The SHAPE Officers’ Wives’ Club (SOWC) was created in April 1967. The first SOWC function was a luncheon held in what is now known as the SHAPE CLUB. Approximately 30 to 50 ladies attended. On the program was a demonstration of Belgian cooking, which proved to be a great success. After this event, the attendance increased, and the Club took its shape organizing more and more events each year.

In the spring of 2008 the club changed the name to the SHAPE International Women’s Club – SIWC. Women affiliated with SHAPE could participate in the events. One of the main objectives is to sponsor activities of interest to members, and promote friendship and the exchange of ideas through activities and events.

Since 2008 the women with SHAPE were able to join an intercultural environment discovering food, customs, and traditions from all the other allied and partner nations.

The SIWC holds monthly events (luncheons and evening events) from September through May. Our events are very popular, and are a great opportunity to learn more about different cultures within the SHAPE

community. These events can also be an escape from the daily routine; a nice fun, relaxed evening, or lunch amongst your friends (old and new).

The main activity during Covid-19 was creating an International Cookbook. The first edition of SIWC cookbook, with over 190 recipes from 34 countries, was such a success that we organized a second printing.

We truly believe that sharing our cultures is a great way of opening our minds. Through exposure to another’s culture and way of life, we learn more about people, and more about ourselves when we broaden our perspective.

We are kicking off the 2021-2022 with a Welcome Coffee Event at the SHAPE Club, where you can discover all the different clubs and activities that the SHAPE community has to offer. Tickets for this event can be bought at the Rendez-Vous two weeks before the event, or during SHAPE Fest at the SIWC tent.

We are looking forward to meeting you at one of our future events.

The members of SHAPE International Women’s Club (SIWC) are happy to announce the 2021-2022 season has begun. Since 1967 our club has been an important stakeholder in promoting the quality of life within the SHAPE

community. SIWC values friendship and understanding among women from different countries. This atmosphere encourages you to meet new people and make new friendships, maybe even ones that will last a lifetime.

On Friday 10th September, the mayor of Soignies invited all new habitants to welcome them in the city.

More than 100 Shapians living in Soignies were invited. Every participant received a goodie bag with information on the city and flyers about activities in the neighborhood.

A harpist and a pianist played some music. The mayor introduced herself and the city and welcomed all newcomers. Then, the municipal college was introduced.

After this official part, everybody was invited to have a drink. People could also go and visit the local “Halle au saveurs” where they could taste some local products.

Thanks to the help of USAG Benelux the whole event was translated.

The main reason for organizing this event was to get to know those of you who have had the good fortune to come to these lands, all in a

relaxed and familiar atmosphere, although this year within COVID measures that we must respect.

It is an outdoor event that covered almost the whole day, in which activities were prepared for children and a picnic lunch, with barbecue for the little ones. The older children ate dishes prepared by the families to share. It is customary for each family to prepare a dish, with the following distribution according to the year in SHAPE:

The general sequence of planned activities started at 10 a.m. with the sports activities, followed by the fun “face painting” activity, the collection of food, the speeches of Major General Roca, SHAPE STREN, and Brigadier General Chueca, Spanish NMR and concluded with the contest of delicious Spanish omelettes and the feast.

The event was very well planned by the Board and the control of attendees due to Covid requirements, impeccable. Volunteers were called upon for preparations, as these events require many hands! Among the tasks required were moving and setting up tables, games and sports equipment, and collecting them at the end; dressing the tables and receiving and organizing the food brought by the families; taking photos of the event; organizing the cleaning shifts of the area; preparing and managing drinks and cooking the burgers on the BBQ; and, as you can never miss, playing music during the event!

The Spanish Community in SHAPE is quite large, which allows, if its members want, to organize “saraos” and events for many people, sharing the efforts among all.

There was a very good predisposition, we encourage Spanish Shapians to continue like this, with the COLLABORATION OF ALL we can do great things and leave a great image of the Spanish Community in SHAPE and therefore of SPAIN.

Spanish Welcome Picnic

On Saturday September 4th, the Spanish SHAPE community celebrated the traditional Welcome PICNIC, an activity that due to the pandemic could not take place last year.

Getting to Know:Gionvanni “Vanni” D’ Ambrosio - the Toastmaster By Vice President for Public Relations Katherine Cleo Gonzales

Vanni stood with his feet steadfast against the platform. He held his breath, as he held the microphone – a bit tighter as memories

of last year’s event rushed in.

He barely spoke then. He was conscious of his English. He was good with it but he always thought he could do better. So he spit out his words, ever so lightly, and as swiftly, as if nothing was said.

And with another breath, he was back to the present: looking at thousands of faces looking back at him – some familiar faces of friends, colleagues, of families, of children, of everyone whose part of the Make A Wish event held in SHAPE every year.

He felt no hesitation, no awkwardness, not a thought of being out of place. It felt as if he’s where he belongs – with his feet steadfast against the platform, one hand on the microphone and another on top of his heart as the rush of emotions come running in.

The words started flowing, nonstop. It was so much that he can’t stop himself from talking. No one can. He went on and on: speaking as if he’s just talking to a friend and not to thousands; as if he was just in his living room, and not in a huge stage; as if he was a new man with a newfound voice.

But alas, he is the same Vanni – the Italian guy, always happy to live in this world.

The same Vanni who hit the jackpot when he married an amazing lady. The same Vanni who fathered two children who are now almost adults.

The same Vanni who is a CWO for the Italian Air Force, the reason why he’s in SHAPE in the first place. That man behind SHAPE sports and fitness activities. The same guy whose addicted to nothing else but coffee (and maybe his wife).

What changed then? From the point when he’s unable to speak – to that fateful day when he conquered the stage – oozing with confidence?

Well, let’s just say that he embarked on a journey.

Twelve years ago, he met someone who convinced him to give away flyers about SHAPE Toastmasters International Club while running the fitness program. But Vanni got curious and he wanted to be part of it, not just to advertise but to attend one meeting.

It didn’t end with just attending. At that point, he wanted to improve his English and to work on how he shows himself to people. Being part of an English speaking club allowed for him to grow.

In the club, he met one of the most well organized woman (apart from his wife), Else-Marie Amundsen. He just knew that she has to be his mentor. It was not long enough for her to challenge him to deliver his first ever speech. She said “Just be yourself and tell us who you are.” And that was the beginning of his Toastmaster journey.

In this journey he realized that he loves to speak a lot but he learned to speak less and listen more.

And if he does speak, it would be purposeful and accurate. His English got better and better.

p Vanni after his first public speech

www.shape2day.com 7SCL

He is now the VP for Membership for SHAPE International Toastmasters club. He became a mentor to younger people through his position, his speeches, and his actions.

He became the Vanni, we all know now, funny and inspiring – confident and convincing; conquering the world, one stage at a time.

SHAPE IC3s 2021 Charity Tombola: A Look Behind the ScenesBy IC3

“Vaquita” has been long used to describe a Spanish community-run initiative that collected milk for children, placed into a Belgian government-run foster-care Home, ASBL SAAE Bethl’eem. In 2013, the Vaquita needed a sponsor to continue its monthly food drives and our collaboration began.

A “little cow” donation can appeared one year, which helped purchase new bedding for the children. IC3 can provide transparency for Vaquita donations, as our own books are audited yearly and Jean, (IC3s Treasurer), handles any Vaquita purchases. Children were funded for summer activities in 2019 and 2020, but the Vaquita monthly drive itself, was stopped due to COVID in February 2020.

In spite of the continued restrictions, we were contacted in January 2021 by the Home to ask if they could count on IC3 to send four children to camp in August, 2021.

Pam, President of IC3 explained: “The Executive Board agreed that if we plundered our own IC3s bank account, we could, even knowing that the arrangements were still tentative. But, then, we had to think about a way to raise some more money”.

An idea was proposed – could we find some prizes and run a Virtual Tombola? This is how this new adventure began.

“Some of us had had experiences with SHAPE Concessionaires and other local merchants, so we started to ask!” The response was gratifying!

“Going virtual was utterly new to us but we had to try something. Many of us volunteer with IC3 because our efforts help children who are innocent, unfortunately affected by the choices of others. When you think of the adjustments these children have had to face, taken out of their families and placed by the Belgian Court system with strangers in a foster-care run Home?” Pam added. “Add the restrictions and fear of the pandemic?”

One major challenge was how to sell tickets virtually. We are aware not everyone uses social media, so thankfully, we were able to follow in the footsteps of a previous Group 2 who had had a successful fundraiser with the Morale and Welfare SHAPE Community Life Management staff. With their help, a form was placed on the Events’ section of the ‘SHAPE2day’ website. Interested supporters could request tickets, use our IBAN to pay and receive their tickets in their Inbox!

