ERP or Best of Breed – Fundamental differencies
Depth of functionality CMMS
– CMMS systems are developed with the maintenance processes in focus
– Deeper functionality for maintenance specific tasks
– Covering ”Best practice”
Depth of functionality ERP – ERP systems are built around accounting– ERP systems often takes Fixed asset module
in accounting as starting point– Covering basic mainentance functionality

Fundamentals – How to evaluate functionality
Create scenarios– Include live data– Identify the 10 most important processes– Include different role perspectives on the process
• The planner• The operator• The Maintenance worker• The Maintenance manager• The plant manager• Finance• Inventory manager• Purchaser• Requestor• The system administrator
– How well does the system support the different roles?– What is the effort behind configuring the scenaro
Do not forget to evaluate the people that will implement

ERP or Best of Breed – Fundamental differencies
Development focus ERP– Maintenance module is not focus –
considered as one module among others– Much effort inte covering legal aspects of
SCM,, Finance, HR– Developed for the typical office worker role
Development focus CMMS– Aligned with and following new
maintenance concepts– Emerging into Work force management– Covering all Asset classes– All development resources
concentrated on Maintenance functionality
– Industry solutions for specific industry needs
– Developed for the typical Maintenance oriented roles
– Evolving inte EAM

ERP or Best of Breed – Fundamental differencies
Third party partners ERP
– Third party implementation partners focusing on core modules such as Finance, SCM, Production
Upgradability
– Upgrading the ERP solution is a major project effecting the whole organisation
Third party partners CMMS
– Focusing on Maintenance specific value adding content ie planning modules, mobility, reporting, rounding etc.

Interfaces - Recommendations
Scenario 1 Purchase & Inventory in SAP– Recommended if Inventory and Purchase are already implemented in SAP for
MRO type materials Scenario 2 Purchase in SAP
– Consider the purchase organisation – same purchase for both maintenance/technical as for production?
Scenario 3– Consider if purchase is separated between mantenance/technical and production– Consider invoice entry solution – scanning? Manual entry? Using MAXIMO
workflow for the approval process?
