2.2 Catering to Student Diversity 2.2.1 The institution assesses the learning levels of the students, after admission and organises special
programs for advanced learners and slow learners
Response:
We all are well known about the fact that every individual has a unique capability of displaying his skillsand qualities. So is with learning skills. To evaluate the outcome of learning it’s important to access thecapability of the learners so that effective instructions could be delivered accordingly. The entire collegefaculty is very sensitive towards the need and requirements of the students. The students who are interestedin admission apply online through a prescribed application form. Those application forms give some basicidea of student education, their socioeconomic status, and their intelligence level this is the first phase ofevaluating the knowledge and skill of students prior to admission. The entrance test is the second phase ofevaluating the student's knowledge and skill. After admission, an orientation program is organized byrespective departments before the commencement of the classes so that they are familiarized with thecollege environment as well as the course contents. As a component of classroom teaching RamadayaluSingh College includes subjective assessment of understanding and learning capacity of students.During the first few days of class work, concerned teachers devote their time to access students interms of their academic background, the pace of learning, aptitude, interest, personality, motivationand career aspirations. This initial informal interaction and subjective assessment by teachers helpsto identify slow and advanced learners. To reduce the gap of knowledge and skill between slow learnersand advanced learners, an appropriate learning environment and special support programs like remedialclasses, counseling and special teaching-learning methods are adopted for slow learners. Tutorialclasses are the part of the time table to clarify doubts and re-explaining of important topics, based on theneed of students. In order to improve their performance faculty members also provide course notes, university question banks and discuss the way of presenting the answer to score high marks in exams.Asmost of our students are from a rural background and their medium of education is Hindi, so mostly we useHindi or bilingual instruction mediums for the convenience of students. Those students who are poor in

English, our language lab assists them to improve their English with the help of software like wordsworth as it is part of that lab. The counseling cell also plays an important role in improving learning skill. The counselors monitor academic performance and interact frequently to understand and assist anystudent with issues that affect their ability to learn.
As advance learners have high aspiration for acquiring more knowledge, such students are encouraged tobe members of professional bodies like CSI and organize technical events. They advised participating ingroup discussions, technical quizzes and other academic activities to develop analytical and problem-solving abilities in them and thereby to improve their presentation skills. They are encouraged to take upmore projects to inculcate research orientation and practical awareness so they can spend more time inlibraries and laboratories and given access to various resources.

Response:
The basic idea of a college must be student-centric. During their learning process, they participate invarious academic activities inside and outside the classrooms. The course curriculum followed by ourcollege encourages experimental learning and is as per University guidelines. The guiding principle ofexperimental learning is to link theory with practice. By experimental learning process students getacquainted with various apparatus and how to operate them, they learn how to evaluate the experimentaloutcome and draw conclusions. They also learn through various assignments, field work, trainingprograms and extension activities. To broaden the student horizon they are encouraged to go oneducational trips to other institutions, historical places, and field visits, especially for vocationalstudents. The departments organize seminars, symposia, and talks by subject experts to enhance theirinsight, gain perspectives and have their doubts clarified. We also follow the same strategy in theclassrooms too and the end of each class is followed by open discussion sessions in which students freelyask their question and discuss their problems. The college has other learning resources like libraries, computer centers with internet access, e-resources that encourage students in participative learning andmotivate them to use various problem-solving methodologies. Bodies like NCC, NSS and culturecommittee are very active in our college and their volunteers actively participated in various community-based services with NGOs and also with government organizations. This exposure can be used to aware thesociety and remove social misconception & practices that still prevails in our society such as femalefeticide, anti-dowry campaign, national integration, etc. The cultural committees encourage students toparticipate in activities like debate, discussion, presentation, role play, Nukkar Natak and otheractivities. All these activities promote participative learning among students.

