Mayor’s charity ball

>>Councillor Leigh Drennan will be

rolling out the red carpet for charity on Saturday, February 22, when he hosts the Civic Mayor of Tameside’s annual ball.

The event – which aptly has a red-carpet theme – takes place at Dukinfield Town Hall.

All proceeds will be donated to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal Fund which supports the LGBT Foundation; Believe and Achieve Trust; Tameside, Oldham and Glossop MIND; Millstream Animal Shelter and Tameside 4 Good.

The Civic Mayor said: “Come to the charity ball and you’ll be doing your bit to help some very good causes by having a very good

time. Surely that’s an unbeatable combination?

“Everyone’s welcome. I hope it’s a sell-out night and we make lots of money for my charity appeal.”

The evening starts with a drinks and canapes reception at 6.30pm. The formal dinner is at 7pm, followed by dancing and entertainment from “Britain’s Got Talent” semi-finalist Danny Beard.

Tables for eight people are available at a cost of £320. Individual tickets are £40 each. Dress is dinner jacket or lounge suit. To make a reservation call 0161 342 3087.

Welcome to the February issue and for those who were born on February 29th a Happy Birthday for later this month! The cover story this issue highlights the new Wellness Centre that is opening in Denton which is going to provide something unique to the residents of Denton and beyond. We also throw the spotlight on the important work The Anthony Seddon Fund do in our community and the brough’s new online radio service – My Tameside.Sadly I’ve also said goodbye to a former work colleague – Lee Marsden – in January and one of my good friends lost his dog Jacob. With February being the month of love it seems poignant to remember to love those closest to us, partners, friends or your trusted pets.

About Tameside 3

In January Cheryl Mellor, of Dizzi Gothic in Ashton, was called into service again by Hyde Fundraisers to help their latest costume project. The

group were getting some new costumes in time for their appearance at the Science Of The Timelords event at the

National Space Centre in Leicester. The new project was to create Chancellery Guards from the world of Doctor Who which first appeared during Tom Baker’s stint as The Doctor in the 1970’s. The guards included jacket, trousers, armour pieces and cloak which Cheryl created.

One of the other group members, Ray Phillips from Morpeth,

recreated the helmet and Kevin Davies in Chester made the accurate ‘Staser’ guns

for the characters.

Hyde Fundraisers have been nominated for the Queen’s Award For Voluntary Service and

successful groups are usually announced in June.

In recent years Willow Wood Hospice, Cashbox and Grafton House have been

recognised with the honour.

Work on Town Hall begins>>Work is set to start

in the New Year on repairing Ashton Town Hall in preparation for plans to bring the Grade II listed building back into use.Tameside Council’s cabinet has agreed to spend £270,000 of the £10million budget set aside for the restoration and redevelopment. The emergency repairs will safeguard the future of this significant heritage asset and prevent further deterioration. They include work to the parapet and roof and to keep the building watertight. Scaffolding already in place at the rear of the building has been designed as a working platform for any refurbishment works to speed up the process. The repairs are set to cost £120,000 with extra money allocated for a survey to establish the extent of work required for restoration and in case a contingency is required, to prevent delays. The survey is expected to take eight weeks to complete.Executive Member for Finance and Economic Growth, Cllr Oliver Ryan, said: “The condition of Ashton Town Hall has caused concern so I’m delighted that through the agreed funding of £270,000, significant work can now commence to safeguard the future of this magnificent building.“Once the building’s secured a survey will be carried out to establish what’s needed to restore Ashton Town Hall to its former glory and when fully renovated the building will become more marketable for use, breathing life back into this important civic structure.”Ashton Town Hall has been the traditional home of municipal life in Ashton since its opening in 1840 and has remained largely unchanged in layout since it was extended in 1878. As Tameside’s premier civic building, its heritage importance and significance lies in its classical façade framing the Market Square and anchoring the historic setting at the very heart of the town.

Work has taken place on how the building can be remodelled internally to support 21st Century use, the needs of the community, the regeneration of Ashton Town Centre and the building’s financial viability. Any future plans will consider the Council’s commitment to recreate the Museum of the Manchester Regiment inside. The aim is to provide an opportunity to display and access its collection in new ways and provide visitors with extraordinary experiences. The scheme is part of Vision Tameside, which is developing state-of-the-art facilities and making Ashton Town Centre a more accessible and pleasant place to visit and shop.It includes Tameside One, containing a Joint Public Service Centre – headquarters for both Tameside Council and Tameside and Glossop CCG – featuring the new Ashton Library, customer services and welfare rights, Citizens Advice, Cash Box Credit Union and Jobcentre Plus. It’s also home to Tameside College’s Advanced Skills Centre, providing students with one of the best learning resources in Greater Manchester in specialist subjects including hospitality and catering, bakery, travel and tourism, hair and beauty and business.A new Wilko store has also opened at Tameside One and Ashton Interchange is due to open in the spring, providing an attractive gateway and making it much easier to change between modes of transport, like trams and buses.A Public Realm scheme is also renewing paving around the development, as well as planting trees and installing seating and other features to create a striking town centre that attracts visitors.

