A monthly publication dedicated to the rescue, evaluation and placement of Airedale Terriers who have lost their homes.
Airedale Terrier Rescue and Adoptionwww.aire-rescue.com 1
By Paula Lackner
We have several Airedales that have been in rescue for awhile who are looking for their BFF (Best Friend Forever). Just like many of your human friends, some of these Airedales have personalities that do not necessarily fit in with everyone in the neighborhood. Some have physical limitations, while others feel young at heart but their bodies tell them otherwise. We all know a few people just like that but that we would not leave them out in the cold, would we?
Take a gander at these fine Airedales and open up your heart and home to help them.
For more information please visit www.aire-rescue.com.
Bonnie and Clyde Need a foster home. Bonnie is going through heart worm treatment and needs a place where she can rest. Clyde is deaf and is starving for affection and direction. Contact Pam Malancuk ([email protected]) if you can help.

President’s LetterHello Airedale Lovers,
Summer has officially begun and I hope you are enjoying some outdoor activities with your favorite fur friend or two. On Wednesday evenings, I attend obedience class with one of my foster Airedales. If the weather is decent, we have the class outside which adds a new dimension of distractions. It is a great training tool as it better represents everyday life and you are able to deal with those issues with a trainer helping you.
This past month, one of our long time volunteers announced her resignation from the Board of Directors as well as a State Coordinator due to serious health issues. Terry Kratchman received word from her health professional that she has lung cancer. Terry has passed the reins of coordinator over to a good friend and Airedale lover Pam Malancuk. I have known Terry for nearly eighteen years and can only imagine how difficult it was for her to step down as her devotion to Airedales has spanned nearly two decades. Her goal is to make it to the Fall Aire Frolic to see all of her fellow Airedale lovers and Airedales. Please keep Terry in your thoughts and prayers and send good zen her way.
Won’t you join us at the Fall Aire Frolic this year? Come and see why this celebration of Airedales has lasted twelve years. Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 14, 2013.
Follow your passion and make a difference in a ‘dales life —get involved.

Are you looking for your very own BFF? (Best Fur Friend)
Leo Needs a buddy his size or larger. No small animals. With the help of his foster family he now has less anxiety and even enjoys his crate. He loves to be Velcro boy! Please contact Barb Oimas ([email protected]) for more information.
Fritz What is not to love about Fritzy? Do you like the feel of carpet under your feet? Well so does he! Do you love your ranch home with no stairs? Well so does he! Give the poor guy a leg up on life. Please contact Pam Malancuk ([email protected]) for more information.
Daisy This young at heart gal needs to live like one of the golden girls. Just think you don’t have to worry about running a marathon, monitoring her every move and she’ll even share your toast in the morning if you like. Please contact Priscilla Lundblad ([email protected]) for more information.
Duke Hey, here’s a walking partner for you who doesn’t take your arm out of your socket from pulling. An Airedale who actually acknowledges you when you call him-mind blowing! Please contact Priscilla Lundblad ([email protected]) for more information.
OliverThis guy loves kids. He wants them to be a part of his life. What he doesn’t want as a part of his life are thunderstorms. He is just an adorable boy who smiles when he is happy. Please contact Pat McCauley ([email protected]) for more information.
ATRA is also in need of foster homes for several of our Airedales. What a great way to get to know a ‘dale and help them out at the same time. They are much better off in a home environment than in a kennel. Several of our Airedales need to be your one and only. A kennel is not the environment for a dog who prefers the company of humans over other fur people. Let’s make this a summer to remember and get all of these ‘dales in their forever homes!
Please see our website for additional information on each one of these Airedale gems.

