533 E. Court, Seguin 830-379-7352

(Seguin) -- Protecting the City of Seguin’s infrastructure from cybersecurity threats is a top priority for the city’s IT Department. That level of protection in Seguin is now being recognized as one of the best in the country.

Recently, the city learned that its Seguin Cyber Champion Program will be recognized in the nation’s capital as one of the top 50 cybersecurity programs in the country. The city is officially the recipient of the prestigious 2022 CSO Online CSO50 Award.

Seguin in September is set to receive that award and be recognized during a special ceremony in Washington, D.C.

What might even be more impressive for the city of Seguin is that it is the only governmental

entity to be recognized in 2022.Shane McDaniel, director

of information and technology for the city of Seguin, says the city joins the elite list of several worldwide companies who will also be honored. Some of them include Adobe, Aflac, and Cisco.

“It’s a lot, I’ve seen some Fortune 500 names. I’m seeing a lot of big names United Airlines, Microsoft, of course, Zoom. These are all big global brands and I can’t believe it’s the city of Seguin named right alongside of it because to me, these corporations have just limitless budgets and all the resources in the world and they can pay their staff just wonderful salaries and what not and here we are the city of Seguin is right alongside of them so apparently, we are doing something right in

the name of cyber security as far as the way that we are protecting our environment and our citizens and the things that we are responsible for,” said McDaniel.

The CSO50 awards recognize security projects that demonstrate outstanding thought, leadership, and business value. The award recipients are determined by a panel of judges that include security leaders, industry experts, and academics.

McDaniel says this is truly an organizational award. He says cyber awareness has become embedded in the culture of Seguin. He says Seguin continues to punch above its weight class in so many ways, cybersecurity being the latest example. He says that’s why it is such a privilege to be a part of this organization.

2022 Sip ‘n Stroll Call for ArtistMugs to feature Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Chapel

(Seguin) -- The 2022 Sip n’ Stroll Committee and the Seguin Main Street Program invite local artists to submit artwork of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church’s historic chapel to be featured on the 2022 Sip n’ Stroll mug. The artwork should be an original piece and all mediums are welcome to be submitted. The artwork should fit a rectangle measuring 8” width x 4” height or a ratio similar to 2:1.

“This will be the 12th Sip ‘n Stroll and each year the mug features a different Seguin landmark. Previous years, the mug has featured the pecan, The First Church, Sebastopol House, the Aumont, and the Texas Theatre,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB Director, “The committee decided to feature our historic churches over the next few years, last year’s First Church was chosen, with this year’s to feature Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, located at 201 East Nolte Street.”

St. Andrew’s was founded in Seguin in 1853. The original St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church building was completed in 1876. In the century following, changes and additions included construction of a vestibule

and sacristy, exterior surfacing of limestone, and reconstruction of the bell tower. For more information on the church and additional photos, visit http://www.standrewseguin.org.

All artists are welcome to participate with all interpretations of the subject considered. The artwork can be from any period of the chapel’s history. The artwork should be submitted to the Seguin Main Street office at 116 N. Camp Street by Friday, July 15. Contact Christy Hopper at (830) 401-2475 to confirm drop off time. The 2022 Sip ‘n Stroll Committee will judge the submissions and select the artwork.

The chosen artwork will be featured on over 1,000 mugs, featured in press releases, new articles and shared across social media platforms. The artist will also be invited to be present at Pecan Fest on October 29 where the sale of the 2022 Sip n’ Stroll mug will be launched. The selected artist will also receive a $100 stipend.

For more information, contact Kyle Kramm with the Seguin Main Street Program at (830)401-2448 or [email protected].

Fiesta, continued.

KWED General Manager Darren Dunn says Jumpstart’s high-energy performances were among the things that initially captured his attention. He says Freedom Fiesta is coming back in a big way this year and knows that the band is what the Seguin community has been needing.

