School Update A Publication of St. Henry Consolidated Local School District
Vol. XXXIII No.1 August/September 2018
Smoke Signals Mrs. Julie Garke, Superintendent
The 2017-2018 school year
was another great year for the
students, staff and community
of the St. Henry school district.
In May, seventy-four students
graduated with the class of
2018. Seventy students
(78.3%) intend to continue
their education beyond high
school with forty-one students
pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree,
sixteen students pursuing a
two-year Associate’s Degree,
and one student attending a
proprietary school. Fourteen students are already employed
or seeking employment. One senior has joined the U.S.
Marine Corp and one student has joined the Army Reserves
and will be attending education beyond high school. Thirty-
six of the graduates were successful in securing financial
assistance based on merit to further their education.
Scholarships based on academic and athletic talent totaled
more than $1,142,788.
We had several state appearances this past year.
Congratulations to the St. Henry varsity girls’ and boys’
cross country teams as they competed at the state cross
country meet in Division III. The girls placed thirteenth and
the boys placed sixteenth out of twenty teams. The high
school also qualified for state band competition this year.
They received a superior rating at state contest at Findlay.
The bowling team finished 3rd at state. Great job by all
students and coaches!

Leaving our school district at the end of last school year for
retirement purposes were Karen Barlage, 4th grade teacher,
and John Dorner, 8th grade and high school science teacher.
Maria Hickey, German teacher, has accepted another
position. We wish them good luck and thank them for their
service. We will also keep Sharon Rose in our memories as
she served our district as a custodian and cook for twenty-
five years.
The month of August brings many back to school
preparations for students and staff. I would like to sincerely
thank our maintenance and custodial crew for their hard
work and dedication to their jobs this summer. The staff
has been working hard to get the buildings ready for the first
day and the place looks great!
This year we are welcoming the following new staff
members: Mara Alexander, Shelby Miller, Alex Stammen
and Lois Thobe. Mara will be teaching Kindergarten.
Shelby will be teaching Spanish. Alex will be teaching 8th
grade Science and Pre-Algebra. Lois will be the night
custodian for the district. Welcome Mara, Shelby, Alex and
Lois!
Our first day for K-12 students is Wednesday, August 22,
2018. An exciting year has been planned for our students
and our hope is that you are ready to be “Back to School.”
GO SKINS!
St. Henry Schools is in need of bus drivers. We
still have 2 regular bus routes open as well as a
need for substitute bus drivers who could drive
when it works in their schedule. If you are looking
to earn some extra money while helping the
school out, please contact Sherri Ranly at 419-
678-4834 ext. 2101 or email
From the Board of Education
It seems like just yesterday we were handing out diplomas
to the Class of 2018. The teachers, staff, and administrative
team have once again prepared our students for the world in
front of them. Our school system thrives because of the
awesome support it receives from our community. The
support, parenting, family unit and pride in community play
a huge roll in the students’ ability to learn. Thank you to all.
In just a few short weeks we will start another school year!
Retirements and life changes took some great employees
from our ranks, but fear not we have been blessed with the
addition of new members with solid character and skills.
We congratulate those moving on and welcome those
joining us.
Good luck to all of the students starting their new grade
level. Do your best!
Good luck to all of our fall sports and extra-curricular teams
and groups. You represent your school, community and
family both on and off the field. High school students lead
by example, you are role models for the student body!
Enjoy the rest of the summer.

GET REAL 2018-1019
“ALL IN”
To kick off the middle school’s 2018-2019 Get REAL
event, students in grades 5-8 will hear a presentation from
Gian Paul Gonzalez on Friday, September 7th. The Get
REAL theme for this school year will reflect Mr.
Gonzalez’s message of being “All In”. Below is a bit of
background on Mr. Gonzalez from an excerpt taken from
GDA Speakers.
During the New York Giants’ 2011 Super Bowl run, much
of their inspiration is attributed to Gian Paul Gonzalez
(pronounced John-Paul). Prior to the Giant’s Christmas
Eve game with the NY Jets, Gonzalez delivered the now
famous “ALL IN” rally cry message during the Giants’
chapel service and is now widely recognized as having
inspired the New York Giants to their Super Bowl victory
and was featured on ESPN on Super Bowl Sunday, and
has had notable appearances on Fox News, ABC and
CNN. He has traveled across the nation as a motivational
speaker for the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers, to the Army
Cadets at West Point, United States Air Force, Sam’s
Club, Patch.com, PNC Bank, DSW Shoes as well as many
other corporate, athletic, government agencies, and
educational institutions.
We are excited to hear Gian Paul’s inspirational message
about commitment, a concept that can be applied to all
aspects of our lives. To learn more about Mr. Gonzalez,
feel free to visit
https://www.gdaspeakers.com/speaker/gian-paul-gonzalez/
or watch one of his presentations at

