ALUMNI MAGAZINE

This year’s Fall Homecoming was a family affair for Sam Winston, OD ’11, as he returned to his alma mater with wife, Lea, and their two children, Noah and Lydia. The children’s great-grandfather was the late Harold Winston, OD ’41, who would no doubt be proud that nearly 75 years after his graduation, the Winston family remains connected to SCO. The junior Dr. Winston joined his father, Barry Winston, OD ’74, and uncle, Jerry Winston, OD ’67, both in practice and in supporting a family scholarship to encourage new generations to pursue optometry.

connectionDr. Winston and other alumni encourage you to stay connected with your alma mater. Your support enables scholarship opportunities and outstanding clinical training that makes SCO’s graduates leaders in our profession.

FROM THE PRESIDENTEach fall, excitement builds on campus as our faculty and staff prepare for

a new academic year. We cannot help but be reinvigorated as we see the optimism and enthusiasm in our new students as they begin the four-year journey that will ultimately transform them from entering students into top caliber optometric physicians.

This fall’s entering class set records for average GPA and OAT scores and for the number of individuals admitted. In fact, our students were in the top six in the country in both GPA and OAT scores…only two other colleges of optometry can boast that. Our students gained acceptance by demonstrating the superior attributes and academic track record that SCO expects of our students. They dem-

onstrated to faculty members in the interview process that they know what they are getting into, and are anxious to begin.

Our newest students join an institution dedicated to achieving outstanding performance and continuous process improvement. In recent years, SCO has enjoyed a reputation for training top clinicians. This year, we saw more opportunities than ever before for our interns to use what they’ve learned through an increasing number of community outreach events,

as well as a record number of patients seen through The Eye Center. These pro-grams provide our interns with greater patient encounters, and at the same time, demonstrate to the local community that SCO is dedicated to using our expertise to make life better for our neighbors. Besides setting records for patient fees, we set a record for the provision of uncompensated services (>$1.4 M).

Building on this kind of positive momentum has been a primary objective for SCO’s Strategic Planning Committee. Including four members of our Board of Trustees, the committee met in November to identify goals that will guide our institution over the next five years. The full Board of Trustees will take up the committee’s work at its January meeting, and we will share our vision for the future with alumni and friends in the 2015-2016 academic year.

Guiding all we do is a student-centered mission. As primary stakeholders in what we accomplish, our students have already benefited from the first full year’s use of our new academic facilities. But we are not done yet. We’re looking at other improvements that will solidify SCO’s strengths in the increasingly competitive landscape for optometric education.

We’re heartened by increased engagement with our alumni, including a noticeable amount of participation by recent graduates at this year’s Fall Homecoming Weekend. We’ve made great strides in improving the relationship between our alumni and the institution. Your ideas and feedback are appreciated, and we use your input to help measure your enthusiasm for what we endeavor to accomplish.

Your financial support is especially vital to sustaining the upward trajectory we’ve achieved in recent years. Your gifts enable us to recruit top students and provide rigorous academic/clinical training programs that will benefit optometry when these students join the profession as top-trained optometric physicians. These are your future partners…the providers of care for the patients you have seen throughout your entire professional careers.

Our determination to continue the quest toward recognition as the undis-puted best college of optometry may seem like a lofty goal, but no institution ever achieved greatness by settling for the status quo. Success requires investing the time, energy and vision to achieve the high standards we’ve strategically embraced. We hope that you are proud of the institutional dreams that you have helped make a reality. You will always be a part of us…and we will always be a part of you. Thank you for supporting our mission throughout 2014 and into the New Year.

SCO Acquires New Mobile UnitLocal Foundation Supports SCO’s Progress

SCO’s progress outlined in this Annual Report edition has seen considerable local support from The Plough Foundation in Memphis. In addition to supporting the campaign that helped con-struct SCO’s new academic facility, Plough’s support also helped the college launch a new community-based program to provide eyecare to seniors at community centers or places of worship.

Thanks to Plough’s support, SCO will reach the public even more through a newly acquired mobile eye exam unit from S.A.V.E. (School Advocates for Vision and Education). The nonprofit organization was founded by Henry Lindeman and his wife, Amy, in 2008 to increase access of services for children who often failed to follow up for needed care detected by in-school vision screenings.

