  • 1LOCATIONLOCATION

  • PREFACEProSympos has carried out sur-

    gery courses throughout

Germany for more than 15 years.

In recent years, we have been

proud to welcome far more than

    10,000 national and international

guests at our former site in

    Muelheim /Ruhr (*).

    However, space requirements and

    transport connection needs for

    the course location also increased

    along with the growing number

    of courses and participants. After

a long planning phase, we have

now created a new and extraor-

    dinary further training location at

one of the most sought-after in-

    dustrial heritage sites in Germany.

In a historic industrial hall in the

    grounds of the former Zollverein

    Coal Mine Industrial Complex

in Essen, we bring together the

    charm of historical heritage and

    modern surgery training oppor-

    tunities.

  • UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE

Large parts of the Zollverein Coal

    Mine Industrial Complex have

been part of the UNESCO world

heritage site since 2001 (see also

    http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/975).

The historic grounds of the coal

    mine industrial complex of

    ZukunftsZentrumZollverein

(Triple Z) are located in the

    immediate vicinity of the world

    heritage site and comprise ten

    listed industrial buildings with a

    floor space of 35,000 m2.

    The G9 building previously

    housed the joinery workshop

    and the maintenance workshop

    for the Zollverein site. Today,

    modern anatomical and medical

    further training (at the highest

    possible level) is offered inside

    these venerable halls.

    POSSIBILITIES

    13

  • In the past, the administration of

    here the miners were handed

    their pay envelopes. The miners

would stand in the payroll hall

and their pay was issued over

    several counters.

For the (at times) up to 3,000

    miners working at Zollverein

    4 / 5 / 11, the huge washing hall

    formed the central changing

    and washing facility. High up

in the hall, you can still see the

old hooks on which the miners

    would hang their working clothes

after the end of their shift.

Today, one part of this hall is the

    second-biggest conference room

    at our disposal.

    With various seat arrangements,

    the “Washing hall” conferen-

    ce room with its microphone

lectures for a larger audience or

as a plenary location for work-

shops. There is room for up to

    150 people here.
