The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted worldwide, which amounts to approximately 1.3 billion tons per year. When this figure is converted to calories, it means that about 1 in 4 calories intended for consumption is never actually eaten. Food loss and food waste usually refer to the decrease of food in subsequent stages of the food supply chain, 46 initial production down 46 final household consumption. The decrease may be accidental or intentional, but eventually leads to less food available for all.

According to the FAO, the food 47 by retailers and consumers in the most developed countries would be more than enough to feed all of the world's 870 million hungry people. At the retail level, large quantities of food are rejected 48 quality standards that over-emphasize appearance. At the consumer level, insufficient purchase planning and expiring "best-before-dates" also cause large amounts of waste, in combination with the careless attitude of those who can afford to waste food.

Food loss and waste have many negative economic and environmental impacts. They 49 resources since the production of food has to consume vast quantities of water, fertilizer, land, labor and capital; meanwhile, the fuel burned to process, refrigerate and transport food also adds to the environmental cost. Most food waste is thrown away in landfills, 50 it decomposes and releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, which contributes to global warming as well as climate change.

Text 1

Humans of New York, also known as HONY for short, is a blog owned by a photographer, Brandon Stanton. It has become a beloved social media resource enjoyed by millions around the world.

Stanton started to work on HONY when he moved to New York City after giving up a successful career as a stockbroker to do something more fulfilling. He endeavored to photograph 10,000 portraits and plot them on a map of his new home city. This idea has then unexpectedly become Humans of New York.

Every day, Humans of New York brings millions of people together to reflect on the stories and photos of strangers. Most photos are shot wherever an interesting subject is encountered by Stanton. The trademark quotations that accompany each HONY portrait are the product of carefully constructed interviews Stanton holds with his subjects. Stanton said he is able to convince people to share personal stories with him through his genuine concern for their wellbeing and his desire to get to know them. It is the story of the human experience that takes center stage. No filters or celebrity influences; just a page dedicated to displaying real thoughts from real humans. For many HONY fans, part of its power is that the posts seem to speak to the universality of the human experience, despite humans' differences.

HONY today is not the idea Stanton had five years ago. It is now a project dedicated to not only New Yorkers, but humans of the world. It is a mix of photography and storytelling, a true social media phenomenon, and a powerful force for good. It is the result of what he calls "hundreds of small evolutions." Once you make your request, you'll be enjoying your dessert within minutes if a vehicle is available. And there is even a one-day-only strawberry flavor specially made for the event.
