Dear Friend,

Welcome to Journey Church Family!

We are honored that you have expressed interest in being a part of the team. We trulybelieve that when we push aside our personal preferences to serve the local church theworld can be forever changed by the love of Jesus. We are called to serve like Jesusdid and it is an honor to be a part of the story He is telling throughout history. We makeno apologies for being over the top thrilled to pour out our very lives to share themessage of Hope found in Him.

We love the way Romans 12 states it:“So hereʼs what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinarylife—your sleeping, eating, going-to- work, and walking-around life—and place itbefore God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thingyou can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit intoit without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changedfrom the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quicklyrespond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to itslevel of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturityin you.”

We believe as we fix our eyes on Jesus even the most ordinary tasks become worshipto our God! He takes our daily lives and flows His love through all we do! This playbookhas been created to help you with any questions you might have and to instruct you insome of our procedures and responsibilities. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have anyquestions. We want you to know that we are thankful for you - welcome to the family!

The best is YET to come!JJ VasquezLead Pastor

FINE ARTSKey verses:

“Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers inwhat you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12

“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serveone another.” 1 Peter 4:10

What is Fine Arts and why do we do it?

Fine Arts is a discipleship tool of the Assemblies of God Youth Ministries (AGYM) designed tohelp students discover, develop and deploy their ministry gifts. Although competitive elementsare present, providing a competition venue is not the primary mission of the Fine Arts Festival.Through the Fine Arts Festival, students are given the opportunity to have their skills evaluatedby qualified ministers, industry professionals, and educators who encourage excellence, offerideas for improvement, and inspire students to use their gifts in the local church, community, and around the world in ministry or secular vocation. Scores are not as important as howstudents are developed through the Fine Arts process by practicing, preparing, and participatingin this ministry. Journey youth participates in Fine Arts because we love to see our studentsgrow in Christ and develop their God given talents by using them for something that is pushingthem towards Christ.

Who can participate in Fine Arts?

Middle School - High School - College: Kappa Tau6th-8th 9th-12th 18-23 years of age

How does Fine Arts work?

Middle School, High School and College age students will choose a category they would like toparticipate in and be led by a leader who will help them develop or create a specificperformance during a practice day. The practice days will be set accordingly to availability withstudents and leaders. Students will then practice their performance until the day of the Fine ArtsCompetition where they will display what they have learned to a panel of judges who willdeliberate on how the student can progress in that specific category or choose them to advanceto the National Fine Arts Festival.

JY MENTORSHIPWhat is mentoring?"We proclaim Him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may presenteveryone mature in Christ. I labor for this, striving with His strength that works powerfully in me."Colossians 1:28-29 HCSB

“To aspire to leadership in an honorable ambition.”1 Timothy 3:1 NEB

“Should you then seek great things for yourself? Seek them not.”Jeremiah 45:5

Mentoring is the process of developing the character, emotional and spiritual maturity ofstudents/youth; ultimately directing them towards Jesus. This happens through intentionalactions, spending intentional time and initiating intention conversations (includes listening)*.This process may look different for every mentee and is lead by the mentor, not dictated.Keeping in mind that the Holy Spirit is the only one who can change a person, not the mentor. The final destination will always be different, because we are all different in our personalities, talents, interests, abilities and calling but the goal will always be the same for all.

What mentoring will look like in JY:Gender: Mentoring will be conducted by a same gender leader

Relationship/Trust: Each mentor is responsible in getting to know their mentee and developingtrust in the relationship. This is very important in order to lead or help someone grow in any way.If they don't trust you they won't open up to you. To develop trust, as a mentor one must begenuinely interested in the mentee, their well being and their progress. LIstening. Listening in avery important factor in any relationship including this one. When you take the time to listenactively* and demonstrate genuine interest in the person, a person will then be more inclined totrust you and open up.

Mentoring>Friendship: As a mentor you will become your mentees friend, but you mustremember that is not the ultimate goal. You will always be a mentor before a friend. The reasonis because easily we can fall into the trap that just because we are hanging out, having goodconversations and spending time together we are mentoring them. Mentoring does not happennaturally, it requires intentionality. Intentional conversation, intentional question, intentional carefor them.

__________________________________________________________________________We exist to make Jesus accessible to anyone.

www.journeyorl.com12

Bible: (Goal: Book per month + Proverbs): The source of a person's true change of heart isknowing Christ - our mentee’s must read the Word of God to find the key to change and grow.Scripture reading must be involved in our mentoring.

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—yoursleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become sowell-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attentionon God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, andquickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level ofimmaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”Ro 12:1–2. MSG

“Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you.”Jn 8:32. MSGTime Together ( Hang out at least once a month outside of church or youth service; 20 min ofintentional conversation once a week

Things to consider before committing to be a mentor:

True greatness, true leadership is found in giving yourselves to others, not in coaxing orinducing others to serve you. True service is never without cost. Often it comes with a bitter cupof challenges and a painful baptism of suffering. For genuine godly leadership wights carefullyJesus’ question: “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptizedwith?” (Mark 10:38). The real spiritual leader is focused on the service he and she can render toGod and other people, not on the residual and perks of high office or holy title. We must aim toput more onto life than we take out.

