International Summer Academy onSpatial Ecotoxicology and
Ecotoxicological Risk Assessment -Using an Open Community Approach
9. - 22. September 201 3
Campus Landau/Pfalz, Germany
Spatial Ecotoxicology
An increasing number of chemical substances arebeing released into our environment. Particularlyaffected are developing countries with highcontamination but often inadequate controlmechanisms and insufficient resources for riskassessment.Spatial analysis offers more and more applicationsand potential within ecological risk assessment. The growing Open Community Approach makesthis technology available for everybody.Experts of various discipl ines from national andinternational institutions wil l combine basicconcepts of ecotoxicology with methods ofgeographic information system analysis. This wil lbe i l lustrated with practical examples, both in thefield and at the computer.
Course Objective
The 'International Summer Academy on SpatialEcotoxicology and Ecotoxicological RiskAssessment - Using an Open CommunityApproach' gives an overview on ecotoxicologicalrisk assessment with a focus on the use of freelyavailable methods and resources of remotesensing and spatial analysis using GIS. TheCourse wants to provide young scientists withinexpensive tools and programmes that areoriented for use both in developing and developedcountries.
Social programme
In addition to the academic courses, a socialprogramme combines history, culture and natureof the Palatinate and Germany and offersexcursions to different nature protection areas,Heidelberg, historic towns and castles as well asvarious evening events.
Besides, participants can visit the various localactivities such as cinema, theatre, museums, andtraditional wine and fal l festivals in the surroundingcommunities at their own expense.
Course Programme
The course programme is based on the Europeanand U.S. Framework for Ecological RiskAssessment and contains the fol lowing ten modules:1 . Problem formulation2. Hazard assessment of chemical stressors3. Characterisation of effects on One Health4. Pesticide pollution and vulnerabil ity concepts5. Earth-to-space-based observing systems for
environmental risk assessment6. Use of free Open Source spatial analysis tool7. Creation of global pesticide application maps8. Open community approach in One Health risk
mapping9. Risk assessment and data availabi l ity in a
developing country, El Salvador1 0. Assessing risk exposure to natural hazards in
Central America applying CARA-GIS
Experts come from different national and interna-tional discipl ines and institutions such as:▪ Institutes for Environmental Sciences and of
Mathematics, University Koblenz-Landau▪ Institute for Environment and Human Security,
