Before writing you must identify the following:

Audience The audience is whoever will be reading your writing. Who are you addressing? A paper written for third graders and a business letter to the mayor will sound differently.

Strong verb/ purpose Why you are writing? (Explain, Entertain, Inform, Persuade)

Format How you will put the writing together (a letter, an essay, a poem, etc.) What is the format of this paper? (Letter, Essay, Picture book)

What point of view is the prompt asking you to assume? (A student, a son or daughter, a teenager. ) All of these roles will sound different.

What is the prompt asking you to write about? This is one of the most important steps. Read and re­read until you absolutely understand what the prompt is asking you to address.

Narrative Writing

purpose to tell a story about an event

main idea the incident or event that is important to the story

development includes specific details about the setting,characters, conflict, action, plot; has a beginning, middle, and end; incorporates thoughts, feelings; incorporates dialogue

Expository Writing

Modes of Writing Activity

Remember, all good writing includes… ­ some description­ the six traits

Assignment:1. Choose one of the illustrations

from Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book The Mysteries of Harris

Burdick. 2. Fold a piece of notebook paper in half.3. Label each half (front and back) with one of the four modes of writing: narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive.4. Prepare a written piece for each of the four modes of

writing based on the illustration you selected. Gothrough the steps of prewriting (on a separate piece of

paper), drafting*, revising, and editing for all four modes. 5. Choose your favorite one of the four to rewrite into final draft format for publishing.*Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and end orintroduction, body, and conclusion (depending on the mode). However, you are limited to the half­page space for each piece.