Being a mentor or a leader will cost you and will require effort and work. But at the end ofeverything we don't do this because of what we can or may GET of it but for what we can GIVE.

10 Minute Turn Up Ideas

1. Quick Change ArtistBring two people up to the front. Each player is to observe his or her partner's appearance. Then, the players turn around back-to-back and make three changes (mess up hair, take off ashoe, untuck shirt, take arm out of sleeve). When they face each other again, each partner mustidentify the changes made by the opponent. This game can be repeated several times bychanging partners and increasing the number of changes made until a winner is declared.2. Three In Our CrowdHave group split off in groups of three and find three things in common (besides the obviousgender or hair/eye color) such as: favorite holiday, season of the year, hobby, phone app, movie, etc. One person then introduces the group and shares the three things they have in common.Depending on your group, you can make it a bit silly by asking the person who does the intro touse a voice like a talk-show host.3. PterodactylThis one is for pure laughs. Students get in a circle and go around the circle trying to say"pterodactyl" without showing their teeth (putting lips over teeth like a person without theirdentures in). Students may switch the direction of the game by looking at the next person anddoing their best pterodactyl impression (maaach!), again without showing teeth/smiling. Thosewho crack-up or smile are out.4. Quick Line-upHave the group make lines of 8-10. If you have more than one line, they can race to line up inorder of:

● Alphabetical by mom's first name● Height, shortest to tallest● Month of birthday, starting with current month● After area code, first three numbers of phone number, least to greatest

5. Number CrunchersDivide into teams of 8-10, up to 20. Have students stand in order between two lines that are 18inches apart. On the signal, person #1 changes places with #10 without moving outside thelines. Next #2 swaps with #9, #3 swaps with #8, etc. Be sure that #2 and #9 don't move until #1and #10 have made it to their new places, and so on until all have been switched. First team tofinish yells "Crunch!"6. What's Next?Ask the group to sit in a circle. The first person starts with any word they wish, like "blue." Thenext person repeats the first word then adds another word which links to the first, like "berry."The next person repeats the previous word and adds another word link like "pie.” To keep thismoving, only allow a few seconds for each new word association.7. ClumpsDivide into pairs. Ask each pair to sit on the floor with their partner, backs together, armslinked. Their task is to stand up together. Once everyone has done this, two pairs join together

__________________________________________________________________________We exist to make Jesus accessible to anyone.

www.journeyorl.com14

and the group of four tries to repeat the task. After they succeed, add another two and try again.Keep adding pairs until your whole group is trying to stand together.8. Human Rock-Paper-ScissorsYou can use lots of themes for this game and make up fun poses for the three characters. (Howabout "Wizard beats Giant - Giant beats Elf - Elf beats Wizard" or "Spiderman beats Batman -Batman beats Superman - Superman beats Spiderman"?) After the poses are decided, breakstudents up into pairs or into two teams. If played as a large group, the team will need to agreeon one of the poses for each round (everyone on the same team will need to do the samepose). Give each team a few minutes to strategize. Once the teams have their poses ready, aleader will have them, on the count of three, jump around and do the pre-determined pose. Youcan play however many times you’d like. Best out of five rounds is a good number for amedium-size group.9. Blanket Name GameFor each turn, each team chooses a volunteer to stand (or sit) behind the blanket. Count “1, 2,3? and drop the blanket. The first player to correctly identify the name of the individual, wins theround, earning one point for her team.10. Silent But Not DeadlyStudents are secretly given a number and they have to arrange themselves WITHOUTSPEAKING in numerical order by holding up fingers or making up their own sign language. ForRound Two, have people arrange themselves in order of birth or in calendar months.11. Can I Come In?Students get in a circle with one person in the middle. That person goes around the circleasking "Can I Come In?" Most people answer "No" unless they want to be in the middle. Whilethis is happening, other people in the circle use non-verbal communication to run and switchplaces (but no shimmying - which means trading places with the person next to you). The objectis for person in the middle to catch two people switching and move into an empty spot, thusleaving another person in the middle to ask "Can I Come In?"12. Frown King/Frown QueenStudents pair up and stand back-to-back. On the count of three, everyone faces their partner, looks each other in the eyes and tries to frown, no speaking. The first to smile or laugh must sitdown. All who remain standing take a new partner and the activity continues until two peopleremain. If you have two who are excellent at keeping a straight face, you can divide into teamsand the opposite team can heckle to break down the opposing team’s player. The last onestanding is crowned Frown King or Frown Queen. (Crown is optional!)13. Human Knot GameDivide into groups of 6-10 people. Each group forms a tight circle, standing and facing eachother. Everyone extends their hands into the circle and by intermingling their arms, graspshands with other members of the group. Be sure that the two hands they are holding do notbelong to the same person. The groups’ goal: untie the knot, which results in members of thegroup having to climb over, under, or through each other’s arms to untie the knot of bodies.14. Destination ImaginationEach student thinks of a city or country they would like to visit or have visited. Then they decideupon three clues to help the other members to be able to accurately guess their destination. The trick to this game however, is that they cannot say their clues out loud - they have to act__________________________________________________________________________

