June 18, 2017 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ

Dear Friends in Christ,

Today we celebrate Father’s Day. As we did last month on

Mother’s Day, we will offer a novena of masses for our living

and deceased fathers. All Father’s Day Memorial envelopes

will be placed on the altar starting today and will remain there

for the rest of the month of June. Thank you to all our fathers

for your continuing example of St. Joseph that you bring to

your families.

We welcome Dominican Father John Maria Devaney who will

speak at each of our masses this weekend in regards to our

second collection for the Society of the Propagation of the

Faith. If Father looks familiar to some of you, he was the

Retreat Master for our Cluster Retreat we held last month for

three evenings. Welcome back Fr. Devaney!

We also welcome back to Immaculate Fr. John Aajei. Father

was with us for the summer two years ago and was of vital

help to me as I became accustomed to my new assignment.

Father John will be with us through mid-September.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Body and

Blood of Christ or, as the majority of us know this day by,

Corpus Christi Sunday. This feast goes back to the 13th

century; but it celebrates something far older - the institution

of the Sacrament of Holy Communion at the Last Supper.

Every year on this feast day, I share the story of the Sisters of

Corpus Christi. To remind you again, they are a group of

Sisters who live a cloistered life in a monastery located in the

Hunts Point section of the Bronx. The Corpus Christi

Monastery is the oldest Dominican Monastery in the United

States; a 128-year-old branch of the first monastery of nuns

founded by St. Dominic de Guzman in Prouilhe, France in

1206.

The main focus of their vocation is the twenty-four-hour

adoration of the Blessed Sacrament that takes place in the

Corpus Christi chapel. In that adoration, each nun prays for a

number of priests and seminarians serving parishes and

studying for the priesthood in the Archdiocese of New York.

God bless Sr. Mary of the Sacred Heart for the hours and years

of prayers she has been offering for me! The sisters also pray

for the people of the Archdiocese and their needs.

Today the Monastery celebrates its 128th Anniversary. Behind

the cloistered walls, is truly a place of paradise, tranquility and

peace. Hunts Point is not the trendiest place to live, but these

sisters bring grace and through their imitation of Christ, a

loving sense of mercy to that section of the Bronx. One can

say they are diamonds in the rough. The Holy Sacrifice of the

Mass, which I have had the honor to celebrate many times for

these holy women, is offered daily. They are also the sisters

who provide us with the communion hosts we use to celebrate

each of our masses here.

Please visit their website to find out more about this cloistered

order of nuns at www.opbronx.org. May we keep them in our

prayers as they keep each of us in their prayers every day!

May the body and blood of our Lord and Savior give us the

constant strength and grace to live out our discipleship.

- Fr. Herbert T. DeGaris

As of Friday, June 9th, our parish has pledged $34,905.00. This

amount comes from 156 individual gifts. This puts us at 64%

of our goal of $54,000.00.

FOOD PANTRY NEWS Thank you so much to everyone who has been

contributing fruit and cereal to the Immaculate

Conception food pantry. We hope that you are not tired

of purchasing the same items each week. However,

because we receive a small operating grant from the

state, we must follow state guidelines as to amounts

when packing bags to be distributed. Since we serve

about 70 families a week, we distribute over 1000 cans

of fruit a month! That is why fruit is our greatest need.

We would not be able to provide the proper number of

fruit servings per person without your help. Thank you

again!

Please Make A Will And Remember Your Parish -

Most of us own more than we realize. But no matter

the size of an estate, if you want to provide for your

surviving relatives and others, you need to have a

will. If you die without making a will, you lose the

ability to control the disposition of your assets. The

law of the state will tell your family where your

money and property goes. Your bequest can be a

specific amount of money, property or stock.

Naming our Parish as a charitable beneficiary is

simple. To make a gift, simply include the following

words in your will: I give, devise, and bequeath to

Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church

of Stony Point, New (here you write the amount

being given) to be used for the needs of the

Church).