GO SKINS!!! News from the bus stop Mrs. Sherri Ranly
It is that time of year again! Summer
activities are coming to an end and
the school year is here! This also
means the big yellow buses will soon
be back on the road again. With this
in mind, it is important that motorists pay particular
attention to the school buses. Student safety is our drivers’
#1 priority, and we need motorists to help us out! Please
remember that the amber (yellow) warning lights are to
show that a bus is approaching a student stop. The red
lights mean motorists MUST stop and wait until the
school bus proceeds forward. A school bus driver must
report when a vehicle runs the red lights, which can lead to
a citation for the motorist. We all need to do our part to
keep our children safe!
Routes are somewhat similar to last year, with some
changes to balance loads and accommodate the new
kindergarten schedule. Bus routes are in the final stages of
preparation. You should receive information by mail
regarding your child’s route sometime in early to mid-
August. If you have not received the information by Friday,
August 17, please let us know.
The drivers at St. Henry Schools take pride in the
transportation of children to and from school and
extracurricular activities in the safest way possible.
Please call 419-678-4834 ext. 2101 with any concerns.
Parents: Again like last year, we ask you to please refrain
from sending your child home with a friend on a bus they
do not typically ride. In the past this has created an
overcrowding problem on our buses and we need to avoid
this situation. Special circumstances will be considered
with a note to the office. Thank you!
REMINDER:
If attending any type of activity at the Middle/High School,
we request you not park on Columbus St./Kenneth Dr.
where the curb is painted yellow. This area is for the safety
of the pedestrians crossing the street and the visibility of
vehicles exiting the Middle/High School parking lot and
Kenneth Dr. This is more of an issue during evening
activities. Thank you!

to another in the St. Henry School district? If yes, please
call the Census Officer, Sherri Ranly, at 419-678-4834, ext.

Schools predict future enrollment forecasts. We need good
projections to plan for teachers, classroom space, and
supplies.
Booster Athletic Complex Update Mr. Eric Huelskamp
As planned, the School Board and Booster Club met at the
end of the school year to discuss the status of the new
Athletic Complex. It was discussed that donations
significantly slowed down. Booster savings, pre-approved
loan, and donations combined remained slightly over $1M.
It was decided to redesign for budget restraints. Emphasis
was given to not reduce the functionality of the building,
particularly the number of courts.
After several meetings with Garmann /Miller, Crawford
Hoying, and local contractors a new design was completed
mid-July. The weight room was moved to the first level
eliminating the second level, the front entrance and exterior
designs were more modest, the sprinkler system was
eliminated, and the storage area was reduced. Estimates are
still being gathered for the redesign, but the outcome should
be very encouraging.
Once estimates are gathered, the Boosters plan to host a
series of small group meetings to share the new plans. The
boosters will provide materials and information to group
leaders. The leaders will then present to 10-15 of their
acquaintances. We hope this will give the opportunity for
any questions/concerns to be addressed.
Please reach out to the Boosters if you want to participate
(as leader or guest) to the group meetings, to purchase a
truck ticket, or would like more information about the
complex. Visit us at our website (www.shboosterclub.com)
and on Facebook. The website has information about the
complex as well as online payment options. The Booster
email is [email protected].
Thanks for your continued support!!
Café Terminal 2018/19: New online payment option for Lunch Fees
St. Henry Schools will be launching a new electronic
payment option for lunch fees beginning in the 2018-2019
school year. St. Henry Schools is excited about giving
parents the ability to manage their child’s meal account over
the internet using Payschoolscentral.com. Say goodbye to
sending cash and checks to the school for lunch fees.
PaySchoolsCentral.com allows parents to create a secure
online account where you can add money to your child's
account with your Visa or MasterCard credit card or via
electronic check. This new technology benefits the school,
the parents, and the students. Parents will no longer have to
worry about money not reaching the school or their child
running out of money. Students do not have to worry about
having money to pay for their meals.
Parents can sign up for a Payschoolscentral.com account
beginning in August. Once the account is activated they can
start taking advantage of all the features
Payschoolscentral.com offers including:
• Set up recurring payments so they don’t have to
worry about their child not having money
• Parents can see their children’s balances on the
main screen
• Set up email reminders so they know when their
child’s account is getting low
• Convenience of depositing money 24 hours a day,
7 days a week
• Parents can see what their children are purchasing
during lunch
• Online step by step tutorials on how to use
Payschoolscentral.com
• A safe and secure environment
Cash and checks will still be accepted in the School offices
for lunch fees.
PaySchoolsCentral.com will provide an option for those
parents seeking a secure online payment option. More
information and instructions for how to set up an account
will be distributed to families in August.

School Bus Safety Tips: Prepare to stop when a slowing bus has its overhead yellow lights
flashing.
Stop at least 20 feet away from buses when red lights are flashing, unless driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway.
Slow down in or near school and residential areas.
Look for clues – such as safety patrols, crossing guards, bicycles
and playgrounds – that indicate children might be in the area.
Watch for children between parked cars and other objects.
Use additional caution in bad weather.
