, hard times could be expected.

Unfortunately, such was the case for John LeDonne's squad this year. Yet despite

playing a rugged schedule consisting of four state playoff teams, the DAWGS finished 3-

6. After opening the season with consecutive losses to Clark and Hillside, the teampulled off a major upset over Roselle. Sparked by a Jeff Stoffer touchdown run and a

stunning 60 yard touchdown pass from Gregg Walsh to William Lee late in the game,

the DAWGS won 15-12. The following week, in a game televised on TV-3, the team beat

Berkeley Heights 20-3. Highlighting the victory was a touchdown run by Jeff Debbie

along with two touchdown runs by Walsh. The Bulldogs' final victory came against

Parsippany Hills by a margin of 23-7. In the game, touchdowns were scored by Stoffer,

Lee, and Walsh and Glen Miske added a field goal. In summarizing the year Co-Captain

Gregg Walsh led the team with 900 total yards, while adding 4 rushing touchdowns and

2 touchdown passes. Co-Captain Jeff Stoffer led the team with 38 points, including 6

touchdowns. William Lee led the team in receiving yards while Glen Miske added 2 field

goals and 10 extra points. Defensively, Danny Francis, Chris Kisch, and Walsh led the

team in tackles. Other stellar contributors included linemen Mike Elson and Dave

Koenigsberg as well as end John Saraka. In recognition of their fine performances,

Walsh and Francis were selected First-Team All-Conference while Stoffer and Kisch

received honorable mention. In addition, Walsh and Francis were named Second —Team All County, All-Metro, and All-Suburban. Walsh was also selected First Team All

County Leader and 2nd Team Group-2 All State. Best of Luck to all the Seniors and

BOY'S SOCCER TEAM:WINNERS AGAIN

It was a successful season for the varsity soccer team in 1987

coached by Frank Ortiz. The Dawgs finished 13-5-1 and finished in

second place in the Mountain Valley Conference with a conference

record of 10-2-1. Senior captains Marcelo Reyna, KamuranBayrasli, and Craig Carson Ird the defense to a succesful year in

front of goalie Peter Sadin, who finished impressively with 10

shutouts. Senior forward, Kamuran Bayrasli: helped to spearhead a

succesful offense for the Bulldogs with his experience, "Mr.

Offense" had 10 goals, however he did not lead the team in

scoring. Junior halfback Jim Barret had 13 goals, freshman

Claudio Reyna had 12 goals and "Mr. Defense," Marcelo Reyna

added 1 1 scores. The season was marked with many close games

and thrilling victories. In the quarterfinals of the county tour-

nament, the team played a close, hard fought game in Summit,

losing in a shootout. Another tough loss was a 3-2 defeat at Ridge

in the deciding game for the conference final. Dayton also had its

share of exciting wins. A tough 1-0 win over Johnson Regional was

a high point in a successful regular season. The highlight of the

season was the exciting overtime victory over Govenor Liv-

ingston. The Dawgs won 4-2 in a tight shootout, defeating their

arch rivals in the process. The season came to an end with a 2-0

defeat at the hands of Millburn, in the sectional semi-finals.

Mitchell Friedberg, Curtis Fenf and Rich Markovich help to solidify

the Dawg defense. Brian Teitelbaum and Tom Kelley helped to

spark the offense. However, good team play provided a fine season

for the Dayton squad.

THE LADY BULLDOGS SHOW THEIR SPIRIT ANDSCORE A GOAL FOR DAYTON!

This year the Girls' Varsity Soccer Team had a successful season. With the large amount of returning sophomores and a few newfreshmen, the team was used to playing together and could communicate well. Mr. Arthur Krupp and Mr. John Kovolisky did a fine job

in coaching the team in its 6-8-1 season. Senior co-captains Maria Buckley and Lurlene Harrison were the backbone to the team. Lurlene

was selected to the second team All-Conference. Also receiving honors were Maria Buckley and Ann Marie Kovacs with Honorable

Mentions All-Conference. Seniors Tracy Everly and Staci Weinerman also had a strong hold on the team's defense, with Staci in the goal

and Tracy in the full-back position. First year junior, Liz Pabst, led the team to their victories by scoring goals for the Bulldogs.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL SOARS TO THE TOP OFTHE COURT

