With the ongoing application period to take the National Competi-tive Examination (NCE), the admis-sion examination of PSHS, the PSHS’ information campaign is in full-blast. This effort aims to reach out to more Filipino youth and encourage them to vie for PSHS scholarship. The NCE Caravan is a tradi-tion among PSHS faculty members and administrative staff as they visit schools and various local communi-ties in their respective areas to dis-seminate the information about NCE. They bring NCE application forms, posters, flyers, etc. with them to sup-port the campaign. For the first time in PSHS System’s history, an advertising mate-rial is created primarily for social me-dia engagement. The PSHS System Promo-tional Video 2017 coined as “PangPisayTo” video composed of three series or versions and has a time duration ranging from 30 to 50 seconds per series. Directed by Mr. Jeffrey D. Hi-dalgo, PSHS alumnus batch 1994, the video featured the three core science

subjects in PSHS: Physics (first se-ries), Chemistry (second series), and Biology (third series). The first series, released in PSHS System’s official Facebook page in the evening of July 4, featured a young boy playing in a community basketball. During time-out, this young kid asked his coach how many New-tons of Force will it require to shoot the ball into the hoop. He left his coach and his team mates speech-less. Then, the coach uttered, “Pang Pisay To!” Two weeks after the first se-ries made its debut in social media, the first series earned about 140,000 views with 2,700 reactions and 169 comments from the viewers. The vid-eo was shared 2,390 times. The second series, released a week later in the same platform, fea-tured a provincial setting where a young boy was helping his sister do the laundry in their backyard. The young boy fetched water from the “poso” or deep well used to access groundwater. The sister complained that the laundry soap that he

(young boy) bought does not lather very well. The young boy explained that soaps do not lather in fresh water (ground water from “poso”) because fresh water has calcium and magnesi-um ions that break the fatty acids in the soap. Then, the sister exclaimed, “Pang Pisay To!” The third and last series, re-leased on July 18 was set in a kitchen with a mother washing broccoli in the sink. The daughter came in and start-ed saying that such vegetables are prone to different types of bacteria. The mother explained that washing and steaming can kill the bacteria, and the daughter further noted that broccoli is a goitrogenic food, “it has isothiocyanites that can cause hypo-thyroidism”. Then, the mother said “Pang Pisay To!” The second and third series both received public attention with more than 45,000 views for each vid-eo, in a matter of one week after its date of release.

The 2017 Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environ-ment (GLOBE) Asia Pacific Regional Meeting was held on May 22-24, 2017 in Manila. The PSHS System, as the country’s coordinator for GLOBE, hosted the three-day event followed by the National Teachers Training (NTT) on May 25-27. The Regional Meeting was attended by GLOBE coordinators from 16 participating countries in the Asia Pacific region, namely Fiji, India, Mal-dives, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Palau, Philippines, Republic of China (Taiwan), South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United States of America

(U.S.A), and Vietnam. GLOBE Implemen-tation Office Director Dr. Anthony Murphy and GLOBE Project Web Man-ager Dr. Cornell Lewis, both from the U.S.A, joined the meeting. Dr. Murphy gave an overview and up-dates on the GLOBE pro-gram including 2017 high-lights and metrics (number of manual observations in every country collecting

data) while Dr. Lewis reported about the GLOBE website and its new fea-tures. The coordinators also went through a training session to gauge their knowledge on GLOBE protocols. “The GLOBE Program in Asia is one of the most successful science and environmental education hands-on activities in the region. In the re-cent years there is greater interest among students and teachers to join in this program and participate in stu-dent research exchange activities and projects,” stated by Dr. Desh Bandhu in the event primer. Dr. Bandhu is the President of the Indian Environmental Society and the Coordinator of the GLOBE

Regional Coordination Office for Asia Pacific. The NTT that followed was attended by 37 teachers from PSHS, and 49 teachers from Department of Education schools in Quezon City. GLOBE coordinators from India, Mal-dives, Fiji, Micronesia, and New Zea-land also joined the training. Ms. Elenida Basug, PSHS Alumna Batch 78 and currently the Chief of the Environmental Education and Information Division of the Envi-ronmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natu-ral Resources, was among the re-source speakers invited to share their expertise in the teacher training. Ms. Basug discussed the environmental initiatives in the Philippines. “As the DOST-PSHS System aims to prepare its scholars to be-come globally-competitive Filipino sci-entists, it also prepares its human re-sources to be equally competitive in the international standards. Enhance-ment of one’s knowledge and skills will allow significant contributions to the country’s maximum economic devel-opment and the world’s sustainable development,” mentioned PSHS Sys-tem Executive Director Lilia T. Habacon in the event primer.

