Are you ready for the new sincerity?! Shotgun Jimmie’s new album Transistor Sister 2 is full of genuine pop gems that champion truth and love. Jimmie is joined by long-time collaborators Ryan Peters (Ladyhawk) and Jason Baird (DoMakeSayThink) for this sequel to the Polaris Prize nominated album Transistor Sister from 2011. José Contreras (By Divine Right) produced and recorded the record in Toronto, Ontario at The Chat Chateaux and joins the band on keys.

In characteristic Shotgun Jimmie fashion, the songs on Transistor Sister 2 focus largely on family and friends with a heavy dose of nostalgia. Jimmie’s hyperbolic takes on the everyday reconstruct familiar scenarios, from traffic on the 401 (the beloved and scorned mega-highway through Toronto known to all touring musicians as the place where punctual arrival at soundcheck goes to die) to cooking dinner.

The album’s lead single Cool All the Time is a plea for people to abandon ego and strive for authenticity, featuring contributions by Chad VanGaalen, Steven Lambke and Cole Woods. The New Sincerity serves as the album’s manifesto; it renounces cynicism and promotes positivity.

“hand solo,” “blow,” “conventional ride”—these are just a few of the cheeky offerings off Any Human Friend, the new album from rock provocateur Marika Hackman. “This whole record is me diving into myself and peeling back the skin further and further, exposing myself in quite a big way. It can be quite sexual,” Hackman says. “It’s blunt, but not offensive. It’s mischievous.” There’s also depth to her carnal knowledge: Any Human Friend is ultimately about how, as she puts it, “We all have this lightness and darkness in us.”

Hackman lifted the album’s title from a documentary about four-year-olds interacting with dementia patients in senior homes. At one point, two little girls confer about their experience there, with one musing on how it’s great to make “any human friend,” whether old or young. “When she said that it really touched a nerve in me,” says the London-based musician. “It’s that childlike view where we really accept people, are comfortable with their differences.”

Such introspection has earned Hackman her name. Her folky 2015 debut, We Slept at Last, was heralded for being nuanced and atmospheric. She really found her footing with her last release, I’m Not Your Man—which earned raves from The Guardian, Stereogum, and Pitchfork—and its sybaritic, swaggering hit “Boyfriend,” which boasts of seducing away a straight guy’s girlfriend. “Her tactile lyrics keep the songs melodically strong and full of surprises,” remarked Pitchfork.

“I’m a hopeless romantic,” she explains. “I search for love and sexual experience, but also I’m terrified by it.” Hackman is a Rid of Me-era PJ Harvey for the inclusive generation: unbounded by musical genre, a preternatural lyricist and tunesmith who isn’t afraid to go there. (Even her cover art, which finds Hackman nearly nude while cradling a baby pig, is a nod to Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra’s unfiltered photos of mothers just after they gave birth.) To that end, “hand solo” extorts the virtues of masturbation and features Hackman’s favorite line, “Under patriarchal law, I’m going to die a virgin.” The song “blow” paints a picture of social excess. And “conventional ride” thumbs its nose at heterosexual sex through “the trope a lot of gay women experience: sleeping with someone, then it becomes apparent you’re kind of an experiment.”

Marika wrote the album over a year, recording a few songs at a time with co-producer David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The xx). The longer recording process meant that Hackman had the time to experiment in the studio, especially with electronic songs. She was inspired by Wrench’s vast synth collection, many of which she used throughout Any Human Friend, notably on “hold on,” a deep dive into ennui expressed as ethereal R&B. She also switched up drum rhythms and wrote songs on the bass, such as the upbeat, idiosyncratic “come undone.”

Hackman bookends Any Human Friend with some of her most unexpected musical turns. The first song she wrote, “the one” (technically its second track), is “probably the poppiest song I’ve ever written,” she says. “It’s about that weird feeling of starting the process again from scratch.” To that end, it features a riot grrrl Greek chorus hurling such insults at her as, “You’re such an attention whore!” The title track closes out the album and explores how, “when we’re interacting with people, it’s like holding a mirror up to yourself.” It’s a weightless coda that’s jazz-like in its layering of rhythmic sounds as if you’re leisurely sorting through Hackman’s headspace.

The art form commonly referred to as Latin Jazz is a musical expression of the heart and soul of New York, an exciting reflection of the rhythms and spirit of the city’s merging of Latino and African-American cultures. The music of Bill O’Connell is a product of that environment. Since the 1970’s, when he first joined Mongo Santamaria’s band, O’Connell has continually proven himself not only as a highly skilled pianist, but as an outstanding composer-arranger as well. The Afro Caribbean Ensemble, ACE for short, makes their recording debut on this album and the star-studded roster perform O’Connell’s tricky arrangements with virtuoso aplomb. Houston Person may be one of the few still-active players in the long history of blues-drenched “boss tenors” that stretches back to Gene Ammons, Arnett Cobb, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Bullmoose Jackson and others. Person has long exhibited a keen ear for simpatico musicians, ranging from his classic partnership with Etta Jones, to his series of superb duo encounters with bass master Ron Carter the man chooses his company skillfully. Ofege was formed in the early 1970s by a bunch of teenagers at the St. Gregory’s College in Lagos Nigeria. They were largely influenced by the guitar solos of Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page while closer to home, they were influenced by the music of ‘BLO’ (Berkley Jones, Laolu Akins and Mike Odumosu), ‘Monomono’ (led by Joni Haastrup), The Funkees, and Ofo The Black Company.