February’s Fiver Fest

>>Ashton town centre businesses are gearing up

for their third Fiver Fest event in the town centre from February 15th until 29th.

The Totally Locally Fiver Fest is a big celebration of Britain’s fantastic small businesses and shops, many run by families or individuals, but ALL contributing massively to the economy of the UK and the well-being of our towns. Businesses taking part put on special £5 offers over 2 weeks, to show the diversity towns and value of what they sell, and to say thank you to the communities that support them.

It comes from the (now famous) Totally Locally £5 message showing the huge impact people spending just £5 per week in their local independent shops, can have on our High Streets.

Last year Ashton-under-Lyne was the closest town to Greater Manchester to host a Fiver Fest event and the only one in Tameside.

The event is also supported by Tameside Markets with free promotions in local media including About Tameside and Quest Media. Val Unwin from Decisions ladieswear in the town centre manages the event in Ashton. She said “We are hoping to build on the success of our previous events which brought lots of new visitors to our town to see what was on offer from local businesses. In particular it’s important to shout about Ashton’s diverse independent shopping on offer with the variety of businesses inside the market hall and lots more in the old town area. This all adds up to the best independent retail offer of any town in Greater Manchester.”

Kevin Taylor, Chair of Ashton Town Team added “Fiver Fest is a great opportunity for people to support local independent businesses which provide the lifeblood in town centres across the UK.”

Joker raises awareness for mental healthAs the Oscars loom in Hollywood the awards buzz all around one particular film, Joker, which stars Joaquin Phoenix. The film depicts a man dealing with deteriorating mental health and the theme is certainly helping to raise awareness of the condition. In Tameside residents can get support from The Anthony Seddon Fund in Ashton town centre offering a range of activities and support groups, as well as it’s drop-in service, but - above all - is a safe and welcoming environment. The Anthony Seddon Fund was set up in June 2014 by Donna Thomas and her husband Brian after the death of their son, Anthony, to offer support for those with mental health issues in Tameside. Anthony’s family, who struggled to access adequate support in the aftermath of their son’s death, vowed to continue his legacy by helping people in similar situations and by educating the wider population about mental illness. Now at their centre on George Street, Donna and the team provide support for many people who are struggling with their mental health. As well as their drop-in service, which runs from 12pm to 3pm, Monday-Friday, they offer a range of peer support groups

and therapeutic activities. This month you can help raise funds for them with their Valentine event being held in Stalybridge – All You Need Is Love. Not a couples event as such the message is to love and care for each other when it takes place at Stanley Square Conservative Club from 8pm until late. Entertainment is provided by Louis Devere & friends performing live plus there will be a raffle and a wall of love too. Tickets are just £5 available from The Anthony Seddon Fund in Ashton.Later this year on May 22nd another major event will be hosted at Denton Labour Club with their Movie/Musicals evening. There will be live music provided by artists including young singer Maddison Peacock who has chosen The Anthony Seddon Fund as her nominated charity. To help launch this event James Coleman from Hyde Fundraisers popped along to the

centre in his ‘Joker’ costume last month to raise awareness of the incredible work done by Donna and her team at The Anthony Seddon Fund.If you would like to find out more call into the centre based at 11, George Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, email [email protected] or visit their website www.tasfund.org.uk

The Restaurant at Tameside One plans to host the prestigious event in May.Tameside & Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust are aiming to raise a million pounds for a second scanner that is desperately needed. Why is it so urgent? The answer

is that medical imaging plays a vital role in the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of patients and is key to rapid treatment in emergency situations. Our doctors and other health professionals at the Trust tell us that CT scanning is vital in the prevention, detection and treatment of many illnesses and diseases. Goodbye Lee>>On Friday

December 20th a tragic accident stole the life of my former work colleague Lee Marsden. I had known him from my previous job at Star Cutouts as a fellow Star Wars fan and I remember his joy when we got an autographed Darth Vader cutout as a surprise by David Prowse. His life transformed when he met Eliana and her son which lead to the birth of his beautiful daughter, Sofia Leia, in 2016. Having known his mum and dad along with sister Laura, Lee was a firm family man who everyone loved.

Creative in work, a great fun personality, loyal to his family and a doting father. I can’t imagine the pain for those closest to him that his loss has meant but in true Star Wars tradition I wish him a safe journey beyond to a galaxy far, far away. XKevin Taylor

Spirit of Manchester Statuette in Tameside

>>The Spirit of Manchester award given to

the people of Greater Manchester in the wake of the Manchester Arena attack is now on display at Ashton Library.