SP’AIREDALES LOOKING FOR HOMES
AxelBirth Date: August, 2009 Age: 3 years, 10 months Sex: Male Weight: 91 pounds State: Wisconsin Contact: Paula Lackner, 715-584-5961 Email: Airedale@ frontiernet.net
It’s summertime and Axel says “Let’s play ball!” That is one of his favorite things to do with balls of all sizes. It’s a good thing he likes to play, go for long walks and attend obedience class because he needs the activity. He came into rescue weighing 95 pounds and he is now at 91. The poor guy is on a diet but he is doing well and his goal weight is about 75 to 80 pounds. Axel is going for a 3 mile walk in the morning and then goes to doggie daycare during the day so he doesn’t get bored.
He loves going for car rides and is a good traveler. He also enjoys attending obedience class and is quite good at sit stay, down and walking on lead.
One thing he doesn’t like is going to the vet. He needs to be muzzled as he does not like to be restrained. He also does not like having his nails done but is good about the grooming and bathing. Axel does not respond well to physical correction or force. He needs someone who will be consistent with positive training and give him a routine he can follow. He has flourished in the last two months with the change in his life.
He loves attention from adult humans but is not good around little kids. He likes to play with other dogs and did very well at a venue with over 2000 dogs in attendance.
His ideal home would be with adults, a large fenced in yard, another dog to play with (he loved the female Airedales at a recent venue), someone who will continue with his obedience training, walking him daily and to help him with his diet.
Izzy Rose (picture not available)
Birth Date: February 29, 2011 Age: 2 years, 4 months Sex: Female Weight: 61 pounds State: Arkansas Contact: Paula Lackner, 715-584-5961 Email: [email protected]
Izzy Rose is a wonderful 2 ½ year old girl who loves her people and gets along well with all of her big four legged foster sisters and brother. Izzy has an extremely high prey drive and will not be able to live with or be around dogs who are smaller than she is (nor will she be able to live with cats).
She is a smart girl who loves to play – she particularly loves squeaky toys and tennis balls. Izzy is a playful, loyal girl, loves to ride in the car. She will need a home that will provide boundaries in a loving, firm way and that will continue to help her build her confidence in new situations. She is crate trained, knows her basic obedience commands and is an all around cuddly girl. She has been spayed and is up to date on her shots and ready for a home where she can be the recipient of all the love and affection you have to give.
5Airedale Terrier Rescue and Adoption
CharliBirth Date: November 26, 2009 Age: 3 years, 7 months Sex: Male Weight: 74 pounds State: Ontario Contact: Barbara Durance, 416-259-1429 Email: [email protected]
Charli is a big, lovable boy with a “big, bad bark”. So big that it often scares people into believing he is a rough Airedale, when in fact it takes very little to settle him down. Being such a big boy he has learned that he can intimidate children so it is suggested that the adopting family have older Airedale experienced children/teenagers. If allowed Charli will bark at people, other animals and vehicles going past his house. He has learned that he is to sit away from the door when company comes, and this needs to continue to be reinforced. Charli knows and obeys both English and French commands and understands hand signals.
Charli is a large Airedale who could lose a couple pounds and needs his exercise. He needs to have someone ready to work on his walking manners as he is a major puller. He is so happy about going for a walk that he tends to pull for the first ten minutes but with work he settles into a good long walk. He is used to a large fenced yard and enjoys running and playing fetch. He likes to know what is happening in his environment and does well at the vets and groomers.
Charli gets along with the other Airedale in his foster home and has been left alone in the house without incidence. He is not the Alpha dog and is happy to sit back and let the other Dale take the lead. He enjoys his food and is a good eater. Due to skin issues when he came into rescue, Charli is not given wheat or grain except rice. He is currently eating a salmon based food which contains omega 6 fatty acid and taking 2 melatonin tablets daily. These changes have helped clear up his skin issues.
Charli is a very strong boy, but also a big softy. He needs a lot of love and attention. Even with his faults his foster family say he is a wonderful boy.
To find out more about adopting Charli please contact Barbara Durance at [email protected]
JACKBirth Date: August, 2005 Age: 7 years, 8 months Sex: Male Weight: 74 pounds State: Colorado Contact: Priscilla Lundblad, 303-910-1403 Email: priscillalundblad1@ comcast.net
Jack is a great dog and an easy keeper. He came from a home where he was loved a lot and received good care. However, they had an invisible fence and that did not work well for him. He needs a home with a ‘real’ fenced yard where he can feel safe and not threatened by other dogs. He has plenty of energy and likes to play but is also happy just hanging out with those he loves. He would do best in a home with adults or older children and probably would be happiest as an only dog. He enjoys going for walks but does not like dogs who are running free approaching him. He is obedient and knows all of the basic commands. He is anxious to please and most of all he is extremely loyal to those who love him. He is lonely without his family and is looking for a forever home. If you think you might have the perfect home for Jack; please contact us. He is anxiously waiting for you!

