Learning Together – Empowered for Life

Dear Parents and carers,

I imagine that by the time you read this, you’ve already picked up on messages and letters from the school and I can

only apologise for swamping your inbox with items, just at a point when typically we might all be expecting to wind

down a bit over the Christmas break. We’ve all been a bit taken aback by the hastily convened Government

instruction about the changes to the return to school in January. At the time of writing, we only have outline details

for what will be required and this will undoubtedly take a great deal of planning over the holiday period in order to

have anything operationally ready for January.

In the meantime, we have tried to make the end of term as normal as we can for our students and the final tutor

group session of the term was jam-packed with pre-recorded content, as well as being a great opportunity for tutors

to re-engage with their tutor groups; something that has been sorely missed. Various elements of the tutor content is

shared later in this bulletin. However, a fringe benefit of these

strange times has been the opportunity to record the staff

Christmas pantomime rather than the dubious thespian skills

being paraded live. Here for your delectation and delight is ‘Larry

Otter and the covid cursed fish fingers’ CLICK HERE. (Also on

Facebook and Twitter). Massive thanks to Mr Davis for his

exceptional skill in drawing together such unpromising material

and turning it into something hilarious.

And, just to prove that the staff can relax (occasionally),

the dream team of Hill and Davis, put on a monumental

staff quiz on Thursday afternoon. Doing these things

virtually presents challenges all of its own, but a great way

to show off knowledge (something school staff love to do)

and to show a bit of spirit at the end of a particularly

difficult and demanding term. The picture shows the song

round and the eagle-eyed might spot a guest appearance

from a much-missed former colleague.

At this point, I’m going to include a section drawn from

my end of term message to staff. Periodically, we sadly have to say goodbye to colleagues leaving and this term is no

different. Kayley Ray is leaving us from Learning Support after seven great years to a new and promoted post in the

Midlands. Many students have benefitted from her brilliant support and as you may know, her skills as an ELSA have

been invaluable and made a big difference. Mrs Park, as you’re all now aware, is leaving the English department to

take up a new and substantive post as Head of Department elsewhere. She has made a remarkable contribution to

our school and is hugely respected by colleagues, students and parents alike. Her loss will be felt keenly by the English

team. Don’t be surprised however, if you see a few lessons being taught by Mrs Hill returning in January and also Mrs

Park who will complete teaching her Year 13s. Finally, there’s Mr Hutton, a Yateley School legend, for whom any

remarks by me will just scratch the surface. After 45 years of fantastic service in the school, he has touched the lives of

thousands of students and hundreds of colleagues. Adults throughout the community as well as children remember

with enormous fondness the inspirational teaching that Mr Hutton has given them, the camaraderie and an insistence

on excellence. He has been the model of great teaching and a great colleague and friend to many many people. I

know that plans are afoot for a send-off in the immediate term, but it should also be noted that a post-pandemic

proper send off for Mr Hutton should be anticipated. Thank you all for your amazing work.

You will see a lot of detail later in the bulletin about the activities

of the House System and the delayed results from the 2019-20

academic year. However, I’d like to pay tribute to the amazing

work of our team throughout the year and their efforts to keep

the spirit of the House system alive and well through these

difficult times have been superb. The worthy winners of the

overall House Cup from last year were Nightingale and Darwin.

The picture shows the two Heads of House Mr Coggan and Mrs

Short. Congratulations all.

At this point it just remains for me to wish you and happy and a safe Christmas break. I know that many of you may

not get the full break that you might hope for during the school holidays. Please get some rest and recuperation if you

can; the value of having a break to look after your own wellbeing cannot be overestimated. I wish you a very Happy

Christmas and here’s to a much more settled 2021.

Yours sincerely Paul German Headteacher

To use one of my favourite proverbial phrases ‘If the mountain will not go to Muhammad, Muhammad must go to the

mountain…’

Such is the case with this academic year’s music events, so we have rose to the occasion and spent last two to three

months practicing, rehearsing, recording, videoing and editing a variety of solo and small ensemble performances in

order to present to you music skills and talents of many Yateley School’s students.