The Draw itself could be done – Live – from our own IC3 Facebook page. Our thanks to Vic, for finding the raffle machine to give our fundraiser the transparency it needed!

“Helena’s ‘amazing’ creative marketing design added to the success when we invited the children from the last year’s camp to give her their art impressions.

Add Vic’s inspired ticket sales—she with her husband, Andy, and a UK friend named Alice, were responsible for selling 218 of the 508 tickets sold!

The synergy continued – IC3 had pre-committed to sending four children to camp, with the hope of adding two more. What unfolded was pretty incredible!

An early in-house fundraiser by J2 aspiring to send one child to camp, kicked off the giving.

Customers shopping at USAG Brussels’ Consignment Shop fed Hugo (a black piggy bank) signed to help to “send the kids to camp”, add Alek’s (Shop Manager) enthusiasm in a conversation one night with a late customer plus a private donation; asked for three.

“When the SHAPE Vintage Closet joined in the fray with their donation, we started to have hope that we could help more kids”.

When IC3 learned they would be receiving something from the SHAPE International Women’s Club (SIWC) from their recent Cookbook sales, we tentatively approached another Home, Don Bosco Centre Jeune.

It began as a modest goal in the winter of 2021 to help lift the oppression of the continuing pandemic. This is the behind the scenes story of how the SHAPE International Chapel Centre Charity Association’s Board (SHAPE IC3), with a supporting community from SHAPE/Chievres, together tirelessly worked to assist a return to a ‘better’

normal for children in two local Children’s Homes

www.shape2day.com 9SCL

Grandma’s Attic President Suzanne, gave us a chance to test “what not to do when you shoot live on FB”, and their own (USAG Chievres Private Org) Board approved our last minute request to top-up our funding.

“When the IC3 Executive Board commits to a project, we make every effort to ensure that it happens. A SHAPE Morale and Welfare, Base Support Group 2 is a ‘not for profit’ activity. Our full Board consists of 10 international volunteers. The SHAPE International Chapel Sr. Staff Chaplain is our sponsor. But most importantly, we must follow SHAPE regulations. We can never truly predict the generosity of our community or of late, navigate COVID restrictions, for new projects but, we never want to be in a position where we only have enough funds for some, versus all.” Pam explained.

What was accomplished? Five children, from the SAAE Bethl’eem Home, went to the Verlaine summer camp and nine other children attended differing lengths of daytime organized activities called, “Stages”.

One boy from Don Bosco (who had to leave having just turned 18 years old but was still supported), was able to re-join his 14 former housemates at their Don Bosco Camp in Chassepierre for 10 days. Remaining funds provided two additional weeks of “Stages” for each of the 14 boys as well.

“We were so grateful to everyone who helped to make this event a success”. Pam remarked. “Community collaboration took a sad situation and gave everyone hope for a summer of possibilities; it was more than we ever could have imagined”.

Though echoes of discord exist in our world—differing beliefs and behaviours, even now amplified by the fear of a persistent pandemic, there is a factor that transcends all of that. Humanity is wired to lend a helping hand when needed, and those who respond restore a little harmony. They know that there is value, not only in achieving the goal, but in the community relationships affected—the strangers who are no longer strangers for having worked together or become customers and colleagues who are increasingly appreciated for their untiring efforts and expertise. Our new (virtual) adventure proved this.

Major General Frank SCHLÖSSER, Commander of the NCISG and DCOS Cyberspace, conducted the ceremony for the change of responsibility NCISG DCOM/COS from Brigadier General Hans FOLMER to Brigadier General Luigi CARPINETO.

Along with other distinguished military guests, the event was attended by Rear Admiral Enrico Pacioni, the National Military Representative of Italy to SHAPE; Colonel Edwin Altena, the National Military Representative of the Netherlands to SHAPE; and Mr. Timothy Murphy, Directorate Service Operations of the NCIA. The Commander welcomed also Brigadier General Stelian Cristea, Director of the Cyberspace Operations Centre (CyOC); Colonel Constantino Russo, Deputy Director CyOC; Brigadier General Dimitrios Kesopoulos, ACOS Cyber J6; Captain Ettore Socci, Director FMN Secretariat; LtCol Peters Torsten, Commander 1NSB; RSM Langevin Stephan, Senior Enlisted Leader from 1NSB and Command Sergeant Major Peter KnÖringer, NCISG Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL). Major General SchlÖsser directed a special greeting with a bouquet of flowers to General Carpineto’s wife, Mrs. Federica Castellazzi.

Major General SchlÖsser used the change of responsibility ceremony to emphasis the important role of the NCISG Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, which Brigadier General FOLMER had carried out from August 2018 through to July 2021.

Major General SchlÖsser underlined that Brigadier General Folmer was not only the DCOM/COS, but had been on several occasions the Acting

NCISG Commander and had executed all duties in an exemplary fashion. Major General Schlsser paid tribute to Brigadier General Folmer for his outstanding job over the last three years.

“You took the challenge and you sailed the ship called the NCISG very safely through stormy waters with many icebergs. I have to admit that the way you did was very impressive. It is your clear thinking, your structured way of working, your leadership and your transparency, which made the difference. The most impressive aspect of your outstanding character is that you never lost your military family from your radar” – he said.

In his remarks, he emphasized, “Hans Folmer is a man that you can discuss at any time all issues and you always can learn a lot from his experiences and his visions”. General SchlÖsser pointed out that Brigadier General Folmer always pushes the thoughts about future operations’ requirements and combines these with important training and exercise aspects.

Major General SchlÖsser thanked Brigadier General Hans Folmer for his years of serving NCISG, for his personal commitment, friendship and professionalism. He wished him all the best for his next appointment and good luck for his return to the Netherlands with his family. Furthermore, Major General SchlÖsser warmly welcomed Brigadier General Luigi CARPINETO to take up the gauntlet as the new NCISG Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, wishing him a perfect start with his team in his new post, saying “My first impression is that you are

passionate, which is most important in our environment”. Handing over the responsibility to Brigadier General Luigi Carpineto, Brigadier General Hans Folmer gave an overview of his experiences with NCISG. Brigadier General Folmer underlined that during COVID-19 all staff, NATO Signal Battalions (NSBs), Deployable Communications Modules (DCMs), showed that they are capable of adapting to new situations. In his opinion a lot of creativity was shown at all levels, new kinds of exercises were implemented locally, leaderships from the DCM Commanders to deal with small teams were developed, divisions working from home, and new capabilities developed to support all of this. Brigadier General Folmer stated:

“I think that we all reinvented ourselves, and worked in a more pragmatic way where we managed to deal with this crisis. I am very grateful for that and for all the support.”

Brigadier General Folmer stated in his speech that he was grateful to have experienced the leadership at SHAPE and from so many great commanders at NCISG. The General said: “What I would like to do is thank everybody individually and mention everybody individually, but I cannot, I would like to thank all the NSBs, CSEL, and audience for all the support you have provided.”

The General thanked all the representatives from the Cyberspace Directorate and the NCISG staff. He also directed a special thanks to his personal staff, his Military Assistant, Major Bart Jacobs; his Coordination Officer, LTC Frederik Koppenjan, and his Personal Assistant, OR-9 Gaston de Ruiters. He commended them on their strong teamwork, which enabled him to execute his responsibilities and concluded: “It was great to work with you.”

Finally, Brigadier General Folmer finished with a message to the new DCOM/COS: “It is a difficult job, fourteen different locations, twenty three different nationalities, all working together, but it is a great job! I wish you all the luck you need and I am sure that they all will support you.”

Brigadier General Luigi Carpineto, after taking over his responsibility as the NCISG Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, in his response to the NCISG Commander expressed deep gratitude for the honor of being the new Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the NCISG. He thanked Brigadier General Hans Folmer for his support during last two weeks and for sharing his experience and knowledge.

The NCISG flag, which had flown at HQ KAIA RESOLUTE SUPPORT (RS), was handed over to Major General Frank Schlösser, Commander of the NATO CIS Group (NCISG) on 19 August 2021 by Lieutenant Colonel Adam Ennis, the final RS Signal Commander and currently the Commander of the CIS Service Unit, NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA). The return of the flag to HQ NCISG marks the end of NCISG’s presence in the RESOLUTE SUPPORT Mission, Afghanistan.

Major General Schlösser recognised that the mission had been challenging, but the broad range of expertise and knowledge held by NCISG personnel, as well as their ability to work together as a team, had eased the burden somewhat. He took the opportunity to thank all the NCISG personnel, in collaboration with CIS partners from NCIA and THALES, who over the years had deployed in support of the Mission.

