Plastic Bags? No Thanks!

Success!We often hear gloomy stories about pollution and its effects on the world. But for once

there is some good news.

In October 2015, a new law was passed in England to bring it in line with the rest of

the UK. Since then, all big supermarkets and shops have charged 5 pence for every plastic

bag we use. The result? People are now being more careful about using plastic bags.

Instead, they take their own reusable bags with them when they shop. In one year, around

6 billion – that’s 6 000 000 000 – fewer plastic bags were

used. That is a LOT of plastic!

If someone needs to buy a plastic bag, it’s good to know

that the money paid goes to support good causes.

For example, one large supermarket chain gives grants to

local projects that improve the environment. In one year,

over £29 million was raised in England.

Why cut down on plastic?

Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down when it is put into landfi ll sites*. Plastic bags can easily be blown about by the wind and often fi nd their way into rivers and

the sea. Wherever it ends up, this plastic can cause damage to plants, and endanger animals

and people. Wild animals, such as hedgehogs, may

become entangled in shreds of old plastic bags.

Other animals that live by rivers and streams, such

as otters, may climb inside a bag and suffocate.

each year. It may have come from land, or it may

Precious knew the answer to that. Her father had once taken her to see a herd being prepared

for market. This was what was happening here: a farmer had gathered in all his cattle to

be collected for market. Unfortunately the cow must have heard or smelled them and had

decided to join in.

The three children ran towards the herd. They

had seen a couple of men standing nearby and

they guessed that these were the people in

charge. All they would have to do would be to

identify their cow and then lead her back home.

It was Teb who spoke first.

“Excuse me,” she said very politely. “Our cow

has run away. We’ve tracked her and we think

she’s joined this herd. Could we have her back

please?”

The two men, who had been talking to

one another, stopped their conversation and

looked at Teb.

“These are our cows,” one said. “Sorry. Your

cow must have gone somewhere else.”

“No,” said Precious. “She’s here. We followed

her hoofprints.”

One of the men laughed. “Followed her

hoofprints? What nonsense! These cows all

belong to us.”

Precious bit her lip. It was hard not to be

believed when you knew that you’re telling

the truth. But there was no point in getting

cross about it because that could only make

it worse. So instead of insisting that she was

right, she simply said to the men, “But if we

can prove it? Would you let us take our cow?”

Plastic soupA scientist, taking part in a yacht race in 1997, made

an astonishing discovery, by pure chance. He found

himself surrounded by rubbish – bits of paper and

wood all tangled up in scraps of plastic – thousands

of miles from land in the middle of the Pacifi c Ocean.

It took him more than a week to pass through it. This

huge expanse of rubbish, now known as ‘The Great

Pacifi c Garbage Patch’, is twice the size of the United

States of America. Every year it grows larger

and larger.

What’s for dinner?Scientists say that plastic waste causes the deaths of

around a million seabirds each year. Plastic packets,

cigarette lighters, even toothbrushes, have been found

inside the stomachs of dead seabirds. A turtle looking

for food may mistake a plastic bag for a jellyfi sh and

eat it. Then the plastic can block the animal’s digestive

system, which

means it will die of

starvation. A recent

discovery is that microscopic particles of plastic are

being swallowed by fi sh – then humans eat the fi sh

and may absorb the plastic too. Action needs to be

taken to make sure this does not continue.

A long way to goThe problem of plastic waste will take a long time

to solve – and people all over the world need to

help. The UK’s effort to reduce the number of

plastic bags may look like a very small start.

But of course, a journey of a thousand miles

has to start with one small step. If we can all

remember to take our own bags when shopping

that will be a good beginning.
