+Step 1

Complained about feeding myself for the past 2 years Portions in stores aren’t meant for 1 person I knew I wasn’t recycling food packaging well

Chose to log my wasted food and food packaging thrown out

The action itself was a reminder to photograph

+Step 3

Thought there may be trends or cycles

Some waste repeated everyday

Looked at how many “things” I bought versus how many pieces were wasted

More food waste or packaging waste overall?

Waste (Products)

A waste product is the thing you buy and the pieces are the individual parts with it

Ex. A cereal box is 1 product, but the cardboard box and plastic bag make it 2 pieces

+Step 4

Environmental If I don’t eat it it goes to waste or expires Packaging lifespan vs. food lifespan

Financially Wasted food is wasted money Likely spending more on foods with more packaging

Emotionally (?) This assignment made me guilty about my habits

Sustainability

+Step 5

Marty Siegel look at the next small step rather than the end goal

My current behavior Impulse buys at the grocery store Centered around convenience Picky about expiration dates

Small changes I can make Buying in bulk Buying more sustainably packaged products Switch to a reusable K-cup Thinking about what I will use throughout the week

Will also help keep meals balanced

How can I change my behavior?

Page 9: + Daily Measures: Food and Packaging Waste Anna Mirabella 2/4/15

+Step 6

Target my behavior at the grocery store Dictates my actions throughout the week Think about what I really need

Applicable to other aspects of my behavior

A design to change my behavior

+How does it help?

Forces me to think about how much I am getting out of a product Packaging: not worth it unless at

least 2-3 times

Makes sure I don’t buy more than I need to Less food will go bad from being

unused

Makes sure what I buy will be used up that week If I plan when I’ll eat it it is less

likely to go bad

+Reflection

More mindful of my waste

Doing what I know I should have been doing all along

Thinking of the next small step
