A Message From St. Vincent de Paul

The St. Vincent de Paul Society will continue to

collect winter hats, socks, mittens and gloves for

those in abuse programs and veterans in need. The

box will be located at the back of the church and in

    the lower chapel.

Message from: St. Vincent de Paul Society

    Dear St. Michael Parishioners

The St. Vincent de Paul Society has been most gen-

erously supported by the St. Michael’s Parish,

which has enabled us to do the good works you see

on the previous page. The members of The Society

are volunteers and every penny donated goes to the

people of Hudson in need. In addition to the finan-

cial needs we were able to meet, we also made re-

ferrals to our great Hudson Food Pantry for food ,

and to Fresh Start Furniture Bank for household

goods and also to other agencies and services.

We were all stopped in our tracks in March, due to

Covid19, but the needs of our Friends of Hudson

were still needing to be met. Our work at SVDP

continues to keep helping those Friends.

As we go forward in our work, we once again must

reach out to you for your help. Next weekend, Dec.

12 & 13 is our Annual Collection. We humbly ask

you to contribute what you can, by using the special

envelope in your packets, and by just depositing

directly to our boxes in the Church, or by mailing

your donations to: St. Vincent de Paul, at 20 High

    Street, Hudson, 01749

financeiras que pudemos atender, também fizemos

recomendações para nosso grande Hudson Food

Pantry para alimentos e para o Fresh Start Furniture

Bank para produtos domésticos. Também para outras

agências e serviços.Fomos todos parados no nosso

caminho em março devido ao Covid19, mas as

necessidades dos nossos amigos de Hudson

    Celebration of Immaculate Conception

    On Tuesday December 8, 2020

Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 am, for Immaculate

Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

    D 6, 2020

Full of Grace from the Womb . . .

I learned about the Immaculate Conception

from reading the autobiography of the moviedirector

and actor John Huston. He was an alcoholic, and at

one point in the book recounted the story of an occa-

sion when he had wanted to quit drinking. He was on

location shooting a movie at the time, and so he made

a deal with the bartender at the hotel bar where he

was staying. He had the bartender swear that, no mat-

ter what, he wouldn’t serve him a drink. Later on,

Huston was desperate for a drink, but the bartender

stuck to his promise. Huston swore that he wanted to

call the deal off, but the barkeep wouldn’t budge. Fi-

nally, Huston made a bet with the guy: he asked what

the Immaculate Conception was. The bartender said it

referred to the virgin birth of Christ; Huston told him,

no: it’s the teaching that the Virgin Mary was con-

ceived without original sin. They would call the local

parish and ask the priest: if the filmmaker was right,

he got his drink; if the bartender was correct, Huston

    would stop pestering him.

     Huston got his drink.

The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is

a beautiful truth about Our Lady, and a deep mystery

for us to contemplate as part of our devotion to the

Blessed Mother. But it also reminds us of the frailty

of the human condition, which for the rest of us is

damaged by original sin. John Huston’s own story is a

vivid testimony to this fact. His own human weakness

crippled him, so that he was mastered by the depend-

ency on alcohol that he developed.

There is a bruised and tender spot in the soul

of each of us, left over from the wound of original sin

even after we’ve been baptized. We need to be delib-

erate and diligent about shaping our conscience and

growing in holiness, or else we can so easily succumb

to our fragility. We need to be open to God’s grace

that we receive in the sacraments; we need to disci-

pline ourselves to develop a habit of virtue; we need

to lift our eyes to Heaven in prayer and in contempla-

tion of Sacred Scripture. It’s no easy task, and it’s not

something we simply stumble in to. It requires a firm-

ness of purpose along with the assistance of God’s

grace and the prayers of all the saints. Our ultimate

purpose is to become what we’re beckoned to be

what Mary is by that singular grace of her natureto

    be full of grace.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us

    who have recourse to you.

Cheio de graça desde o ventre. . .

Eu aprendi sobre a Imaculada Conceição

lendo a autobiografia do diretor de cinema e ator John

Huston.

bar do hotel onde estava hospedado. Ele fez o

    O Dear sweet Infant Jesus,

I offer You my will, that You strengthen it,

    of Your most Holy Mother Mary;

I commend myself to all and
