RISING ABOVE THE REST … HERE WE GROW AGAIN!

DFAC would like to thank YOU for your time, patience and contributions to help us RISE TO THE OCCASION as Florida’s premier art center! This summer, adult classes will begin in our six NEW studios on the 2nd floor, which also includes a lounge and gallery space. We also installed automatic doors at our main entrances for better accessibility. Dedicated studios for Jewelry, Fibers, Printmaking and large multi-purpose spaces will attract artists from around the world for Master workshops and educational programs. This fall, Stone Carving and Woodturning classes will move to a NEW Industrial Arts studio located in Downtown Dunedin. We are also partnering with renowned glass artist, Duncan McClellan, to offer Glass Blowing classes at his glass facility in St. Petersburg. Exciting things are happening and we are so thankful YOU are a part of it!

Did You Know? Tuition fees only cover 70% of the cost of one class. We raise the other 30% from friends like you, students and art lovers! When you register, whether online or in person, please consider adding a tax-deductible donation to your payment to help DFAC to continue to offer outstanding educational programming.

Front cover art: Tribute to Big, clay by Andrea Dixon, Student Exhibition 2016 Best in Show Award. Andrea created this sculpture in Gail Wynne’s Handbuilding class in memory of her cat. Big’s soulful green eyes were inspired by a watercolor workshop on animal eyes that Andrea took with Debra Weible.

The Poets’ Essential Toolkit is structured around the idea that a successful class is nothing more and nothing less than a group of people coming together to engage in thoughtful conversation about a subject. It will take class members through an investigation of the nature of creativity, definitions of poetry, meaning in a poem, strong diction, figures of speech, the abstract and the concrete, rhythm and meter, the poetic line, and the poem as a spoken and a written art form. Class meetings will typically include introduction of a poetic concept with published poems as models, exercises to practice that concept, and discussion of class members’ performance on those exercises. Each week class members will have a writing assignment which they will upload to a shared drive a couple days before class. By the day of class, students will have read all the writing assignments for that week. A portion of each class meeting will be devoted to hearing, discussing, and evaluating those assignments. By the end of the course, class members will have a broader set of writing tools and a set of successful poems that employ those tools. As a culminating activity students will share their poems before an audience of their classmates and invited guests.

Starting with short quick gesture poses and proceeding to 20 minute poses, such concepts as concentrics, the arabesque, universal rhythm, and isonomic plumb, are all explored. Included in this course will be a survey of skeletal and muscle anatomy and how it effects the figure in motion. Through these foundational experiences, the student will gain a freedom of expression through figure drawing and emerge excited about its potentials.

This technique is so fun that you will abandon your fears at the joy of applying paint with big brushes, splattering, stamping, stenciling and using unconventional objects to make marks. Once dry we will subtract and add to create one or two paintings (as time allows). This versatile technique works well for many subject matters including abstract. We will start on a whole sheet then cut it in half afterwards. Image will be drawn after Yupo is dry. See more of the artist’s work here: www.libit.net

The amazing offerings at DFAC are very circular in nature. Seeing original artwork in rotating gallery exhibits, taking classes/workshops related to media viewed in the galleries, exploring art concepts in the children’s museum based on fine art presented in the galleries, supporting artists through purchases in gift shop or from exhibits, expanding your horizons with artist lectures, events and socials. Where you enter the circle isn’t as important as being a part of the circle. I see smiling faces from children who visited DFAC via school tours. These same smiling faces move up through DFAC’s Summer Art Academy to eventually becoming student volunteers that help the younglings follow in their footsteps. These same children then decide to further develop their skills by taking classes after school. They continue on through youth art classes to the specialized Teen classes and up to the Adult offerings. Overall, it’s like a multi-multi- generational family that continues to complete the circle!
