THE BENNETTS BRITISH SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Bennetts British Superbike Championship is back Superbikes

are big, highly powered with a sexy appeal of passion, thrills and

glamour rich in appeal to a growing number of race goers, many

of whom ride to the Championship events around the country on

the showroom ‘look-alike’ versions of these superb machines.

This is a key factor for the popularity of the racing, as it provides a

positive link between the enthusiasts and the on-track stars.

This has all been brought about by a radical change of thinking some

four years ago which revamped the Championship, re-writing the

rule book and opening the way for four cylinder bikes, up to 1000cc,

to join the race action. Immediately road going favourites such

as the Honda Fireblade, the Suzuki GSX-R1000, Yamaha R1 and

Kawasaki ZX 10R were eligible to race alongside the Ducatis.

The new dawn for Superbike racing immediately provided grids

boasting both quantity and quality. Importantly synergy between

the public and the manufacturers with their factory backed teams

was created. Bikes from rival marques were put through their

paces and proved in a high speed selling environment.

For the technical, Superbikes in the British Championship have to

comply with the following basic criteria: they use either four stroke,

four-cylinder 750-1000cc engine and have an overall minimum

bike weight of 162kg, or they have a four stroke, two cylinder

800-1000cc engines with a minimum bike weight of 165kg.

In appearance, the Superbikes racing on track are identical to their road-

going cousins, but beware the ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing.’ Behind the outward

appearance there are important differences with upgraded suspensions,

blue-printed engines, more power, special ‘trick-bits’ and full race tyres.

ELIGIBLE RIDERS

All teams and rider must be registered with MCRCB, although

one event entries may be considered by the organisers.

Riders must be 17 years of age, or older, and in principle have a

minimum of two years racing experience at National level. They have

to hold an International or National licence. Overseas riders must be in

possession of an FIM International licence or European “A” licence and

have start permission from their FMN to include personal

accident insurance and repatriation insurance.

POINTS SCORING

Championship points will be awarded to the fi rst 15 fi nishers of

a race on the basis of 25-20-16-13-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

STARTING GRID

This will be derived on the basis of a single qualifying session held on

the afternoon prior to the races - the earlier three periods, each of 50

minutes, will be for free practice only. The fastest rider will take pole

position through to the slowest rider taking the fi nal position on the starting

grid. The starting grid line-up is common to both races at each round.

THE RIZLA SUZUKI GSX-R1000 can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 2.4seconds. That is Formula One car quick and is just one of the reasons the Rizla Suzuki really can lay claim to the title of Superbike.

The Rizla Suzuki lays down nearly 210 horse power through its rear tyre that has an area the size of a credit card touching the ground. It will go from 0-100mph in just four seconds or 0-200mph in just 15-seconds.

EARLY BEGINNINGS- A TASTE FOR SUPERBIKE SPONSORSHIPIn 1986, a friend persuaded Darrell Healey to attend a motorbike race meeting at Brands Hatch and he was instantly hooked on the high-octane, adrenalin fuelled, dynamic and exciting action on the track. Over the next two decades, Darrell’s involvement in Superbikes grew as he oversaw the emergence of the GSE Racing Team and turned many people’s dreams into reality.

At the time of Darrell’s initial taste of Superbike action, he was working part-time for Groundworks South East (now GSE Group) and as his involvement increased within the GSE group- from partner through to the Chairman’s position he holds today- so the GSE Racing team grew. Initially, Darrell decided to sponsor local rider Tim Bourne and followed his progress avidly for four years.

“I was completely hooked on Superbikes from the word go and wanted to get involved in some way- the easiest was to support a local rider and Tim fi tted the bill perfectly” says Darrell.

In 1991, Darrell moved to Team Green Kawasaki and provided backing as the team competed for the British Superbike Championship. He also extended his involvement in Superbikes by sponsoring the pioneering Roton team (latterly Duckham’s Norton), helping Jim Moodie to a second placed ranking in the 1993 British Superbike Championship. Within 12 months, a GSE backed rider, Ian Simpson landed the British Superbike title and Darrell continued to support both Simpson and Phil Borley at Castrol Honda in 1995.