We exist to make Jesus accessible to anyone.www.journeyorl.com

15

them out. For instance, if their chosen place is Hawaii, they could do a hula dance. The personat the end of the game, who has guessed the most destinations, wins!15. Fruit Salad LoveHave students get in a circle and everyone has to pick the name of a different fruit and share itwith the group. Someone starts by saying: "_____(their own fruit) loves _____ (name of anotherfruit that was mentioned). For example "Banana loves Apple." Then, the person who has appleas their fruit continues by saying "Apple loves ____ (names another fruit)." One person is in themiddle and tries to tag anyone who pauses. Those who pause step out of the circle. The finaltwo are the winners.16. "Luke I am your father."One student is blindfolded and goes to the front of the group. Other students take turns trying todisguise their voice and say a predetermined phrase like "Luke, I am your father" or "Hey there, what's my name?" The blindfolded student tries to guess who it is. If they are successful atguessing who is talking, they get to keepgoing. If they fail, then the student who disguised their voice takes their place. Play until youhave a voice recognition champ!17. The Cold Never Bothered Me AnywayThis takes a little prep, but it's worth it. Wet and wad up 5 t-shirts (even better, a youth groupt-shirt) and put them in the freezer. Take frozen t-shirts to youth group and divide into five teams. The first team to unfreeze and get the t-shirt on one of its’ members, wins!18. "Would You Rather" Walls of TruthGive students a list of "would you rather" questions, and give them a few minutes to answer. Then have students stand facing forward in the middle of the room with each side wallrepresenting choice A or choice B. Ask the first question. Students step toward the wall thatcorresponds with their answer. Have them take note of who had similar answers.19. BINGO is your NAME-OMake a grid on a piece of cardstock with some fun categories written in each square: "Someonewho likes ___ (band name)" or "Someone who has been on a mission trip," or "Someone whowatches Netflix too much." Duplicate for everyone in your group and hand out pencils.Encourage the group to mix, talk to everyone to try and complete their card. If one of the itemslisted on the bingo card relates to the person they are talking with, have them sign their name inthat box.20. Candy Q&APick a bite-sized candy that comes in multiple colors. Pass around a bowl of candy largeenough for your group to take a few. DON'T EAT THEM! Have questions that correspond witheach color. Then go around the group and share the answers that correspond to the candy inyour hand. For example, for each green candy: a goal you have in life. For each red candy: afavorite Christmas present. Bonus, after you answer you can eat the candy.21. Song ScrambleBefore the meeting, write out the first 5-6 lines or phrases from several popular songs, only oneline/phrase per card. Make sure that only enough cards are used to cover the number of peoplepresent. The cards are then scattered on the floor. To start the game, each person grabs a cardand tries to find whose holding the other cards that complete the verse or section of the song. The winning group is the first one to correctly assemble and sing their song.

