What is Slime?Slime is a non-Newtonian fluid. Which really doesn't say much, but first let's look at Isaac Newton he is a scientist who worked in gravity, motion, and fluids.  He did a lot of studies into fluids and their viscosity. What is viscosity? Well, it measures the flow of a liquid. For example, yogurt is thicker than water. Newton also studied the effect that hot and cold can have on fluid. When you freeze water it no longer has any viscosity, and when you leave the yogurt out at room temperature or warm it up it has a similar viscosity to water.

Slime is different though hot or cold doesn't have any effect on slime which is why it is known as a non-Newtonian fluid. Smile reacts to different things. If you lay it in your hand and spread your fingers it will run through them, but if you squeeze your hands around the slime it will contract the polymers and become more like a solid. What does that mean? Polymers are molecules that are linked together to create a long chain together. Glue and plastic are examples of polymers that you are familiar with.

So by definition, slime can come in many different forms and recipes. In order to be classified as slime it must be thicker than a liquid and not be affected by temperature, but reactive to pressure.

Liquid Starch Slime

Materials:1/4 cup Liquid Starch 1/2 cup Elmer's Glue 1/2 cup Water

Procedure:1. In a bowl mix the water and the glue together 2. Add in food coloring, glitter and other add-in's into the glue and water mixture 3. Pour in the liquid starch and stir until the slime starts to form.  4. Knead your slime until the consistency becomes how you desire it to be. It will go from stringy to smooth.

How Does It Work?Liquid Starch Slime is created with two polymers the glue and the liquid starch. The water is essential to ensure this slime doesn't turn into a solid.

Borax Powder SlimeIn Borax slime the slime is created with the linking of the polymers in the glue and the borate ions of borax within the powder.

Materials:1/4 tsp  Borax Powder 1/2 cup Elmer’s Glue 1/2 cup Water

Procedure:1. Add the glue and water to the bowl 2. Add in food coloring, glitter and other add-in's into the glue and water mixture 3. In a separate small bowl, mix 1/2 cup of warm water with 1/4 tsp of borax powder. 4. Pour borax mixture into the bowl with glue and water mixture. 5. Mix until all the liquid is incorporated and slime is in a ball in the bottom of the bowl.

How Does It Work?

Saline Solution SlimeThe saline solution actually contains sodium borate and boric acid which are in the boron family with borax powder. So even though they are different ingredients saline solution slime works the same as the borax powder. With the glue polymers and borate ions creating the slimy texture.

Materials:1/2 cup Elmer's Glue 1/2 cup Water 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda 1 tablespoon Saline Solution

Procedure:1. Add the glue and water to the bowl 2. Add in food coloring, glitter and other add-in's into the glue and water mixture 3. Stir the baking soda into the mixture. 4. Add saline solution to the mixture, stir fast like you're whipping a cake 5. Knead your slime until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

How Does It Work?

Fluffy SlimeThe slimy texture of fluffy slime comes from the polymers in glue mixing with the borate ions in the saline solution. What the shaving cream does in this slime recipe is create a different texture than any other slime recipe. Creating a softer, fluffier texture.

Materials:1 cup of glue 3 cups of shaving cream 5 tbsp saline solution

Procedure:1. Add the glue to the bowl. 2. Add in food coloring, glitter and other add-in's into the glue. 3. Stir in the shaving cream, slime will start to get thick and fluffy. 4. Add saline solution to the mixture 5. Knead your slime until it is desired consistancy.

How Does It Work?

The Scientific Method

1.  Ask a question

2.  Gather information and observe (research)

3.  Make a hypothesis (guess the answer)

4.  Experiment and test your hypothesis

5.  Analyze your test results

6.  Present a conclusion

The Scientific method is a method of research that scientists use when they are researching something new. This method can be applied to learning anything. We're using it today in our slime experiments.

There is a question with each experiment that involves changing something in a slime recipe. You're going to look at what makes slime work and what each component does (research.) Then you're going to fill in the spaces on the worksheet with your hypothesises (educated guesses.) Then you're going to use the instructions to experiment using slime. When you're done you'll record your findings and compare them to your hypothesis. Think about why you were right or why you were wrong. It will help you understand slime better than before.

The Method!

Investigate!

For this experiment, you need more than one brand of glue. You can do as few as two and as many as you want! (If you use more than four than print this sheet twice or draw your own chart on a separate sheet.) All glue brands aren't the same so your slime will be different with each glue type.

Glue Experiment

When performing an experiment remember that it is important to make sure the only thing that changes is the variable you are choosing. In this case the glue. Carefully measure all of the other ingredients so the only difference in your slimes is the brand of glue.

After they have done their research before they perform an experiment they make predictions about what the results will be. Then after they perform the experiment they always record their results as well. Before you begin the experiment make your predictions about what will be the smoothest slime. Remember that glue is a polymer, so it has a big impact on how your slime turns out.

Investigate!

For this experiment, you need both gel and regular shaving cream. You can also use different brands if you want to expand the experiment. (If you want to expand this experiment print the record sheet twice or draw your own chart on a separate sheet.) Shaving cream is all different from one another so what is the best for slime?

For this experiment, you need to pick out slime recipes and then calculate what half of the amount of water in the recipe is. You can use two different slime recipes for this experiment or up to four. Water is one of the most common slime ingredients and what helps give it that fluidity that it has.

Investigate!

For this experiment, your mind is the limit! You've explored how changing glue brands, types of shaving cream, and amounts of water can affect your slime. What question do you want to find the answer to next? Think about, what you think could make slime better or different? What if you add a different ingredient or change the amount of something.

Create Your Own Experiment

Just remember that when you're performing an experiment remember that it is important to make sure the only thing that changes is the variable you are choosing. So pick what you're changing or adding and make sure to carefully measure everything else so that you only have one variable in your experiment.

After they have done their research before they perform an experiment they make predictions about what the results will be. Then after they perform the experiment they always record their results as well. Before you begin the experiment make your predictions about what you think will happen as a result of your experiment.
