Once lived a man. His name was Valentine. He was a good doctor. Many people loved him. He was clever and kind. Valentine was put in prison and was sentenced to death. At that time people celebrated New Year in the middle of February. Children and adults came to congratulate and thank Valentine for help. The jailer ( тюремный надзиратель) had a blind daughter. And he decided to show it to Valentine. It turned out that he helped her. But she fell in love with him. So, soon Valentine was executed. The only thing he left was a love letter to his sweetheart.

Traditions of Valentine’s Day Hundreds of years ago in England, many children dressed up as adults on St.

Valentine Day. They went singing from home to home. One verse they sang was:

Good morning to you valentine;

Curl your locks as I do mine—

Two before and three behind.

Good morning to you valentine

The English also send love messages to their pets, especially

to their dogs and horses.

In Wales, they carved "Wooden Love Spoons" and were given as gifts on Valentine's Day. Special decoration like hearts, keys and keyholes were carved on the spoons. The decoration translated means "Unlock my Heart".

• In Britain on 14 February unmarried girls get up before • sunrise, stand at the window and look at passing men.• The first man, that a girl will see is her future husband.