It was presented at May’s inaugural Pride of Manchester Awards in recognition of the region’s courage and determination to choose love over hate following the tragic events of May, 2017.

The statuette was given to the entire region after the judges found it impossible to select a single winner from the many hundreds of nominations.

Ashton Library will be showing the award until Saturday, January 25. It is

being displayed in libraries as it tours all 10 Greater Manchester boroughs because they offer the best way for people to see it.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s executive member for lifelong learning, said: “Even now, almost three years on, the horrors of that awful night remain with us. However, the statuette is proof that good will always triumph over evil.

“In the days after the attack the people of Greater Manchester could have given in to hate, but instead they chose to stand together showing generosity, community spirit and love. The statuette is the embodiment of that decision and I’m proud to have it on display in Tameside.”

>>You might not expect men on a building site to talk

about their feelings. But apprentice paviours are supporting Tameside Council’s Open Up campaign to encourage men to seek help if they are experiencing domestic abuse.

The message is particularly pertinent in light of three domestic homicide reviews (DHR) which are currently taking place in the borough, where the victims were all men.

Domestic abuse isn’t just violence, it can also involve controlling and coercive behaviour such as controlling someone’s money or preventing them from seeing family and friends. There is local support and help available for all victims of domestic abuse – both men and women - see www.tameside.gov.uk/domesticabuse or call 0800 328 0967. In an emergency you should always call 999.

The Open Up campaign, which first ran in January 2018, is being relaunched by apprentice paviours on Tuesday 8th January. It is also being supported by Tameside sports clubs – including Droylsden FC, Ashton Curzon, Mossley FC and Hyde United – who are putting up banners and posters at their grounds and adverts in their programmes to help reach local

men with the message.

There will also be posters and banners in pubs, gyms, leisure centres and sports pitches and digital advertising targeting Tameside men of all ages.

Richard Cartwright, Operational Manager of the Bridges Domestic Abuse Service in Tameside run by Jigsaw Homes said “We first ran this campaign two years ago and it was very successful, winning national recognition and really targeted males with that negative stigma. It encouraged them to come forward, talking about their experiences of domestic abuse because it increased referrals coming through to the service as well. There’s lots of people who come against barriers in disclosing

domestic abuse and the statistics say that 1 in 6 men experience domestic abuse but at our local service we only see 6 or 7% that are male victims. There’s definitely more men out there suffering in silence and not seeking the support they need.”

Tameside Council Executive Member responsible for community safety Cllr Allison Gwynne said: “It is unprecedented in Tameside to have three concurrent domestic homicide reviews for male victims. We are working with partners to look into the circumstances to see what learning can be found but clearly it is timely to reiterate the message to men experiencing domestic abuse that they can get help.

“It is believed one in six men experience domestic abuse, but they are three times less likely than women to tell anybody. Male victims may feel very isolated – and sometimes even embarrassed about what they are experiencing - but we want to assure them they are not alone; it’s not their fault and that help is available for all victims of domestic abuse - including men.

“Last time we ran this campaign we saw a huge increase in men calling our support line. We want to highlight that getting help is the strong thing to do.

Building site workers urge male domestic abuse victims to open up

Get ready for wellness

>>The date has been announced for the opening of the new Tameside Wellness Centre

in Denton town centre with the doors set to open on March 2nd. This new showpiece centre is set to become the jewel of the Active Tameside crown with state of the art facilities, fantastic accessibility and lots of community space for people to enjoy.Chris Rushton, CEO of Active Tameside said “We are privileged to be operating the Tameside Wellness Centre in Denton on behalf of the Council. In recent years, Active Tameside has led the way in the provision of integrated products and services with the aim of driving health and social outcomes within the borough. In simple terms, we aim to support Tameside residents in living their best lives and the new Wellness Centre will be in the vanguard of this quest.” The Tameside Wellness Centre in Denton will offer leisure, health and wellbeing facilities and activities for all ages and abilities. You will be able to swim, gym, relax, eat, socialise and come together as friends, as family, and as a community, in a brand-new state-of-the-art centre built around your wellbeing. Facilities include:• A 60+ station gym and fitness studio,

with group exercise classes• An eight-lane, 25-metre swimming

pool with space for 150 spectators• A learner pool, with swimming lessons• A spa, including sauna and steam room• Bowling Zone, including Hyper Bowling• Soft Play Zone• Roof space with open air gym and

sensory garden• Fuel café• A community room• Meeting rooms• Social interaction zone• Free Wi-FiVisiting the site in Denton the Chair of Active Tameside, Councillor John Taylor, said “We need to go back a few years when the council took the brave decision