“They’ve got a talented group of musicians. That’s one of the things that really attracted me to them. They’ve got an 11-piece band. That includes a horn section. The horn section allows them to play all kinds of hits, all kinds of tunes. You will hear songs that will make you want to dance. You will hear songs that you know, and we think that everyone will have a good time as Jumpstart jumpstarts the crowd with their unique blend of sounds for Freedom Fiesta so come on out, check out Jumpstart at Freedom Fiesta 2022,” said Dunn.

Dunn says the band’s connection to Seguin also adds to this summer’s homecoming celebration.

“Jumpstart is a variety band from Austin, but it is much more than that. Jumpstart has a Seguin connection, a couple of its members are

from Seguin and because of that we know Jumpstart understands how important Freedom Fiesta is to us and how important Freedom Fiesta is to this community, so Jumpstart is going to bring great sounds to Freedom Fiesta this year,” said Dunn.

Along with live music, KWED will also be welcoming a host of food trucks and a handful of non-profit food vendors. The Knights of Columbus will again partner with KWED in hosting this year’s beer garden.

KWED’s Freedom Fiesta is part of the city of Seguin’s Fourth of July celebration line-up. That lineup continues Sunday, July 3 with the Patriotic Concert at 7 p.m. followed by the city’s Fireworks Fiesta at 9:30 p.m. Events wrap up on Monday, July 4 with a flag raising ceremony in Central Park at 9 a.m. and the Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade in Texas at 10 a.m.

To learn more about this year’s KWED Freedom Fiesta and about this year’s band Jumpstart be sure to pick up a free copy of this month’s magazine Seguin Today. Copies are available at various locations around town. They can also be picked up at Seguin Radio KWED located at 609 E. Court St.

Cybersecurity, continued.

“To me, it’s not necessarily what we are doing per se. Let’s just speak from the context of municipal governments. A lot of municipal governments are doing the same things that we are doing. To me, what makes the city of Seguin special and worthy of recognition is number one, we are kind of doing it more in the rural community – one that may not necessarily associate with high-level cybersecurity or technology in general but to me, what makes it

special is the relationship that has been fostered. So, we are doing it in a place that is not Austin. It’s not New York City. It’s not Los Angeles or Dallas. This is the city of Seguin, and we are doing some very impressive things with cybersecurity, and we are doing it with just regular folks, right? Half of my staff graduated from the local ISD, and they are outstanding in what they do. So, we are all kind of putting our heads together. We are pushing forward. We very much have the buy in from council, Mr. (Steve) Parker, the city manager, the department heads. I speak at every new hire

orientation on the value of cyber security and the potential impacts to an organization also to a personal level, the awareness training that we do. Again, it’s not the tools and resources that we are using. To me, it’s the relationships, the buy-in, the very much the team effort to build something special,” said McDaniel.

Over the past four years, the city’s IT department has been recognized 11 times both state and nationally. This marks the third year in a row that it has won a national award for various parts of technology.

Seguin to Host South Texas AAU District and Regional

Track and Field Meets

(Seguin) -- Seguin and Matador Stadium were recently chosen to host the South Texas AAU District and Regional qualifying track and field events. The District Championship will take place June 24 and 25, and the Regional Qualifier will be June 29 through July 2.

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, multi-sport event organizations in the world. They have been raising athletes since 1888 and are the organizers of the Junior Olympic Games that will be held in Greensboro, North Carolina this year.

Seguin is a part of District 43 of the AAU, which encompasses most of Central and South Texas. Almost 1,500 athletes are anticipated to compete in the District Championship at Matador Stadium. Approximately 2,000 athletes typically compete the following week in the Region 19 Qualifying track and field event. This regional meet will qualify Texas athletes to complete in this year’s Junior Olympics.

“The City is so excited to have the AAU Track and Field competitions coming to Seguin this summer,” says City Manager Steve Parker. “Sports and Recreation Tourism has a huge economic impact to a lot of Texas communities every year. Because the City of Seguin recognizes the positive impacts of sports tourism, we spend a lot of time and energy trying to

enhance our sporting facilities and recruiting organizations such as the AAU. Landing such a prestigious group is an outstanding accomplishment for the City of Seguin.”

