had the opportunity to travel to Spain with the Nomads girls under-IS andgirls under-I6 (my daughter Kellis team) when they participated in the10th Costa Blanca Cup played in the city of Benidorm
While I was busy trying to come up with ways to make this an education-al trip for Kelli eg speaking Spanish etc I realized I could make it edu-
cational for myself as wellWe began in Barcelona where the teams trained at El Montanya resort which
has a full soccer training facility on the grounds Using an interpreter I spoke withmembers of the grounds staff about their maintenance practices Their turf is a mix
of Bermudagrass Kikuyu and ryegrass which they affectionately refer to as aHeinz 57 and say its the best they can do
El Montanya goes through extreme temperature changes teens in the winterand 90+ degrees in the summer I learned that this facility is used for training onlyso thats why the maintenance is minimal Weekly reel mowing fertilization every 6weeks dictated by weather conditions and irrigation (through aboveground impactheads) as needed was about it
We bussed to our game sites built with Spanish federal government funds andthen turned over to local governments to operate and maintain
Our first game was at a beautiful venue in Benidorm that featured mostly wellgroomed Bermuda They mowed this field three times a (continued on page 35)

The next generation ofweather technology is hereand with it comes conve-
nience and simplicity for turf man-agers Weather service informationhelps handle rain delays and eventmanagement while protectingpatron player and employee safety

_ pret readily available via theInternet and can be set up to goanywhere the user goes via cellphones pagers and e-mail Theresult is precise real-time weatherinformation that provides bothadvance warning and adequatepreparation times for severe weatherevents that could impact users loca-tion( s) of interest
For sports turf managers weathertechnology offers up-to-the-minuteweather information including theability to accurately gauge rainfalland severe weather monitor light-ning check wind speed and keeptabs on the heat index Localizedforecasts provide accurate outlooksat hourly intervals as far as 10 daysout Rainfall details on how muchrain will fall and how much isalready on the ground helps man-agers determine irrigation schedules
Lightning protectionBecause safety is a top priority
weather systems afford turf managersthe chance to set up custom advi-sories and receive weather informa-tion that is only pertinent to theirexact location For example to offerprotection against lightning todaysweather systems sound an alarm orissue an audible warning when alightning strike occurs within a stadi-ums designated coverage area
State-of-the-art weather systemsshould also be able to provide pre-cise precipitation monitoring tools toautomatically monitor radar data forexact start and stop times for rainand other precipitation events affect-ing that location Alarms can be setfor notice of light moderate orheavy precipitation which preparesyou to give advance warning ofanticipated conditions and plans forproactive action By using alarmsand alerts you know when severestorms are approaching as well asexact arrival times so that groundcrews can be advised and workschedules adjusted ST

SAFE Wants to Hear from YOUThe Safer Athletic Field Environments (SAFE)
was created by the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) to provideresearch educational programs and scholarships geared to sports fields TheSAFE Foundation Board of Trustees continues to move forward on followingthe parameters set to help SAFE meet its the goals established during theirspring Board Meeting in Chicago
The Board recognizes the fact that SAFE has much work to completebefore it can supply the sports turf industry with the desired level of pro-grams Additional funding is needed to fulfill all three arms of our missionthe scholarship program research and education SAFEs major thrust for2004 is seeking greater funding for sports specific research finalizing theresearch criteria and beginning assessment of research projects for fundingThe Board continues to make positive steps in all of these areas Progresshas already been made on the research criteria and development continueson the forms for research grant applications
SAFE encourages sports turf managers to provide their input on specificareas of sports turf related research needs by contacting SAFE by phone at800-323-3875 or via email SAFEstomhcoxmailcom
These research suggestions will augment the information gathered in
an earlier call for research recommendations It is the intent of the SAFEBoard and the SAFE Research Committee to identify key areas of researchneeds and then solicit these needs to the researchers Thus it is importantthat this information on key areas of research needs come from STMAmembers STMA Chapters and other sports turf managers SAFE will focuson research that is applicable and repeatable practical research that meetsthe needs of sports turf managers
Next significant scholarship funding is available thanks to the fundsraised through the combination of the Jacobsen-sponsored SAFE GolfTournament and the Raffle Silent and Live Auctions held in conjunctionwith the STMA Conference held in San Diego last January The SAFE Boardhas authorized the allocation of up to $18000 in direct Scholarship dollarsand funds toward travel and lodging expenses to allow the recipients toattend the STMA 2005 Conference in Phoenix Scholarship application infor-mation and application forms are sent directly to STMA Student andEducator members as well as to 2- and 4-year Colleges and Universitiesoffering turf programs These materials also are posted in the SAFE sectionof the STMA website
(continued from page 31) week with a reel mower and have an aggressive fertiliza-tion program including applying a high nitrogen product during the peak growingmonths The program includes winter and spring applications of high phosphorusand potassium supplemented with iron and sulfur A combination of core andslice aerations are done bi-monthly based on use
Topdressing material isapplied after each core aera-tion with seeding of an annu-al rye during winter The irri-gation system is convention-al controller remote controlvalves and gear-driven rotorsThe system is adjusted dailyaccording to weather condi-tions and scheduled eventsThe site is used for club andsemi-pro soccer as well astrack and field events
The same landscapemanagement company thatmaintains this facility also
handled the field at our next venue Alfaz AnnexoWe then went to Alfaz Estadio which had two soccer fields that needed care
Local volunteers maintain this field and so there is no maintenance program orresources available other than donations The volunteers filled low spots with top-soil and most areas had good stands of the Heinz 57 played fine
Our final stop was Calpe which was another impressive facility with one turffield and one synthetic Our game was at night and so there were no grounds per-sonnel around to talk to but the turf was Bermuda mowed tight and it was a deepshade of green indicating some fertilization and irrigation was being used
Whether it is wear spots lack of resources or a lack of trained professionals theone constant with turf management in the US is we all have similar problems