LAUNCH OF GSE RACING- FROM SPONSOR TO TEAM PRINCIPALAt the close of the 1996 season, Darrell’s involvement in Superbikes underwent a radical transformation.

“I felt at the time (the majority of) sponsors weren’t receiving value for money- it seemed clear that if I was to get the best out of Superbikes I should start a racing team of my own- and so GSE Racing took its fi rst few steps in British Superbikes.”

And those steps were by no means tentative. Under the GSE banner in 1997, rider Sean Emmett powered to a credible 5th in the Championship and heralded the arrival of a new team in the paddock. In 1998, GSE Racing made an even bigger splash when they signed Australian sensation Troy Bayliss and partnered him with the former Grand Prix rider Jamie Robinson (and latterly the highly rated Matt Llewellyn).

These signings issued a note of serious intent and despite performing not quite as well

as they would have liked with Bayliss and Llewellyn fi nishing 8th and 9th, the season was one of consistent improvement.

“Our fi rst full season in British Superbikes was a hugely exciting time and although we didn’t achieve any astounding results we were very happy with our progress. As a new team, we managed to build a platform with which to develop in Superbikes” comments Darrell.

BECOMING THE PROMINENT BRITISH TEAM IN SUPERBIKES- BACK TO BACK TITLES In 1999, the missing piece in the jigsaw fell into place and Darrell’s personal dream started coming to fruition. To complete the team’s emergence from middle ranked runners to challenging for the title at the front of the grid, an experienced and accomplished team leader was required.

“I knew that the introduction of an organised team manager was necessary if we wanted to be challenging the more established teams,” says Darrell. “I needed someone to come in and run a tight ship and my number one choice was Colin Wright. I’d met him in 1991 at Kawasaki and was immediately impressed with the skills he showed there”.

Colin came on board in time for GSE’s assault on the 1999 Championship, a quest which was to ultimately prove successful. The team held on to Troy Bayliss’ services and partnered him with Neil Hodgson, the pair proving a formidable duo. Bayliss took six race wins, 14 podiums and seven pole positions as GSE Racing swept all before them to take the Superbike Championship.

And the dream didn’t end there- with GSE repeating the feat a year later. This time Neil Hodgson stormed to the title with the able support of Niall Mackenzie. GSE Racing had established themselves as the best Superbike team in Britain and it was time to test themselves in the international arena.

THE NEXT TEST- THE MOVE INTO THE INTERNATIONAL ARENA

“Our initial aim was to be the best Superbike team in Britain. We achieved that and rather than doing the same thing year in and year out, we made the decision to move into international competition and take on the challenge of World Superbikes- I personally relished this test of the teams skills and felt we acquitted ourselves very well”.

The road was not as smooth as was hoped with the team unable to secure a title sponsor for the 2001 season. Darrell was undeterred in his determination to race and to be successful and his personal passion for the sport and GSE in

particular was evident. “GSE Racing was always totally committed to competing in the Superbike World Championship and there was no way that our standards would drop. If that meant that I had to cover a high proportion of the cost, then so be it”.

Darrell’s faith was vindicated as the 2001 season saw GSE Racing scale new heights and launch a serious assault on the Superbike World Championship. Supporters were treated to Neil Hodgson’s scintillating battle at the front of the pack with World Champion Colin Edwards and former GSE rider Troy Bayliss, who ended the season with the title. In his fi rst WSB season, the second GSE rider, James Toseland showed maturity beyond his years and steadily improved to the point where he was consistently fi nishing ahead of world-class rivals.