Brigadier General Luigi Carpineto, NCISG Deputy Commander/Chief of Staff (DCOM/COS) and Command Sergeant Major Peter Knöringer, NCISG Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL), also attended the ceremony.

The NATO-led non-combat RESOLUTE SUPPORT mission was launched on 12 December 2014; NCISG commitment to Afghanistan endured until end of June 2021. The mission was established at the invitation of the Afghan government and in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution no. 2189 of 2014. Its purpose was to help Afghan security forces as well as various other institutions to develop the capacity to defend Afghanistan and protect its citizens in a sustainable manner, which it did until its withdrawal of forces.”

After two years of absence, Tanks in Town made its comeback On Saturday 28th

and Sunday 29th of August. Dozens of tanks including those from the War Heritage Institute were on display as the city center becomes a living museum of World War II armored vehicles.

Favorable weather, a team of motivated volunteers and meticulous organization by the Royal Mons Auto Moto Club which holds this event for 20 years. The Tanks in Town weekend in Mons kept all its promises.

To reach the site, a London double-decker bus transported an enthusiastic and curious public to discover these funny cars which roll in water without sinking. Stress-free, at least for the driver. A special, impressive ride, and beneficial learning and visitors convinced of the educational scope of the approach.

Visitors had the chance to go back in time and immerse themselves in the American atmosphere of an authentic Liberation Ball. To implement this event, the volunteers did not count their hours, it was a real success.

When should I contact ACCI?

Over the past year, the Allied Command Counterintelligence team has worked hard to ensure everyone is aware of things to look out for to keep yourself and your family safe from adversaries who may want to know more than they should about our great community. However, are you certain that you know when to reach out to one of ACCI’s agents? Here, we outline four common examples of times when you will want to contact a counterintelligence professional as soon as you can.

Keep Your Eye Open:

1. Someone you aren’t familiar with is asking you more questions about work then they should. People move in and out of the SHAPE community all of the time. Because of this, newcomers and visitors always have questions. “Where is the best place to live,” “How often will I travel in my new position,” or “Is there a large community of people from my home country?” These are all normal inquiries anyone may have about a new posting. However, you are asked by a stranger how often your spouse travels for work and to specific places, or if someone asks about access you may have to important meetings or information, this is something a counterintelligence agent will want to discuss further. 2. If you have received a call from a suspicious number outside of normal business. In an international community such as SHAPE, it is quite normal to receive calls and texts from many different nations, as we plan birthday parties, or schedule meetings. However, if you receive a call, text, message or social media inquiry from a person or number you are not familiar with, and cannot attribute to another part of your daily life, contact a counterintelligence agent to find out it is more than an erroneous contact.

The adversary is always creating new ways of attempting to find out more information than they are allowed to have. In general, if you see something in the community that you deem a threat to the security, contact ACCI. Allow your counterintelligence professionals to identify threats and keep you and your family safe.

3. If you are traveling to a country outside of the European Union or NATO Alliance. As restrictions ease for travel under COVID, fascinating destinations have once again piqued our interests. Certain destinations want to know more about you than your COVID status. Find out if your next destination is a place to watch for anomalies with border security. Make sure to contact a ACCI agent before you depart.4. You were a victim of a significant theft while traveling. For most petty theft, make sure you contact the security services both in the host country and here at SHAPE. However, if the theft was abnormal: your passport was stolen, your hotel room was clearly rifled through, or your safe was broken into, please contact ACCI upon your return.

If you think you need to speak with ACCI, contact us at:

Legal News!

70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OTTAWA AGREEMENT 1951Year 2021 heads to its end and throughout this year we have lived different events (e.g. Pandemic, Geopolitical Conflicts, Financial Crisis, among others) they demonstrate, once again how fragile peace and stability are. Two years ago, NATO celebrated its 70th anniversary and the Alliance’s legal framework have proven stronger than ever since its particular institutionalization has enabled NATO to adapt to current strategic competition and hybrid threats manifestation (hybrid warfare and gray zone environments). One of the most recent examples is the efficient response of NATO to the COVID-19 and to the recent evacuation of Afghan citizens.

The business continuity of the Alliance would not be possible without a robust legal framework. However, newcomers always wonder why NATO’s legal structure is so complex; its nature must be understood as twofold: The Alliance and the Organization. NATO is made by the three different international organizations with a distinct legal position, which are: The ‘Organization’ (International Staff/International Military Staff and the Agencies) and two Supreme Headquarters (SHAPE and HQ SACT). This particularity can also be seen in other International Organizations such as the United Nations or the World Bank.

At the ‘Organization’ (known colloquially as the NATO HQ, located in Brussels), the political control is exercised over the organization through the North Atlantic Council (‘NAC’) which meets at several levels. In relation to the Supreme Headquarters, SHAPE is in charge of NATO operations all around the world. On the other hand, HQ SACT focuses on strategic thinking, development of capabilities, education, training and exercises. This September we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Agreement on the Status of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, National Representatives and International Staff, signed in Ottawa on 20 September 1951 (‘Ottawa agreement’), which is the conventional instrument that regulates the functioning of the ‘Organization’. The Ottawa agreement is not applicable to any international military headquarters (‘IMHQs’)

e s t a b l i s h e d i n pu r su ance of t h e North Atlantic Treaty nor, unless the NAC decides otherwise, to any other military bodies (Article 2), as these IMHQs are ruled by the Paris Protocol 1952. It is very important to bear in mind that not all IMHQs fall automatically under the Paris Protocol as the NAC must activate them in accordance with Articles 1 and 14 of the Paris Protocol, meanwhile ‘subsidiary bodies’ fall under the Ottawa Agreement. However, it can be possible that some NATO entities change status from the Protocol to become Ottawa agreements in the course of reorganizations, as happens with some NATO civilian agencies that rely on both agreements (as enshrined in their Charters).

In the last years, ACO has faced different challenging litigations. These difficult circumstances have proven once again the interconnection of the three general multilateral instruments (e.g. NATO SOFA, Paris Protocol and Ottawa agreement), whose travaux préparatoires are an important feature to be count on NATO’s interests defence. In order to preserve NATO’s functioning, whenever international organizations are sued in courts, invocation of immunities is a necessary step beforehand. The Paris Protocol defines Supreme Headquarters institutional privileges and immunities, which are complemented by the Ottawa Agreement and the NATO SOFA. Some of the privileges and immunities, particularly for Headquarters staff members, rely on the NATO SOFA being applied mainly through Article 3, paragraph 2, of the Protocol.

www.shape2day.com 23SCL

Reference: https://www.difesa.it/EN/Primo_Piano/Pagine/minister_guerini_visits_afghanistan.aspx

In addition, through a comprehensive reading of the supplementary agreements to the Paris Protocol which have been completed between SHAPE and NATO member states, several areas can be identified that draw directly from the Ottawa Agreement provisions where the other multilateral treaties (NATO SOFA and Paris Protocol) remain silent, and hence proving that Ottawa Agreement legal consequences also apply, as default rule, to IMHQs such as privileges and immunities of high-ranking officers or the possibility of waiver of immunities. The Ottawa Agreement is paramount to properly read the Paris Protocol. For instance, the Paris Protocol does not explicitly refer to the whole set of privileges and immunities provisions in the same way as enshrined in the NATO SOFA or the Ottawa agreement. In order to fill in such gap, the NAC (through its Deputies Council) tasked a working group, led by France and SHAPE, to complete a report on the implementation of the Paris Protocol: Document D-D(52)2 on the ‘Protocol on the Status of Allied Headquarters’ of 3 January 1952, which summarizes all the previous Allies’ discussions on the Paris Protocol. It needs to be highlighted paragraph 26 of D-D(52)2, which confirms that the Paris Protocol full reading needs to be done by reference to both the NATO SOFA and the Ottawa Agreement. We have already embraced the third decade of the 21st century and we are witnessing changes in legal operations and strategic competition where non-conventional methods start to proliferate such as indirect and multidisciplinary approaches (civil and military, legal and illegal, kinetic and non-kinetic…etc). The institutional architecture of

international organizations like NATO can be at risk due to these challenges and legal advisors (particularly those placed within the Alliance) must have a clear institutional picture, knowing the purpose both internally and externally as well as its own rights and obligations and its ability to act both in the international and domestic arenas and how the different fields are covered, which

may include activities, inter alia, to carry out the mission given by its constituents in form of ‘competence’ such as bringing claims, conclusion of treaties, establishment of diplomatic relations, contract goods and services for its activities within and outside NATO members’ territories, hire individuals from NATO and non-NATO countries for its operations, etc. Within the Alliance, nations, commanders and civilian staff as well must count on a rule of law system stable, reliable and predictable before any legal action or unforeseen circumstances arise against the organization. Keeping an international organization like NATO, institutionally speaking, legally resilient, is a priority to establish and maintain a fluid and sincere dialogue among

the different units and divisions in order to cover all 360-degree areas that remain within the noble tasks mandated by the North Atlantic Council to the organization and supreme military headquarters.

