Key Responsibilities and Skills Required:General outdoor work involving the growing of plants, their maintenance and requirements. In the first year you will be placed within one of Glasgows Parks, Nursery or Gardens. In your 2nd year you will be placed in one of our Cleansing Depots. You will be required to attend Daldowie Training Centre, where you will receive training in: Health and safety, propagation of plants, general knowledge of plants and growing media, plant maintenance and establishment, pests and diseases, a range of machinery, recycling, and cleansing operations.

Education Requirements: Core skills; Candidates are required to have Information Technology and Numeracy at Intermediate 1.Level 4 Standard Grades/National Units at Intermediate 2 would be desirable but not essential.

Aptitudes: Applicants should be keen, interested in outdoor work, be reasonably fit and of good health. Ideally have an interest in Horticulture and the Environment and be able to carry out both practical and academic work to SVQ Level 2 standard.

Additional Requirements: Interviews are conducted over 2 days and include a practical and written assessment.

Company Profile: Glasgow Scientific Services, part of Land and Environmental Services is a busy public analysts laboratory in the North of Glasgow. With around 50 personnel, it provides a comprehensive scientific, analytical and consultancy service from its UKAS accredited laboratory. Amongst our customers are local authorities, private business and government agencies. All aspects of environmental monitoring are undertaken, covering radioactivity, contaminated land, tip leachates, landfill gases, air pollution and noxious odours. The laboratory can classify waste to indicate its status with respect to disposal legislation.

The Food Laboratory provides a Public Analyst service for adulteration, contamination, substitution, composition and labelling while the Microbiology Laboratory provides the Food Examiner and water examination services. The Consumer Protection function analyse and advise, amongst other things, on toys, graphic instruments, textiles, household chemicals, ceramic wear, and provide an Agricultural Analyst service for fertilisers and animal feedstuffs. Our Water Laboratory analyse and advises on the quality of drinking water, swimming pool water and Jacuzzi waters. It can also help identify the source of surface or ground water.

Key Responsibilities and Skills Required:Working in a laboratory based environment and training over a 4 year period towards a Modern Apprenticeship at Level 3 in Laboratory Science. Training will be delivered at Forth Valley College, day release and includes NC Units leading to a PDA in Laboratory Science followed by an HNC in Applied Sciences. Duties involve chemical analysis and/or microbiological examination in a range of work areas including instrumentation, calibration, environmental, consumer, food and waters. In-house training will also be provided throughout the apprenticeship on a needs basis.

Education Requirements: Minimum of 2 Higher & 6 Standard Grades/National 4/5 (Maths, English and Science subjects desirable).