not to reduce the number of facilities we had and to invest a huge amount of money in improving them. That was a brave decision in times when we were losing huge amounts of grants and millions of pounds taken from local government. This Wellness Centre is the biggest project we have developed with two pools, gym, studios – it’s all singing and dancing centre in a good location with motorway link, it couldn’t be better.” A regular visitor to site during the works has been Reg Patel, the Deputy CEO - Director of Operations and Asset Development, who added; “This is slightly outside the scope of what we have done before and when you come into this facility the foyer is the hub of the centre that feels more like a community destination point. It leads out to all the services we offer from the aquatic areas right through to the bowling lanes. On the first floor, we are developing an outdoor sensory garden and fitness zones with a sports surface, which will also function as a social zone for our community when required. We’ve added features that will bring in families and bring the community to our front door.” Once the centre opens the day to day operations will be overseen by Area Operations Manager Aidan Gilmore who is eager to begin to welcome people to the new site. “Certain aspects of this site Active Tameside have a lot of history in running successfully for the community. Yes, there are certain elements like the bowling which are new to us, but The Tameside Wellness Centre

will become an additional leisure destination venue,

bolstering

our existing attractions we offer at Adventure Longdendale and Adventure Medlock along with Hyde Leisure pool.Bringing a fantastic diverse range of family attractions to our Community.”Thanks to Chris, Reg and Aidan from Active Tameside and Councillor John Taylor.

Live theatre livesLive theatre livesHyde Festival Theatre originally opened its doors in May 1913. It’s first owner was Mr.T.Calverley, who opened it as a venue for variety shows and cinema house. Located on Corporation St, next to the larger Theatre Royal building, it had 500 seats on 2 levels and was originally called The Alexandra Pavilion. The seating was on 2 levels, with an upper circle level where the more expensive seats would be located. The balcony area is now home for the sound and lighting control desks.

In the mid 1930s the theatre was run by the Picture and Variety Limited company. The upstairs room, was the Alexandra Billiard Hall, making full use of the building. After a short period of closure, around 1950, it reopened as Hyde Festival Theatre in 1952, as a live entertainment venue. This may have been as a smaller alternative to the Theatre Royal, which gradually gravitated to becoming a cinema. The Festival Theatre has played host to a wide variety of theatre groups over the years, local and national, as well as singers and even gang shows by local Scouts.

The traditional pantomime is among the highlights of the calendar, with shows being put on by more than one group. The venue also boasts a bar, in the upstairs room, where drinks can

be enjoyed during the interval. Banners advertising shows can often be seen on town centre railings and on the front of the theatre itself. In recent years groups putting on shows have used social media to spread the word of upcoming productions and opportunities for those who fancy treading the boards.

The standard of productions is very high, often getting great reviews from theatre goers. Ticket prices are very reasonable for a good family night out. Book a show and support your local theatre. If we don’t use it, we lose it.

Meat raffle success>>The popular Meat Raffle at

Ladysmith Shopping Centre returned in January giving shoppers the opportunity to win fresh meat items from Briggs Butchers in Ashton Market Hall. Shoppers spending £5 or more in stores during Sundays in January received 5 free tickets to enter the raffle.

Established over 5 years ago by former centre manager Lyn Williams the raffle has proved a popular attraction every year for shoppers. Samantha Robinson, Assistant Centre Manager, said: “Once again, Ladysmith’s annual Meat Raffle has proved a huge hit and we are delighted at how well it has been received by our visitors.

“It is extremely encouraging to see that during both Sundays the Meat Raffle has been held, the number of visitors to the centre has been up in comparison to last year and we are hoping to be able to report a

similar result for the following weeks. “Not only does the Meat Raffle give people another reason to visit the Ladysmith and spend in our retailers, but it also gives us great pleasure to be able to support Briggs, a local independent butcher.”In January Ladysmith Shopping Centre also announced Willow Wood Hospice as their nominated charity of the year. The Hospice celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and will now be the beneficiary of fundraising events hosted by the centre throughout the year. The charity was successfully selected following an online selection on Facebook held late last year.

The witnessing of documentsThe High Court issues ruling

>>Mr Justice Pickering, sitting in the High Court, recently considered in the case of