SP’AIREDALES LOOKING FOR HOMES
KenzieBirth Date: March, 2008 Age: 5 years, 3 months Sex: Female Weight: 50 pounds State: Wisconsin Contact: Paula Lackner, 715-584-5961 Email: [email protected]
Kenzie the cutie came to ATRA through a volunteer who discovered her at a shelter. At the time she was in desperate need of a haircut so she really didn’t look much like an Airedale. A transformation happened when all the long shaggy hair was removed and a beautiful Airedale emerged. Kenzie is a perfect young lady on the grooming table even when getting her nails trimmed. After her grooming she pranced and acted like a show dog.
Kenzie spent her first years on the end of chain living outside. She had ended up in her home because they found her as a stray on their property. It is obvious she had several litters of pups but is now spayed so no more motherhood for her. Going from living outside to inside has presented some changes but she has been adapting very well. She likes having a toy box filled with toys. She loves to take out each one and leave them everywhere. Sometimes she tries to pull out the stuffing but when told no she stops. She is now crate trained and house trained. Kenzie has also adapted to indoor noises.
Some of things Kenzie enjoys are car rides, walks, to dig in the yard, eat her food and mostly craves affection from humans. She loves people and aims to please. She attends obedience class and is learning her basic commands. She does not like the other dogs in class but she is manageable as long as none of them invade her bubble. She is food aggressive with other dogs and therefore cannot live with another dog.
Her health is good though she could put on about 4 to 5 pounds. She has been treated for Lyme disease, is up to date on her vaccinations and spayed. She will need a fenced in yard (not electronic) as she has a high prey drive and does not like cats. If you are an approved home with no other dogs, please contact me about Kenzie.
7Airedale Terrier Rescue and Adoption
TuckerBirth Date: January, 2010 Age: 3 years, 5 months Sex: Male Weight: 57 pounds State: Michigan Contact: Barb Oimas, 989-837-5855 Email: [email protected]
Tucker has come back into Rescue because he and another male were trying to decide who was the new pack leader when the older female dog in the house crossed the bridge. Tucker being younger was more pushy and caused the family to be concerned for the older male they had adopted years before. Tucker was thought to be aggressive, and he is not. Tucker is shy and fearful. It takes him a while to adjust to new places and people. He needs to be in a home with no other dogs, or one that has a stable dog, female is best. He is respectful of more dominant males but more comfortable with females. He is friendly with people but timid. He is housebroken and crate trained and likes to play.
His house manners are good, except for wanting to counter-surf (of course!). He has not been destructive. He enjoys walks, and he rides in the car well. He will need someone dog experienced and patient, someone who will continue socializing and training him.
LadyA very sweet girl has come back into rescue.
Birth Date: June 27, 2006 Age: 7 years Sex: Female Weight: 71 pounds State: Iowa Contact: June Haas Email: [email protected]
This 7 year old girl is house trained, gets along with dogs, cats and doesn’t even flinch when walking on lead and a squirrel walks in her path. She loves car rides - even to the vet’s office who also commented on what a sweet, laid back girl she is. However, given the opportunity she will counter surf, eat from the garbage or taste test the cat’s food.
Lady will become very close to one of the household members, most likely the one who lets her sit right next to them on the couch, that cannot contain themselves from loving her up.
Lady is a timid around children, and when she gets nervous she will stand behind the person she trusts.
She does get scared during thunderstorms, fireworks or sudden loud noises so it is important that her new family create an environment that is dark and quiet that she can retreat to if she is home alone or allow her to sit on your lap while you talk her through it.
Lady’s perfect home would be an Airedale experienced individual or family with someone home most of the time.

IOWAThe frontlines in Iowa have been pretty quiet for the most part.
Recently we took in a sweet girl who is familiar to ATRA and I want to thank Vicki & Ron Brinkley for taking this girl under their wing while we assess her needs and find the home that will be perfect for her.
Thank you to Gini & Steve Williams for accepting the Volunteer Spotlight writing position in the monthly Aire Mail newsletter.
Summer is here and so far so good, not too hot and not too humid for any of our four legged friends. Even with a moderate summer please always remember not to leave anyone behind in the car, keep them hydrated, walk with your Airedale Terrier during cooler hours, avoid crowded events with your Airedale Terrier . Heat, noise, crowds, and general excitement can be physically and emotionally taxing for your Airedale Terrier - causing a great deal of anxiety and stress. Of course, make sure your Airedale Terrier ’s tags have the most current contact information even though they are microchipped.
Lastly, thank you to all of the ATRA volunteers!
June R. Haas ATRA Iowa Coordinator
MICHIGANMichigan would like to give a big thank you to our wonderful foster homes.
Susi & Andy Harter of Chase’s Corner Kennel, Vicki Kudla of Superior K-9, and Carol & Glen Domeracki, we really appreciate all of your time, love and help with these Dales till they find their forever homes.
Thank you to Susi Harter for doing our home visits this month. Susi has been a wonderful help with all the dogs that we have on the west side of the state. Since Peggy has stepped down, Susi has stepped up and filled the gap. If you are interested in helping with applications, home visits, or as needed, please drop me a line. I need someone to help fill in now that Peggy has moved to New York. Thank you to all our great Michigan volunteers, whether you are named in the newsletter or behind the scenes you are very much appreciated. You’re the best!