The South Texas AAU organization prides itself on growing talented athletes by supporting the youth as they set their eyes on making it to the Junior Olympics.

“We have seen so many kids raised through our organization, grow up to be extremely talented and successful athletes,” says Roderick “Chico” Tanner, Governor of South Texas AAU. “Watching children grow up through our programs is incredibly rewarding.”

“The City of Seguin cannot do this alone,” says Kyle Kramm, Director of Main Street & CVB. “Along with our partners at Seguin ISD, TLU, and other community leaders, we will be leaning heavily on community volunteers to produce these large events.”

Sponsors of all amounts will be needed to get these events off the ground and keep them coming back to Seguin year after year. The City will also be calling for volunteers to help run both track meets.

Businesses and organizations interested in sponsoring or volunteering for these events can find more information at www.seguintexas.gov/AAU

Albert Machaud, 93, passed away peacefully at his home on June 4, 2022. Al lived his life to the fullest, cherishing every moment with his family and friends. A very gregarious person with a quick sense of humor, he made long lasting friendships with ease and valued his many friendships as he would with family. He often told family and friends that he was the luckiest man alive because of these friendships.

Al was born Alberto Machado to Portuguese immigrants Joaquim and Isabel (Rodriques) Machado in New Bedford, MA. He learned to speak English in grade school and was an excellent student,

graduating from high school a year early. Eager to fight for his country in WWII, he immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served in the Pacific, eventually becoming part of the occupation forces stationed in Japan after the war ended.

Upon returning home he used the GI Bill to enroll in the University of Texas at Austin. It was at UT that he met his beloved wife, Dolores (Dee) Schmidt, and they were married in Seguin during their senior year. After graduation they moved to Corpus Christi to start a family and their careers, Al as a petroleum accountant and Dee a school teacher. After moves to Houston and Shreveport, Al was offered a job in San Antonio and the family was able to return to Dee’s hometown of Seguin. Al later joined the management team that would go on to form Tesoro Petroleum where he served as the company’s first Controller. His years at the rapidly growing Tesoro were spent integrating various business ventures across the country, in Europe and the

Caribbean, and the family spent two years in Alaska where Al helped put Tesoro Alaska into operation. He later left Tesoro and joined other entrepreneurs in starting several small petroleum refining and marketing companies before his retirement.

Al took up snow skiing in Alaska and the sport quickly became his passion. Upon returning to Seguin, the family visited many ski resorts and fell in love with a rustic and beautiful Taos NM where he skied as often as possible. A talented artist and photographer, he was able to capture many spectacular photographs during his travels and some of the photos made their way into an art gallery in Taos. In addition to his love for skiing, art and photography, he was an avid Longhorn fan. He could talk for hours about Longhorn football and basketball teams and always found time to watch the games either in person or on TV.

He and his wife loved to entertain in their home and were most gracious hosts. They

also loved to travel here and abroad, even twice joining their grandchildren’s school band trips to Europe as chaperones.

Al is preceded in death by his parents, brother Flavio, his wife Dee, son Scott and daughter Kay Hilbert. Survivors include his son Mark (Jo Anne), daughter Julie Brown (Dix), grandchildren Dr. Lindsay Sonstein (Joey), Kristen Huffman (James), Heather Moffat (Philip), Colby Machaud (Joni), Natalie Stridde (Kenton), Jennifer Gonzalez (Thomas), Austin Brown (Audra) and twelve great grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating Al’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 2 pm at Cross Church with Rev. Jim Price officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cross Church Memorial Fund, 814 N. Bauer, Seguin, TX 78155. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.tresehewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Joe Pacheco, Jr. (aka: Mayor of McQueeney), age 73, of New Braunfels (formerly of Seguin), passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, June 2, 2022. Joe was born on February 27,1949 in Guadalupe County, Texas to his mother, Maria (Rico) and his father, Jose Pacheco, Sr.