Wood v Commercial First Business Ltd (In Liquidation) whether a deed was validly executed by an individual. The witness had signed it at some point after its execution, but not in the presence of the borrower, Wood. The case concerned the validity and enforceability of two commercial mortgages as challenged by the borrower on a number of grounds. These included whether one of the mortgage deeds had been validly executed in accordance with the provisions of the Law of Property (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1989.The Act provides that an instrument is validly executed as a deed by an individual if, and only if, it is signed by the individual in the presence of a witness who attests the signature. The borrower did not dispute that she had executed the mortgage deed in the presence of a witness. However, she contended that, to satisfy a section of the Act, both the person executing the deed and the witness must sign the deed

in each other’s presence. While the court accepted that the witness had not signed it in the borrower’s presence, it found that this did not invalidate the deed. The court held that, while it was necessary for the person executing the deed to sign in the presence of a witness, there was no additional need for the witness to sign in the presence of the executing party. Had this been required, the Act would have stated it explicitly. The case clarifies the duties of a witness when executing deeds. It confirms that, so long as the witness is present when the party entering into the deed signs it, the latter does not then need to be present when the witness signs the attestation clause. With this in mind, it will be interesting to see what the Law Commission decides in relation to the potential future use of video witnessing for electronic signatures on deeds, which is due to be considered.Despite the above, on a day-to-day basis

we at Bromleys have not noticed a trend towards the increased use of electronic signatures. The Land Registry is currently trialling the use of electronic execution clauses on certain mortgage deeds, and it is expected that this will eventually be rolled out on a larger scale. Please refer to our recent article on the Law Commission’s report on electronic signatures here for further information https://www.bromleys.co.uk/law-commission-confirms-validity-electronic-signatures/How can Bromleys Solicitors help? For assistance with any property law matters, please telephone 0161 330 6821 or alternatively, you are welcome to attend any of our free legal surgeries – no appointment necessary.

Tameside’s War MemorialsOne hundred years ago many were still feeling the aftermath of World War One and the general public wanted somewhere to commemorate those who had bravely given their lives for King and Country.

Local Committees were set up to organise the erection of war memorials and fundraising to carry it out. Arrangements had to be made for a suitable site for the memorial, and the names collected of those to be engraved. This all took time and while some memorials were unveiled in 1920 some were not complete until 1922 as in the case of Ashton, Broadbottom and Chapel Hill, Dukinfield.

The first war memorial to be unveiled was in Victoria Street, Hyde on 13th March 1920, closely followed by Globe Square on 20th March. Stalybridge has an unusual memorial that covers both sides of Trinity Bridge and lists 628 men that fell from 1914-1918.

Most memorials were built outside; however some were positioned in churches and Town Halls. There are even some Gardens of Remembrance.

St George’s Sunday School Rowing Club in Hyde was “a small

cenotaph with a spire.” It was built by club members, each contributing a stone for the base- there were 46 in all - as a personal tribute. A bottle containing the names and records of five members who died, and a full list of club members, was placed in a cavity within the monument. Unfortunately after much development in the area this memorial is no longer there.

The mediocrity of many of the designs that were being put forward in many parts of the country had been the cause of much apathy. After the Cenotaph in London was unveiled the public saw how the central theme of a war memorial could be beautiful.

There are fifty-two places in England where no one was killed in The Great War- Known as ‘thankful Villages’, and had no cause for a war memorial.

There are around thirty-five war memorials in Tameside, a list can be found on https://www.tameside.gov.uk/warmemorials Tameside Local Studies & Archive Centre has information on many, when they were unveiled, cost, designer etc.

Time to think of the spring, there’s lots to get ready, it’s time to assess winter losses and plan replacement plants, taking into account those that didn’t survive the freeze and choosing more robust species and cultivars.Check stored fruit and vegetables and remove any damaged or mouldy produce to avoid spoiling the rest. Seed potatoes are available now from most good garden centres. As always chit them (allow shoots to form) by placing them in a light, cool, frost-free place, I do that in used egg boxes. Moss will start growing on lawns before the grass, so now is the time to start killing it with ferrous sulphate, ready for a lovely green summer lawn. This is your chance to plant bare-rooted raspberries, though it can be done in March too. Prune the canes of summer-fruiting types to 10in after planting, and autumn-fruiting varieties down to ground level. Also, on the planting front Elaeagnus ‘Quicksilver’ is a good alternative to olives and is quite something to look at.Check outdoor containers are regularly watered, particularly those sheltered by house porches or eaves. Netting over brassicas may have been weakened by snow and need attention to deter those ravenous birds, remember to keep collecting those empty water bottles to put on top of your canes to help when you put the netting over them. There’s always time to clear leaves from around snowdrops so you can see their flowers emerging, while

moss will start growing on lawns before the grass, so now is the time to start killing it with ferrous sulphate, ready for a lovely green summer look. Now is also a great time to make or buy bird nesting boxes this month, putting them up on a fence, in a spot near bushes or trees, but out of range of cats! If you have one ventilate your glasshouse or conservatory on mild days to help prevent fungal problems, the extra moister caused by heating is not a great, but this simple exercise will help reduce the problem. In exposed gardens where you would like to build a new look, try lacy purple or yellow-leaved elderberry (Sambucus nigra) instead of Japanese maples. Plant shrubby lilac Syringa x laciniata or Erysimum ‘Bowles’s Mauve’ AGM instead of rosemary to get a very different style to the norm this year.Consider dormant shrubs and perennials to allow you to assess the need for structure, though trees with eye-catching bark, such as birches and maples, are beautiful all year. But if flowers are your passion, choose for a succession of seasonal colour, intermixing your planting so as one flower leaves another replaces it. Measuring and drawing the garden should clarify plans and help you remember what was planted where, try viewing the garden from inside the house and from different angles, then consider moving or replacing damaged, overgrown or badly placed shrubs. Don’t be afraid of change, after all nature is change.