The NATO ACO Office of Legal Affairs continues working hard to accomplish the tasks mandated by the NAC to the ACO Command Group and presents its respect to NATO nations for their continuous and virtuous contribution that has made possible the functioning of the Alliance throughout all these seven decades.

We are NATO!

The next Guest Artist Series video presented by the SHAPE International Band is a tribute to the late Maynard Ferguson and features trumpet virtuoso Daniel Falcone performing Danny Boy. The son of Vincent Falcone, musical director, pianist and conductor for Frank Sinatra, he literally grew up on stage. Starting in high school, Daniel backed the likes of Tony Bennett, Rita Moreno, Jerry Lewis, George Burns, Andy Williams, Jack Jones, Paul Anka and many other headliners on the Las Vegas Strip.

After high school he moved to LA to attend USC and toured and played with some of the world’s finest orchestras, including the London Philharmonic. After his time at USC, Danny returned to Las Vegas, playing for many headliners and production shows until he was asked to join the Tom Jones band as the lead trumpet player in 1998. After a 2 year world tour, Dan returned to Las Vegas to perform in a Ricky Martin production, “Storm”, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. The musical director was Jerry Lopez, leader of the iconic band Santa Fe. A few years later, Dan joined Santa Fe and the Fat City Horns and has been with the band ever since.

Two years later, Dan joined Paul Anka full-time and toured for many years playing split-lead, then lead trumpet, recording two albums and a DVD. He then joined the Las Vegas production of the Broadway Musical “Hairspray.”

Dan performed with Toni Braxton for more than a year before joining the Las Vegas production of the Broadway

Cooking with Anna was a lifeline I didn’t see coming. Her Instagram, Facebook and online cooking classes coaxed me out of a cooking

comfort zone, fed my family and ironically brought me closer to a distant place, home.

When Anna’s class begins, the world outside the kitchen window is muted. The only sounds other than her delightful British accent are the ones being created over the kitchen counter: chopping, sizzling, scraping, bubbling, whisking, and stirring.

Upon conclusion, the dinner table will be set with a cornucopia of mouthwatering dishes like: pumpkin & sage cannelloni, pearl barley risotto, Russian pelmeni and Moroccan chicken stew. But it’s what unfurls from a tarnished and weary brain that causes a deep ravenous hunger. Remembrance. Cooking along with Anna I recall my Grandmother’s fried dough, Aunt Darlene’s gingersnap cookies, Mom’s lemon icebox pie and countless childhood days tugging at flour dusted aprons in hopes of being given a spatula or bowl

to lick clean. Like the dishes prepared (virtually) alongside Anna, these intangible morsels of youth are devoured; appetite satiated leaving a stomach and heart full, and longing for the next recipe to bring me closer again to the women who provided the Holy Trinity of ingredients: love, comfort and joy.

Regardless which side of the ocean my apron strings hang, the memory of the women who raised me are present, especially in the kitchen. Thank you Anna for bringing me home and making this girl from Louisiana remember something forgotten; like the beet and turnip, I too have roots.

Upcoming online classes through Zoom include: Creamy Risotto, Osso Buco with Polenta and Middle Easter starters. And if you love fish, you should check Anna’s “Fish Marathon’’ classes!

Anna was kind and offered to share one of my favorite fall recipes, Pumpkin Cannelloni. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

LIFE IN ISSBy Mélanie Dutat

Dear Samuel, can you explain to us a little bit about your career at SHAPE up until today?

I started in 2015 as Senior Project Controller. I was previously working as an Architect for the United Nations, managing large scale projects,

This month, we decided to have a look at The Works Coordination and Inspection (WCI) Cell, responsible for the management of constructions projects. It is part of the Infrastructure Management (IMS) Section and it includes Project Management and the Drawing Office. The Cell Head leads a team of four Project Managers, three draftsmen and one Admin Clerk. WCI works in coordination with the IMW Section, Host Nation (HN), NCIA and other NATO entities, for the delivery of engineering related maintenance projects all over SHAPE.

so the adaptation was not really difficult. Since the beginning we, Project Controllers, tried to adapt our posts to our real duties. After a few years navigating the bureaucracy, we were finally recognized as Project Managers.

You are now the Cell Head of WCI. What exactly does WCI take care of and what are your daily tasks and responsibilities?

The WCI Cell is responsible for managing multidisciplinary engineering related projects. We, together with the IMW section, are the primary receivers of all construction work requests through SF8,s. (Request documents to send to helpdesk).

We deal with a huge variety of projects, from painting an office, to the challenging renovation of the main gym, which included the complete replacement of floor, roof, lighting and ventilation, as well as other work.

As part of my duties as Cell Head, I personally analyse and distribute all work requests we receive. The Project Managers do the hard part, organizing & overseeing the execution of each project, whilst I focus on the larger picture, more as Programme Manager.

The Drawing Office provides all required documents, such as digging permits, regarding building blueprints and the location of utilities.

Other than purely running projects, WCI is the primary technical unit in BSG. We are the technical advisors whenever the BSG needs to provide a professional engineering opinion.

ISS means Infrastructure, Storage and Supply

You lead a team of 4 project Managers. Do you all have different specialisations? Are you working in different departments?

We have two Project Managers responsible for all electrical, communications and security systems infrastructure projects, Mr Decock and Mr Guerreiro. One for mechanical projects (ventilation, boilers, air conditioning), Mr Jobin and Mr Clark, a civil engineer, dealing with a wide range of projects, mostly civil work. They also all manage multidisciplinary projects keeping in constant coordination within the Cell.

Some projects present specific IT requirements and are managed by or with the support of the ISS Software and Process Office, run by Mr Vereecke.

I, as Cell Head, don’t take projects on my own any more. My job is to ensure PMs don’t find obstacles in their way so they can perform their duties without impediments.

What is WCI’s Admin Clerk responsible for?

Our Admin Clerk, Ms Caldow, is essential for the proper functioning of our small cell. She is the centralized HUB and POC for WCI. All documents flow from and to her. Communication between WCI and contractors, clients or other ISS units pass through our Admin Clerk. She is also responsible for creating and updating projects on ISS technical software (IEMS), which is crucial for the correct management of all projects.

With the Coronavirus, we have had a complicated year and a half. How could you manage the monitoring of your projects? Did you suffer delays?

It was not easy at the beginning. We were supposed to stay at home but we did not

have the equipment for teleworking. The fact that all non-essential activities stopped during those months definitely did not help with the execution of the annual programme. We suffered delays and even cancellations of many projects, but our team pulled together and managed to complete a number of significant projects, like the West Gate & Zagreb road blockers and the gym. A major re-adjustment was needed in order to adapt the initial planning we had for 2020, 2021 and even 2022. We are still dealing with the consequences.

How could you continue to follow-up on projects? Did you keep a team on call at SHAPE?

We are lucky we have IMW Section at our side, because they respond to urgent calls even if it’s something related to any of our projects. WCI doesn’t provide 24/7 service, but rather a reactive one. We have our tools to monitor the execution of our projects, following pre-approved planning. We conduct regular meetings with the contractors, we visit the site and we try to have close contact with the requestor, so we leave little room for the unforeseen. During times with reduced manpower, emails and phone calls replaced meetings and site visits.

How do you see the future of your Cell? What are your expectations or objectives?

WCI might evolve to an intermediate unit between the HN and SHAPE (which we are now, by the way). Whatever the outcome, The Project Managers and Drawing Office will keep providing the valid service we do in WCI, project by project making SHAPE a better place to live and work.

Dear Johan, how long have you been working as a supervisor for the Drawing Office at SHAPE? What are your principal tasks?

Actually, I joined the drawing office as a contractor in 1991 to help with the startup of the CAD system (CAD stands for Computer Aided Design). At that time this office was in the middle of a process of digitizing all hand drawn diagrams. As you can imagine, this was a tremendous task which took a couple of years to realize. In the meantime, I was hired by SHAPE as a CAD system manager and since 2012 I have been leading this team, under the supervision of the WCI Cell Head. Being in charge of the CAD system I manage the software licenses, users accounts and maintenance contracts for the office equipment. I also give guidance to my co-workers on the use of the system.

What is the job of your team?

