Assignment #3: Design your own armour, using the following instructions.

Imagine you are the ruling monarch of a fictional country at war sometime in the past, present or future. Before your soldier go into battle, they need armour to protect them. Your task is to design at least one item of armour for your soldiers. The armour must be functional and easily identifiable as belonging to your army. Think carefully about your designs. Choose symbols and colours that represent you and your country. When you have sketched your designs, answer the questions below to explain your choices.

Topic 2: Women’s Fashion

Assignment #1: Before you read:

Read pages 70 – 73 in your text book. Answer all questions using complete sentences

1. At your school, who determines what fashion are acceptable?2. Why might a fashion style be acceptable in one situation but not in another?

Assignment #2: School Uniforms vs Dress Code

1. As a student what do you think about uniforms and school dress codes?

2. How would you define the terms uniform and dress code? What is the difference between the two?

3. Many schools require their students to wear a uniform because doing so makes it quick and easy to distinguish students from outside visitors. Why is this important?

4. Some students don't like wearing a uniform at school but are proud to wear one at work or for sports. Why do you think some students have a different attitude toward wearing uniforms outside school?

5. In the chart below, list the advantages and disadvantages of having a school uniform, a dress code, or no clothing rules at school.

Fashion is always evolving and changing. Experts believe that fashion cycles occur every 20 to 30 years. But new fashion styles don’t always start from scratch. Designers often dig into history books for inspiration. Every “new” style has been done before in another time and place. Here’s your chance to prove it!

Choose a period from this topic that is of particular interest to you. Do research on the Internet to find and print examples of the fashion styles of this period. Then search for more recent fashion styles that borrowed some of the elements of these fashions. Create a poster that illustrates both sets of fashion, with point-form notes and arrows highlighting the similarities in the design features. Some suggestions are listed below but you can choose any fashion element.

Topic 4: Women’s Fashion Mid-1800s to the 1970s

Assignment #1:

Read pages 78 – 81 in your text book.

1. Look at the pictures in this topic and made a prediction about the changes in Western fashion from the 1800s to 1970s. How did design changes reflect changing attitudes toward women?

2. How do the fashion picture and the magazine cover on Page 78, show obsession with decoration?

3. On page 79, there is a picture of a hooped skirt, how practical would a hooped skirt be for women?

4. What features of the corset and the hobble dress made them uncomfortable and impractical? (Page 80)

Assignment #2: Interactive Game – Mind your Manners

Log on to the website for the McCord Museum (http://www.mccord-museum.qc.ca/en.) and play the interactive game Mind Your Manners. The game offers two options, one for the Victorian period and the other choose the Roaring Twenties. Follow the instructions to explore fashion styles and manners in their era. Each game offers four (4) different situations where you must make appropriate decisions in response to multiple-choice questions. Record the correct answers to each question on your assignment paper.

Assignment #3: Create a Fashion Ad

Create a fashion add for one of the following fashion trends. You may find pictures in magazines, the Internet or you may draw your fashion magazine.

Choose from the following:

Hip hop Sportswear/athletics Western/rodeo Hippie/new age Any other fashion style of your choice

The ad should include visuals, appropriate descriptions and information about factors that influenced this fashion.