“2001 was a dream start for the team in WSB- we took the fi ght to the big guns of motorcycle sport and traded blow for blow with the factory teams with unlimited budgets and access to exclusive engineering. I was delighted with the way the whole team acquitted themselves and considering that we were the new boys, I think Neil’s fi fth and James’ thirteenth places were a testament to our quality”.

GSE Racing evolved in 2002 with an infl ux of sponsors, extra backing and the same settled rider line up allowing them to consolidate their position in WSB. Once again, James Toseland and Neil Hodgson battled toe-to-toe with the top teams and fi nished the season in notable 7th and 3rd positions. They benefi ted from factory support provided by Ducati Corse and hopes were high that in 2003, the team could provide a WSB champion.

In 2003, the team raced two proven riders in James Toseland and Chris Walker and again achieved excellent results with 3rd and 6th places secured at the end of the season. However, the season was played out against the frustrating backdrop of GSE’s quest to fi nd a manufacturing partner. Team Manager Colin Wright commented,

“One of the things we established mid-way through our second year of competing in the World Series was that we needed to be running or managing a factory team to actually win the Championship. We have always been very grateful for the support we received from Ducati but to achieve our goal – which was to win – we needed far more support direct from a motorcycle manufacturer”.

But support was not forthcoming from the major manufacturers. “We would have got more support if the other manufacturers had come back into the championship but when the Japanese pulled out due to disagreement with

the promoters there was little hope. We didn’t want to go racing for the sake of racing; we wanted to compete at the highest level with the best possible support,” stated Colin.

With this disappointing news, the fi rst chapter of GSE’s racing history came to an end and the team did not compete in 2004.

BACK TO WINNING WAYSAfter a number of intense but encouraging winter tests, the Airwaves Ducati team was offi cially launched on the 22nd March 2005 with host Suzi Perry introducing riders Leon Haslam and James Haydon astride their Ducati 999F04’s.

For the fi rst round of the 2005 championship season the highly respected and experienced WSB and GP star Gregorio Lavilla was drafted in to replace an injured James Haydon, whose injury sustained during testing at Albacete failed to heal in suffi cient time. For a team going for its third outright British Superbike Championship, the performances from both of its riders at the season opener were a promising sign of things to come with Haslam setting a blistering time to secure pole position and Lavilla achieving two podium fi nishes.

What followed was an impressive run of results for both riders. Having secured four podiums from fours starts, the performances of the 30-year-old Spaniard lead to Gregorio Lavilla being announced as a permanent member of the Airwaves Ducati squad after James Haydon made the diffi cult decision to stand down for the rest of the season.

Lavilla stormed into the lead of the championship with a sensational double race victory at the penultimate round at Donnington Park and went into the fi nal round of the championship with a 13 point lead over his nearest rival. The Airwaves Ducati team fi nished their fi rst year back in competition with a dominant display at Brands Hatch. A pair of one-two fi nishes for the Airwaves Ducati team saw their rider Gregorio Lavilla crowned British Superbike Champion and Leon Haslam take fourth in the championship in front of a crowd of thousands.

Hawk Kawasaki are eagerly preparing for round eight of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Knockhill, 14th – 16th July. The team will be a rider down, as 33-year-old Dean Thomas is still recovering from injuries he sustained at Snetterton Circuit. Thomas suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung after a huge crash involving James Haydon. It is doubtful he will return to the Championship until the Croft round in August.

The two remaining riders, Australian Craig Coxhell (23) and youngster Peter Hickman (19) will be gunning for some strong results at the Scottish circuit after their gutsy performance at Snetterton where they gained a fi fth and tenth respectively in race two.

The Kawasaki ZX-10R riders have had a three-week break and have had time to relax and prepare themselves for the remainder of the Superbike season. By the time Knockhill approaches the two riders will have completed a two day test at Croft which will hopefully enable Coxhell to develop the 06 ZX-10R and for Hickman to continue to learn the Superbike, with it being his fi rst year in the Class.

with Craig Coxhell gaining their best result of fourth position at the second round at Donington Park. Hawk are one of the smaller funded teams and it is very diffi cult in that situation to compete against the factory teams such as Ducati, Honda and Suzuki. Hawk Kawasaki are constantly looking for sponsorship and funding for the race seasons to try and help them produce some good and competitive results.