2.3.4 Innovation and creativity in teaching-learning
Response:
Innovation and creativity are two words that are often discussed in higher education today. It is true that weare still stuck in traditional methods of teaching. Undoubtedly they are equally important but the additionof more innovations and creativity in teaching could take us towards excellence. For this reason, ourcollege is continuously focusing on the implementation of new methods to improve the teaching-learningprocess. Teachers of college promote creative methods while teaching. Teachers generally try not to berestricted to the lecture method. Use of board, brainstorming, outside classroom teaching are somecommon strategies that are incorporated in our teaching process. Usage of social media is quite prevalentin our college where students are always in touch with faculties and discuss their academic issues.Faculties also share e-resources like e-books, articles, etc. to help students combat syllabus relatedproblems.
Learning is another name of exploring and exploration comes along observation of related concepts andobjects. This college encourages field visit for students to explore the depth of related subjects as infusingreal-world experiences into your curriculum makes teaching more effective and enriched. Regular fieldvisits and educational trips have been organized by the related department every year to create interest inlearning among students. Postgraduate students are encouraged to attend seminars and workshops.Recently four students from the department of psychology had attended one week workshop on statisticsand research methodology at MMMUT, Gorakhpur.
Use of labs in the teaching-learning process has always been a preferential way to accelerate teaching. Thiscollege promotes the use of different labs to incorporate advancement in teaching. For instance, theintroduction of the language lab in the Department of English. Language labs’ interactive courses helpstudents learn much faster than in a regular classroom setting. The methodology of the classroomlanguage network uses a progressive model to promote natural learning, where students learn the differentconcepts of language in an intuitive way. The language lab boosts the motivation of students achieving

2.5 Evaluation Process and Reforms 2.5.1 Reforms in Continuous Internal Evaluation(CIE) system at the institutional level
Page 33/96 02-08-2019 04:17:32
Self Study Report of RAM DAYALU SINGH COLLEGE
Response:
Continuous Internal evaluation is a process by which one can assess whether the learning outcomes havebeen achieved or not. The internal evaluation process in our college starts from the commencement of thenew session every year. Initially, students are evaluated on the basis of their classroom interactions andperformances and are segregated into slow learners and fast learners to put them in different sections.Special assistance like remedial classes, counseling, tutorial classes and other help as needed isprovided to slow learners to bridge the knowledge gap. A written test is organized to evaluate the outcomeof these assistance programs and reforms are made in teaching-learning strategies if needed. Fast learnersare also marked and they are encouraged by the faculty to take innovative projects and othercompetitive programs and activities organized by the college. Our college insists on extensive use ofICT so that student can learn and understand the subject better. Many short term courses like spokenEnglish, phonetics and pronunciations, computer literacy, and Amanat Chakbandi are introduced. These courses act as add-on courses and are also used as a mode of assessment for students through aseries of tests. Our University (B.R.A.Bihar University) has introduced the modalities of conductingcontinuous internal evaluation (CIE) at colleges for post-graduate degrees. Several reforms have beenmade in the credit score in the last five years based on the types of programs. In 2014 credit of internalassessment was increased from 20% to 30% by the University. Later in 2016, the credit score for practicalpapers was increased to 50%.
Each department prepares its own details on how to carry out the CIE for each paper as per the Universityguidelines. Students are evaluated on the basis of their punctuality, discipline, laboratory performancethroughout their academic session. They are also evaluated on the basis of presentations made inseminars, for both power point and poster presentation. The assignment is a good way to developperspectives and research about topics. While writing an assignment, students refer to various books, usescholarly articles and publications on the internet to get a better understanding of the subject. Power pointand poster presentations are a robust way to explain and elaborate on various topics.
University is also trying to made reforms in evaluation strategies for graduate-level programs. In 2014 theyhave introduced semester system for Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) program, and from2019-20 sessions, they are introducing the semester system in Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA)program as well.

2.5.2 Mechanism of internal assessment is transparent and robust in terms of frequency and variety
Response:
Evaluation in a continuous and transparent mode would help students to improve their academicperformance. Internal assessment is a part of the evaluation process of our college. In the orientationprogram organized at the beginning of each academic session, the students are informed about internal
Page 34/96 02-08-2019 04:17:32

assessment schedule. The criteria of internal assessment are adopted as per University guideline. Intheoretical papers, 30% marks are assigned to internal assessment, while for practical distribution ofmarks is 50 % for both internal and external assessment. To ensure transparency in such process ourinstitution is implementing a variety of innovative approaches to assess student’s subject understanding. The process of internal assessment starts with classroom interactions. While delivering lectures, student’s subject understanding, regularity, conduct, and behavior is closely monitored and observedby the faculty. Other common practices adopted by our institution are conducting tests and preparatoryexams at frequent intervals. Answer sheets are made available to the students on demand to ensuretransparency. Seminars with the open question-answer session, assigning individual projects, deliveryof assignments through the model and poster presentation, power point presentation followed byopen interaction with faculty members are conducted to ensure the attainment of course outcome.Projects, poster and model preparation encourage independent learning; likewise, seminars andpower point presentation inculcate digital literacy as well as communication and presentation skills.Marks of academic performances along with assignments are systematically recorded and incorporated intothe internal assessment. All the information regarding tests, assignments, and marks obtained aredisplayed on the notice board for the student’s reference. In the case of absentee, information regardingsuch test is conveyed to students through telephone. The Head of departments is fully empowered toconduct tests again under legitimate circumstances to bring such students at par in the evaluation system. All the grievances related to internal assessment are acknowledged at the departmental level andtaken care of by the Head of department/coordinators of the concern departments and outcomes aredisplayed on the notice board.

