About 30 people attended the Budget Hearing regarding the AFT Collective Bargaining Agreement. The contract would cost the District about $31,000 the first year and save the District about $20,000 the second year and would include two additional “steps” for teachers who have been teaching more than 13 years. Chair-man Rich Pelletier explained that the Board had worked hard with the union to come to an agreement and focused on the health insurance portion of the contract. However, the majority of the comments by

people objecting to the presentation were not regarding the money involved, but the fact that the Board had not changed the “evergreen clause” as the current contract allows increases to continue until a new contract is adopted rather than “freezing” any salaries or benefits. Bob Johnson of Hillsboro stated that he doubted that any agreement would be accepted by the people until the evergreen clause was deleted from the contract. A Deliberative Session is scheduled for September 12 and a Ballot Vote will be held on October 18.

Evergreen Clause remains in H-D teacher's contract

Dr. Michele D. Perkins, President of New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire, re-ports that donations to the College’s annual fund were 61 percent higher than the previ-ous year. The fiscal year 2011 increase is the largest in the College’s sixty-five year history. In the past year, the College received $695,826 in unrestricted annual giving compared to $432,521 in the year prior, reflecting the unprecedented 61 percent increase.

Henniker Youth Theatre was named one of sixteen 9/11 Remembrance Grant winners by generationOn, an international service organization for youth. The grant will cover the costs of rehearsing, renting the Henniker Community Center for a reading of a new play titled, 9/11 Students Remember. The play will be presented at 2 pm on Sunday, September 11th and will be followed by a reception and Q & A. This event is open to the public.

The new work is inspired by comments

written by students after 9/11. Some of these students were as young as six and others were in college. These comments include memories of students directly affected by 9/11 (some of whom lived and went to school in the shadows of the Twin Towers) as well as memories of students who lived a world away from the tragedy. For the Henniker presentation we’ll be adding comments from our own actors—including some who were not alive on 9/11 but have studied the event or learned about it from others.

Youth Theatre presents "9/11 Students Remember"

On July 31st, WWII B-17 pilot Bob Gefvert, 89, of Hillsborough traveled to Stowe, VT to pilot a restored WWII-era plane, an advanced trainer (AT-6)--the single-engine version of a plane (AT-7) that he flew in 1945. The opportunity came through an organization called History Flight that is working even after all these years to locate MIA servicemembers from WWII. Courtesy Photo.