The Ohio Sports Turf Managers Association helda 2-day irrigation workshop June 17-18 at Paul BrownStadium in Cincinnati Attendees had a great opportunity tolearn about irrigation inside and out
Dr Ed McCoy form Ohio State kicked off the event witha detail explanation on how soils effect and interact withmoisture He demonstrated his new software that allows himto time lapse the infiltration and saturation of different soilmediums
Lynda Wightman from Hunter Industries then explainedthe basic principals in irrigation and system workings MikeMyers also with Hunter spoke on efficiencies and the moredetailed aspects of operating a system
The day concluded with Bengals head sports turf manag-er Darian Daily giving the participants a tour of the stadiumand explaining the process of the new FieldTurf system thatis being installed at the facility When we walked out onto thefield we saw temperature readings shoot from 101 degreesto 137 degrees within minutes once the sun popped out Thisis even before they had the infill material in the carpet
The second day began with Jeff Emgbroff of HunterIndustries speaking on the design aspects of irrigation sys-tems The group was then split up into three groups that rotated around tothree different stations The three topics we covered were Irrigation head trou-bleshooting controller troubleshooting and valve troubleshooting

try to attend our outdoor fall field day 1 trade show and equipment demonstra-tion day Tuesday August 17 at Plainsboro Township Community ParkPlainsboro NJ
As the green industry becomes more specialized and small organizationsbecome established to provide education for their membership it becomesmore and more difficult for supporters of the industry to remain effective Likepieces of a pie each organization establishes its part As the number of organi-zations grows the pieces of the pie grow smaller
It is only through communication and the cooperation of the entire industrythat these individual organizations can benefit their membership without beinga drain on an industry that otherwise continues to splinter
Sports Field Managers Association of New Jersey is an organization thatwas established four years ago based on the need for specialized education inthe athletic field maintenance area of the green industry SFMANJ continues tofoster cooperation and communication with other organizations dedicated tosimilar missions We are committed to establishing and maintaining lines ofcommunication with these organizations to maximize the benefits of their spe-cialized knowledge and expertise while at the same time minimizing unhealthycompetition that only serves to dilute the potential synergistic development ofthe green industry
There will be time allotted for spectators to spend time with the equip-ment dealers and operate any of the equipment being demonstrated Comeshow your support to the industry Registration information can be down-loaded from SFMANJorg on the web or contact us at (908) 730-7770

Our final stop was Calpe which was another impressive facility with one turffield and one synthetic Our game was at night and so there were no grounds per-sonnel around to talk to but the turf was Bermuda mowed tight and it was a deepshade of green indicating some fertilization and irrigation was being used
Whether it is wear spots lack of resources or a lack of trained professionals theone constant with turf management in the US is we all have similar problems

try to attend our outdoor fall field day 1 trade show and equipment demonstra-tion day Tuesday August 17 at Plainsboro Township Community ParkPlainsboro NJ

One big tentSPltrtsField Managers Association of New Jersey invites the green indus-
try to attend our outdoor fall field day 1 trade show and equipment demonstra-tion day Tuesday August 17 at Plainsboro Township Community ParkPlainsboro NJ

OSTMA gets zoned in atPaul Brown Stadium
BY BOYD MONTGOMERY CSFM
Boyd HRobH Montgomery CSFM is director of facilities and maintenancefor Sylvania Recreation Corp Sylvania OH and is treasurer of the SportsTurf Managers Association He can be reached at turfmanthewavezcom

One big tentSPltrtsField Managers Association of New Jersey invites the green indus-
try to attend our outdoor fall field day 1 trade show and equipment demonstra-tion day Tuesday August 17 at Plainsboro Township Community ParkPlainsboro NJ