This year's Girls' Varsity Basketball Team has had a very successful year, ending the season with a record of 10 wins and 13

losses. The team is optimistic about the future, however sorry to lose their senior guard Staci Weinerman. Four starters are coming

back next year. Junior guard, fciz Pabst, and sophomores Colleen Drummond, Jennifer Francis," and Lauren Meixner. Staci

Weinerman had a very successful year. In the game against Middlesex, Staci scored her one-thousandth point. She went on to

become Dayton's alltime leading scorer, with points in her high school career. Junior Liz Pabst lead the team with her dribbling

abilities. We are fortunate to have her back next year. Sophomores Colleen Drummond, Jen Francis, and Lauren Meixner showed

dramatic improvement from last year to this year. We are optimistic about seeing even better things from them in the future.

The 1987-88 Bowling team consisting of David Brahm, Craig Carson,

Jamie Downey, Matt Applebaum, Michael DeChristaforo, Rich Haus-

man, and Michael Kowel compiled a 307-1 1 1 record. The team came in

second in the conference and sixth in the county under the leadership of

Coach Swedish. Next year over half of the starters will be returning and

DAYTON TENNIS TEAM ACES ANOTHER YEAR!

This year the 1988 Dayton Bulldogs hope to once again con-

quer the Mountain Valley Conference and move on to County

and State tournaments. Gnder the expert direction of Coach

John Deliacono, the team, led by captain Ted Roth is sure to

make a great showing this season. Returning lettermen, Ted

Roth, Eric Rauschenberger, and Bland Eng will be the pow-

erhouse of the team with other players such as Mitch Friedberg,

David Brooks, and Marcelo Reyna not far behind. We wish the

team much luck in this season and hope to see them in the

State tournament.

BASEBALL "DAWGS" PITCH FOR A NEW YEAR

The "Dawgs" struggled through the 1987 season, but have high expectations for the 1988

season. The "Dawgs" will be boosted by the return of eight previou lettermen. The pitching

staff will be anchored by Dave Lissy, Dan Lissy, and John Saraka. Their battery mate will be

senior, Jamie Downey. The infield will be strong up the middle with Michael Mancuso and

Pete Kozubal. Offensively, Glen Miske, junior first baseman, should be successful. The

outfield will be led by Craig Carson and Eric Incandela. The "Dawgs" will be looking for

contributions from other juniors and some sophmore surprises. Coach lacono is confident

that his fourth year as head coach will be filled with success.

LADY BULLDOGS MAKE A GRAND SLAM SHOW!

The Dayton Varsity Softball team is looking good this year. The

team consists of many returning lettermen, and some prom-

ising underclassmen. We are looking for good things from

seniors: Dana Fischer, Lurleen Harrison, Robin Mishkin, and

Staci Weinermen. With these girls, juniors: Brenda Hockstein,

and Karen Geraghty, and other fine athletes, the team should

have a very successful year.

120

Players on the Dayton Softball team strut their stuff on the playing field. In

hitting, catching and fielding, these Lady Bulldogs are always grand slamming!

VOLLEYBALL VIXENS SET UP FOR VICTORYThis volleyball season is the culmination of three years of

hard work. Four of the starting six players, Pamela Nadzan,

Eileen Brumley, Roopal Desai and Preeti Singh, all of which

are seniors, have striven together over the past three me-diocre seasons. During this time, these girls have improved

the teamwork skills, and as a group have led the team to

many outstanding victories. Irene Wasylyk, a sophomore,

also contributed to this team's success. The girls have

proven their determination and strength by competing well

against some of the toughest competition in the nation.

Thanks to Coach Steven Fenton and our dedicated manager,

Rachel Cutler, the season of 1988 was an outstanding,as well

as enjoyable one. To All Varsity Players, It's been a great four

years. The memories: MOOSE;"Darlin'you send me";McDonald's; NaRee!; will last forever! Thanks for everything,

and we love you all. Love, Captains Pamela And Eileen

STEPHANIE,Friend —A seeing mirror of myself, and I of you.

My shadow, my other half, my confidante,

And I, yours.

So alike that I often wonder —If we hadn't lived at the same time,

And fate had not fancied our meeting,

Would we not feel that something —A piece of ourselves was missing?

You are my missing piece.

Because we are so different,

We have so much to share —Because we are so alike,

We understand each other so well.

I LOVE YOU LIKE A SISTER, MELINDA
