DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT :
AC-AC DEMU POWER DISTRIBUTION
Diesel Engine is the main source of power. It is a turbo
powered 4 stroke, 12 cylinders, and 1600 HP engine.
Traction Alternator converts rotary motion into
electrical power. It is coupled directly to Engine.
6 Pole, 3 phase, Star connected bush-less alternator.
Rectifier unit is mounted on the alternator. Cooling air
passes through rectifier and then to alternator.
3 phase, full wave bridge rectifier.
Rectified Output (DCLV) connected to Traction
Control Cubicles TCC1 and TCC2 via DCLIS & DC
link Switches
TCC has got three phase modules to generate 3 phase
AC. The on-board computer generates VVVF output.
Each TCC power up two traction motors. The traction
motors are 3 phase induction motors.
When DPC is set to motoring, VCC (vehicle control
computer) energises DCLS1 and DCLS2.
VCC Sends PWM signal to exciter field.
When exciter field gets modulated supply, alternator
generates 3 phase AC and is rectified by the rectifier.
Both TCC draw current through DCLS1, DCLS2 &
generate 3 phase variable voltage & variable frequency.
TCC output (variable voltage & frequency) is
connected to TMs (3 phase induction motors).
When driver changes notch to move DPC:
TCC decides the frequency and then voltage required for
the new torque.
Accordingly TCC adjusts the switching sequence &
timings of the IGBTs
The Generated 3 phase AC voltage is applied to traction
motors
TCC computes torque developed by Traction motors and
sends this value as a torque feedback
VCC compares this with Torque required and send new
torque requirement to TCC
The cycle repeats till torque required = torque feed back
Brake Chopper is a protecting device.
It shorts the DCLV whenever its voltage is more than
set limit.
APC (aux power control) takes supply from DC Link
and it generates: 415 V AC and 110 V DC
Power transmission in conventional DEMU is AC-DC-
DC.
o Engine + Alternator + Rectifier + DC TMs.
Power transmission in the new DEMU is AC-DC-AC.
o Engine + Alternator + Rectifier + Traction Converter +
AC Traction Motors.

Low impact exercise for elders’ back pain :
Many senior citizens have a made up thought that pain is
just a natural part of aging and it is not a curable one.
This belief is not 100% correct. Only a few back
problems need some medical management. Most of the
back pains are recoverable well through prompt
progressive back exercises at home itself by adopting a
few lifestyle modifications.
Back care exercises for elders are as follows:
Preparatory exercises:
This initial phase is meant for warm up and prepares the
soft tissue structures for core exercises.
Pain relieving cum stretching exercises :
Naturally, muscle shortens along with aging progress and
keeps unused. Stretching exercises are very essential to
lengthen the core muscles. Consistently doing these
exercises will help to maintain the range of movement
and maintain flexibility of the spine and aid in pain relief.
Strengthening /Spinal stabilisation exercises:
These exercises not only strengthen the muscles
surrounding the spine but also strengthen the abdominal
muscles and hip muscles to reduce the pain level
gradually.
Relaxations exercise:
Though it is a last one, relaxation practice has got much
importance. It not only relaxes the tensed muscles but
also relaxes the mind. Hence if necessary, it should be
performed whenever the body feels tired.
Note: If the pain is acute, stick to bed rest for a brief
period, provide immediate pain relieving physiotherapy
and then do the exercises. Therapeutic exercises are
individualized. It should be tailored based on causes cum
other factors. Hence get prior prescription from the back
care experts and get prompt guidelines from a therapist.
Other common precautions are:
Do the exercises in the prescribed dose.
Gradually increase the repetitions.
Number of repetitions should be equal on both sides.
Don’t do in a bouncing way.
Stop exercise if you feel any tingling /discomfort while
doing exercise.
Know to find the difference between the stretching
discomfort and pain.
Breathing notes: Synchronization of movement with
breathing is well for more therapeutic benefits.
Invest some time to learn the exercise/periodical review
from a competent physiotherapist.
Keep ever in mind “Exercises are also medicine”.
Okay! Here are the common exercise programmes for
elders with back pain due to common degenerative cause.
