IN MEMORIAM

Florence (Flo) Abarean Morrison, a 35 year resident of Jamul, a Kiwanian, and Highway 94 Club member passed away June 15 at a care facility in Irvine, CA. Her husband of 58 years, Donovan (Don) Morrison was at her side. She was 84 years old.

Flo was born in Atlanta, GA on 10-20-30. She attended Whittier College in CA where she received her teaching credential and met her future husband, Don. Flo and Don married in 1956. Flo taught school, mostly Home Economics, in Lone Pine, Norwalk, Anaheim, and 20 years in National City.

Flo was active with the Highway 94 Club and the Kiwanis Club of Greater Jamul. She was involved with organizing and running the Kiwanis rummage sale and holiday food drive for many years. Flo was also known as the Kiwanis Club “health inspector” for any cooking events, she held us all to a high standard of excellence.

Flo loved quilting and making Pomegranate jelly which she enjoyed giving to family and friends.

After retiring from teaching in 1987 Flo and Don became world travelers. Don reminisced that their favorite trips were their four cruises to Hawaii. Although on their other travels they collected Turkish, Arabic, and Chinese carpets which adorned their home.

Flo is survived by her husband, Donovan Morrison, their son Bill and his wife Inga. She also is survived by her sister, Violet and was preceded in death by a brother, Armen.

GEOFF COPELAND RECIPIENT OF

KIWANIS "DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

By Stephanie Kramer At the Kiwanis Governor's Dinner held in San Diego on May 1st, Jamul Kiwanian Geoff Copeland was awarded the "Distinguished Service Award". A much deserv-ing award for a person who has dedicated his entire life to "community service". Geoff joined the Kiwanis Club of Greater Jamul in 2007. He has served as the club's Treasurer, and also served as Chaplain and participates in nearly all the many activities of the local Kiwanis. Geoff has been a lifelong volunteer of the highest level. He was born and raised on the South Island of New Zealand, on a sheep farm (what else: in those days they said 60 million sheep lived in New Zealand, and a few million people). The farmer boy went to Bible College and found out about Bible Translation missions. He spent 16 years in Papua New Guinea, contributing to the work of translating the bible into native languages. While there he met and married Bonnie, his wife of nearly 40 years. Geoff moved to San Diego County, Bonnie's home turf, when their third son was born with extenuating medi-cal needs. He attended Bethel Seminary, and earned a Masters of Divinity and became a Hospice Chaplain. For 17 years he provided spiritual care for the dying. During those years Geoff served his church and was active with his boys in the Boy Scouts of America. After the boys were grown, Geoff continued his volunteer activities. He has found a real "home:" in the volunteering he has done for several years with the Kiwanis organization. Over the last 11 years, his desire to help and serve has taken him several times to Myanmar (Burma) to teach at a local Bible Seminary in Rangoon and to teach in a small Bible College in Lashio, deep in Burma where he taught English as a second language using biblical materi-als. He has also assisted teaching English in Cambodia to a group of people translating farming and health materials in their own language. Geoff is also very action locally with Burmese refugees in San Diego, maintaining a strong rela-tionship with the Karen Organization of San Diego, a group that serves Burmese refugees here: ones who escaped brutal extermination at the hands of a government hostile to certain ethnic groups. In recent years Geoff has connected with Harvest Crops, a group that uses volunteers to pick fresh fruit from the trees of those who have too much and are willing to share their plenty with those who have need. Along with this, he still occasionally makes it a point to visit one who is sick and needs an encouraging word. He does all with humility and passion to help others. Jamul is fortunate to have such a wonderful person sharing his good deeds with our Jamul Community. Congratulations, Geoff.

Country, three of which are in California. They were being illegally operated and.or their land did not qualify for gambling. This drew cheers from the crowd. Supervisor Dianne Jacob informed the group that SDG&E was planning to provide electricity to the construction/casino site from the Rancho San Diego Substation underground on Hwy 94. This will cause traffic delays - - again! 90% of all Sheriff's calls are casino related stated Eileen Poole, retired principal of Steele Canyon High School. She also spoke of the dangers on Hwy 94, given the many fatal accidents that have happened near the high school. "We don't need another 6000 cars a day on this dangerous highway," she said. Donations are needed to continue the fight in the courts. They can be sent to JAC, P O Box 1316, Jamul, CA 91935. Note: A KUSI Report from Michael Turko titled A Slap In the Face! is worth reviewing, he states: Some East County residents called KUSI's MichaelTurko when a big piece of agricultrual land became a parking lot over night. Turko says it's part of a controversial new casino project and the parking lot was built with no permits, and no notice to the neighbors. The acquisition may also allow us to expand the San Dieguito River Park's Coast to Crest Trail. The 175 acres is west of state Route 79 and north of the SR-79 and SR-78 intersection. This is great news for hikers, horse enthusiasts and others who enjoy our gorgeous back country.