Star awareness for Tameside Pulmonary

Fibrosis Support GroupTameside Pulmonary Fibrosis Support Group was set up in April 2018 for patients, their family, friends and carers, and anyone affected by Pul-monary Fibrosis/Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. We meet at Waterloo Meth-odist Church in Ashton on the first Wednesday of each month between 2pm and 4pm.PF/IPF is a little-known incur-able, life-limiting lung disease and we at TPFSG are trying to raise awareness by any means we can. One way is with our #aroundtheworldwithTPFSG fun challenge. Supporters take our poster on holiday or on their travels, and they have a photo taken with it and then send it to us by email or WhatsApp. The photos then get put onto Twitter, Facebook, and are printed and put into albums. We started it off in Stalybridge in February 2019 with a photo of Clive next to the statue of Jack Judge, who wrote the song `It’s a Long Way to Tipperary.` We thought it would be good to get a photo from Tipperary too, because of course it is a long way away. But then we thought, why stop there, let’s

see where else we can get photos from, and let’s make our ultimate goal a bit more challenging. So, we started to put the word out and since last February we have received over 600 photos from friends, family, ex-colleagues, strangers and some well-known faces. Tameside Radio`s very own Scott Bruton, Radio Manchester`s Jimmy Wagg and Eamonn O`Neal, former Formula 1 Racing Driver Jenson Button, and Great Britain’s best Olympian ever, Sir Chris Hoy, have all posed with our poster. You may now be asking, what is our ultimate goal? Its a photo on the International Space Station of course! So, as they say, Watch this Space! If you or anyone you know would like more information about the group, or would like to join in with the challenge, please contact Clive and Sue Green on 07533 802 620 or email [email protected]

Having a pet is a great responsibility and is covered by many laws to ensure the health and welfare of the animal. Here’s a few things to be aware of...

More than 86% of UK dog owners have already micro-chipped their pets. But micro-chipping dogs is compulsory in the UK. Any dog over the age of eight weeks must be micro-chipped and registered on a national database. If a local authority finds a dog without a microchip, it can order the owner to microchip their dog within 21 days or face a fine of £500.Pet ownership often starts with buying your pet, and by law you must be at least 16 years old to buy an animal. Adults are legally responsible for the welfare of their children’s pets. When you buy a pet from a shop, the law protects you as a consumer. That means that if your pet gets sick or dies shortly after you buy it, the pet shop may give you a refund or replace your pet.The Animal Welfare Act states that owners must take all reasonable steps to:• meet their pets’ needs• give them enough food

and water• house them properly,

and• protect them from pain,

suffering, injury and disease

People who don’t look after their animals can be banned from owning them, fined up to £20,000, or even be sent to prison.

Trips to the vets are part and parcel of owning a pet, and the law protects you and your animals while you’re there. If the treatment a vet gives doesn’t meet a reasonable standard of care and injures your pet, you can complain or take legal action. You should get legal advice early on. Citizens Advice can help.Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 Your dog must not worry (chase or attack) livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses and poultry) on agricultural land, so keep your dog on a lead around livestock. Animals Act 1971 - You could be liable for damage caused by your dog under thisAct or under some degree of negligence. It is highly advisable to have third party liability insurance to cover this, something that is included in most pet and some household insurance policies.

ON THE DRIVER’S SIDEMotoring tips from Guide Bridge MOT & Service

No oil in your vehicle will certainly affect the performance along with worn brakes and these are two elements of car maintenance that should never be ignored, but do you ever consider the condition of your tyres?

A customer came into our workshop yesterday with tyres on his vehicle. The question was asked, in the mechanics’ own words, ‘Goodness gracious why are you running on slicks’! For those who don’t know ‘slicks’ are racing tyres that have no tread.

Not only are you putting yourself and other road users in danger on the roads, you are also risking the balance on your bank account.

Any driver caught with a tyre depth below the legal limit of 1.6mm across three quarters of the tyre faces a fine of £2,500 and three penalty points for each tyre on the vehicle, so, in essence you could be banned from driving and face a £10,000 fine. It’s the driver behind the wheel NOT the owner or registered keeper of the vehicle that will receive the fine from those boys in blue. In reality it may not just be the fine for the bald tyres you are paying for. Last year in the UK alone over 1200 people were injured in car crashes caused by illegal and defective tyres, so you could face even more financial stress.

