High-Resolution MR Imaging in Orthopedics & Pediatrics

The “Variety“ Coil is a 16-channel multipurpose array developed to contour closely to anatomy, particularly for MR exams that can be challenging. Many musculoskeletal exams prove difficult due to patient size, anatomy contour, and patient comfort during image acquisition. The soft comfort, flexible set-up, optional positioning aids and exceptional SNR of the Variety Flex Coil provide routine, high quality MSK imaging. Each half of the coil is an 8-channel array, used separately or in 16-channel combination provides coverage of joints and body applications. Eight small diameter coil elements in each array are designed for homogeneous high SNR, which allows excellent small FOV resolution. Unique overall size, 8/8 array configuration, and durable soft material with excellent mechanical flexibility en-ables the Variety Flex to cover many high resolution imaging applications not achievable with standard flexco-ils. This one coil set can be the solution to your orthopedic and pediatric imaging needs.

Hand, Wrist and Finger

The 8/8 split design and size of the array coil halves enables imaging of the whole hand, wrist and fingers.The custom positioning aid, in which the coil is placed, creates a stable and flat surface for positioning the hand. The second coil half can be placed anteriorly. Alternatively, the hand can be positioned at-side using the elbow posi-tioning aid (see picture below right).

Elbow

For routine elbow imaging, the optional orthopedic positioning aid can be used and adjusted for patient size. For small elbows and children, often a single array can be used to adequately encompass the elbow.

Shoulder

Routine shoulder imaging can easily be performed by joining the two arrays together and wrapping the coil anteriorly and posteriorly around the humeral head. A simple strap or sandbag can be used to secure the coil for imaging.The wedge pad included in the optional Orthopedics Positioning Aids package is designed to facilitate positioning for this application.

Knee, Foot and Ankle

The optional knee foot ankle positioning aid facilitates these imaging applications by providing easy set-up for motion free imaging. Knee and foot aids feature slides to immobilize foot movement for knee exams. While separable, it is advised to use these aids in combination.For knee imaging, place each coil array on each side of the knee. Clip or hook and loop straps secure the coil to the knee. Knee and foot are immobilized by snugging pads to comfortably wrap anatomy for scan-ning.For ankle and foot imaging, coils easily sandwich anatomy and secure to the positioning aid using straps for fast, easy comfortable set-up.