We make up a solid team of 3 draftsmen (one lady actually): 2 LWR’s and 1 GBR military position (OR-4), each of us with specific technical skills complementing one another. So the focus can be on civil, electrical or mechanical work when it comes to creating or modifying drawings. SHAPE infrastructure is constantly changing so drawings need to be updated accordingly. When necessary, we conduct site surveys to verify the accuracy of our drawings or to check the correctness of the information we receive. It is also important that we can provide accurate drawings showing underground utilities networks. During excavation works it is of course necessary to know the location of gas and water pipes, electrical cables and communication lines etc. Therefore, our office helps ISS in preparing the so called Digging Permit to authorize these excavation works.

In order to get the drawings up-to-date, how does all that information reach the Drawing Office?

Most project data can be filtered from In-House project files and contractors’ as-built documents. In case of requests for Self-Help projects, the client provides WCI Project Management with sketches of the works they have executed. Also, thanks to the close collaboration with the Asset Manager, the exchange of information results in building up both the CAD database as well as the SHAPE Registry.

Finally, you could say that any member of ISS can be considered as ‘the eyes’ of the branch and bring to our attention any change he or she would notice on camp.

Do you have a lot of requests? From whom? What is required most of the time?

ISS deals with many projects executed by the IMW workshops and through contracts. At the start of a project the Drawing Office can provide IMW shops foremen or WCI Project Managers with all possible drawings needed to study and plan the work. We can share for each installation at SHAPE a general layout plan together with their electrical and mechanical detailed sketches. The most popular request coming from any possible entity at SHAPE is the one for the general map of the base showing all buildings, installations, streets, sidewalks etc. But also, very often people like to have a drawing of the building they occupy to help them manage or improve their workspace.

Interview with:Johan Collijs – Drawing Office Supervisor *

I thank Mr Prats and Mr Collijs for their collaboration. I hope you had a good start for September. I will be happy to present you a new office next month. See you soon…

Nurturing human connections for well-being and happinessThe SHAPE American High School has made their theme for the school year, ‘Staying Connected’. I think that at SHAPE, we would all benefit from this being our theme for the next year.

According to Josh Cohen, author of self help book, ‘How to Live. What to do.’, lockdown has resulted in a contraction of life. It’s as though our lives have shrunk and we need to find ways to expand our lives again.

The stress of uncertainty from dealing with the threat of covid has taken its toll on people, leaving many of us to feel exhausted. We all are influenced by different drives in our lives. The life drive, according to Cohen, impels us to create, make connections with others, and seek to expand our lives. Lockdown was designed to preserve our lives and it led us to move away from life. This results in a feeling of being “sluggish’’. It leads us to shutting down rather than opening up.

If this describes you, psychologists advise that you get out into the world and have as many rich, varied experiences and interactions as possible. A life filled with novel experiences and intellectual engagement is an enriching life that supports a strong sense of well-being.

Belgian Friendship ProgrammeWe are currently exploring ways to strengthen and enrich the relationship between SHAPE and the Belgian community.

The Belgian Friendship Programme will involve opportunities to bring together SHAPIANS and Belgian’s around language, culture and food. We have introduced some Language Conversation groups - please join Facebook Group @SHAPE Language Buddies. We have also started a conversation about hosting International Food events - please join Facebook @SHAPECookbookClub.

If you are interested in learning more or getting involved, please email Ingrid Covington at [email protected].

A very nice souvenir…Once upon a time, a teacher called Cécile wanted to change her way of teaching because she thought that it wasn’t in tune anymore with the society around her. Unfortunately, she understood quickly that she wouldn’t be able to do it in her current school and knew that she had to move to a new environment. She tried to do so but there were no jobs available in the surrounding area, so she became very disappointed.

Then, she thought to call Pierrette, a friend of hers, knowing that the natural enthusiasm and joy her friend exudes, would help her to get her courage back. What a surprise when Pierrette told Cécile that she was looking for people to collaborate in a new project: the organization of meetings between people from SHAPE and Belgians, so that each other could learn about one other’s culture, language, way of life and cooking, breaking at the same time their loneliness and making progress in another language! If she wanted to, Cécile could go with her for a meeting with Ingrid Covington, who had more or less the same idea as Pierrette, with her Belgian Friendship Programme at SHAPE!

What an opportunity! Cécile didn’t hesitate a second and went with Pierrette the day after to SHAPE HQ.

And she didn’t regret it! The three women had a wonderful time together: Ingrid had planned a meeting with Chrystelle Petitjean, who cares for the SACEUR’s public relations and we spoke together about a lot of new ideas to cement the project. They even shared the ideas with Colonel Ryan Raymond, who seemed to be as enthusiast as we were!

At the end of the day, Cécile felt much better and came back with her head full of dreams for her pupils and her lessons! Thanks to everybody!”

www.shape2day.com 35SCL

How do you do this at SHAPE? Meeting new people is a great way to stimulate our brains and re-energise positive emotional connections. Starting a new hobby or interest is a great way to meet new people with shared interests. Do you like to walk with your dog? Perhaps you enjoy visiting cities and eating local dishes? Or maybe you want to learn a new language? There are so many ways to meet new people, develop a varied social life and form fulfilling relationships at SHAPE. We have a full range of sports and activities, a Language Centre with buddy programmes and conversation groups, cooking clubs, volunteer programme’s. If it doesn’t exist, you could be the one to introduce it! You could be the creator of FTL- Friends That Lunch, or FTH - Friends That Hike, or FTBL - Friends That Bike and Lunch! Take a little time to reflect on what it is that makes you happy, and let that guide how you choose to spend your time.

What we need to avoid is the blurring of one day into the next. During lockdown our experiences lacked ‘distinctiveness’. Now that we are no longer in lockdown, it’s a good habit to create some definition and structure to our days and weeks. Our brains wake up in the presence of other people. This might be virtual contact, such as a telephone call or a messenger chat.

Friendships at SHAPE

This is my view from a restaurant in the sunny Mons Grand Place yesterday. Whilst drinking a cup of tea, I used it as an opportunity to make contact with friends old and new, to share my news and to let them know that I was thinking of them.

Discovering, creating, and maintaining deep connections to others is a skill that many feel ill equipped for after too much time spent in isolation and on social media. Close friendships and partnerships provide untold benefits. We find fun, happiness, understanding, laughter, compassion, challenge, encouragement, affection, and love. When we are deeply connected to others, our moods, health, and lives are improved. Whilst the weather is still good and the Rendezvous is still open, inviting someone for coffee might be just what you need to cement a friendship that you will cherish for years to come.

So, it’s in our best interest to cultivate deep and meaningful friendships. If we develop and nurture meaningful relationships, it will guide our children to do the same.

SHAPE Fest, 18 September, will be a wonderful way for you to learn about the activities that exist in the community. The SHAPE International Women’s Club (SIWG) will also be hosting a coffee morning - details to be confirmed. Contact [email protected] for more information or to share your suggestions for new groups and programmes.

Staying Connected at SHAPE High SchoolThe SHAPE American High School, whose theme for this school year is ‘Staying Connected’, started the year with a bang! The energy and spirit that permeated the school on Friday was infectious! All the students involved in athletics programme’s arrived at school in their SPARTAN uniforms.

Sports are a great way to build meaningful and lasting connections through a shared interest and common goal. If you don’t play a sport, supporting the SPARTAN spirit through attending games and encouraging the teams, is vital to the team’s performance. Sports teams always prefer to play ‘home’ games because that is where the team belongs and where they feel the most love and support!

By KISA, Gokay G. OF-3 TUR-Army

The first information about Turkish military music was found in the Orkhon inscriptions1. The sentence “The tug2 was erected, and the nevbet3 struck” in Compendium of the Languages of the Turks4 is a crucial indicator that the Turkish States continue this tradition. Karakhanids later adopted this tradition from Ghaznavids. This tradition passed to the Seljuks then to their successors, the Ottomans.

There is no specific source about the establishment of the Ottoman Mehter organization. The rumor begins with the Seljuk Sultan sending a drum and a banner to Osman Gazi to symbolize accepting Ottoman domination. Nizameddin Sami, who wrote the records of the Ankara Battle in the 15th Century, mentions in his book Zafername that both Timurids and Ottomans played music during the battle.

Mehter organization took on an official structure during the reign of Sultan Mehmet II. After the conquest of Istanbul, Sultan Mehmet II ordered to strike three times a day in Demirkapı, Eyüp, Kasımpaşa, Galata, Tophane, Beşiktaş, Rumelihisarı. With the expansion of the territory of the state, mehter Bands of the Grand Viziers and viziers were also formed. The number of the Mehter Bands reached 240 from time to time. During the battles, this number was doubled.

