V I S I O N TO SEE COMMUNITIES SERVE JESUS CHRIST WHILE WORKING TO END GENERATIONAL
POVERTY.
Makarios is dedicated to cultivating a cycle of hope and
opportunity and breaking the cycle of poverty in the
Dominican Republic through Christ-centered education,
community programs, and relationships that empower.
Dear Friend:
By God’s provision and grace we have continued on a path of steady growth and impact this
past year. From identifying crucial needs to creating new programs, the power of Christ has
been evident in the lives of the students and families we serve in 2016.
With a mission to Love, Educate, and Empower, we are focussed on breaking the cycle of
poverty and replacing it with a cycle of hope and opportunity. We are so grateful for your
support and prayer, it has been the foundation of our growth and success thus far. As a
result of your meaningful contributions and prayer, children and families are experiencing
the love of Jesus Christ and being empowered to help themselves.
The Makarios school is currently PreK 3- 8th grade and continues to grow by a grade each
year. We have acquired land that borders our current property and have started the
preliminary development of our new school buildings. We also launched our Family
Empowerment program this past year. We believe if we can reach the families of our
students with the love of Christ and empower them with the tools they need to help
themselves, their children will have a greater chance of breaking the cycle of poverty.
We are inspired by what God has done in 2016 and we look forward with courage and focus
as we continue to carry out God’s call on our lives to love the poor.
With Gratitude,
Chris Buster

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
PROGRAMS & IMPACT
We provide an excellent Christian education, medical, dental, and nutritional care for children in our communities. The Makarios school is educating 165 students, ages 3-15, with a goal to
graduate students who are disciples of Jesus Christ, who are empowered, and who are equipped to confront the challenges of life.
SCHOOL
Launched in February 2017, our Family Empowerment Program is focused on the families of students at the Makarios School. We raise up local leaders by empowering them with the tools
they need to help themselves including education, spiritual development, & counseling services. This program exists to have families transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and
parents that are ethical leaders, capable of influencing their communities.
Our church partners and sponsors travel from all over the United States to take part in Ministry Trips, week week long trips for our partner churches. These trips enable us to bridge the gap
of cultures while we educate, connect, and build relationships between local Haitian and Dominican leaders. In the process, we produce mission-minded Christ followers who are
inspired to serve locally and globally.
FAMILY EMPOWERMENT
GROUP MINISTRY
Andrea joined the Makarios family first as one of our Makarios moms. She then joined the staff as a kitchen helper. But when we launched our new Family Empowerment Program, she was a frontrunner for the team of people focused on empowering families. She wants to tell you her story.
“Becoming part of the Makarios staff has been one the best experience of my life.
My life first changed by having my kids enrolled in the Makarios School. It has affected my entire family, marriage, spiritual life, and even friends. My kids and I have been learning a lot since we became part of this family.
The very first time I heard about Makarios I heard it from my neighbors who had kids already in the program. My neighbor, Charito, lives in front of my house.
She’s had a child in the program since Makarios operated in a small house in Pancho Mateo. She asked me to consider getting my kids enrolled.
Then, in the summer of 2012, a missionary named Imani Folkes came to my house to get the information of my kids. My daughter Scarlet who was 3 years old at the time became the first of my four kids to enroll.
After that, becoming part of the Makarios staff gave me the opportunity to develop my life in other areas, like learning more about the scriptures, I also gained other brothers & sisters in Christ.
I have been working in Makarios for about 11 months. I started on August 11, 2016, as a helper in the Kitchen/ cleaning until February. By the grace of God, I was moved on to the Family Empowerment Program. I am grateful for being part of this family. I have seen people’s respect towards the Church grow in my community thanks to the influence of Makarios. I can also see people developing a better sense of Community. The favorite part of my job is the opportunity to establish relationships with the families because It gives me the chance to get to know new people and ministry them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

It's easy to take the simplest things for granted. Underwear isn't the first
thing that comes to mind when it comes to donations, and there's a
great need for them.
With dirty water lines and sewers, and limited access to clean food, cleaning supplies are
necessary, especially in a major natural disaster.

We have raised almost a quarter of the total cost of building our new school! We are excited to have reached this goal and we are ready to continue to share the dream with the Mak Family.
Building the school helps us to continue growing at our current rate and realize the dream of seeing our students graduate from the Makarios School. in addition, the new building will give us a new entrance onto the property, making it easier to accommodate for the crowds of kids to walk in.
We will reach our goal in 3 Phases :
Phase 1: Build to meet classroom needs for next 3 years
Phase 2: Administrative building, offices, and additional classrooms
Phase 3: Offices for family empowerment, landscaping,
and final set of classrooms

DOMINICAN JOE COFFEE Makarios began importing coffee in 2006 to help support our
programs in the Dominican Republic. Sharla Megilligan (Makarios founder) and her business partner opened Dominican Joe Coffee Shop in Austin to sell coffee that supported Makarios programs.
After ten great years, they decided to sell the shop to the owners of Bennu in May of 2017. Bennu continues to purchase Dominican Joe brand coffee which supports Makarios.
Even though the coffee shop is closed, the Dominican Joe brand and coffee is still being sold direct to customers and businesses
alike. DoJo coffee can be purchased online. Buy pounds of coffee as gifts for friends, for your home, office,
community, or church at dominicanjoe.com.
NEW HIRES Joining the Makarios family in the summer of 2017 will be Ryan and Courtney VanArsdalen and their three daughters. Ryan and