9Airedale Terrier Rescue and Adoption
WISCONSINWe have kicked it into high gear for the planning of the twelfth annual Fall Aire Frolic! There are lots of things to do so if you are interested in helping, please drop a line to any of the people involved (see article in this issue) about the event. They would love to hear from you. Among all the planning for this yearly event is the daily work in rescue for our Airedales.
A big thank you goes out to Kris Anderson-Hereth and Jill Springborn for notifying me of an Airedale in need in the Vernon County Humane Society. An Airedale experienced home came with their dog and it was love at first sight.
Several of us hosted a booth for ATRA at the annual Mounds DogFest in Sun Prairie Wisconsin. Mary Mallek set up the volunteer schedule for the day’s activities. Mary Mallek and her pal Fuzzy, Jackie VonBehren, Mary Jo Koranda with Zelda and LuLu, Jill Springborn with her girl Curly, Jani Egan, Karen Dallmann and Allen Hoffman with Dolly, Nancy Raufman and Gerald with Bella, and myself with Axel, all helped during the day talking with people about Airedales. We had visits from Bob McArthur and Kathy Williamson. There were over 7,100 people at the event and over 2,000 dogs! The rain held off all day which we were happy about. Curly and Axel never moved a muscle for the two and half hour car ride home! Thanks everyone for helping and especially to Mounds who never charges rescue groups for booth space.
A special thanks to Chris Olson for helping with three fosters in Wisconsin. Chris allows me to come before work and drop off one of my fosters and pick another one up after work for the night. She also lets me change off every week with a different dog in obedience class and does not charge ATRA to attend the class with a foster. Axel and Kenzie have their bios in this newsletter. New girl Shortcake is learning the ropes and I am learning about her personality.
We send our sympathies to Lyn Miller who lost her dear boy Dublin to bone cancer. We are all so sorry to have him leave you so soon Lyn.
Paula Lackner ATRA Wisconsin Coordinator
ILLINOIS & INDIANAOn a sad note, one of our Illinois volunteers, Tzantera Bach-Dalton, was killed in a car crash in late May. Her daughter reluctantly was forced to surrender her two Airedales, Anna and Zamian to ATRA. Tzantera had fostered, transported, performed home visits, and assisted in surrenders. A huge thank you to Bobbi and Joe Youngblood from Michigan for stepping up with almost no notice to help transport these two senior special needs ‘Dales to their new home with Kathy Brockway. Kathy recently lost two of her own Airedales and opened up her heart and home to these two seniors. Zamian is blind and it takes a special person to take on that responsibility. Kathy, however, was more than up to the challenge since one of her previous dogs, Stevie Wonder, was also blind. Another thank you is in order to Peggy Flyte and Susi Harter for taking their grooming magic to Kathy’s home and turning Anna and Zamian into gorgeous Airedales once again.
A big thank you is in order to Kelly Imbody for helping out with a home visit in Valparaiso, IN.

COLORADOMany thanks to Amy Waters for her tremendous help this past month. She stayed busy making arrangements and driving to Fort Collins to pick up Airedale Billy, who came into rescue while I was out of state as well as picking up Airedale Mina, who was surrendered to ATRA. Amy also did a couple of home visits and is fostering Felicia. A special thank you to Tami Cassel for fostering Jack and to Mona Muella for fostering Duke and Daisy. Both foster homes are being most patient as we search to find the perfect forever homes for all 3 dogs. It’s been another busy month here in Colorado and I am thankful for all the support of so many volunteers.
Priscilla Lundblad ATRA Colorado Coordinator
ONTARIOOntario has been busy with rescue but not in the usual way. There have been some great adoptions and foster placements. I would like to thank the many volunteers that have helped with some of the transports, home visits and with fostering. We saw Charli and Harley go to great foster homes. Harley is now with her new family and we all couldn’t be happier. Charli is looking for his forever home. Take a look on the Airedales for Adoption page.
Thank you to all that helped get Suzie Q to her destination. Trudy as usual did a great job finding the right people to help with the transport.