When the fighting begins, Mehter Band plays with tremendous enthusiasm to increase the soldiers’ courage and instill fear in the enemy.

Especially in the sieges, they would continue to play until the morning at the bottom of the walls to avoid putting the opponent to sleep. Additionally, Mehter Band would continue to serve in the retreat or defeat of the army and leave its place after the last unit retreated. For this reason, after the battle of Vienna5, the instruments of the whole Band were captured. Therefore; some musical instruments, especially the drums were improved and introduced in the western orchestras. Famous composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Weber, Rossini and Saint-Saens, called the three Viennese classics, composed compositions using rhythm and tune to remind Ottoman military music, which they called them Alla Turca.

Mehter Bands consisted of divisions within themselves.

These divisions were determined according to the

musical instrument played or the task.

Mehter Bands were sheltered in Mehterhane.

Mehterhanes were located in the barracks in big cities.

The number of each instrument in the mehter team

was called kat, and the Band’s size was expressed in

“kat” levels.

The size of the Mehter Band was measured by its

representation. Since there were nine pieces of

each instrument in the sultan’s mehter, it was known

as the nine kat mehter. This number was increased

to twelve over time.

Music contains an intrinsic element conducive to promoting moral or spiritual harmony and order in the soul. Due to this effect, going to wars with music was beneficial in frightening the enemy, leading to a musical organization in the armies. Although it

is possible to come across many of these organizations in Turkish history, their history dates back to the 8th Century.

Mehter Band Playing

Therefore, the mehter Bands of the Grand Vizier, Viziers, and bannermen had minor kat levels than the mehter Band of the Sultan.

Mehter Band’s clothes were chosen from eye-catching colors. Mehter aghas6 used to wear a red jacket with a hood and long sleeves, a red broadcloth salwar suit on their legs, yellow shoes on their feet, and a red turban on their heads.

On the other hand, the musicians wore a purple, navy blue, or black broadcloth vest, red cloth shalwar, and red shoes, and a green turban on their heads.

Mehter Band’s walks were as remarkable as his clothes. They were start walking with the right foot, stop after three steps and turn to the right, then start walking again with the left foot and turn left again after three steps.

Mehter Bands consist of different instruments. These are: shawms (tur. Kaba zurna), reed wind instruments with a drastic sound, and a whole range of percussion instruments: a big drum (tur. Davul), timpani (tur. Kydym), cymbals and sistrum.

Mehter Bands gathers in a crescent shape to strike Nevbet, drummers in the middle, cymbalists behind them, and other players around them. Mehterbasi Agha comes to the middle of the crescent with a zurna in his hand, greets the Band, and orders to play.

Mehter music is original and national music. Mehter tunes and lively melodies had a significant impact on the morale of the soldiers. The oldest of today’s Mehter tunes was composed in the XVI century. Today, this music is known as the Mehter March and continues.

With the abolition of the Janissary corps in 1826, the Mehter Bands were also removed. And the Mızıka-ı Hümayun, which took the European Bands as an example, was introduced. Since then, Mehter Bands have continued their duties symbolically and participates in several special occasions such as national days, celebrations, and ceremonies.

The Official Mehter Band currently serves as a military band under the Turkish General Staff. It continues its daily performances at the Military Museum in Istanbul at the old Military Academy Building, where Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of Turkey, graduated. When you visit Istanbul, I highly recommend you adding the Harbiye Military Museum, which displays the history of the Turkish Armed Forces, into your itinerary and experience the unique Mehter Band performance.

Before you start, remove jewelry; wash your Hands for 20 seconds under hot water pay particular attention to the webs between the fingers and the nails.

Wear single use latex free gloves. There should be No Bare Hand Contact with Ready to Eat Foods. Change gloves when they become torn/damaged, are heavily soiled, when you change tasks, or have touched bare skin. Wash hands between glove changes.

Do not eat, smoke, chew gum or drink from an open container on the food serving line, or in food preparation areas. Wear a hat/ hair covering and clean protective apron or clothes.

Use one utensil on one food type only; do not use the same utensil on multiple food types this can lead to cross-contamination of food and food borne illness.

Change your serving utensils every 4 hours, or when they become heavily soiled, or when you change to a tray of new food. Rinse, wash and sanitize your utensils before reusing them in new food.

Remember the 4-hour rule, Keep hot food HOT, above 140°F or 60°C. Keep cold food COLD, below 40°F or 5°C. Food that has been exposed to temperature abuse (not being held outside of the Danger Zone - 40°F or 5°C up to 140°F or 60°C ) Hot food should be either rapidly reheated to 165°F or 74°C for 15 seconds within 2 hours, or discarded the food at four hours from when it was removed from safe temperature control.

SHAPE Fest is just behind the corner and it is a right moment to speak about Foodborne illnesses and their prevention. It is an exciting event, however one of the biggest draws to these events is the many different types of foods and

drinks available and their protection.

Use only clean sanitized food containers. Do not add fresh food to old food. Do not add freshly prepared food to empty and soiled food containers. Do not overfill chafing dishes, or holding pans, more than a double layer is too much, they will not keep the food at the correct temperature; this then promotes a risk of bacterial growth and food borne ill ness. Keep your serving area clean

Use single use tableware; do not allow used tableware back to the serving line for refills. This can cause cross contamination of foods. Instruct clientele to change to a new set of tableware.

Single use Knives, Forks and Spoons should be presented with the handle towards your clientele. This prevents contamination of the blade, tangs and bowl from clientele picking up the utensils.

If handling money or working a cash register you must WASH YOUR HANDS AND CHANGE YOUR GLOVES BEFORE GOING BACK TO HANDLING FOOD. Money is a contaminated with bacteria, the bacteria are easily transferred from money, to hands and food. Good hand washing and glove wear practices helps prevent the spread of bacteria to food.

Stay safe!

Remember most food borne illness outbreaks are caused by poor food handler practices. Do not be the cause.

Help to prevent COVID – 19 spread: Wear a mask to protect yourself and others; Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arm lengths) from others who do not live with you; Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated spaces; Clean your hands often, either with soap and water for 20 seconds or a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol; Avoid close contact with people who are sick; Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

Bonus: Hangover tips- Eat a good breakfast Eating a good breakfast can help maintain your blood sugar levels, provide important vitamins and minerals and reduce the symptoms of a hangover.

- Get plenty of sleep. Alcohol consumption may interfere with sleep. A lack of sleep could contribute to hangover symptoms such as fatigue, irritability and headaches.

- Stay hydrated. Drinking alcohol can cause dehydration, which may make some hangover symptoms worse. Staying hydrated could reduce hangover symptoms like thirst, fatigue, headache and dizziness.

- Some supplements, including red ginseng, prickly pear, ginger, borage oil and eleuthero, have been studied for their ability to decrease hangover symptoms.

The best way to avoid hangovers is to drink in moderation or abstain completely.

Trabzon has sheltered numerous civilizations and has rich cultural, artistic and sporting offerings. A trade and transport center, the city has preserved its unique position as the center of the vicinity throughout history.

Located on the historical Silk Road, Trabzon is a natural beauty ornamented with unique charms, an open-air museum where throughout the centuries several civilizations left a lot behind. Trabzon is a city boasting a perfect harmony of greenness and blueness; with its high plateaus by the coast of the Black Sea.

Because of its Silk Road location, Trabzon became a melting pot of religions, languages and cultures for centuries, and a trade gateway to Iran in the East, Russia and Caucasus to the North. Venetians and Genoese visited Trabzon, selling silk, linen and woolen fabric. During the Ottoman period the city became a focal point for trade to Iran, India, Russia and Caucasus thanks to the importance of its port.

Trabzon, historically and socio-culturally the most important center of Eastern Black Sea Region, has a history of approximately 5000 years. It is believed that the founders of the city came to Trabzon from Middle Asia by passing over the Caucasus.

Starting from 1071, The Seljuks controlled large parts of Anatolia and their attacks resulted in the Seljuks’ gradual control of large parts of Trabzon region and the settlement of Cepni tribe of Oguzs on these lands. Being located on the historical Silk Road, Trabzon benefited commercially a lot during this period. Gradually, this made Trabzon richer and, therefore, attracted the Genoese and Venetian merchants. On 15th August 1461, Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror conquered Trabzon to help achieve the unity of Turkey needed to control the gateway to

Trabzon is one of the major cities of Turkey and the biggest one in the Eastern Black Sea region. Its population is over 800

thousand, living on an area of 4,664 km2. Due to the rainy climate even in the summer months, it has lots of green forests and mountains with many rivers and highlands. There are major roads connecting Trabzon to other cities, a big harbor for international shipping traffic in the Black Sea, and an international airport. The city is famous for its fish, football (soccer) team, and the Sumela Monastery.

the east (Iran) and north (Caucasia-Crimea). Since then, Trabzon has continued its significance as a gate opening to the east.

