teachers relating to the learning strengths and
needs of students. All South Australian Department
for Education students in years 3 to 10 are required
to undertake PAT Reading (PAT-R) and Maths
(PAT-M) annually, with optional testing for years 1
and 2. Our students have participated in these tests
during the past few weeks. Results will then be
analysed by teachers to determine student growth,
as well as areas for teaching and learning
improvement.
NAPLAN
Schools will soon receive student NAPLAN results to
send home to families of Year 3, 5 and 7 students.
When you receive your child’s results, please
contact your child’s teacher if you have any
questions.
Our school has been selected to participate in an
“Item Trial” to evaluate test items (questions) that
are under consideration for inclusion in future
NAPLAN tests. Some of our students in Year 3, 5 and
7 will take part in the trial on Monday 13th, Tuesday
14th and Wednesday 15th September.
CLASS STRUCTURES 2022
We are beginning the process of developing our
class structures for the 2022 school year. To help us
prepare, it is important that we know which
students will not be continuing with us next year. If
your child will not be at Tanunda Primary School &
Disability Unit in 2022, please send us an email or
note advising us, if you haven’t already done so.
This will assist us in determining our class
configurations and helps us determine our staffing
needs for the following year.
Allocating children to classes is a complex and
detailed process involving collecting feedback
from staff, parents/carers and students. The size of
our classes is determined by the DfE guidelines: 26
students in R-2 classes and 30 students in 3-7 classes.
Our aim is to establish balanced classes and in

in a variety of ways as they are learning but there
are also standardized tests that are administered
each year such as:
PHONICS SCREENING CHECK
Phonics is the relationship between letters and
sounds and is vital in learning to read.
The phonics screening check (PSC) is an assessment
that helps indicate how students are progressing
with phonics. It takes 5 to 7 minutes per student
and is compulsory for all students in year 1. The
results are used for planning further learning and
providing information on what additional support
might be required for students. Our Year 1 students
completed the PSC during this term. Please
contact your child’s teacher if you would like to find
out more.
PROGRESSIVE ASSESSMENT TESTS (PAT)
The Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) are online
assessments that provide diagnostic information to