WOW!!!!! A massive thank you to everyone who donated such wonderful gifts to our elderly Christmas appeal. We managed to make 98 gifts bags and deliver them to Hedge croft and Fiske court both in Yateley. They are now being quarantined and distributed over the weekend to the residents. I know from previous years how much this means to them, so thank you again for helping us provide them with a little something this Christmas.

Music Award Catch-22/Breathe was a band formed by Yateley School students, friends who jammed together, rehearsed in the

Music Block, performed in school concerts, House Music competitions and in wider community music circuit in the

late 80ties and early 90ties. Some of the past members still live in our community and have sent their own children to

our school too. Interestingly, history repeated itself as younger generation also got itself immersed in music, jammed

and gigged in our school and beyond throughout 00s and after ‘10s.

Since year 2000, all of our Music students have been able to use Breathe touring rock drum kit and flight cases

donated to us by Spike’s parents following Spike’s early passing. We still used them and look after them…

Therefore, this award is appropriately founded and awarded in the true spirit of musicianship, creativity, community

spirit and camaraderie. The first recipients are three friends and multi-instrumentalists, whose Pankforce rock trio

entertained and inspired our community throughout 2019/20. I am looking forward to downloading their music from

Tidal any time soon…

Congratulations Brodie Walker - 11WS, Samuel Yung – 11PN, Carter Harris – 11PN

Simon Brown Award The first student had exceptional academic achievement. They were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in December of

Year 11 but did not use this as an excuse. They took part in House Council, House events and was House Captain

The second student had amazing exam results following incredibly challenging circumstances – got on and did it

Congratulations Phoebe Shea – 12DNH and Ciaran Donegan – 12BRY

Bill Moore Memorial Trophy When putting together charity appeals in School you need compassion, generosity and organisation - 9DN and Mrs McKerlie have

these qualities in spades! Last year they rallied together to produce beautiful and thoughtful gift bags for the elderly that went

beyond what would ordinarily be expected. We wanted to recognise their efforts by awarding them the special award for charity

Congratulations 9DN

Ready Respectful Safe Awards These are awarded to one student in each house that the Head of House feels embodies our positive values of Ready Respectful

and Safe.

Rachel Seavers - The student I have chosen epitomises these values perfectly, with humility and without

seeking special appreciation. She is always organised and well prepared and treats everyone with complete kindness and respect.

To add to this she is always willing to give her time to the House and has contributed a huge amount to Music and Drama over the

years. I know this student will never, ever expect any special recognition for her effort and dedication which makes her even more

deserving so the RRS award for Darwin goes to Rachel Seavers.

Gabe Hogben-Stephenson - Gabe is Mr Nightingale, he has been from the day he started at Yateley,

throwing himself into being part of Nightingale House. He has been a huge part of the drama productions, taken part in most

house sports events, helped with school council I could go on. When you start at Yateley we tell you about all the amazing

opportunities and how you should embrace them all, Well he certainly did just that. Thank you for all your hard work, dedication

and enthusiasm you bring to Nightingale House. This is a well-deserved award.

Rebecca Pomfrett - Rebecca has been a team player since she started at Yateley School and a great asset

to Pankhurst House. She has taken part in numerous house events including drama and dance. She is an exceptionally hard

worker and shows incredible dedication to her studies at school. Rebecca is a fantastic friend to her peers and is respectful of

differing views around her. She has been an active part in House Council and has incredible determination to get tasks

done. Well done Rebecca.

Abi Thatcher - Abi Thatcher is one of the nicest girls you could ever meet! Abi has consistently tried her

hardest at everything, whether that is taking part in the really hard, long distance races at Sports Day to baking for Cake Sales,

House Dance, Music and Drama. She is one of the current Wilberforce House Charity Captains. Last year, Abi surprised everyone

with her amazing solo performance at House Music - not a dry eye in the House. Ani deserves this award so much, she really does

epitomise Wilberforce House.
