SEWS CONNECT WITH THE BEST

Packaging Specification Requirements

SEWS Electronic Division

I. Packaging Overview

a. Introduction

i. These policies and standards, as well as any subsequent version or revisions made thereto, shall be deemed a Contract Document as that term is defined in the applicable SEWSs Packaging Terms and Conditions and/or if applicable SEWSs Terms and Conditions.

ii. Background

1. Sumitomo requires that all part shipments to its North American manufacturing facilities be performed in a timely manner without damage to dunnage or products.

2. All packaging must comply with the requirements set forth.

3. No alternative packaging will be accepted without prior written approval. Any requests for alternative packaging should be submitted using the Sumitomo Packaging Specification Data Sheet

iii. Objective

1. Right packaging

2. Right amount

3. Right time

b. Packaging Definitions

i. Dunnage Packaging material inside the container used to separate and hold the parts in the desired orientation. It must not be permanently fixed to the container.

ii. Packaging Returnable or expendable containers, used for suppliers to ship parts. Specified in packaging document or by supplier.

iii. Pallet - Refers to a support with 4-way fork access on which totes are placed for handling and transportation. Sometimes referred to as a skid.

iv. Top cap - The lid placed over the top layer of totes on a pallet. The top cap acts as a lid for the top layer of totes, and also as a level base for stacking of palletized loads for transportation.

v. Tote - Plastic returnable container designed to be handled manually and to be stacked with a pallet/top cap system for transportation & handling.

c. Packaging Specifications

i. Standard:

1. This section will provide standard specifications for all SEWS facilities.

2. Standard packaging specifications are necessary to ensure:

a. Safety

b. Quality

c. Productivity

d. Cost

ii. Nonstandard:

1. SEWS will not approve nonstandard packaging unless there is no other option.

2. Nonstandard packaging negatively impacts safety, quality, productivity and cost.

3. Examples:

a. Safety: Nonstandard packaging creates unstable stacking conditions.

b.

c. Quality: Part damage during transportation due to poor stacking conditions.

d. Productivity: Nonstandard packaging causes wasted space in trailers.

i. Individual containers may appear to be more efficient, but the actual condition is an inefficient shipping condition, when evaluating impact to overall network.

e. Cost: Future model reuse and flexibility between models, is unlikely with nonstandard packaging.

i. Nonstandard packaging is often part specific; therefore cannot be utilized for any other current or future commodities.

a. Returnable Packaging Use

a. Returnable packaging purchased by SEWS is for use ONLY within the SEWS network.

b. DO NOT USE ANY SEWS RETURNABLE PACKAGING, including PALLETS/LIDS FOR:

i. Other Tier I shipments, warehouses, direct supply or any destination outside of the SEWS network.

ii. Internal requirements above the quantity allocated by SEWS: Ex: Work In Progress (WIP), service parts, build ahead, quality quarantine, etc.

iii. If additional returnable packaging and labels are required, the Supplier must purchase the additional amount.

c. If totes or pallets with the PROPERTY OF SUMITOMO logo have been allocated to you, please treat the same as a SUMITOMO SHIPMENT pallet.

i. There is no need to cover the SUMITOMO logo.

b. General packaging requirements

a. It is the suppliers responsibility to ensure good packaging so that parts reach SEWS facilities without damage to the packaging or product.

c. Bags

a. All product must be bagged inside of external container.

b. Bag size shall be product variable except where specified (example: seal production)

c. Bags to be clear in color

i. More details on wooden pallet??

ii. Palletize expendable containers securely on a 40x48 4-way wooden pallet and cover with a corrugated top cap.

iii. Boxes must not overhang the base of the pallet. This could result in damaged freight when loading onto the trailer.

iv. Pallets must be constructed to meet the minimum requirement for the load handled.

i. Spiral nailed construction is required.

ii. Stringer style, non-reversible construction is required with 3.5 in minimum height fork opening.

c. All pallets must be packaged in a manner to prevent damage to product

and container while in transit and/or storage.

d. Double stacking of pallets is acceptable if sufficient protection (sturdy

divider) is secured in place between top of bottom load and bottom of

top pallet.

e. Securing of boxes/loads to pallet:

1. Stretch wrap

a. 70 gage wrap minimum

b. Number of wraps: 3 wraps on bottom / 2 wraps on top (minimum)

c. Wrap must be secured to the pallet with minimum of 3 wraps

ii. Banding