Due to their vibrant combo of sweet harmonies, hooks & fuzz, Ofege would become one of the most legendary Nigerian groups of all time, with expressive sales and national stardom. At the turn of the century (and because of tracks appearing on various psychedelic music compilations) Ofege would receive international acknowledgment for being the first of their kind and the ultimate West-African psychedelic funk band!

Their first album (Try and Love – 1973) was recorded while the band members were still in high school (average age of 16). It took some years before other albums saw the light since some band members still had to finish school. Further astonishing recordings include ‘The Last of The Origins’ (1976), ‘Higher Plane Breeze’ (1977) and ‘How Do You Feel’ (1978).

‘Higher Plane Breeze’ (released in 1977 on Polydor Nigeria) is Ofege’s third album and it’s a STRONG one, combining funk and disco influences with Afrobeat and heavy rock guitars. The album provides one of the Nigerian scene’s most iconic images with its cover shot showing one member squatting amongst his bandmates, middle fingers raised high and proud toward the camera.

Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the first reissue of this landmark Nigerian album. This RARE classic (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) is now finally back available as a limited vinyl edition (500 copies) complete with the original artwork and exclusive liner notes/pictures provided by Ofege’s founding member ‘Melvin Ukachi’ who also supervised this reissue.

An African artist, born in Ghana (1945) during the English colonial occupation, Mack Porter moved to the Netherlands and then to Italy in the late 60’s where he released four pop and soul-oriented singles for the small Naples label ‘Fans’. In 1969 he won the Un disco per l’ Europa song contest in Lugano, Switzerland which got him signed to the RiFi label. In 1972 he made a concept album (under the name of Mack Sigis Porter)…this album is the masterpiece that is Peace on You. After his musical career Porter stayed in Italy and became a stylist under the name Mack Squire.

Peace on You was strongly inspired by psychedelic soul influences and progressive atmospheres, with wild guitar solos (and some Hendrix-like vocals), and even some orchestral arrangements. Mack Porter’s only album (featuring many famous Italian guest musicians) is an acclaimed favorite when it comes to African psychedelic rock. Riddled with long folky introductions, funky strings, soulful organ breaks, soft progressive rock, fuzz guitars…combine all of this with Porters sad bluesy voice and you have a unique sounding record that gets more interesting with repeated and concentrated listening.

It was rumored that this rare and expensive album (original copies tend to go for silly money on the second-hand market) only came out on a handful of promo copies…but the sad truth is that this release received no promotion at all and sold in minimal quantities.

This is an underestimated soulful album and Mack Porter is truly a unique artist with an absolute ‘to-the-bone’ musical spirit. Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the reissue of ‘Peace on You’. In 2015, a successful bid of £3,560 (some ₩5 million) was made on a single album on eBay – this was the 1972 original UK press of Folkal Point’s album. This album had remained shrouded in mystery for more than 4 decades without ever being officially reissued, after most of the original material and master tapes were lost to fire and flooding. So how did it come to pass that this album, which featured unassuming music that reflected the trends of its time – modern and traditional folk – became so sought-after?

In the early 1970s, there were three teenagers from Bristol, a port city in south-western England, who played American modern folk songs. The boys – Stuart Amesbury, Mark Steed, and Paul Cook – were offered to play at a school concert. Realizing that none of them could sing properly, they began looking for a singer. They recruited Cherie Musialik, who was recommended to them by a music teacher. After making a successful debut by performing tunes by Tom Paxton, the Seekers, and Bob Dylan, word of the band soon spread to London. A radio appearance by Alan Green of the Midas label led to his producing the band’s album. A total of 500 copies were pressed, with 250 copies going to the band’s members and 250 copies kept in storage by Midas. However, due to the lack of any real promotion, the records had to be sold by the members themselves at concerts. Because of this, they had trouble breaking even, let alone covering the production costs. To make matters worse, the copies that were being stored by Midas were lost forever to fire and flooding, after which the band eventually disappeared from the public eye. However, as word of the album’s beauty gradually spread among collectors, it soon came to be praised as one of the masterpieces of British folk. In addition to traditional British folk songs, this album featured covers of five tunes – Dylan’s ‘You Ain’t Going Nowhere’, Paxton’s ‘Victoria Dines Alone’, Baez’s ‘Sweet Sir Galahad’, Mitchell’s ‘Circle Games’, and ‘Anathea’ by Judy Collins – which have been elegantly arranged without encroaching on the source material. However, what really set this album apart was the million-dollar voice of Cherie Musialik, which has a deeply moving and enchanting quality to rival any of the greats of her time. It’s no exaggeration to say that what could have been an unremarkable work was elevated to greatness by virtue of Musialik’s voice. As the first installation in the British Rare Folk series from Merry Go Round Records, this is the first official reissue to fully recreate the cover design of the original version, including an 8-page insert that is lavishly laid out with lyrics and photos of the band members. Through its reissue, this album has crossed over from the realm of the unknowable to become a welcome part of our lives. How rare it is, to finally regard a legend under a plain light to end up cherishing it even more rather than being disappointed – but this is precisely what this album by Folkal Point achieves.
