Learning at Home

Most children in the world learn at school, but do you know that there are also many

children that learn at home? Cindy is a 15 year old girl. She lives in Sweden. She

does not learn at school. Her parents teach her at home. Does she like to learn at

home? This is what Cindy says:

I like to learn at home. I learn history and mathematics with my father and my mother

teaches me English and geography. I learn some things with teachers on the computer.

But there are also some problems with learning at home. I don't have friends to play

with and talk to. It is more fun to learn together with friends.

PAST 100 – SOME PEOPLE CAN!How old are the oldest people? Can they help us understand how to live long, happy lives?

Fred Hale, the world’s oldest man, died in November, 2004. He was 113 years old. Fred was born in Maine in 1890. He had five children, nine

grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren. Fred lived an active life. After he retired, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, traveling and beekeeping. Fred was also the world’s oldest driver - still driving at age 108! Fred said that his long life was genetic – it was passed on by his parents, who both lived into their 90s. He added that the honey and bee pollen he ate every day kept him fit.

According to the Guinness World Records’ website, the oldest woman is 114-year-old Hendrikje Schipper from Holland. Hendrikje’s health is still good, but her eyesight and hearing are not as good as when she was 108. In an interview to a Dutch newspaper, she said, “I think it is nice to have lived to be this age. I’m not scared of death. Everyone has to go. I hope I don’t have to suffer; I hope that they find me dead in bed one day.” Hendrikje believes that orange juice and a herring every day can keep you happy and healthy for many years.

So, start eating honey and herring, and drink orange juice, and perhaps you, too, will celebrate your 120th birthday.Answer the questions:

Internet Addiction

5

Do you sleep less than five hours a night because you feel the need to surf the Internet "just a little bit longer"? Have your grades gone down because you’re spending too much time on the computer, and not enough time doing homework? Do you lie to your parents about what you're doing on the Internet and how long it takes? If your answer to any of these questions is "yes", you may be suffering from Internet addiction.

10

Although the Internet is a wonderful source of information, it is also a source of danger. While no one knows for sure how many teenagers are addicted to the Internet, psychologist Kimberly S. Young of the Center for Online Addiction believes that between 5 and 10 percent of Internet users have problems controlling their Internet habits.

15

Internet addiction can come in many different forms. Some people spend hours at a time chatting online forgetting that they have a family and friends. Others prefer to just jump from site to site, even though they have many other important things to do in life.

If you or someone you know is suffering from Internet addiction, it's best to get professional help before it's too late. Internet addicts have failed school, lost jobs, gotten divorced, and even killed themselves – all because they didn't take care of their problem in time.

Answer questions 1-5 in English.

AMERICANS LOVE ICE CREAM

11

Ice cream is popular in many parts of the world, but Americans eat more ice cream than people in any other country. The average American eats about 14 liters of ice cream a year!

No one knows when ice cream was first made. Perhaps it was in 1295 when the Italian explorer Marco Polo brought recipes for "water ices" from China to Europe.

Ice cream reached America in the early 1700s. At first, it was a luxury food and people couldn't buy it. They had to make it at home. Then, in 1851, Jacob Fussel, an American milk dealer opened the first ice cream factory.

Ice cream cones* became popular at the 1904 World Fair. Ice cream snacks appeared in 1921. Nowadays, almost 100 years later, the United States of America produces more than 7 billion liters of ice cream a year.

Children and Junk Food

Read the text, then answer questions 1-5 which follow.

Junk food is very popular in many countries in the world, especially in the United States. The term "junk food" is used to talk about fattening, unhealthy food. Recent studies show that a quarter of all the food an average American eats is junk food. When it comes to children, the amount of junk food they consume is even bigger.

There have been many studies that show that junk food is dangerous to a person's health. Therefore, many parents try to limit the amount of junk food their children eat. This is not so easy because there are many things that tempt children to eat junk food.

Junk food manufacturers, that is, companies that make junk food, advertise their food in a number of ways. They use famous people and athletes in ads in newspapers and magazines. Many children who see their favorite celebrities or athletes in the ads believe what they say about the food. During the weekend, children often watch cartoons in the early-morning hours. Most of the commercials shown during those programs are for junk food. Many of them use cartoon characters that the children like.

Vending machines at schools also tempt children to eat junk food. The machines, from which you can buy drinks or snacks, sell unhealthy, fattening food and drinks. Although a child comes to school with a healthy sandwich from home, he may choose to buy unhealthy food from the machine instead of eating his sandwich.

Parents cannot really prevent their children from eating junk food. Health experts say they should discuss the dangers of eating unhealthy food with their children and try to make them think twice before they are tempted to eat it.

Case Middle School in Honolulu, Hawaii, is special because it is earth friendly*. The school designed everything in the school buildings to save energy and materials. They built about 25% of the buildings out of recycled material. They also used recycled milk containers to make the students' lockers.

