Thousands of people annually in North America are treated in hospital emergency rooms, doctors’ offi ces, clinics and other medical settings for injuries that happened while shovelling or removing ice and snow. There are several simple strategies you can use to keep yourself out of this group of people this year.
Cold, tight muscles are more prone to injury than warmed up, fl exible muscles. Do yourself a favour by warming up for fi ve to ten minutes before shovelling. Get your blood moving with a brisk walk, or by marching in place.
Removing small amounts of snow frequently is less strenuous than removing a large pile at one time.
If possible, removing snow over a period of days, or removing it before it builds up too much will lessen the strain on the back and arms.
In deep snow,
remove a few inches at a time, rather than attempting to shovel the full depth at once. When shovelling, take a break for a minute or two every 10-15 minutes or if you feel overworked at any point. Use this time to stretch your arms, shoulders, and back to keep them warm and fl exible.
Whenever possible, push the snow to one side, rather than lifting it. Keep the shovel close to the body rather than in front with arms stretched out.
This is particularly important with heavy or deep snow which, of course, is the only sort that seems to fall on my driveway! If you have to lift, try to bend at the knees with your back straight, scoop some snow and straighten up, lifting with the knees, not the spine. Carry the snow to the pile or throw it
forward, don’t throw it behind you. Try not to bend at the waist and don’t hold your breath when lifting!
When gripping the shovel, keep your hands about
12 inches apart to provide greater stability and minimize the chances of injuring your
lower back. An ergonomic snow
shovel can help take some of the effort out of your snow removal chores. A shovel with a curved handle or an adjustable handle length will minimize painful bending, requiring you to bend your knees only slightly and arch your back very slightly while keeping the shovel blade on the ground. In addition, a small, lightweight, plastic blade helps reduce the amount of weight that you are moving.
Slippery conditions while shovelling can lead to slipping and/or falls and strains. Shoes or boots with
good treads will help to minimize injuries from slipping. Spreading sand, rock salt, or kitty litter on your sidewalk or driveway will increase traction and reduce the likelihood of slipping on the ice.
The best way to ensure that you don’t hurt yourself while shovelling is, of course, to hire your neighbour’s teenagers or fl y south for the winter. Just make sure you tip them well and provide hot chocolate when they fi nish.

Q. What are the riskiest “kisses” of them all?
A. The recent rise of interest in vampires, particularly among teens, has brought to the fore the practice of biting another person to draw blood, says Sheril Kirshenbaum in “The Science of Kissing.” “Just don’t do it,” she cautions. Swapping saliva through trading kisses is vastly safer than injecting gobs of potentially dangerous microorganisms into the bloodstream of your beloved. Killer kisses can strike even a conventional pair when one of them becomes covered with hives or has trouble breathing after coming into contact with trace amounts of food on the other’s lips. Then there was the bizarre case reported in 2009 in Florida, when authorities put out a search for three boys, aged ten to twelve, who had been seen kissing a dead rabid bat. “Who knows what they were thinking but they were taking a tremendous risk. There is no cure for rabies.”
Strange but True by Bill Sones and Rich Sones, PH.D.

Last week was diffi cult to get out on the water because of the wind, rain and snow. The Fishermen that do, use smaller lures and some undersized springs have been caught and released. Small anchovies with Teaser Heads, green or clear are popular. The majority of boats have been pulled out of the water but some locals have been getting out. If you can get out try the Lighthouse and the Hump.
Fishing from shore can produce some nice trout at the Upper Campbell using worms and roe. I am getting reports of 18 inch fi sh being caught in the cold
weather months. 2012 was a very good year for anglers fi shing both salt and freshwater. I am arranging a trip in the Comox area to do some prawning. The next few weeks I will be looking at fl y patterns that work in the area during the winter, some historical pictures will be looked at and stories about fi shing life in the past will be featured here in the Fishing Corner.