Teams Manager/Owner Stuart Hicken is happy with the way things have been going this year commenting, “We always knew that this season would be an uphill struggle against the factory backed teams. The British Superbike series is one of the most competitive and renowned series in the World hence why

Ducati, Honda and Suzuki gain a hefty amount of factory backing. We have had delivery of a new bike this season and have been unable to test as much as we would have liked to, therefore having to do most of the work at the races. The three riders are doing a fantastic job, sadly Dean will be missing the next few rounds but hopefully he will be back out with us soon. Craig and Peter are improving at every event and starting to get some good results. I am confi dent we can continue to progress and move forward, we had a great result at the Isle of Man TT with Carl Rennie who gained a sixth and seventh in the Superbike races for Hawk. We are hoping Knockhill will be good for us as the track has been freshly re-surfaced and widened

in places which might benefi t us.”

As the British Superbike series enters the second half of its programme and heads north of the boarder the HM Plant Honda pairing of Ryuichi Kiyonari and Karl Harris arrive with the sole intention of claiming yet more podium fi nishes. Both riders have experienced the highs, and lows, of Superbike racing this year; celebrating on the rostrum on several occasions with one of them scoring a delightful double last time out at Snetterton. But as they arrive at the

demanding Knockhill circuit, Fife on the 14 July, they will no doubt have their work cut out as the ever-competitive two-wheeled series powers in to Scotland for its annual Celtic clash. Scottish Biker charts Kiyo’s and Harris’ journey so far this year.

At the season opener in April both HM Plant Honda riders made their way onto the rostrum with a fi rst and second place respectively, with Kiyo claiming his fi rst win by a massive 20-second advantage!

At Donington Park two weeks later, they were faced with treacherous weather

conditions. Kiyo was the sole Honda visitor to the

rostrum with a second place fi nish in race one. In race two

the pair slid due to appalling

weather conditions. Five days later, they arrived at Thruxton

circuit. In the fi rst race the Japanese ace fi nished on the podium in third while his team mate equalled his result in the second fi xture

Two weeks later Harris fi nished fi fth in the fi rst but it was the second race in which he shone. The tenacious Sheffi eld-rider looked set to beat the current series leader Gregorio Lavilla to the chequered fl ag and claim his maiden Superbike win. He was leading on the fi nal lap but the Spaniard edged ahead in the closing moments and beat the HM Plant rider to the line by the slimmest of margins: 0.058 seconds.

Rain stopped play at Mondello Park in Ireland but proceedings got off to a good start at a sunshine-soaked Mallory two weeks later. Kiyo qualifi ed on the front row and led from start to fi nish; a victory that he followed up with a third place in race two.

The pair re-convened at Snetterton two weeks later,

where Kiyo had a singular desire to make it two victories at a circuit where he was the current lap record holder. The 23-year-old did not disappoint, bagging two wins at the ultra-fast Norfolk track. Harris suffered a tumultuous meeting. In race one he rounded the fi rst corner in second behind Kiyo but two laps later, his weekend was brought to a premature conclusion when he had a high-speed off. Harris was momentarily concussed, but luckily un-hurt, and watched race two from the sidelines.

This year, Team Virgin Mobile Yamaha have a line-up of young guns with

all three riders under the age of 21 years old and all three graduates of the Virgin Mobile Cup. The Cup is a platform for riders aged between 16-22 years old to get noticed and Team Virgin Mobile are the only team investing in young racing talent in this country.