Prior to October’s acquisition, the unit was funded by sup-port from The Plough Foundation, with SCO providing doctor coverage through a collaboration with S.A.V.E. Under the transfer agreement, SCO will operate the unit and rebrand it as the clinical program’s “MobilEyes” program.

“S.A.V.E.’s mission has always been to provide access to eye health and vision care services for schoolchildren in Shelby County,” said Christine Weinreich, director of corporate and foundation relations at SCO. “SCO has enjoyed a working relation-ship with S.A.V.E. since its inception, and our dynamic, expanding community outreach pro-grams have enabled us to absorb the operation and expand its potential.”

The mobile unit, a customized recreational vehicle with two exam rooms and a children’s optical dispensary, has provided on-site vision

care in conjunction with the clinical programs of SCO at Shelby County schools since 2009. SCO plans to continue the work of S.A.V.E. and further increase the number of Shelby County residents benefiting from the mobile unit by expanding its reach to additional schools, public health fairs, senior and other programs.

For the next several months, SCO will send doctors out into the community with the unit three days per week to provide eye health and vision care to residents who need it most. SCO antici-pates increasing the mobile care unit’s use to five days per week in 2015.

“The transition, one supported by The Plough Foundation, will continue these much needed services to area children and to the additional people who will be served by the increased capacity brought on by SCO’s amplified involvement,” said James E. Venable, OD ’89, SCO’s Vice President for Clinical Programs.

SCO is additionally grateful to The Plough Foundation for its support of other notable initiatives throughout 2014, including the new Community-Based Care for Aging Memphians program. Plough’s support marks the college’s second largest patient care

grant ever, and the largest grant for community-based care.

The program launched in the fall and will continue next year as it provides comprehensive exams, glasses and disease care to approxi-mately 600 patients aged 60 and older in varied community settings such as churches and senior centers in exchange for their participation in surveys and exam data collection. The data will be used to assess best practices to assist patients where the need is greatest. The Plough Foundation’s support has

enabled SCO to expand patient care and clinical training encounters for interns.

6 | SCOVISIONS

The most recent fiscal year coincided with the

first full academic year’s use of SCO’s recently

constructed academic expansion. At year’s

end, SCO’s leadership team was working with

Board of Trustees members to develop the col-

lege’s next five-year strategic plan to guide the

institution through the year 2020.

As you’ll see in this Annual Report section, the college has been energized by the for-

ward momentum that led to our new campus improvements. SCO saw significant increases

in the clinical training opportunities brought about by an expanded outreach presence.

Coupled with an emphasis on service learning, our students are engaged and more

aware of the impact that optometry can make in our communities. Your involvement with

SCO plays an important part as we carry out our mission. Your support and

enthusiasm strengthen SCO’s commitment to our pursuit of excellence.

For two years in a

row, SCO employee

input resulted in the

college receiving the

Commercial Appeal’s

Top Workplaces

Award.

Educating the best possible healthcare providers is one of the primary components of SCO’s mission. SCO’s students excel at all levels, from board scores to loan repayment ability.

SCO completed its first academic year of use of the college’s new

academic facility, including classrooms, pre-clinical labs, study areas

and a new research suite of offices.

From 787 applicants, SCO enrolled 136 students in the Class of

2018 with a record high average GPA of 3.56 and an outstanding

average OAT score of 328. Both averages were in the top six in

the country, with only two other colleges of optometry having both

averages in the top 6.

SCO’s enrollment is the highest in 32 years at 527; only two

students left last year, at a 0.4% attrition rate.

The Class of 2015 surpassed the 78% national average by achieving

an 86+% passage rate on the Applied Basic Science portion of the

NBEO sequence; the Class of 2014 had an passage rate of 100% on

Part II, the Patient Assessment and Management portion.

The Hayes Center sponsored a number of programs for students,

including Focus on the Future, in which first-year students hear ODs

address various modes of practice, in addition to providing practice

management resources to aid students in their transition to practice.

The Class of 2014 continued the trend of decreasing the average

indebtedness of students at graduation, with three of the last four

years showing decreases in the amount of indebtedness incurred.

The Summer Student Research Fellowship saw 31 students

partcipate in several research projects.

AOA President David Cockrell, OD ’81, and his wife, Cherry Cockrell, are among those who have actively supported SCO’s campaign to improve the college’s academic facilities. Dr. Cockrell recently toured our new facilities when he visited to speak to a campus-wide assembly in SCO’s new classrooms.