Trabzon is a city of tradition. The folk dances of the region, known as the “Horon” are renowned, and are danced by men and women, young and old alike. The Horon is accompanied by traditional music played on a type of small violin with three strings called ‘kemençe’. It is often accompanied by drums, horns and shepherd’s flutes. In Trabzon folklore, the mountain pasture festivals play an important role. In the mountains the mountain pastures, like a chain, entertains these festivals every year. The groups composed of men and women arrive in the mountain pastures with their cattle and sheep, and begin festivals by setting a big “şölen” (feast). Nearly everybody joins the horon, accompanied by kemençe. In these festivals, the women, wearing colorful regional clothes, and decorated animals are really worth seeing.

Trabzon is the emerald green city of the Black Sea Coast. Spread along the shores of the Black Sea, Trabzon has a climate typical of the region. In summer the temperature is pleasantly cool, and in winter it is mild. It has a relatively high rainfall all year round, producing a landscape of lush greenery. Dense pine forests cover the mountains, and an abundance of crops flourish in the lower elevations and valleys. The area is home to many beautiful species of plant and wildlife, many unique to the region. The mountainous hinterland contains passes and high pastures set amid spectacular summits, and is suitable for plateau tourism. Trabzon has a very rich flora, and about 440 endemic plants thrive in the region.

Trabzon is also known for its local style of architecture. There are some historical sites worth visiting and seeing, such as ‘Ortahisar’ in Trabzon; ‘Orta Mahalle’ in Akçaabat; and others in Araklı and in Sürmene in the Eastern part of Trabzon where the historical tissue has been protected. The original architecture suits the climate and geographic features of the area. For instance the native or foreign travelers who came to the city in the past centuries, praise the mansions built within large yards, mosques erected with high elegance, and clean streets paved in special stones called ‘Albanian pavement’. The mansions built in wood or stone in the city center are generally double floored. The walls overlooking the sea are laid in stone while the others are built in both wood and stone. The roofs are laid in tiles and their fringes are made large because of the rain fall. The inner parts of the houses are decorated in hand-crafted wood carving or woodworks which look very nice and seem to show higher craftsmanship. The yards of the mansions which are quite aesthetic and follow one another in sequence are very large, tidy, and decorated by various fruit and plants with ornaments.

The museums, mosques, monasteries, tombs, inns, baths, bedestans and citadel surrounding the city, examples of civil architectures, bazaars, have been woven to the history of the Trabzon as an embroidery. Called as “Magnificent” by the Westerns, Süleyman The Magnificent was born in Trabzon and was brought up there until he was 15 years old. Atatürk visited the city three times and decided to bestow all his property and wealth to the Turkish Nation in this pavilion. There are many kinds of historical monuments which still stand in Trabzon. Besides the historical and cultural monuments, lakes, streams, mountains,

high plateaus, are the natural privileges for Trabzon. In addition to very many natural beauties created of rainy climate, hardworking historical monuments attract the visitors. Golden and silver, in the hands of the craftsmen from Trabzon, are melted and converted to the bracelet. Trabzon with its natural location historical monuments, ever green vegetation cover and year round opportunities is a valuable treasure worth seeing. Hazelnut, tea and maize are the main agricultural products, contributing to the city’s economy considerably. Anchovy which has always been a subject for poets has a special place in the city cuisine. Kuymak; made up of the mixture of corn flour with Trabzon’s butter and cheese maintains its special place in the local cuisine. Trabzon has an increasing importance as an international trade center, functioning as a bridge between the Caucasus, Central Asia and the West. With its university, modern port, international airport and tourism potential, Trabzon looks ahead a bright and prosperous future.

THE SUMELA MONASTERYTrabzon has hosted tens of civilizations throughout history, and as a result, it is home to a plethora of historical artifacts. The Sumela Monastery is undoubtedly the most remarkable among these works. This magnificent building is situated on a steep cliff in the Maçka district, within the borders of Altındere Village. Nestled in a steep cliff at an altitude of about 1,200 meters (3,900 ft) facing the Altındere valley, it is a site of great historical and cultural significance, as well as a major tourist attraction within Altındere National Park.

It is not known exactly, when the monastery was founded, but it dates around AD 386. During its long history, the monastery fell into ruin several times and was restored by various emperors.

Throughout the centuries, the Sümela Monastery has been influenced by many different civilizations.

During the date of the Ottoman Empire, the monastery also played a significant role. To show respect to the Monastery, the Ottoman sultans bestowed a variety of gifts on the monastery over many years. Sultan Selim I gave a gift of two large candlesticks and is known to be amongst those who undertook restoration work. As you wander around inside, it is possible to see the traces of different cultures, especially from an artistic perspective. One of the most important features of the monastery is that the interior is covered in frescoes, and these murals tell three distinct periods. There are many enchanting drawings on the walls, from the figure of the Virgin Mary to the Disciples, from Adam and Eve to the creation.

Following the conquest by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II in 1461, it was granted the sultan’s protection and given rights and privileges that were renewed by following sultans. The monastery remained a popular destination for monks and travelers through the years. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful monasteries on earth.

Today Sumela Monastery is a museum open to visitors from all over the world, and the restoration work is funded by the Turkish Government. The monastery’s primary function is as a tourist attraction. It overlooks forests and streams, making it extremely popular for its aesthetic attraction as well as for its cultural and religious significance.

Sumela Monastery is built on a steep cliff which has only one main entrance after numerous steps through a pathway. The ruins of the large aqueduct that once supplied water to the monastery can be seen at the side of the cliff at the entrance.

Turkish government allowed a church service to be held at Sumela Monastery once a year. Normally Sumela Monastery serves as a Museum but the opening of the doors of the Sumela Monastery for the mass is an act of courtesy on the part of the Turkish Government. Pilgrims from many countries come to Monastery every year for the mass.

The Sassi Neri beach is so called because of the presence of sedimentary black rocks.

Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle (Two Sisters Beach) is Sirolo’s most peculiar and well known beach, so named after two twin rocks raising from the water in front of it. In summertime it is reachable by boat from the port of Numana.

It is quoted by Legambiente in the list of the ten Italy’s most beautiful beaches. A unique event taking place there is the release of sea turtles on this beach.

There are three further beaches: Spiaggia dei Lavori, neighboring north the beach of the two sisters, with pebbles and stones , and two beautiful sandy bays, Spiaggia dei Forni and Spiaggia dei Gabbiani (respectively, Ovens Beach and Seagulls Beach). Spiaggia dei Frati owes its name to a nearby submerged reef , called “Shoal”, and is also called “Spiaggia del Bo’” (Ox Beach) because of a rock facing it that looks like an ox.

How can you describe the thousand facets of the only region with a plural name in Italy? The Marche region, overlooking the Adriatic Sea in central Italy, leaves a lasting mark on the visitor and invite him to slowly discover the enchanting ancient villages laid down on pleasant hills, thus being aware of this “Italy’s essence”: the sea, mountains, cities of art, ancient villages.

With its medieval hilltop towns, lush countryside, hearty cuisine and longstanding traditions, Le Marche is region that deserves to be recognized for its own history and cultural identity. That’s all of Italy wrapped up into one region!! So, this time we will travel to visit Sirolo!!

Sirolo is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Ancona in the Italian region of Marche.

The so-called “Pearl of the Adriatic”, Sirolo, located in the heart of the Riviera del Conero, is a picturesque medieval town, amidst the

green of Monte Conero and the blue of the Adriatic sea. Considered such a Pearl, due to its breathtaking scenery and beautiful beaches.

The town is situated near Monte Conero and in medieval times it was a castle which belonged to the Conti Cortesi family. It is a tourist destination, especially in summer times and it has continuously been awarded one of the eleven blue flags in the region of Marche since 1994. It features a restored medieval town centre, which culminates with a particular little square with view on the sea and on the Monte Conero. As tourist destination, Sirolo has many restaurants and bars. From the main square, there is a 10-minute walk to several beaches.

AttractionsIn its lovely medieval center must see attractions are: the church of San Nicola,

the Church of the Holy Rosary and the nineteenth century Teatro Cortesi. A short walk from the village, stands the Teatro alle Cave, a natural cave in the Conero Park, boasting interesting summer shows.

On the peak of Mount Conero you can admire the Romanesque Romanesque church of “Badia San Pietro”, founded by the Benedictines in the first half of the eleventh century. Sirolo boasts one of the most remote human presences in the Marche region. Since prehistoric times mysterious inhabitants left the signs of their presence dating back to 100,000 years ago.