Tommy Hill, 21 from Lingfi eld in Surrey was the inaugural winner of the cup in 2001 and has since proved he is one of the most exciting young riders the country has ever produced, he is lead rider for Virgin Mobile Yamaha and last year had his fi rst British Superbike win with a victory at Cadwell Park. So far this year he has shown that he can compete with the older more experienced riders and was the only British Superbike rider taking part on a wild card in the World Superbike Championship on 28th May 2006 at

Silverstone. He did

amazingly well and got pole position, beating Haga, Bayliss and Corser! He came away with two 12th places in the races. Last week at Snetterton Tommy scored his second ever podium by getting a third place in race two behind Kiyonari and Haslam. This is the fi rst podium for the team this year and the fi rst time Pirelli have been on the podium in the British Championship in the dry. (see more info in our news section on the website.)

Aussie Billy McConnell, 19, won the Virgin Mobile Cup last year therefore securing the second ride in Rob McElnea’s Virgin Mobile Yamaha British Superbike team. McConnell caused a stir in the championship when in his fi rst British Superbike race at Brands Hatch he was in second position for most of the race ahead of last years BSB Champion Gregorio Lavilla and the rest of the pack, a bit of bad luck meant Billy crashed out just before the end of the race. Billy has a rare racing talent which means he is not afraid to get stuck into the big names and he is

certainly a name to watch for the future. Billy scored his best

fi nish of the season so far last week by

getting ninth.

Kieran Clarke is 21 from

Langley Mill in Nottinghamshire. Taking third place in the Virgin Mobile Cup in 2001, Clarke then rode with a number of British Superbike teams but through bad luck and injury has never had the success he deserves. It looked like it was going to be another bad year when in pre season testing in Spain, Kieran broke his leg in a crash, but over the precious months before the fi rst race Clarke got back to full strength and is hoping this could be his year. Last week Kieran came through a run of confi dence knocks and had his best weekend so far by getting 16th and 11th places.

The bike is a Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike, this means it is essentially a road-going R1 that you or I could buy from a showroom but with around 60 thousand pounds of work done to it! It is almost 1000cc and can reach speeds of up to 200mph.

The team manager Rob McElnea is the only manager to have been a British Superbike Champion rider (1991) and he has also enjoyed success at Grand Prix level and won the Isle of Man TT race 3 times. Virgin Mobile have sponsored the team for six years, the longest running title sponsorship agreement in the Championship. Rob’s dream was to start a competition to uncover young British racing talent and in 2001 the Virgin Mobile Cup was born with a grid of

riders aged between 16-22 years old all on board identical Yamaha R6 600 cc bikes all competiting to win the ultimate

prize of a place in the Virgin Mobile Yamaha British Superbike team for

the following year. The Cup is all about rider ability not about

what a mechanic can do to a bike, it is the perfect way to uncover new talented riders.

Moto Guzzi motorcycles have always been renowned for their technical solutions and bold styling and the Griso continues the tradition, with

its legendary 90 degrees V-twin engine wrapped in a beautifully designed chassis. However, enthusiasts will note that the classic Moto Guzzi engine has been completely redesigned by the engineers at Mandello del Lario.

Great attention to detail has been lavished onto the highly original chassis too. The Griso is aggressive and solid with its frame and engine well in view, its large fuel tank and the closely packed fi ns on the V-twin cylinders. “There are so many details to savour; this bike is Italian design at its very best, and there’s always more to look at no matter how close you get,” writes Kevin Ash for The Daily Telegraph. “The Griso rider should don an Armani suit before fi ring up the 1,064cc motor.”

The Griso is so desirable that movie star and around the world biker, Ewan McGregor bought the fi rst one to arrive at his local dealer.

This unique motorcycle escapes classifi cation; it may be a naked, but then it’s also a power cruiser and a techno custom. The powerful engine merges with the mighty frame’s tubes to form a super-rigid structure from which the bike’s defi ning characteristics stand out: the wide handlebars that give it a cool and commanding riding stance, the large headlight where even the bulb mountings are deliberately styled, the deceptively classic-looking instruments that feature an active matrix LCD and futuristic on-board computer, the sleek tail with its high intensity LED rear light cluster; you’ll even fi nd Guzzi’s eagle crest cast into the plastic light lens... To the right, the oil cooler is housed in a squared aluminium-alloy casting fi nished in silk black, while to the left there’s the chunky pair of exhaust pipes that twist down to the back of the engine and disappear briefl y, before re-emerging into a conical silencer of massive proportions.