They built each school building to get lots of light and air. This saves electricity. There is also an air-conditioning system that saves electricity, and one building uses only solar energy.

The school has beautiful gardens. Most schools spend lots of money on water to keep the gardens green. But Case Middle School uses rainwater from a special underground tank to water the grounds.

Signs around the school explain what materials they used in each building, how the school saves water, energy, and more.

Can you stop being angry and upset for 24 hours straight? For many, this is not an easy thing to do, but Janice Hathy tried to get people to do just that on May 26, 2004. On that special day, which she created, and called the "All American Grump Out", she asked people not to be grumpy. She wanted people to smile, be pleasant and polite, and help each other. This was Hathy's way of helping America smile a little more after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Janice Hathy is a stress expert and a big optimist. However, she wasn’t always a happy person. In the past, she preferred to complain and feel depressed, especially after she had had a personal problem. One day, she realized that that was not the right way to live, and she decided to begin smiling. Now, she also has a business called "Smile Mania", which helps make other people happy. According to Hathy, smiling lowers stress, improves your health, makes you feel less depressed and angry, and allows you to have better relationships with others.

By the way, not only Americans participated in the "All American Grump Out". Many people from other countries heard about the special event and decided to join in the fun. If you are ready to smile for a full day next year, you can be part of it, too.

Songs of Love

5-

10-

If someone writes a song for you, it makes you feel very special. John

Beltzer wants sick children to feel special. In 1996 he started an

organization called "Songs of Love." In this organization, musicians

write and record songs for very sick children. Their songs make the

children feel good and forget about their problems.

Parents write to "Songs of Love" about their sick child. They tell about

his/her friends and the things he/she likes to do. A songwriter takes

this information and uses it to write the song. A singer records the

song and the child gets it on a CD.

Today "Songs of Love" is a big organization. They have 100

songwriters that write songs for children in 60 hospitals in the USA.

A Good Buy?Read the text, and then answer questions 1-4 which follow.

1 Do you realize how advertising changes us? When we have to choose which

product to buy, we remember the ads* which try to sell the product. Often we're

quite satisfied with the product. But, how many times were you unhappy with

what you bought?

5 Advertising is useful when it tells us about a new product and explains why it can

be helpful to us. But, it is different when ads promise us things like "with this

shampoo, you'll be just like the beautiful model in the ad" and "with this cream

you'll be as popular as the girl in the ad.

that we will be as important, admired or happy as the person in the ad if we buy

their products.

SPOTLIGHT: TWO AMAZING TEENAGERS

Read the text, then answer the questions which follow.

When you think of people who have made a difference in the world, you usually think of people like Albert Einstein. However, young people can also make a difference. Amanda Dunbar and Ryan Hreljac )= "Hurl-jack"( are examples of two youngsters who have brought changes to the world.

5 Amanda Dunbar of Texas was 13 when she first picked up a paintbrush. Since then, this amazing young artist says her career "just sort of exploded". Today, at the age of 21, Amanda earns up to $50,000 for oil paintings, which she sells in art galleries around the country. She says they "are about simple pleasures in life". She tries to pay attention to those little moments every day.

10 Amanda is using her experience to inspire others. She started a charity organization to help improve art programs for kids. So far, the group has given away more than $350,000. Amanda also visits schools and works with the kids. Amanda's purpose is to bring children her message: "Use creative outlets for expression instead of using violence."

15 Ryan Hreljac of Ontario, Canada, was in the first grade when his teacher talked about people in Africa who did not have clean drinking water. He raised his first $70 by doing extra household chores. Ryan then turned to local groups for their support. Since then, Ryan, now 13, has helped to raise over $800,000 to build wells in more than 70 villages.

20 Ryan has received several awards for his efforts to provide clean water to people in Africa. He speaks to community groups, schools and world leaders, asking them to help him reach his goal: "Clean water for everyone in Africa."

Both Amanda and Ryan are proof that one person, no mater what age, can make a difference in the world!

Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 to an upper class British family. At the age of 20, she decided that she didn’t want to get married, because she wanted to be a nurse. However, Florence’s parents were angry that she refused to get married. In the end,

Florence became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” because she would walk around the hospital at night with a lamp to make sure that the soldiers were clean, had food and

The Government made a new law which doesn't allow smoking in public places. As a result, less people are smoking. People are not allowed to smoke on buses or in movie theaters. Many workplaces ask smokers to go to a "smoking corner" – the only place where they may smoke.

"The new law helps people understand that smoking is wrong," says Dr. Alma Avni of the Health Ministry. "Many smokers are happy about the law. Some people said that they would like to stop smoking. Others said that because of the new law people ask them to stop smoking, so they quit."

Dr. Avni says that Israelis are smoking less than they used to. Today only 31 percent* of the population* smokes. In 1980, 42 percent smoked. Dr. Avni is optimistic; she believes that very few people will smoke in the future.