Summer JoySpecial to MidWeek
In late October, 18-month-old Ursula Joy’s family left their home on Hornby Island for an overnight visit to Salt Spring Island.
They haven’t been home since, and won’t be until at least late next spring.
Ursula had been a bit under the weather for a little while, with what they’d been told was probably a virus, so her parents decided to have her seen at the hospital in Victoria while they were visiting down Island.
It was soon discovered that baby Ursula had a brain tumour.
She and her mum Ceridwen were fl own to B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, and her father and two sisters, age 4 and 8, followed.
Two days later, baby Ursula underwent a 12-hour surgery to remove a large tumour, which was wrapped around the brain stem and a bundle of nerves on the right side of her brain. A few days later a potential side effect of the surgery was confi rmed.
Ursula is unable to swallow, and her right vocal cords
are paralyzed. Thus her journey took on another dimension of being fed every two hours by tube. It is hoped that her swallowing refl ex will return as healing continues, but this is uncertain at this time.
A biopsy confi rmed what was already suspected: the tumour was not benign, but
rather a fairly nasty and aggressive type.
Ursula was given a short week to recover from the surgery, during which she stayed with her family at the apartment that Comox Valley charity You Are Not Alone generously provided for the family to use. There she was able to have some fun playing with her sisters
and being a regular toddler.
Then she returned to the hospital for surgery to place a catheter so that chemo drugs could be administered directly to her heart. A six- to nine -month regimen of chemotherapy is planned, which includes six rounds of toxic drugs, with each round being stronger than the last. The fi rst dose has already been given.
Anyone who has experienced this treatment knows just how ill it makes you, and baby Ursula, who can’t even understand what is happening to her or why, is no exception. She suffered high fevers, vomited up her feeding tube several times, and at one point aspirated fl uid and stopped breathing.
She is recuperating from the initial chemo treatment, sitting up in bed playing with her sticker books, interacting with her family, laughing and smiling, and playing games of catching a ball. She was even allowed an hour out of hospital and enjoyed a walk to the botanical gardens.
She is soon to have surgery to put a feeding
tube in directly through her side, and her second round of chemo took place in the middle of December. Royston naturopath Dr. Kind has also joined the team of specialists who are treating baby Ursula.
Her parents are caring for her at the hospital, and a nanny is living with the other children at the YANA apartment, so that the family can all spend time together as often as possible.
During the chemo treatments, it takes both parents to care for Ursula round the clock, but during her better times between treatments they can spell each other off to spend time with the other girls.
Needless to say, Ursula’s parents are no longer able to work, so fundraising efforts have been taking place to help take fi nancial burdens off these people
who already have so much stress to bear.
The Ursula Joy Trust Fund has been set up, and donations of any amount, no matter how small, are being gratefully accepted. Donations can be made at any Coastal Community Credit Union branch.
Ursula’s grandmother, Summer Joy of Merville, recently organized a house concert fundraiser featuring Kel Kelly and $2,600 was raised for the trust fund. Other fundraisers have been going on elsewhere. It is truly heartwarming to see how supportive people in the Comox Valley/Campbell River area and on Hornby Island have been in helping the parents through their darkest hours. Ursula means little bear, and her family hopes her little bear’s strength will carry her through.

Glutathione (pronounced gloo-tuh-THIGH-ohn) is as essential for life as oxygen.
It’s possibly the most important molecule to our health and longevity, yet few people have ever heard of it, let alone understand why it’s important.
Glutathione, a tri-peptide, is the major cell protector and master antioxidant in the body, working to cleanse our cells of toxins and free radicals (one noted physician refers to it as “the mother of all antioxidants”).
High levels of glutathione in the cells helps protect us from oxidative stress, which has been associated with
more than 74 major diseases, including cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
Though we all produce glutathione naturally when the proper building blocks are in place, things like pollution, stress, poor diet and even aging all serve to reduce our glutathione levels. That, in turn, weakens our immune system and neutralizes the most potent weapon we have in the fi ght against intracellular infl ammation, disease and the symptoms of aging.
The trick to boosting glutathione levels, however, isn’t quite as
straightforward as one might think. Though some companies have marketed oral glutathione supplements, these have shown to be largely ineffective,
since glutathione is destroyed in the digestive system. What have been clinically proven to increase glutathione, however, are supplements that provide the body with what is needed to make glutathione. These include RiboCeine,
a compound shown to protect and deliver one of the key components of glutathione production.
With poor diets and environmental toxins as ubiquitous as they are, it’s never been more important to understand the vital role of glutathione and how we can help our bodies produce more of it. I look forward to sharing more about this veritable wonder molecule in this column.

MAKING A CONTRIBUTION...A local women’s group, CREW, a group of local women formed when the Campbell River branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women folded in the late 1990s, made a big donation to Cedar Elementary School last Monday. The women donated warm clothing and a cheque for $535 to go towards providing breakfast, lunch, fresh fruits and vegetables to children attending the school. Pictured are students Kiara Hunter, Sophia Barge, Jordan Merrick and Noah Decaire, school principal Melinda Geberal (centre) and Yvonne Andre and Pat James (back row) from CREW.