2.5.3 Mechanism to deal with examination related grievances is transparent, time-bound andefficient
Response:
The written examination has become an integral part of the educative process in every program ofeducation and plays an important role in determining honors, graduation, post graduation, certification, placement, and promotion. It allow students to convey their understandings about the subject, helps topolish their writing skills, helps to improve their analytical skills, and also helps to express their thoughtcoherently. So, our college has a separate examination control section which co-ordinates the internalexam, tests and different other assignments which is the part of CIE as well as peaceful conduction of theuniversity exams. The examination committee headed by the examination controller addresses all theexamination related grievances in a very efficient manner. Examination dates are announced by the B.R.B.University is notified in the newspaper as well as the information also sends via emails to every college. Ifthere are any changes in dates, they are notified it in the same way. The college examination committeenotifies the date of examination on the notice board of the examination department for the information ofstudents. University issues admit cards and send them to the respective colleges and the collegeexamination committee passes them to the concerned departments from where they are collected by thestudents. The center of examination is already mentioned in the admit cards as it is allocated by theUniversity. The college along with the examination committee ensures peaceful examination process

7.1.5 Waste Management steps including:• Solid waste management • Liquid waste management• E-waste management
Response:
Waste Management
R. D. S College strives to properly manage and dispose the waste generated inside the campus. For this, firstly we have started the practice of waste segregation. Initially there was no such concept, but slowlypeople are being made aware of benefits of segregating waste at initial generation point. For facilitatingwaste segregation, separate dustbins have been installed in the campus for solid, liquid and biodegradablewaste.
Solid Waste Management
The major solid waste generated by the campus are paper waste, tree droppings (foliage), waste from lawnand field management, plastic, glass, wood, metals, leftover food etc. The waste is segregated at each levelby the safai karmachaaris (sweepers/cleaners). Efforts are made to reuse and assimilate the wooden andmetal waste by the college itself in construction or repair works. Old newspapers are sold to vendorsauthorized by the college which is then sent for recycling. The rest of the wastes are taken away by theauthorized vendors to the government designated landfills of the city.
E-waste management
Page 85/96 02-08-2019 04:17:46
Self Study Report of RAM DAYALU SINGH COLLEGE
Till date very little e-waste is generated by the college. Defective computers, laptops, cartridges areproperly stored for repair or disposal. For technology up gradation buy back options are used, i.e., newdevices are purchased in place of defective or outdated electronic devices. The college has also decided tocontact approved e-waste collection agencies in near future.
7.1.6 Rain water harvesting structures and utilization in the campus
Response:
Rain water harvesting has become precarious for our aquifers, if we want to have fresh water all the yearround. Average rain fall in Muzaffarpur is reported to be 1190mm. The area of college is 206390 m2.Approximately 24 crore liter of rain water is received annually as downpour. Rain water received onconstructed roof are collected through over flow pipes which open in collection ducts/chhanels. Thesechannels lead to three ponds where rain water gets collected. Around 20% collected water is lost due toevaporation. The water thus collected helps in ground water recharging. The collected water is also usedfor fish farming. Thus the rain water harvesting is also a source of extra revenue for the college. The pondsare leased to authorized persons year wise and fish farming is extensively practiced.
7.1.7 Green Practices• Students, staff usinga) Bicyclesb) Public Transportc) Pedestrian friendly roads• Plastic-free campus• Paperless office• Green landscaping with trees and plants