We urge our customers to change their tyres at a safe 3mm tread to preserve the handling and steering, and more importantly, the stopping of the car! The stopping distance of a car with bald tyres increases by 40% at 50mph in dry conditions. This is equivalent to eight car lengths and on wet roads this increases again.

The weather in our part of the country is notoriously wet as we know. When it rains the grooves in a tyre help to channel the water away so that the tyre can keep contact with the road and helps to prevent aquaplaning, but when the tread is too low the risk increases and this could result in anything from difficulty stopping to a complete loss of vehicle control.

Many motorists will continue to wait for the MOT tester to point out the badly worn tyres at the time of test, which we find hard to take in. However, for those drivers who would like peace of mind, we are more than willing to give your ‘four corners’ a quick look over and make sure you and your family are safe out there on our roads.

Walking & cycling initiative>>Tameside is set

to benefit from a transformational series of walking and cycling network improvements. The Mayor’s Challenge Fund (MCF) has given approval in principle to Tameside Council’s request for 12 schemes with an ask of £14 million, which will now be developed further and consulted on where appropriate.

They include new and extended cycle lanes, new crossings and junction alterations to make travelling around Tameside safer and more attractive.

The schemes aim to make walking and cycling an easier and safer option, giving people the chance to change the way they travel.

Walking and cycling is not only better for health but also reduces congestion and improves air quality.

However, 30% of trips under 1km in Greater Manchester are made by car, the equivalent of 15 minutes walking or four minutes cycling.

In Tameside it’s estimated that we spend £26 million per annum in avoidable costs to the health system due to treating people for illnesses that could have been prevented if people were more physically active.

The schemes are expected to cost in the region of £14 million, with £11 million approved in principle from the MCF and £3 million to be identified from other match funding sources.

Tameside Council Executive Leader Councillor Brenda Warrington said: “We’re delighted to have been given the green light to progress these schemes, which will make

cycling and walking around Tameside easier and safer.

“Ditching the car to cycle or walk short journeys not only helps the environment but is healthier and saves the NHS money, so let’s make walking and cycling the first choice.”

Greater Manchester Cycling and Walking Commissioner, Olympic gold medallist Chris Boardman, said: “More people travelling on foot or by bike is a by-product of creating better places to live, work and socialise. Tameside has put together some strong plans that will be well used by thousands of residents each year and we are working closely with the council to make them a reality.”

The MCF supports The Bee Network, which is a proposal for the UK’s largest joined up cycling and walking network, to make cycling and walking the natural choice for shorter journeys across the whole of Greater Manchester.

So far, £160 million has been made available to deliver schemes across Greater Manchester. The aim is to tackle common problems that are being felt right across Britain: an obesity epidemic, air quality issues and streets that are often clogged with motor traffic during peak hours.

Consultation is being planned very soon, which will focus not only on developing the schemes in line with public feedback, but also on helping residents gain the skills to cycle confidently and safely, with information to be provided about cycling projects across the borough.

Keep Tameside tidy>>Tameside residents

are being urged to pick up a piece of litter every day to make a difference together in 2020.

Tameside Council is launching a simple pledge that everyone can commit to – as well as asking people not to drop litter in the first place.

The pledge states: “I’m picking up one piece of litter every day! Please join me in this pledge. Let’s make a difference together in 2020.”

If everyone picked up just one piece of litter, then it would make a huge difference to maintaining the borough and protecting the environment.

The scheme aims to develop community pride and involve the whole community in helping to keep Tameside tidy, clean and litter-free.

The pledge went live on Tuesday, January 14, with everyone encouraged to get involved by taking

a selfie of themselves holding up a copy of the pledge or of them picking up a piece of litter and posting it on social media with the hashtag #Tamesidelitterpledge. A Facebook page called The Litter Community (TLC) Hyde has also been created at www.facebook.com/TLCHyde for people to post their pledge photos on. The campaign includes the message: “Let’s pick up the past – so we can protect the future

It follows the launch of the Litter Hubs Network where residents or groups can book out free equipment, including high vis jackets, litter pickers, gloves and black bags, from community places to carry out clean-ups. Council officers then arrange for the rubbish to be disposed of appropriately.

Tameside charity’s campaign providing winter warmth

>>A Tameside charity has been offering residents going through fuel poverty

support and advice thanks to funding they’ve received

Citizens Advice Tameside are able to offer additional services for their clients who are struggling to keep warm during the winter months.

The local charity was able to provide this service thanks to winter funding which has been allocated by Tameside Council’s Adult Service team.

This funding was made available from central government and has all now been shared with voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise organisations in the borough to provide community-based support for those in need.

Nigel Morgan, manager of Citizens Advice Tameside, said: “This project has been a godsend in allowing us to expand our services in a way that helps vulnerable residents across the borough.