The county Fire Authority recently opened a new fire station in Boulevard, our latest effort to improve fire protection and emergency medical services in rural East county. It's the first station to house Fire Authority reserves,Cal Fire firefighters and a paramedic unit under one roof. The facility is the latest sign of how far we've come since the disastrous fire storms of 2003 and 2007. In 2003, our efforts to fight the Cedar Fire and other catastrophic wildfires were hampered by poor commu-nication and coordination among agencies, along with a lack of resources. SDG&E to begin construction work in late July

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) will begin construction on a new electric circuit in approximately late July. The project, located within the Caltrans right of way of Hwy 94, will, for the most part, be entirely underground.

Existing electric circuits are nearing their maximum capacity and for the past several years, SDG&E has been working on plans to upgrade its system serving the Jamul/Dulzura area. The recent application for service by a large commercial customer requires that this system upgrade be done now rather than later. SDG&E is regulated by the California Utilities Commission (CPUC) and as such, is mandated to provide service to all customers within its service territory.

The new circuit will accommodate the load of the new customer and also provide increased electric capacity and improve reliability for the existing and future customers in the Jamul/Dulzura communities.

SDG&E and its contractors will construct the new electric circuit in accordance with the standards established by the California Public Utilities Commission and will adhere to environmental and traffic control conditions required by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

Surveying and planning work began in April 2015 and construction is expected to begin in approximately late July. The project is expected to be completed by January 1, 2016.Working hours are anticipated to be Monday – Saturday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. However, Caltrans may, at times, require work hours that vary from this schedule to meet local traffic needs. Given the potential impacts of the project on this important thoroughfare, SDG&E will work as quickly and safely as possible to reduce the timeframe of the project. In addition, off-hour work schedules in consultation with Caltrans will be considered in order to minimize impacts to community events and schools. SDG&E will make every effort to communicate work progress and schedule changes as the project progresses. Community input is appreciated and over the years, has proven to contribute to the success of these projects. A telephone hotline has been established to receive community input for this project. Your patience throughout this project is appreciated. Please feel free to use the project hotline (1-866-382-0886) to communicate your suggestions or concerns.

CommentaryWellness Cornerby Jessica tyack

HEALTHY SUMMERTIME SWIMMING HABITS - -With summer approaching, many of us will spend a lot of time in and near a swimming pool. There is no better way to cool off and relax, but for most of us it will be in a swimming pool, one that is most likely maintained through chemicals. I want to share four easy ways you can reduce the effects of chlorine and other pool chemicals in your health. These are found on the website, Holisticquid.comTip 1: Swim outdoors - For most of us that is not an issue, especially regarding a swimming pool, but also take into consideration a hot tub or Jacuzzi also use chemicals as well and they may be stored in a covered or enclosed area. Indoor swimming is more likely to cause respiratory or digestive problems, simply because there is no ventilation for fumes to escape.

Tip 2: Rinse off BEFORE getting in the pool - Rinsing off before swimming can help protect your body against absorbing the chemicals in the pool. Our skin and hair act like a giant sponge - if able to rinse off before hand the body will absorb the clean water first potentially not the pool water.

Tip 3: Rub on Coconut Oil: Healthy skin is cov-ered in a very thin, slightly acidic film called the "acid mantle" that is secreted from the skin's sebaceous (oil) glands. The pH of bacteria, viruses, and other chemicals are primarily alkaline in nature, so the acid mantle acts as both a physical and chemical barrier to bacteria, viruses, and other potential con-taminants from penetrating the skin.

Coconut oil acts as a barrier to the pool chemicals, not allowing them to pass into our bodies through

swimming. Coconut oil is also a mild sunscreen - - all natural, safe for all and can be found in stores like Costco, Trader Joe's, Sprouts and also online.

Tip 4: Neutralize chemicals with Vitamin C. When it comes to swimming, you can simply make a spray bottle with a teaspoon of powdered vitamin C (found online or a health food store) dissolved in two cups filtered wa-ter. If you don't have the time or motivation to make your own vitamin C solution, you can buy a topical spray on line <http://www.amazon.com/dp?B006J7SE6/ref=as li ss til?tag=holikid-20&camp=08creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B006J7FSE6&adid=0Q3QBR1S-729GVEGSSY54>. After swimming, spray both hair and skin with the vitamin C solution, rub in, and rinse in the shower (preferably one without chlorinated water).

Have a great summer! Enjoy the long days near the pool with your friends and family!

Not all sunscreens are the same, be sure and check yours is a "good" one to have on hand year round. Here is a great resource to guide you: http://www.ewg.org//2013sunscreen/.
