About the Centre for Language Studies
The Centre for Language Studies (CLS) has been serving the foreign
lan- guage needs of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences since
July 2001 and has today some 80 full-time and part-time faculty
members.
CLS supports language learning under various area studies depart-
ments and programmes in FASS. The modules are available to Arts
stu- dents as part of their major requirements (Area Studies
students) and as unrestricted electives outside their majors. In
addition, they are also offered to students in the University’s
Student Exchange Programme and to cross-faculty students who may
read them as breadth modules outside their faculties. The Centre
has currently an enrolment of more than 3000 students per
semester.
The following languages are taught in CLS at the elementary,
interme- diate and advanced levels:
Arabic Bahasa
Indonesia Chinese French German Hindi Japanese
Korean Malay Spanish Tamil Thai Vietnamese
CLS places strong emphasis on interaction and innovativeness in the
teaching of its modules. This is achieved through constantly
keeping abreast of the latest developments and trends in the field
of teaching methodology, syllabus design and curriculum
development. CLS is known for its strong commitment to excellence
in teaching and mem- bers of its teaching faculty have been
consistently recognized by the University for their fine teaching
performances. Awards bestowed upon the Centre’s teaching faculty
include the Faculty Teaching Excel- lence Award, the University’s
Annual Teaching Excellence Award and the prestigious Outstanding
Educator Award.
Special Programmes/Activities
Attractive and enriching immersion programmes are organised for
var- ious languages. Each immersion will typically last 3 to 4
weeks. The programmes usually include an intensive course in the
target language,
family stay, educational visits, cultural activities and excursions
in for- eign countries. Such programmes provide students with
excellent op- portunities to interact with native speakers of the
target languages and to gain valuable exposure to their cultures
and societies. Project- based activities such as cultural nights
and field-trips are also con- ducted in certain language programmes
to enable students to experi- ence the target cultures and their
customs during the course.
CLS Certificate of Language Proficiency
The Centre awards certificates of proficiency at the elementary,
inter- mediate and advanced levels to students who successfully
complete specified qualifying CLS modules. With the launch of these
certificates in 2010, the Centre is now able to give due
recognition to the efforts and achievements of our students in
their strive for mastery in a or even several foreign
languages.
Contact Information
Students are most welcome to contact our General Office or the con-
venors of individual language programmes if they have enquires re-
garding the language modules taught by the Centre. Please refer to
the Centre’s website at http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/cls/ for contact
details and latest information about the Centre.

About this booklet
This booklet was originally created to commemorate the 10th
Anniver- sary of the CLS’ founding in 2011 with useful phrases from
the 12 lan- guages offered at CLS by then. With the inclusion of
the Spanish Pro- gramme in August 2015 at the Centre, the booklet
has now a new look. We like to cordially invite you to embark the
exciting journey of learn- ing a foreign language with us in
preparation for the global future.