Institutional Best Practices
1.Clean and green campus
In recent times, it is imperative that the responsibility of sustainable development or green way of livingshould be shared by one and all. Sustainable development cannot be achieved in isolation from the closerelationship between higher education and its institutions namely universities and colleges. These centersof learning are an essential pillar of society, because they play a pivotal role in elevating awarenessregarding social responsibility among students, staff members and employees. We at R. D. S. College takesocial responsibility very seriously and make every possible effort to make our campus green and alsopractice sustainability in our daily action.
Objectives of the Practice
1.To make our campus green and clean;2.To create awareness regarding environment crisis;3.To educate student that responsibility of making sustainable way of living a reality is ours alone;4.To make our students, responsible citizen by making them understand the concept of sustainability;
and5.To contribute in whatever way possible towards reducing carbon footprint.
The Context
Page 91/96 02-08-2019 04:17:48
Self Study Report of RAM DAYALU SINGH COLLEGE
The context of the practice is realization of the fact the students along with the teachers should own up thefact that recent climatic crisis is very real. Creating awareness regarding this of utmost importance andhence practicing green and clean campus is one of the many ways through which we can instill in ourstudents and employees the concept of sustainable living.
The Practice
For practicing green and clean campus we regularly conduct certain events, programmes and lectures forstudents, teachers and other staffs, such as:
Tree plantations - tree plantation events are regularly organized at important events, for e.g. earthday, annual day of college, retirement of any employee of the college etc. Our college boasts ofdense foliage and has a variety of herbs, shrubs, trees and even medicinal plants.Waste Segregation – we practice waste segregation in our college and wastes are properly disposedoff at proper government authorized points. No Vehicle Day – the college observes no vehicle day twice a week whereby no private vehicles ofstudents, teachers and staff are allowed inside the campus. Public transportation is encouragedMost of the official notices are sent on social media platform like Whatsapp and Facebook.Lectures, seminars and workshops are organized regularly emphasizing the importance of greenpractices and sustainable development.College also has a green audit team which regularly holds audit of trees, plants, energy resourcesetcSwachhta abhiyan is regularly practiced under the aegis of NSS in campus and the surroundingareas.Rain water harvesting is also practiced. College also has two large ponds where rain water getscollected and pisciculture (fish farming) is practiced.Solar panels have been constituted for running Wi-Fi machinery in college.Compost bins have also been installed.
Evidence of Success
The practice is highly successful as is evidenced from very clean and green campus. We have lush greentrees all around our campus and it is very well maintained. The green audit team has kept record of numberof trees, herbs and shrubs in our campus. Waste segregation is practiced on a daily basis. Alternate sourceof energy is also used in our campus.
Problems Encountered and Resources Required
Not much problem is encountered in maintaining green and clean campus. Some minor problems such asproper time of waste disposal, getting plant saplings on time, are encountered. Also on no vehicle day, thecollege gate observes huge traffic jam because no vehicles are allowed inside the campus
1.Adoption of Slum
Page 92/96 02-08-2019 04:17:48
Self Study Report of RAM DAYALU SINGH COLLEGE
Taking the role of social responsibility a step ahead, R. D. S. College has started the practice of adoptingslums as part of extension activities. Our college through various programmes under NSS, Teachers’Association, etc, frequently visits nearby slum area or school within those areas to understand groundrealities.
Objectives of the Practice
The main aims and objectives of the programme are as follows:
To bring awareness among the slum dwellers on importance of education, legal literacy and otherrelevant issues; To motivate them to be self sufficient; To encourage the spirit of charity and social work among students, teachers and staff members ofthe college; To make the members our college understand the social responsibility, we have towards our fellowcitizen.
The Context
The practice of adopting slums is being encouraged in our college very seriously. This practice makes usaware of the problems that our fellow citizens face on day to day basis. This makes us realize that we havesocial responsibility towards our fellow citizens and it is imperative to do some philanthropic work toameliorate the living condition of people of the slum areas.
The Practice
The college regularly visits nearby slum areas and the schools existing in those slums to frequently assessthe situation. The college has adopted Rajkiya Prathmic Vidyalaya in Bhikanpura, Muzaffarpur. Theteachers’ association along with the Principal regularly visits the school to distribute stationary items, foodpackets, uniform etc. Some teachers also go there in free time to take classes in the school. Under the aegisof NSS, teachers, students, and volunteers visit the slum area of Sadpura and Attardah region ofMuzaffarpur for special campaign on education and health. Through these programmes, not only thepeople of slums are benefitted, the teachers are also encouraged to actively participate in social work andcharity and eventually become philanthropists.
Evidence of Success
The practice is highly successful as is evidenced by the fact that the school which we have adopted ishaving high enrollment. People from far off slum areas are also sending their children to this school. Theteachers and students in that school are now more regular than before. Also, the NSS team is always inhigh demand for organizing social awareness programmes in the slum areas.