A Break From School

5

10

15

During the summer vacation, children need a break from the routine of school. They need time for relaxation and enjoyment just like adults. However, they also need a framework.

Young children can benefit a lot from going to summer camp. It helps children to increase their self- confidence. Through the camp experience, children learn more about themselves and their own abilities. They have a chance to experience challenging activities. Children also learn to respect each other, work together and cooperate with each other. For many kids, the benefits of the camp experience will stay with them long after they go home.

For older children, getting a summer job can also provide them with the structure they need. Getting your first summer job is an unforgettable experience! But before getting the job, there are certain things teenagers should consider. They need to decide what kind of job they would like to have, where the job is and how many hours a day they would want to work.

If the teenager loves animals, for example, he can work at a pet store or offer to walk dogs when the owners are on vacation. If he likes being with people, he can work in a shop or even in a fast- food restaurant where he can also gain a lot more than just experience-for example, tips, food discounts and a good social atmosphere.

Once the teenager brings home a paycheck, it can help him understand what it means to earn money of his own. He can save it or spend it. In addition, by working and accepting responsibility, he gains a lot of experience and skills he will need when he is older.

One thing is clear, for children to really make the most of their vacation they must work hard to build a firm structure for their time!

Travels with Tom

A Vacation with a Difference

1 .Last week I received a letter from one of my readers. She had just returned from a 10-day

vacation touring London’s theaters and was eager to share her experiences. “We saw five

plays, met with the actors, and heard wonderful lectures,” she wrote. “People who spend

their holidays just lying on the beach don’t know what they’re missing”.

5.I’ve gotten a great number of letters like this recently. A growing number of vacationers, it

seems, are no longer interested in peace and quiet. Instead, they are looking for easy ways to

expand their horizons. According to the Global Tourism Association (GTA), every year

more people go on educational vacations. These vacations are offered by museums,

universities and wildlife organizations.

10. Not surprisingly, the best place to find the right educational vacation for you is on the

Internet. If you’re interested in a cultural experience, you can try one of the dozens of

websites that specialize in art or music tours. If you prefer adventure, you can find plenty of

nature and science tours on the Internet. You might decide on a week-long tour of the

volcanoes in Hawaii, for example, or a safari where you can watch African mountain gorillas

in their natural 15. surroundings. Finally, if you also want some relaxation on your

educational vacations, have a look at the deal offered by hotels. At Crater Hotel in Phoenix,

Arizona for instance, guests can take courses in desert photography in the morning and swim

in the hotel pool in the afternoon.

Whatever you choose, the key to a successful educational vacation is an experienced tour

guide. 20. Most companies state that they only employ experts, such as well-known

historians, art critics or zoologists. Still, it is a good idea to find out as much as you can

about the guide before making your decision.

Educational vacations also have an added bonus that is worth considering: You get to meet a

lot 25. of people who share your interests. So why not try an educational vacation for a

change --- and then write me a letter and tell me all about it.

KANGAROO SAVES MAN'S LIFE

September 22, 2003

A kangaroo saved the life of an Australian farmer. Len Richards was checking his farm after a big storm. Suddenly, a tree branch fell on his head. He lay on the ground, alone and *unconscious. Lulu the kangaroo

found him just in time.

Lulu saw something was wrong so she hopped to the farmhouse and

banged on the door. She then returned to Len Richards and barked like

a dog until help came. Richards' wife heard Lulu barking and went to

see what the matter was. She saw her husband lying on the ground and

immediately called an ambulance. Richards' daughter, Celeste, said,

"Lulu was trying to get our attention because she never acts like that.

My dad is alive because of her. Lulu is my hero."

Lulu is a wild kangaroo; she is not a pet. She comes and goes freely

THE WILLIAMS SISTERSToday on Centre Court at the 2003 Wimbledon Tennis Championships, the atmosphere was tense. Two women were competing for one of the greatest *awards in tennis. When Serena hit the ball for the last time, Venus was unable to stop it. When the game was over, Serena happily ran to hug Venus. Venus then smilingly took photographs as Serena received her award. Competitors or what?

These two African-American women are Venus and Serena Williams, two sisters who are the most famous tennis players in the world. The two sisters together have won tennis tournaments all over the world, in addition to over 8 million dollars in prize money.

The Williams sisters are different from most professional tennis players, as they came from a very poor and violent neighborhood. Despite the conditions that surrounded them, the girls began playing tennis at the ages of four and five. They practiced with their father Richard every day at the only tennis court in the area.

It was soon clear to Richard that the girls were very talented. At first they took part in amateur competitions but later, at the age of fourteen, they became professional players. Richard, now their manager as well, was worried about his daughters' early fame. He demanded that the girls get excellent marks at school so that they would have other options when they retire from professional tennis.

Today, Venus and Serena are superstars. They often compete against each other. Their father is their coach and manager.