Dr. Tupas introduced the PSHS to STEM education experts from the U.S. who could share their best practices in teaching STEM edu-

cation. Dr. Tupas and Ms. Ana Maria Chupungco (Research Teacher from PSHS Main Campus) headed a num-ber of PSHS teachers in their confer-ence with the STEM education ex-perts. This conference with the STEM education experts in the U.S. and PSHS teachers in the Philippines was made possible with the use of a video conferencing program enabling inter-action of multiple parties via the lnter-net. In 2014, the U.S. Embassy also arranged with the NSF the tem-

porary assignment of Dr. David Campbell (a scientist from NSF). For a period of 10 weeks, Dr. Campbell visited a number of PSHS campuses, and provided training and expert ad-vice to PSHS administrators and fac-ulty members. He also rendered ser-vice as Resource Speaker to the 1st QCSCFI Educator's Forum held on March 14, 2014 which gathered 185 science teachers from 45 public high schools in Quezon City. By John Vincent K. Forteza, PSHS CALABARZON Region Campus (CBZRC) PSHS-CBZRC has transferred to its permanent campus at Sitio Sam-paga West, Brgy. Sampaga, Batangas City at the onset of June 2017, and had its blessing ceremony last July 15. The said event, which was graced by Batangas City Mayor Bev-erly Rose A. Dimacuha, her Secretary Atty. Victor Reginald Dimacuha, and Sampaga Brgy. Captain Moises Dudas, was presided by Rev. Fr. Romy Barrion and attended by CBZRC faculty and staff headed by the Campus Director Dr. Jose M. An-daya. “We support all the programs of Pisay-CALABARZON ever since,” Mayor Dimacuha stated in an inter-

view after the blessing, sharing that Pisay-CALABARZON, being estab-lished in Batangas City, is both a chal-lenge and a blessing. “Actually, pangarap talaga ng local government ng Batangas City na maitayo dito sa Batangas City ang Pisay (it’s been a dream of the local government of Batangas City to have a PSHS campus in Batangas City),” she added. In a conversation with Dr. An-daya, Mayor Dimacuha and her secre-tary shared the local government’s plan to construct a diversion road from the South Luzon Express Way to Brgy. Sampaga which will allow for a more accessible route to CBZRC. Needless to say, this diversion road will lessen the travel period to CBZRC especially for clienteles who come from outside Batangas City. Meanwhile, Brgy. Captain Dudas assured the CBZRC communi-

ty that the campus is ‘in good hands’ since Sampaga is one of the peaceful barangays in Batangas City. “Safe naman dito sa Sampaga. In fact, mababa ang crime rate dito at pi-nuproseso na namin ang application para maging ‘drug-free’ community na ang Sampaga (It’s safe here in Sam-paga. In fact, the crime rate is low and we are now processing the application for Sampaga to be a drug-free com-munity).” Dudas also promised that lo-cal security officers will patrol the area 24/7 to ensure maximum safety of the community. Up to the present, the three-storey Academic Building 1 temporari-ly houses the offices and the class-rooms, while the four-storey Boy’s Dormitory is now ready for occupancy of all intern scholars, pending the con-struction of the Girl’s Dormitory. Moreover, the constructions of cafeteria and administration building are still on going as of press time, with the former expected to become func-tional by August 3, 2017. Formerly, the CBZRC was situated at Bahay Kaalaman, a centu-ry-old building within the compound of Batangas National High School in Ri-zal Avenue at the heart of the town proper. In an interview with the stu-

dent publication, The Southern Taga-

log, August to December 2016 issue,

Curriculum and Instruction Division

Chief Jorge M. Job expressed his

gratitude to the local government for

letting the campus use the said build-

ing. “The entire school is grateful for

generously allowing us to use the en-

tire building and all of its facilities. The

entire PSHS family will be forever

thankful for the two years of stay in

Bahay Kaalaman,” he said.

By PSHS Central Luzon Campus In pursuit of building and strengthening international linkages, Philippine Science High School-Central Luzon Campus (PSHS-CLC) welcomed graduate students from Pe-king University, Beijing, China togeth-er with guests from the Bases Conver-sion and Development Authority (BCDA), and the University of the Phil-ippines, Diliman on July 18, 2017. The graduate students were warmly accommodated in PSHS-CLC

for their study tour which was one of the main purposes of their ten-day stay in the Philippines from July 15-25, 2017. The highlights of their visit in the campus were their remarkable and at the same time enjoyable experiences with the Chemistry and Life Sciences Unit faculty and with the Fabrication Laboratory leaders. They were presented with and engaged in a science experiment ac-tivity in their visit in the school’s sci-ence laboratories. With the help of the faculty members from the Chemistry and Life Sciences Unit, they were able to tour around and try some of the equipment. They were welcomed with a fun activity that was also being intro-duced to the Grade 10 students of PSHS-CLC. The activity was used as an introduction to electrophoresis technique using a fictional forensic investigation case. The activity used food colors, agar, buffers, and electro-phoresis set-up that made it amusing and safe. It was also a way to appreci-ate the role of science in our society. The visitors were happy to see that