Joe was a devoted husband and father. While still a teenager, Joe met his school sweet-heart and bride, Gloria Valdez. Shortly

after, the blessing of a loving and life-long marriage stamped by God’s design would begin. Their beautiful marriage would span for 54 years. A marriage pictured with faithfulness, hope, and love. Mostly, love…Love for their God, each other, and their children. Together they raised three children, a son, Robert Pacheco and two daughters, Ann Marie Hrechko and Vanessa Gonzales.

Joe had many passions and lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures. A steel maker by trade. Joe was a problem solver who always enjoyed a challenge. After over a 30-year career at C.M.C. Steel Texas (formerly Structual Metals Inc.), he hung his hard hat and retired. Once retired, car restoration was a definite past-time. Joe’s hands could fix anything. Joe meticulously restored four beautiful classic cars. Most weekends he could be found at car shows around the area, almost always bringing home the grand prize.

Joe was a fisherman and hunter at heart. Joe’s biggest and most intense passion was to be outdoors enjoying God’s creation. He believed that the experience (whether alone or with many) outweighed the catch.

Henry David Thoreau stated, “Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.”. Joe understood this and seized every moment. Joe taught this concept to his family, especially his grandchildren.

Joe’s passing is preceded by his father Jose Pacheco Sr. and his mother Maria Rico, as well as an older sister Alicia Pacheco. The oldest son, Joe is survived by his sisters and brothers Christine Martinez, Irene Herzog, David Pacheco, and Roy Pacheco.

Joe is survived by his devoted and loving wife Gloria Pacheco, his three children Ann Marie Hrechko (husband: Richard Hrechko), Robert Pacheco (wife: Kelly Pacheco), Vanessa Gonzales (husband: Rene Gonzales), and his six grandchildren, Christopher Gonzales, Koby Pacheco (wife: Meghan Pacheco), Joseph Hrechko (wife: Alyssa Hrechko), Danielle Gonzales, Ava Grace Pacheco, and Alexandra Hrechko, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

A visitation and memorial service celebrating Joe’s life will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by The Chaplet of Divine Mercy in song at 2 p.m., followed by a service at 2:15 p.m. The celebration will be held at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with the Reverend Doctor Chuck Thebeau officiating. A private interment will take place at a later date.

The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many expressions of love, concern, and kindness shown to them during this hour of bereavement. May God Bless and Keep You Always!

FDA Committee Recommends Moderna Vaccine For Kids 6-17(Washington, DC) -- Moderna’s two-dose COVID-19 vaccine for kids ages six to 17 has cleared a big hurdle. Moderna’s vaccine boasts an effectiveness of 90-percent against the virus in teens ages 12 to 17 and a 76-percent effectiveness rate for kids six to eleven.

Study: Air Pollution Cuts Average Life Expectancy By Two Years(Chicago, IL) -- Air pollution cuts average life expectancy by more than two years, comparable to effects of smoking. That’s according to a new study from the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute. It said more than 97-percent of the population lives in an area where air pollution is over the recommended level. The study noted that funding to address the issue is inadequate as air pollution keeps being disregarded as a public health concern.

Gov. Hochul Bolsters NY Abortion Rights(New York, NY) -- New York’s Governor is signing off on a package of bills to further protect abortion rights. Democrat Kathy Hochul says New York will ensure a woman is never forced into a government mandated pregnancy as the Supreme Court decides the fate of Roe v. Wade. One of the measures allows New Yorkers to sue people who are trying to limit their reproductive rights while another protects women wanted for having abortions in other states from extradition. Under law, providers and families can now keep personal addresses confidential to ensure safety.

WHO To Assess Whether Monkeypox Is Public Health Emergency(United Kingdom) -- The World Health Organization’s emergency committee will meet next week to decide whether to declare the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency. It’s called that because it was first identified in laboratory monkeys.