“Every year at the start of winter we see that fuel debts affect a large number of our clients, there is always a noticeable peak at this time where we see individuals experiencing fuel poverty.”

Advisers at the charity found that fuel poverty issues can force their clients to choose between whether to feed their families or warm their homes. Rationing energy use and living in a cold, damp home is also dangerous

to health and is a contributing factor in conditions like respiratory disease, heart disease and circulatory disease. It also contributes towards increased winter deaths, repeat visits to GPs and admissions to hospitals.

Statistics show that 20%* of parents living in fuel poverty regularly go without food so that their children can eat.

The effect of fuel poverty can cause disabled and elderly individuals to go into debt, which has a serious effect on their mental and physical wellbeing.

Citizens Advice clients have been advised they can save an average of £200 a year by switching energy tariffs or suppliers. Information has also been provided about insulation measures and grants which are available to residents.

In Tameside approximately 12%** of households will go through fuel poverty in 2018.

Cllr Eleanor Wills, Tameside Council Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Population Health, said: “This fantastic initiative is one of many across the borough helping to support vulnerable individuals. Thanks to the work of Citizens Advice, those in fuel poverty are receiving support if they’re facing the choice between spending what they need to heat their homes or getting into debt.”

To find out more about this scheme and to speak with an advisor please contact Tameside Citizens Advice on 0300 330 9076 or call into the Tameside One service centre between 9:30 and 12:30 from Monday to Friday.

A new community radioAt the end of August last year another local radio service took to the airwaves when My Tameside went live from the base in Ashton town centre. Located on George Street at The Anthony Seddon Fund, and to find out more we spoke with My Tameside’s Directors John Mercer and James Dean to give us the lowdown on this new station.“We are both passionate about radio and we worked for another radio organisation but when that changed direction we wanted to focus purely on the community aspects and the groups no longer getting coverage which prompted the creation of My Tameside. It’s a very eclectic style of radio focussing on hyper local stories and information so following a bit of research and the costs involved we thought it was doable and we launched last year.”How can people tune in?“You can find us online at mytameside.co.uk, also on the Alexa service by asking

to enable My Tameside or launch My Tameside. We are on iTunes and also looking to add the service on the Android platform soon as well.”What’s your music content?“Anything from the 50’s to now, we have specialist shows focussing on the 70’s,

High School Hits, Easy Listening along with upbeat in the mornings and classic

drive time style content. We both do shows every day, Joshua Littlehales ex tv and radio presenter anchors our afternoon show Light Lunch With Littlehales, people will be familiar with Steve Crumley on Breakfast, Paul Harvey, Holly Riley and Ian Leonard.”You also have regular contributions from organisations like Willow Wood Hospice?“Yes we have lots of different contributors like be well Tameside, the Anthony Seddon

Fund, Love Of Lacey and a lot of local charities that get information out about local events happening.”Do you welcome people to volunteer or to come and see you?“Yes, appointments are recommended because we are very busy and often in and out of the studio but they can get in touch by emailing [email protected]

Thank you John and James for speaking with About Tameside.

All the other months

in the Julian calendar

have 30 or 31 days, but

February lost out to the

ego of Roman Emperor

Caesar Augustus. Under

his predecessor Julius

Caesar, February had 30

days and the month named

after him - July - had 31.

August had only 29 days.

When Caesar Augustus

became Emperor, he added

two days to ‘his’ month to

make August the same

as July. So, February

lost out to August in the

battle of the extra days.

Fun Facts About Leap YearsThis year we celebrate a Leap Year

when February gains an extra day so

here’s a few fun facts for you.

The frog is a symbol associated with February 29. The Australian rocket frog can leap over two metres.

Leap days are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the Sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242189 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds – to circle once around the Sun. This is called a tropical year. Without an extra day on February 29 nearly every four years, we would lose almost six hours every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days.

Leap years in history: During leap

years, George Armstrong Custer

fought the Battle of the Little

Bighorn (1876), the Titanic sank

(1912), Benjamin Franklin proved

that lightning is electricity

(1752) and gold was discovered in

California (1848).

People born on February 29 are called “leaplings” or “leapers”. The odds of being born on a leap day are 1 in 1500.

How did the bird break into the house? With a crowbar.

Why can’t dogs work the DVD remote? Because they always hit the Paws button!

Why was Cinderella no good at football? Because her coach was a pumpkin.

What does the dentist of the year get? A little plaque.

Ted’s Jokes!

Queen Margaret of Scotland was apparently five years old when she came up with the notorious February 29 proposal idea for a leap year in 1288. If a man did refuse the proposal, he would be fined a kiss, a silk dress or twelve pairs of gloves. Women either have to wear breeches or a scarlet petticoat to pop the question, according to tradition.