The Piceni settled in this area during the Iron Age; in Sirolo there is a large archaeological necropolis (VI century BC.). One of the main find exhibited is the burial complex of the Sirolo’s Picene Princess (“Tomb of the Queen”); you can enjoy many activities in Sirolo like hiking, biking, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, diving, tennis, golf and birdwatching. One of the most important events taking place in Sirolo during the year is the Palio di San Nicola, Sirolo’s patron saint. The celebrations are in early May.

…and, in the surroundings you can visit many places, for example:

LoretoLoreto, one of the most important Roman Catholic Sanctuaries, a piece of Rome which has been embedded into the Marche landscape. With its majestic basilica - fortress that houses the Holy House if Nazareth

that according to legend, was the room in which the Blessed Virgin Mary received the Annunciation from the angel.

RecanatiRecanati with its omnipresent, Giacomo Leopardi, Poet. From the beautiful square named after him to the old tower and Mount Tabor which feature in his most famous poems. The famous hill of infinity, the village

square where the birthplace of the poet is located, “Palazzo Leopardi”, inhabited by his descendants even today, is home to the rich library of his study on “mad and desperate” with rare books and manuscripts. Recanati has also received the inheritance of the world famous tenor, Beniamino Gigli, and has dedicated a museum to his memory.

THE SPORTING LIFEO n the first day of August I woke up in

Poland. My trip however began a couple of days before when I jumped in my car

here in Belgium, pointed it east and stepped on the accelerator. I settled for the night in the German city of Kassel, about 500 kilometers from home. The football adventures would begin the next day. After a hearty hotel breakfast, it was time to add more kilometers to the odometer. My destination was Leipzig, which was just about a 250 km drive, still heading east. Originally I had hoped to see Bundesliga team RB (not Red Bull!) Leipzig play against Dutch side, Ajax. Fortunately I did my research and found out that this game was being played somewhere in Austria where both teams were still preparing for their soon to start seasons. All was not lost however because Lokomotive Leipzig were playing that afternoon against Carl Zeiss Jena. Both teams play in the local Regionalliga and their season had already started.

I got to the city with hours to spare but decided to make my way to the Bruno-Plache-Stadion first in hopes that I could buy my ticket and then have time to go into the city to have a look around and also find some food. I was successful although when I got to the window to buy the ticket, I was asked to fill out a form in German that I didn’t understand. It had to do with Covid protocols. When I returned a few hours later and showed my ticket to get in, I was told that I had to go to this table that was set up with about a half dozen kids in Lokomotive training gear on. They were to give me a bracelet to put on. The reason for this was that I was either double vaccinated or had a recent test. The young man that I spoke to didn’t understand English so he just gave me a confused look and the plastic bracelet. For the record, I have been double vaccinated.

The stadium was an old one, having opened up in 1922 and was in use for 70 years, until it was said to not meet security measures. That changed in 2004 and Lokomotive has been playing their home games there ever since. One of the stadiums highlights was when New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen performed there during his Reunion Tour in 1999.The atmosphere in the stadium was electric. I stood across from the main tribune among masked fans (except those drinking their beers) and soaked it all in as the teams came onto the field and got the proceedings underway. To be honest, so early into the new season, both teams were still trying to find their stride and meaningful attacks in the final third always came to nothing. In the end, I settled for a delicious curry wurst, a local beer and a scoreless draw. So I wandered out of the stadium, found my car and hit the road again. My hotel for the night was in the Polish city of Legnica. This was roughly

a 300 kilometers drive. The good thing is that Poland has very good motorways running along the southern part of the country. The bad thing is that you have to pay tolls for them. I don’t mind paying but I did mind spend a couple hours in traffic waiting for my turn to get to the toll gate to pay. I didn’t suffer that traffic however until the next day.The original plan was to find a place to eat some good Polish food, drink some local beers and then get a good night’s sleep before finishing my drive to my final destination in Presov, Slovakia. But I got lucky. I found a game just 75 kilometers away in the city or Wroclaw. Better still, the game kicked off at 1200 hours. The big team in the city is Śląsk Wrocław and they play in the Ekstraklasa, Poland’s top division. It wasn’t them that I was going to see but their reserve team, Śląsk Wrocław II. They play in the third division, which is the highest level that a reserve team can play in.

www.shape2day.com 49SCL

With little difficulty, I found Stadion Oporowska. The first team used to play here until 2011 when they moved to the brand spanking new Stadion Wrocław, that was built for the European Champion that Poland co-hosted with Ukraine in 2012. Fortunately the team kept their old stadium, built in 1926 when Wrocław was called Breslau and belonged to Germany. Finding the stadium was one thing; getting in was another. With nobody in line, I went up to the window and asked for a ticket to the game. A young lady who worked there, told me that they didn’t sell tickets to the game. They were only sold online. But first I had to sign up on the team’s page, which proved to be difficult. In the end I sorted it with some help. I managed to get under the cover of the main tribune before the rain started pouring down again. A beer or a coffee would have been nice but there was not a concession stand or a sausage to be found. So I settled in to a comfortable plastic seat and enjoyed the game as the players gave it all they had to entertain what turned out to be a pretty decent crowd on a rainy Polish afternoon. Hutnik Kraków managed to find the back of the net not long before the referee blew the whistle for the intermission. The second half was a wet one as the hosts did their best to look for the equalizer. It didn’t look like it would come and with it getting late, I started slowly walking towards the exit. Deep in stoppage time however, in the 97th minute, Śląsk was awarded a penalty which was converted to give the home side a hard fought point. My next game wasn’t until a few days later when brother-in-law Vlado and I travelled to the Slovak village of Raslavice to see the third division

team take on Odeva Lipany. This was a football stadium surrounded by hills in a very green setting with just one tribune. Stadium capacity, I was told, was 400. And fortunately there was beer and sausages. Lipany just missed promotion last season and Raslavice is just a village team, so we were expecting many goals from the visitors. When the home team went 2-0 up, the PA announcer had to reassure the fans that yes, the scoreboard is correct, we are winning! It didn’t last long however. Lipany fought back and managed to score twice before the final whistle. The home fans still seemed to be happy with a valuable point in the end. I was happy to see some goals. After my Slovak break, it was back to Belgium and back to work. Oh, and back to some more football games.I only managed two before the end of the month, and they were both Belgian Cup games. Both of them were at Stade Robert Urbain in the nearby town of Bossu. The stadium is the home of Royal Francs Borains, a third division team. They had been doing very well in cup games and won the two that I went to. Having gone this far into the competition, they’re hoping to be drawn against a big team such as Club Brugge or Anderlecht. I’m sure they’re under no delusions of beating these teams but such a game at home would guarantee ticket sales, and everybody knows that football clubs need money! It was a good month for football, catching games in four different countries though not seeing a lot of goals. But as we say in football, after a good game or a bad game, soon afterwards, we go again!

Half an Hour Gives Me Power is the perfect name for this group. It certainly has got me exercising more regularly and feeling more powerful. I used to compete in cross-country running, biathlon, soccer, and orienteering. My life used to be all about sports. And then after I had my children I stopped doing sports. I had all of the excuses: I need to do things for my children, I need to work late, I need to make dinner or clean my house. I had all the excuses but looking back they really were just excuses and we can all fit in 30 minutes a day with some flexibility and creativity. I started golf 1.5 years ago and this has started me exercising and getting moving again.

When I was younger I had it in my mind that for me to be exercising I had to be running hard or really tired after training. Half an Hour made me realize that exercise really can be just a 30 minute walk with my dog, or ping pong with my daughter or even bowling on the X-Box with my family.

Having turned 50 this year I welcome the extra motivation and support from our community to stay healthy and keep moving. And I think it is important that our children see us exercising and staying fit as this will instill in them the importance of staying healthy.

It is nice to have the support of our whole community but the positivity from Karin and Mariliis is catchy and it is easy to exercise with them behind us. And of course I love a good raffle and it is fun to watch every month hoping my husband or I have won. I love to see all of the pictures and comments of our community from around the world and I am very happy to be a part of this powerful community.

• Purchasing a fuel card means you have purchased 100 or 200 liters of fuel at a set price. You have until the card expires (generally 9 to12 months) to pump the fuel into your authorized vehicle(s). Please note the EXPIRY DATE on the face of your card.

• Belgium publishes a daily maximum cost per liter which businesses must not exceed. SHAPE contracts with Total to provide a fixed

monthly price. Your price will always be well below the maximum daily cost published by Belgium as it excludes taxes.

Please contact Mr. Thierry Weymers at SHAPE Ext. 3624 should you have any questions.