BellaBella made it to her 10th birthday on May 28, but today crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She has been sick for some time, a serious heart murmur, a splenic tumor which was inoperable and a back that gave
her constant trouble. Since last fall she has spent periods of time on Prednisone for her back and was on pain medication full time. She began another series of Prednisone last weekend, but it did not seem to help. We had blood work done yesterday to confirm what we suspected. The tumor was bleeding, causing anemia and elevated blood counts due to pain. After being spoiled for the last time, we helped her cross. Bella was always a worried dog. She had come into rescue at the age of 2 from an owner that kept her penned up outside and failed to feed her on a regular basis. She was infested with fleas and ringworm when she escaped from the pen and a Good Samaritan called ATRA. We loved her and will miss her. Left behind is her life partner, Brodie who will be grieving too.

Becky & MaxOn May 28th our Becky crossed the Rainbow Bridge where we’re sure she was greeted by the Mauk Airedales that crossed before her, as well as her litter mate Nolin. Becky was the most beautiful, sweet, good natured Airedale. A friend told me recently they didn’t remember me talking much about Becky. That’s because she was just so good. Becky was only 7 years old but 2 years ago was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus. We knew that Prednisone would shorten her life but we had two more years to watch her prance across the yard, play tug with Boone and chase the critters and birds from “her” yard.
We miss you Becky.
We also want to remember Max Sperry. Max was my very first foster after becoming an ATRA coordinator and I was sad to hear that on June 3rd he too had crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He was almost enough of a challenge to make me resign. Max had never been in a house, didn’t want any part of it, howled all night to go out, wouldn’t potty
on leash and we didn’t have a fence at the time. We worked through the issues. He and Boone became great friends. When Max was adopted by the Sperry family in Ohio, Boone missed having a buddy and was the reason we adopted Becky. Max found a wonderful forever home with the Sperrys and has stayed in touch with us over the years. I was sad to get the news. I know he is missed by his two & four legged family. Enjoy your furry wings Becky and Max.Wallace & Sandra Mauk

Ruby was a happy Airedale finding a forever home with Lori and Steve Werth. Volunteers helping Ruby in her transport were Walt McKenzie, Mary Halstead plus Vickie and Ron Brinkley. Iowa Coordinator June Haas was, as always, ready to transport Ruby and Mary Jo Koranda had the rewarding experience of
introducing Ruby to her new parents and took pictures of the joyful introduction. Thank you Mary Jo! The Werth family reports Ruby is settling in beautifully with their 2 legged and 4 legged family.
Suzi Q was another blessed Airedale having volunteers Judy Hodgson and Alan Colter transport her to a fantastic home.
ATRA is thankful for the expertise and caring of Vicki Kudla at Superior K9 to help with our “Kids”.
On a personal note I would like to thank the Lady of Kansas Rescue, Terry Kratchman, for her nurturing personality, many hours of chatting, and humor that made my position of transportation coordinator so fun. Terry was a wonderful friend during my first stint with ATRA in the early 2000’s and one of the first people to welcome me back in 2013. God bless you Lady!
Please contact your local shelter as a volunteer to have them notify you of an Airedale in need and promote Airedale rescue. Our “Kids” bring joy to all!
God Bless, Trudy Transportation Coordinator
Jazz My ‘Jazzy girl’ came to me and stayed for a little over a year. She had come from a family in Ohio that neglected her and possibly abused her. She was such a loving girl, and I hope she found true love with me and my Max during her too short stay. Her legacy is that she taught my other rescue, Max how to be a dog. He blossomed after she came to stay with us, and she taught him how to play, romp in the snow (she loved the snow), how to walk on a leash and not be scared, chase those rebel flies that entered the house and know how to be secure. Max is grieving her absence, as am I. She went to the Rainbow Bridge on March 26, 2013 after being diagnosed with lymphoma and debilitating spondylosis. Thanks for being my dog Jazz, I love you.