SCO encourages lifelong learning, principles that our students will carry into their practice and careers. From special programs to incorporating new technology, SCO promotes meaningful opportunities designed to help our graduates succeed.

SCO opened a new satellite clinic on the University of

Memphis campus to provide interns with exposure to

younger and different subsets of patient encounters.

Providing interns with a model for success, The Eye

Center has seen a total growth rate of 35% in billable

patient encounters over the past seven years.

SCO’s research funding doubled thanks to significant

grants from Allergan and Alcon.

The Hayes Center worked with externship preceptors

to encourage better extern understanding of practice

management modules, particularly at private practice

externship sites.

A $15,000 grant from the Hayes Family Foundation

launched the first Hayes Center Practice of Excellence

Award.

The inaugural Resident’s Weekend was held in

June with all residents delivering COPE-approved

presentations.

New CE programs included a revitalized online CE

program, a destination CE event in New Orleans and a

program focused on new technologies in the manage-

ment of ocular surface disease.

SCO’s Information Services department has

assisted in creating a smartphone app for

the Externship program to enable students

to select their ideal extern rotations and to

record patient encounters and other reporting

capabilities.

Dr. Zakiya Nicks, SCO’s Community Outreach Coordinator, presented copies of “Arthur’s Eyes” and “The Big Book of Family Eye Care” to Diane Jalfon, Executive Director of the Memphis Library Foundation, in appreciation of the library supporting SCO’s new “See to Read” program.

SCO’s commitment to service continues to expand. The college’s outreach programs grew significantly over the last year, benefiting patients and student education alike, yet also providing our faculty and staff the opportunity to participate and witness firsthand the positive impact made by serving others.

Over 50 events were coordinated by the Community Outreach

Program.

SCO is providing full eye exams and follow-up services to nearly

1,800 children at the Achievement School District schools in the

Frayser neighborhood of Memphis. It’s Tennessee’s first in-school

program to provide every child in a specific school system with

access to eye care, regardless of income or insurance status.

A 2014 Healthy Eyes Healthy People grant funded a new

“See to Read Vision Awareness” program held at two Memphis

Library branches.

Notable community partners included Community Alliance for the

Homeless, Convoy of Hope and Friends for Life, with additional

outreach efforts held at Memphis Grizzlies games.

Jigna Patel, ’15, received one of five awards for students in higher

education in Tennessee provided by the Harold Love Outstanding

Community Service Fund.

SCO’s recognition included President Phillips being named to

Memphis Magazine’s list of the top 100 most influential leaders,

the Commercial Appeal naming SCO one of the top workplaces

in Memphis, the Memphis Business Journal naming SCO’s new

academic facility as a finalist for its “Top Building Awards,” and

numerous faculty award recognitions.

Three Saturday Service Experience events provided students and

other volunteers with the opportunity to work with providing

eyecare to patients from the Synergy Treatment Centers.

T

Service Through LeadershipIN ADDITION TO SERVING AS CHAIR OF SCO’S DEPARTMENT OF OPTOMETRIC

EDUCATION, BART CAMPBELL, OD ’87, HAS MADE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO

THE PROFESSION OF OPTOMETRY AS A MEMBER OF THE ACCREDITATION COUNCIL

ON OPTOMETRIC EDUCATION (ACOE). HE WAS APPOINTED AS ACOE CHAIR IN

2011 AND SUBSEQUENTLY REAPPOINTED EACH YEAR SINCE THEN. IN THIS Q&A

INTERVIEW, DR. CAMPBELL PROVIDES INSIGHT INTO HIS ACOE SERVICE DATING BACK

TO THE 1990S AND THE ACOE’S WORK TO SUPPORT HIGH STANDARDS THAT BENEFIT

THE PROFESSION OF OPTOMETRY.

sco.edu | 31

Q: How long have you been a member of the ACOE?A: I was initially appointed as a member of ACOE in July 2009. Appointment as a member of ACOE is actually separate from being ap-pointed as chair. Member appointments are for three-year terms, with a maximum limit of three terms. I was reappointed for a second term as a member in July 2012.

Q: How did you first become involved with ACOE?A: My involvement with ACOE began in the 1990s. My first role with ACOE was as an ac-creditation site visitor – termed a “consultant” by ACOE – on evaluation site visits to residency programs. Apparently someone thought that I did a good job, because I got asked to go on many subsequent site visits, and eventually I was named as a “senior residency consultant,” meaning that I led the site visits.