“Such a beautiful design offers the potential of riding disappointment, but the Griso keeps on impressing from the saddle,” writes Ash. “The shorter gearing transforms a willing engine into a punchy, vivacious one that drives its way past ordinary traffi c with little effort.”

The Griso also handles beautifully. The front end feels planted and stable even at high speeds, transmitting plenty of feel back to the rider, while the rear powers smoothly out of corners. “The suspension is high quality, matching Japanese Showa forks with a Boge rear damper,” writes Ash.The Griso will appeal to the motorcyclist who wants a unique and distinctive machine, a masterpiece of design that is a pleasure to show off around town and a hoot to ride on the back roads.

ENGINE PERFORMANCEThe all-new engine retains the classic Moto Guzzi 90 degree V-twin layout, but gets a host of technical innovations. It’s equipped with electronic fuel injection to provide silky-smooth idling and touch-of-a-button starting even in very cold weather. Twin spark ignition and fuel injectors in the inlet manifolds for perfect combustion ensure consistent high performance. Power delivery is smooth and progressive, and emissions and consumption are reduced to a minimum to let the Griso conform fully to Euro3 standards.

Meanwhile, the alternator no longer resides in front of the crankshaft. Instead, it snuggles neatly between the two cylinders, making the whole engine shorter and more compact, and improving weight distribution. The conrods are 10% lighter and the ratio between conrod length and piston stroke has been improved to reduce vibration. Double oil sprays are used to improve effi ciency and extend engine life. The metal cylinder head gaskets are new, and designed to improve heat transmission and to ensure that pressure from the cylinder head studs remains constant. Tweaks to the intake and exhaust system and the shorter gear ratios produce an extra pull from the already torquey engine. Maximum power is 87bhp @ 7,600 rpm, and maximum torque is 66lb.ft @ 6,400 rpm.

The gearbox has been completely redesigned too and is now slick and comfortable to use. “Gear changing is smooth and easy, which you have to mention as on older Guzzis it wasn’t,” writes Ash.

But these impressive stats still fail to convey the Griso’s unique riding experience. Press the starter button and you’re greeted with those unmistakable deep-throated pulsations from Moto Guzzi’s 90° V-Twin powerplant. The instant torque that comes in smoothly makes the Griso easy to ride; pick up the pace and you’ll fi nd it more than capable of sports bike speeds.

CHASSIS PERFORMANCEThe Griso 1100’s long and low power cruiser profi le conceals the chassis strength that gives this great new Italian motorcycle superior rigidity and unexpected agility, letting the rider carve and maintain surgically precise lines.The high strength tubular steel frame envelops the engine, and the parallelogram swingarm incorporates Guzzi’s patented compact reactive shaft drive system. The system leaves the bevel gear and shaft free to oscillate while the drive shaft incorporates two universal joints with built-in torsional shock absorbers. This results in smooth, precise and jerk-free power, eliminating the anti-shaft effect associated with conventional shaft drives.

The 43mm upside down front forks are adjustable for spring preload and compression and rebound damping, while the rear suspension is made up of a single-sided swingarm and rising rate linkages, with a monoshock also adjustable for preload, compression and rebound.

The high performance braking system is made up of two 320mm fl oating discs and twin calipers with four opposing pistons at the front, and a single 282mm disc with a fl oating caliper and twin parallel pistons at the back. Grip is guaranteed by high performance 120/70 ZR17” front, and 180/55 ZR17” rear, tyres. These are fi tted to hollow three-spoke aluminium alloy wheels.