PSHS-CLC could introduce science techniques in a pleasurable and inter-esting way. Another engaging part of the students’ tour was their fun experience in the PSHS-CLC Fabrication Labora-tory where the school produces 3D outputs using different materials like wood and acrylic among others. The visitors were introduced to various laser-cut and laser-engraved products as well as 3D-printed outputs made using the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) – a computer-controlled high precision tool which produces more precise products as compared with manual machining. Overall, the guests had a very good experience in their study tour in PSHS-CLC as they experienced en-joyable learning activities in the field of Science and Technology which not only showcased the school’s ad-vanced educational trainings and facil-ities but also inspired the Peking Uni-versity graduate students to bring with them a significant memory to be gladly shared when they come home.

Guided Robotic Arm for Spe-cial Purpose (GRASP) is a research developed by the PSHS Central Lu-zon Campus (CLC) scholars Francis Rey G. Tolentino, Kenneth L. Suarez, and Nyle Aldrin S. Maliwat. The schol-ars are supervised by their teacher, Mr. Joel T. Bautista. The research GRASP is one of the 7 selected proposals in the Young Innovators Program (YIP) of the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), an attached agency of the Department of Science and Tech-nology.

The YIP, launched this year as part of PCIEERD’s 7th year anni-versary celebration, is a program that recognizes the researches of the youth and provides grants for these. In a video presentation fea-tured in Pinoy Science official Face-book page, Suarez described their research as, “about designing a sys-tem that allows a user to remotely control a humanoid robotic arm which mimics the movements of the user’s arm.” Suarez added, “ultimately, making the user become the robot”. Risks in conducting rescue mission and working in hazardous

places are the problems that motivat-ed these scholars to develop GRASP. Tolentino, the leader of the team, mentioned that the designs of the robots that we have today have limited capabilities. Thus, these robots cannot completely replace the pres-ence of humans in high-risk areas. Then, their team saw that the human hands are capable of doing multiple tasks that are valuable in rescue mis-sion and hazardous areas. Tolentino further explained, “ginawa namin ang research na ito base sa katawan ng tao (we made this research based on the human body).” He then added, “Importante ang re-search kasi pwede sya ma-apply sa maraming jobs (the research is im-portant because it can be applied to many jobs)… It allows people to work over a distance.” With this innovation, rescuers and workers are spared of the need to go to high-risk areas to fulfill their mission/tasks.

“Importante ang research kasi pwede sya ma-apply sa maraming jobs (the research is important because it can be applied to many jobs)”.

PHILIPPINE SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL SYSTEM OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Agham Road, Diliman, Quezon City (02) 939-PSHS (7747)

Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System takes another step forward to attaining the Interna-tional Organization for Standardiza-tion (ISO) certification. In the first half of the year (2017), PSHS campuses and the Office of the Executive Direc-tor (OED) underwent a Quality Man-agement Orientation System (QMS) and Seminar Workshop. This was facilitated by PSHS System ISO Con-sultant, Mr. Dexter Chua. Due to the geographical dis-tance of the PSHS campuses and the OED from each other, the orientation was held per campus/OED with only one facilitator, Mr. Chua, to share his knowledge and expertise in ISO

9001:2015 QMS. Part of the ISO 9001:2015

QMS implementation is the use of standardized manuals and forms. One document controller is assigned per campus, and one in the OED. Document Controllers are in charge of handling QMS documented infor-mation, ensuring that it’s up-to-date before disseminating it to the end-users in their area of responsibility.

By December 2016, initial QMS documented information was disseminated to all campuses. These manuals/forms were also uploaded to the PSHS System’s official website for public information and transparen-cy measures.

On September 6-8, 2017, the PSHS System will hold a system-wide Internal Quality Audit (IQA) workshop, aligned with ISO 9001:2015. This workshop will con-vene the campuses’ and the OED’s IQA Team composed of the Quality Management Representative, and Lead Internal Quality Auditor. The objectives for conducting this workshop are: to enhance the participant's knowledge, skills, and appreciation of the auditing process-es, and to guide them in drafting the auditing checklist that will be used in evaluating the campuses’ and the OED’s compliance to the approved standards.