Q: For ODs who may not be as familiar with the ACOE, how would you define the purpose and value that ACOE provides to optometry?A: ACOE’s official mission statement is “The ACOE serves the public by establishing, main-taining and applying standards to ensure the academic quality and continuous improve-ment of optometric education that reflects the contemporary practice of optometry. The scope of the ACOE encompasses professional op-tometric degree programs, optometric resi-dency programs, and optometric technician programs.”

ACOE is recognized by the U.S. Depart-ment of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as an accreditor of Doctor of Optometry degree pro-grams, optometric residency programs, and optometric technician programs. In a nut-shell, ACOE ensures that all programs that it accredits meet a certain level of quality. This provides assurance to the public (potential stu-dents and their families) and the profession that a graduate of these programs has completed an educational program that has undergone rigorous external review by an impartial third party whose policies and procedures have been reviewed by USDE and CHEA.

The Accreditation Council on Optometric Education has eleven members. Eight are op-tometrists, two are non-optometrist “public” members and one member is an optometric technician. Of the eight members who are op-tometrists, three are practitioners nominated

by the American Optometric Association, two are practitioners with experience serving on state boards nominated by the Association of Regulatory Boards of Optometry, and three are optometric educators nominated by the Asso-ciation of Schools and Colleges of Optometry.

Q: What have been some of the biggest challenges faced by the ACOE?

A: Certainly a big challenge is coping with the significant increase in the number of programs accredited by ACOE. While new O.D. degree programs attract all the attention, the increase in the number of optometric residency programs nationwide has been much more significant in terms of increased workload for the ACOE and its staff.

All members of the Council are volunteers, and the work consumes significant amounts of personal time. Our meetings are typically three to four days in length, but preparation for the meetings involves a great deal of reading and analysis beforehand. In addition, Council mem-bers also serve on site visits to programs, which require a significant amount of preparation, report writing, and time away from home. Ac-complishing our mission while not overtaxing our very dedicated volunteer members is a con-tinuing challenge.

Q: What have been the biggest achievements that you would cite for the ACOE in recent years?

A: ACOE has recently developed and adopted a set of accreditation standards for the evaluation of new optometric degree programs. Prior to the adoption of these standards, the Council had adapted its standards used for the evaluation of existing programs for use when evaluating potential new programs. Shortly after I became chair, I became convinced that we could improve upon this process. After more than a year of development, including review of comments from various segments of the profession, the new standards were adopted and went into effect at the beginning of 2014.

Q: What are the most notable changes or differences in the work that the ACOE has been doing since your involvement?

A: The adoption of the accreditation stan-dards designed for the evaluation of potential new O.D. degree programs is, by far, the most notable change of difference.

Q: How would you describe the standards currently applied by ACOE?A: The accreditation standards for each of the three types of programs that we accredit are very comprehensive in nature and are, them-selves, continuously evaluated through ACOE’s Quality Assurance Committee. Programs must continuously demonstrate that they meet the standards. In addition to regularly scheduled site visits, all accredited programs must pre-pare annual reports that are evaluated by the Council. Site visits may be scheduled at shorter than normal intervals if the Council determines that a program is not or may not be meeting the standards.

Q: How do you feel that serving on the ACOE contributes as service back to the profession, namely, the direct impact on optometry that ACOE involvement brings?A: The direct impact on optometry is, in many ways, very similar to the impact that a faculty member contributes. That is, the real impact comes from the new professionals who each year complete the educational programs ac-credited by ACOE. The Council plays a very real role in ensuring that those programs provide an education that enables those new professionals to have careers during which they not only contribute strength to the profession but also outstanding care to the public.

Q: When your service to the ACOE ends, what will your take away be, meaning, how will your service have contributed to your professional growth or impacted you on a more personal level?A: Obviously, I have gained a very thorough knowledge of the process of accreditation itself, including how organizations like ACOE interact with the agencies that oversee them, such as the USDE. I have a much greater understanding of and appreciation for working with the volun-teers that enable ACOE to achieve its mission.

The amount of personal time devoted by my fellow Council members and the many ad-ditional volunteers who participate in accredita-tion site visits each year is staggering. Working with all of these volunteers, providing leader-ship in a way that acknowledges their sacrifice while ensuring that the Council accomplishes its mission, has been an exciting challenge and a source of personal and professional growth for me.