__________________________________________________________________________We exist to make Jesus accessible to anyone.

www.journeyorl.com16

22. ChocoholicAsk two groups to sit in a circle on the floor. In the middle of the circle place bite-sized candybars (unwrapped) on a plate, a knife, a fork, and three items of clothing – gloves, scarf andgigantic shoes. Each person in the circle takes a turn at rolling a die. On throwing a six, they runto the middle of the circle, put on the items of clothing, and start cutting the chocolate bars inhalf with a plastic knife, eating as many pieces as possible with a plastic fork. As soon assomeone else throws a six that person runs to the middle puts on the gloves, scarf and shoes, and takes over. Continue until all the chocolate is eaten.23. My Super SelfieGive everyone a sheet of paper and something colorful to draw with, such as a crayon ormarker. Ask each member of the group to go off into their own corner of the room to think of thesuper power he or she wishes to have. They need to draw themselves as a superhero (orvillain!) with the paper and marker provided. After a few minutes, they come back together andshare their self-portrait and describe their super power in detail.24. Name Game Hot PotatoAsk the group to form a large circle and as you toss a soft object (a small stuffed animal worksgreat), say the name of the person to whom you are tossing. Once that person catches theobject, he picks someone else, shouts her name and tosses it to her, trying to go as quickly aspossible. Play continues with the one object until it makes it to everyone in the group. Oncesomeone's name has been called, he cannot get it again. Once you have gotten througheveryone, add more stuffed animals and let the mayhem begin! Keep going, try to get at leastfive objects going at once. If your group is large, divide into smaller groups. After a few minutes, mix up the groups and start again so everyone gets to know each other's names.25. PenguinsMusical chairs goes to the North Pole. Have enough sheets of paper for everyone in your group(these are the blocks of ice) and spread them around on the floor of your room. Have everyoneget on a block of ice, one per block. When you start music or blow a whistle, penguins jump offtheir block and waddle around like penguins (arms stuck to sides) till the music stops and theymust get back on a block of ice. While music is playing, remove a block of ice. Remember to tellkids they must not hover around any certain ice block or they are out. Last penguin standingwins!26. Bible Name ScrambleIf ever there was a list of names to scramble, look no further than Matthew 1:1 in the Bible!Challenge them to crack open their Bibles (you can make it easier by doing a scramble of only afew verses) and give them a few scrambled up names like "Rehoboam" or "Zerubbabel." Theteam who finishes first will have some fun trying to pronounce their winning answers!27. The Doctor Will See You NowAssign one person to play the doctor. That person leaves the room. Have a bag with strips ofpaper listing an ailment or phobia for someone on their team to act out (or even better, have thewhole team act it out). Examples: they think they are chickens; they are scared of spiders; theyhave aliens growing inside of them, etc. The doctor re-enters the room and must figure out whatis wrong. He or she may ask any player yes/no questions, but not "what's wrong with you?"After each question, the doctor can make a guess (diagnosis) of what he or she thinks is wrong.

__________________________________________________________________________We exist to make Jesus accessible to anyone.

www.journeyorl.com17

After five or so guesses, if they don't get it, the other team gets a turn. The team with the mostcorrect guesses wins!28. Web of 20 QuestionsGather kids in a circle. Using a ball of yarn, hold on to one end and throw the ball to someone. They then choose a question from 1-20 to answer (project this list up on a screen or have acopy to pass around). Adapt for your group. Eventually this creates a web as well as learningabout people in the group.Ideas for Questions:

● What are the top 3 songs on your playlist?● If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?● What three things would you save if your house were burning?● What would be your dream concert to attend?

29. Art CollectorGive everyone a piece of paper and a pencil. In 5 minutes, each must draw a picture thatconveys who he or she is without writing any words or numbers. At the end of five minutes, collect the pictures. Show them to the group one at a time and have them try to guess who drewit. The person who guesses the most correctly gets to be the "Master Art Collector!”30. Paper CrazyDivide into teams of five or six people and give each group a copy of the SAME newspaper. Askthem to spread the newspaper out, then describe a particular ad, article, fact, or picture from thepaper. Have the team find it, rip it out and bring it to you. The first team to bring it gets a point.Continue calling out items. The team with the most points wins.

● Living Above Reproach – At Journey Youth we understand the value of credible leadership. Insome ways similar to Modeling, Living Above Reproach is a practice that minimizes the abilityof anyone to question your integrity as you lead. In Journey Youth, we require that you LiveAbove Reproach in the following ways:

o Sexual Purity – We will walk with Ephesians 3:5 purity, “but among you theremust not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity…”

o Illegal Substances – There is to be no use/abuse of any illegal substance:without exception.

o Addictive Behaviors – An addictive behavior is any behavior that is acted uponcompulsively. The Bible is very clear in it’s communication that we are to be aslave/servant to nothing/no one but Jesus. Matthew 6:24, 1 Corinthians 6:12,Romans 6:6.

o Influence – In all ways and at all times, you must be mindful of your influence. We recognize that there are some topics that are very subjective in the Christianwalk. A good example of this is the issue of drinking. For subjective issues, weask that you follow this thought process:

▪ Will this action cause others to stumble? 1 Corinthians 8:9-13▪ Am I in a place or setting that, if someone were to see me doing

this action, I may be compromising my influence in their life? Titus2:6-8

▪ Although this action is permissible, is it beneficial? 1 Corinthians 10:23▪ Are my motives Christ oriented, or am I operating from selfish motives

(coping, rebellion, self-medicating)? Galatians 5:13-16

● Social Media- Everyone is watching. Always keep this in mind. Parents trust us with theirchild and what we teach them. NO- Alcohol post/sparsely clothed pics. Use youth AND THEIRPARENTS as your filter!

● Stay focused. Remember, we are others focused. If you see a youth with a need, meet theyouth where they are. Be friendly. Be loving. Be open.

● Be positive. It’s hard to be welcoming and hyped with a negative attitude.● If you see a need, please meet it! As you learn what it takes for a Sunday to take place,

feel free to meet any needs you see in order to ensure things happen, as they should.● Remember we are representing Jesus and Journey Church. Be whom you needed

when you were young with the filter of Jesus!
